MANILA – The Philippines’ strong external payments position and continued improvement of macroeconomic f undamentals are the main reasons why the peso remains generally firm against the greenback, a ranking Department of Finance (DOF) official said.

Metro Manila under ‘community quarantine’ MANILA (PNA) – President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday night raised the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) alert system to Code Red sublevel 2 as the number of infected persons in the Philippines climbed to 64 — and continues to rise. “The Code Alert System for the Covid-19 public health event is hereby raised to Code Red sublevel-2,” Duterte said, reading from the resolution adopted by the Inter-Agency Task Force on the Emerging Infectious Diseases at Malacañang Palace. He said he would convert the resolution into an executive order to ensure that it will be strictly followed. METRO

In an economic bulletin Friday, Finance Undersecretary Gil Beltran said amid the volatilities in the global economy due in part to concerns on the coronavirus disease 2019 (Cov id-19) and traderelated issues, the local cur renc y ma naged to appreciate by 0.28 percent against the US dollar to date. MANILA — The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday confirmed 12 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in the Philippines, bringing the total number to 64.
Of the 12 additional cases, three are confined at the Medical City and two at St. Luke's Medical Center-Global City. On the other hand, two are admitted at Ortigas Hospital and Health Care Center and one each at Makati Medical Center, Cardinal Santos Medical Center, University
of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, Marikina Valley Medical Center, and Bataan St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center. Four of the patients are Filipinos, while the remaining eight's nationalities are still being validated. COVID-19
