Fil-Am history month kick-off in Carson honors Olympic gymnast oLYMPIC gymnast and UCLA Bruins artistic gymnast Kyla Briana Ross was bestowed a youth achievement award at the Carson Community Center during the kick off of the Filipino American history month festivities (October 5). Kyla’s mother, Kiana Ross is of Filipino and Germandescent. Her father, Jason Ross is of African American and Japanese ancestry. He was a minor league outfielder.
In her speech, Ross said that whenever she competes, especially in the Olympics, it is not just herself whom she thinks of but she also represents her heritage. Kyla is the top ranked gymnast in the PAC-12 and nationally on vault, bars and all–around gymnastics. She was a member of the 2012 U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team that was dubbed the Fierce Five. Pinay art photog on for a solo exhibit in New York By ROMEO MORALES
A 29-YEAR-oLD Filipina is set for a six-day fine-art photography exhibit (October 18 to 24) at the famous Paul Rudolf Heritage Foundation building in New York City. An opening reception for Paola Nazario’s solo exhibit will start at 6 p.m. on October 18 at 246 E 58th Street, New York City. On her first photo showcase, Paola’s works will depict the interplay of different emotions as she journeyed through life and up to the point when she found photography and decided to take photography as part of her life.
