It is a time of waiting for the arrival of Christmas, the coming of Jesus to earth when he was born as a baby at Bethlehem about two thousand years ago.
Advent is the new year of the Christian Church and the church season that leads to Christmas Day.
Advent begins on the Sunday nearest to 30th November (St. Andrew's Day) and lasts until midnight on Christmas Eve. Advent Sunday is the first of the four Sundays before the 25th December.
November 27 First Sunday of Advent 2022
December 4 Second Sunday of Advent 2022
December 11 Third Sunday of Advent 2022
December 18 Fourth Sunday of Advent 2022
During the season of Advent, Christians across the world prepare for the celebration of the arrival of the Lord into the world through the birth of his Son Jesus Christ. Advent is a time to celebrate light in the midst of darkness. It is also a time to look forward to when Jesus will come a second time.
The beginning of Advent is when the preparations for Christmas really begin the festive menu is planned, gifts are chosen and wrapped, carols sung, cards are written and posted and houses decorated.
The Advent Wreath is the widely recognized symbol of Advent. The wreath is made of a circle of evergreen branches laid flat to symbolize eternal life. Four candles (traditionally red) stand in the circle and each one represent one of the four Sundays of Advent.
During Advent, some people make or buy Advent calendars as a way of counting the days to Christmas. Usually these calendars have twenty four 'windows'. The calendars do not necessarily start from the beginning of Advent.
Advent Calendars always start on 1 December.
Traditional calendar windows open up to show a picture of something linked with this time of year. One may show an angel or one of the shepherds who visited baby Jesus. Others may show pictures of Christmas presents, a candle or anything else to do with Christmas. The last window to be opened usually shows Jesus himself, lying in a manger.
Popular advent calendars today usually have chocolate hidden behind each window.
Advent is a term from the Latin word 'adventus' which means "arrival".
November 24 until December 31, Munich, Theresienwiese, Tollwood Festival

Märchengasse and Riesengasse are popular alleys in the old town of Innsbruck and definitely worth a visit. For years, people of all ages have undertaken a fascinating voyage of discovery through the enchanted alleyways of the Old Town. Walking through this “fairy tale forest”, you will encounter 28 life-size figures from fairy tales, giants and legends peering down from the historic façades. They enthrall everyone who spies them.

Those who long for a quieter celebration of Christmas, without the hustle and bustle of shopping malls, tinsel, and hectic schedules, are strongly recommended to enjoy the festive season in the medieval town of Rattenberg, Austria’s smallest town. Standing on the banks of the Inn River, Rattenberg is tucked between the 10th century fortress on the hill and the river. The medieval center of Austria’s smallest town is full of revitalized townhouses, cobbled streets, and alleyways. There will be no Christmas lighting in Rattenberg, instead, the lovely, historic pedestrian precinct will exclusively be lit by candles, torches, and open fires on the four weekends during Advent Season. Revolving around the theme of “Wonder and Mysteries”, Rattenberg boasts a contemplative and spirit filled atmosphere where the true sense of Christmas is cherished and lived.

The food stalls will be preparing and serving traditional and unique fare such as hot, spiced wine (glühwein) and punch, doughnuts (krapfen), filled open fritters (kiachl), roasted chestnuts (maroni), roasted garlic bread (bruschette) and other tasty Tyrolean delicacies. The majority of the 25 or so stalls are manned by local vendors from Hall and the surrounding area, but as well as Tyrol, there are also representatives from South Tyrol and Bavaria.
Brass bands and choirs, and for children an interactive zoo and Christmas coach rides, all combining to create a wonderland atmosphere at the Hall Advent Market.
