Among the many treasures of cultural history at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum is the world’s largest and perhaps best collection of crèches. Most are multi part Christmas scenes that were created in the Alpine region and Italy between 1700 and 1850. The museum owes this exceptional exhibition to Max Schmederer (1854 1917), who spent his life passionately gathering crèche scenes from Bavaria, Tyrol and even Naples. Each year, the philanthropist used to open his private premises to present his latest acquisitions to Munich residents. Before his death, he bequeathed his most valuable pieces to the museum, and dictated the assembly of the figures, which remains unchanged to this day. A tour of the Krippensammlung (crèche collection) is a quaint introduction to the imagery of medieval religion and pious baroque staging. The section is only open f rom December through February, so take advantage of the opportunity to visit it while you can. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Thursdays, the museum is open until 8 p.m. http://www.bayerisches-nationalmuseum.de/index.php?id=287&L=1
Sunday, 11 December, 3 p.m.
In the world's largest collection of nativity scenes, we accompany Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and the 3 Kings on their way to the manger and hear exciting stories about the birth of Jesus. Many animals are also present - not only ox and donkey. There are nativity scenes from Munich and the Alpine region, but also particularly impressive ones from Italy. Hands-on materials let us experience the Christmas story with all our senses. In the spirit of its Bohemian residents, the Schwabinger Weihnachtsmarkt was established some 30 years ago as a means of celebrating the district’s lively arts and crafts scene. This year, the motto of the market is “Handmade: Precious Instead of Expensive.” Around 100 artists will sell their works in individual stalls. This project will be complemented by a large exhibition in the Kunstzelt (art tent) and a park of sculptures. Concerts, kids’ activities and international food will further entertain visitors from November 25 through December 24, weekdays from 12 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and weekends from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. On December 24, the market will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For a full listing of all events, visit http://www.schwabingerweihnachtsmarkt.de/en/
As early as 1410, Munich hosted a so-called Nikolausdult in honor of St. Nikolaus: the roots of the Christmas market tradition. Tying in with such early entertainment, a medieval market will be held on Wittelsbacherplatz. Through December 23, a replica of a village from the Middle Ages will welcome visitors from the modern age. The market will be open from 25 November on daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. On weekends, jugglers and musicians will prove that the Dark Ages weren’t necessarily dull. For a schedule of performances, visit www.mittelaltermarkt-muenchen.de
Sun, December 11, 3–5 p.m., Munich, Christmas Market, Krampus Run, approx. 25 groups
The traditional "Krampus Run" recalls the Christian legend of bishop Saint Nicholas and his dark-faced companion, "Krampus".
Today, many young people enjoy bringing the 500-year custom back to life. "Sparifankerl Pass", Munich's first "Krampusgruppe", does a breathtaking race through the market, dressed in archaic costumes.
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup candied red cherries, halved
1/4 cup currants
1/4 cup candied citron, diced
1/4 cup rum
4 1/2 cup flour
2 yeast, active dry packages
1 cup milk
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 tbsp. orange peel, finely shredded
2 tsp. lemon peel, finely shredded
1/2 cup almonds, blanched chopped
In a medium bowl combine raisins, cherries, currants, citron or citrus peel, and rum. Set aside. In a large mixer bowl combine 1 1/2 cups of the flour and yeast. Heat milk, butter, sugar and salt over low heat, stirring constantly until warm (120F to 130F).
Add to dry ingredients along with eggs and fruit peels. Beat at low speed of electric mixer for 1/2 minute, scraping sides of bowl. Beat 3 minutes at high speed. Stir in fruit rum mixture, almonds and enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough.
Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead in enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately soft dough that is smooth and elastic (5 to 6 minutes). Shape into a ball. Place in a greased bowl, turning once. Cover. Let rise until double (1 hour). Punch dough down. Divide in half. Cover and let rest 10 minutes.
On a lightly floured surface roll each half to a 10x8 inch oval. Fold lengthwise in half so the top half overlaps to within 1/2 inch of the bottom half. Press folded edge firmly. Place about 4 inches apart on greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise until double (45 minutes). Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool. Serve sprinkled with powdered sugar or spread with confectioners' glaze and decorate with candied cherries. Makes 2 loaves.
Mix 1 cup sifted powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon milk. Add more milk, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, until spreading consistency.

Märchengasse and Riesengasse are popular alleys in the old town of Innsbruck and definitely worth a visit. For years, people of all ages have undertaken a fascinating voyage of discovery through the enchanted alleyways of the Old Town. Walking through this “fairy tale forest”, you will encounter 28 life-size figures from fairy tales, giants and legends peering down from the historic façades. They enthrall everyone who spies them.

Those who long for a quieter celebration of Christmas, without the hustle and bustle of shopping malls, tinsel, and hectic schedules, are strongly recommended to enjoy the festive season in the medieval town of Rattenberg, Austria’s smallest town. Standing on the banks of the Inn River, Rattenberg is tucked between the 10th century fortress on the hill and the river. The medieval center of Austria’s smallest town is full of revitalized townhouses, cobbled streets, and alleyways. There will be no Christmas lighting in Rattenberg, instead, the lovely, historic pedestrian precinct will exclusively be lit by candles, torches, and open fires on the four weekends during Advent Season. Revolving around the theme of “Wonder and Mysteries”, Rattenberg boasts a contemplative and spirit filled atmosphere where the true sense of Christmas is cherished and lived.

Hand warming jugs of hot punch, faces aglow in the warm light, the aroma of Tyrolean delicacies wafting through the air and wide-eyed children, radiant, excited, eavesdropping on Christmas tales − this year, as always in the run-up to Christmas, the Hall Advent Market is the Yuletide meeting place for young and old alike.
Pass a few hours with family, friends and acquaintances and indulge yourselves in the culinary treasures on offer. The food stalls will be preparing and serving traditional and unique fare such as hot, spiced wine (glühwein) and punch, doughnuts (krapfen), filled open fritters (kiachl), roasted chestnuts (maroni), roasted garlic bread (bruschette) and other tasty Tyrolean delicacies. The majority of the 25 or so stalls are manned by local vendors from Hall and the surrounding area, but as well as Tyrol, there are also representatives from South Tyrol and Bavaria.
Brass bands and choirs, and for children an interactive zoo and Christmas coach rides, all combining to create a wonderland atmosphere at the Hall Advent Market. The whole island is lit up with elaborate Christmas decorations and lights, creating a really special and traditional atmosphere. Sweet smelling aromas fill the air as over 80 stalls sell culinary delicacies, wonderful arts & crafts, woodcarvings, mulled wine and many other great gift ideas.
