Fun Facts about Newsies, Coming to Belk Theater Next Season

D

irect from Broadway, Newsies, the smash-hit, crowd-pleasing new musical from Disney, is headed to Charlotte. It is part of the fabulous 2014-2015 PNC Broadway Lights lineup. Filled with one heart-pounding number after another, it’s a high-energy explosion of song and dance that you won’t want to miss.

The winner of the 2012 Tony Awards for best score and best choreography, Newsies has audiences and critics alike calling it “a musical worth singing about!” (The New York Times).

Below, check out some fun facts behind the Broadway production of Newsies. You’re sure to fall in love with the show when it hits the road too!

Newsies – Fun Facts Newsies has been seen by more than 500,000 people, breaking the Nederlander Theatre’s box office record seven times.

which eventually turned into the film musical released in 1992.

• Though intended only as a pilot production before the title was licensed for regional, professional and amateur productions, Newsies’ Paper Mill Playhouse run engendered extraordinary interest from the media and public alike, sparking the transfer to Broadway.

The History • Newsies is inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899, which began when newspaper publishers raised the price for newsies, charging a dime more per hundred papers.

• The strike was led by a charismatic young newsboy, Kid Blink, who rallied orphan and runaway newsies on a two-weeklong action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.

• Pulitzer did finally concede and agree to the exact deal that Harvey Fierstein’s book dramatizes. As a result, not only were the boys considerably better off, it was in many ways the beginning of the child labor movement.

Awards • Newsies was nominated for 23 major theatrical awards, and won: - 2012 Tony Award Best Choreography – Christopher Gattelli.

Charlotte Live! Offers Exciting Opportunities for Young People Interested in the Arts

harlotte Live! is a social club made up of young people who enjoy making new friends and attending great live shows at Blumenthal Performing Arts. Charlotte Live! members enjoy special ticket discounts as well as free pre-show workshops and parties before select performances.

Holly Mason, a teacher in Gaston County, has been bringing her students to Charlotte Live! for the past few seasons. She said it’s an amazing experience each and every time.

“Many of (my students) had never been to live theater before, so this opportunity is such a blessing.”

Winston Sims, theater arts teacher at Marvin Ridge High School, said he feels lucky to have such a program for his students and encourages others to

join in on all the fun. “It is a fantastic way to learn something new from a theater professional ... (and) see a touring Broadway show without paying a large amount of money. And it is a wonderful way to expose students, and immerse yourself, in the theater community.”

Charlotte Live! is for middle and high school students. Separate events are scheduled for each age group. Teachers and parents of middle and high school students can also sign up to be on the email list.

Newsies' Fansies • Newsies has a large group of dedicated fans, called Fansies, whose enthusiasm helped push the show to Broadway.

• When the Broadway engagement of Newsies was announced, chatter on Twitter reached 14 million people.

• The official Newsies Facebook page reached 100,000 fans before the show opened on Broadway.

Newspapers • There are approximately 150 newspapers used in every performance, specifically printed with the headline “Trolley Strike Enters Third Week.” These papers are carefully cared for, to avoid tearing, so they can be used for multiple performances.

• The 11 newspaper bundles at the newsstand and in the fight scene are foam-filled with a paper outer layer, to avoid injury and reduce the amount of paper used in the show.

• The 18 “Newsie Banner” bundles are composed of 300 pages of legal paper glued together and covered with contact paper to avoid tearing as they are tossed around the stage.

Choreography • Christopher Gattelli’s Tony Award winning choreography steals the show each night with 31 backflips and countless spins, leaps and tap steps.

North Carolina Dance Theatre is Now Charlotte Ballet

I

n April, North Carolina Dance Theatre, one of Blumenthal Performing Arts’ resident companies, announced it was changing its name to Charlotte Ballet. The name change is part of a branding initiative to define and clearly communicate the organization and its mission.

“The transformational shift enables us to redefine the perceptions of ballet; celebrate our dancers; and better connect the company to the community we serve,” said Executive Director Douglas Singleton.

Founded in 1970 by Robert Lindgren, former dean of dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, the company toured both internationally and nationally and received the National Endowment for the Arts distinction as the nation’s highest rated touring company in 1982.

Salvatore Aiello became artistic director in 1985, and under his leadership the organization moved to Charlotte in 1990. Former New York City Ballet star Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux took over artistic leadership in 1996. Building on the foundation of excellence established by his predecessors, Bonnefoux developed a versatile and diverse repertoire ranging from full-length classical ballets to contemporary world premieres by choreographers such as Dwight Rhoden, resident choreographer since 2006. Bonnefoux’s wife, fellow former New York City Ballet star, Patricia McBride, serves as associate artistic director, as does former dancer Sasha Janes. In 2010, the organization

moved to its home at the Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance in uptown Charlotte.

Dancer Pete Leo Walker said, “Our new name reflects our commitment to being a part of the thriving and vibrant arts community of Charlotte. We are proud to be a part of this region’s development and to celebrate the city that has been celebrating us for years.”

Charlotte Ballet continues to offer a variety of exciting performances and programs to engage and educate our community. Charlotte Ballet Academy, previously named the North Carolina Dance Theatre School of Dance, enrolls over 700 students annually, providing exceptional training for aspiring dancers, as well as a prestigious pre-professional program and Summer Intensive. Through the Reach program, Charlotte Ballet offers free dance classes to children throughout the community.

“This transformation is not about changing what we do – it’s about defining it,” said President and Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. “Our dancers are known for their ability to perform classical ballets as well as innovative, contemporary works. No matter how far we push the perceptions of ballet and infuse other dance styles, our performances have always been and will continue to be, rooted in the tradition of ballet. We are proud to finally take our rightful place as Charlotte Ballet.”

In addition to stage managing, she has worked in theaters as an electrician, costume stitcher and scenic artist, in the box office, and on many running crews. Sabrina also enjoys knitting, gardening and cooking. As a Charlotte resident for over 35 years, she appreciates the rich source material that life here provides for the Squawks team to use! She would like to thank her family and friends – especially her daughter, Lulu – for their support over the years and for being understanding about how weird theater people's schedules can be. Thanks also go out to the cast and production team for making it fun to revisit Charlotte Squawks year after year.

Linda Booth (Choreographer) hails from Washington, D.C., and received her BFA in dance performance, as well as her teaching certificate in dance education from UNC-Greensboro. This is Linda’s fourth year with Squawks. She also is the choreographer for The Blumey Awards, sponsored by Blumenthal Performing Arts and presented by Wells Fargo, as well as the choreographer and co-director of Team Broadway, an incredibly talented ensemble of youths sponsored by Teen City Stage and Blumenthal. She has maintained a rich and rewarding career in Charlotte as a performer, director and choreographer.

Regional performance credits include A Chorus Line, West side Story, Kiss Me Kate, Gypsy, Blood Brothers and The Taffetas. Linda is passionate about musical theater, and has choreographed more than 200 productions in regional and educational theater. Recent credits include Urinetown and Spamalot.

Jeana Neal Borman (Music and Vocal Direction) performs extensively in the Charlotte area. She serves as staff accompanist for Lenoir-Rhyne University

in Hickory, lately accompanying there a production of Ragtime. Jeana also accompanies ballet classes at Charlotte Ballet, and in her spare time (not) she does year after year of Charlotte Squawks, all the while wondering what's up with that.

She has spent a lot of quality time behind keys, touring and performing as music director/accompanist for the education division of Opera Carolina for 10 seasons, and appearing with Queen City Virtuosi, Theatre Charlotte, Davidson Community Players, Lake Wylie Community Theatre, North Mecklenburg Community Chorus, Carolina Voices, Central Piedmont Community College, the Broadway Lights series and various high school theater productions. Outside of the Charlotte area, Jeana collaborated at Peoria Civic Opera (Illinois); National Music Camp in Interlochen, Mich.; the Israel Vocal Arts Institute in TelAviv; and the Glassboro, N.J., Summer Theatre. None of these experiences prepared her for Squawking, but then again, what would? She is honored to have been nominated Best Music Director for Charlotte Squawks, Six Degrees of Desecration. Jeana and her husband, Stormy, are the proud parents of Celeste, who is an upcoming high schooler, driver's license holder and Clara in the Nutcracker.

Mike Collins (Producer, Director and Performer) is host of Charlotte Talks on WFAE, 90.7FM, weekdays at 9 a.m. and a principal at Collins, Haynes & Lully Advertising. He has performed on stage with Charlotte Rep, Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte, Theatre Charlotte, CPCC Summer Theater and the Belmont Abbey Players and has directed other shows – real shows – respectable productions – actual pieces of theater – but alas, much of that has fallen by the wayside as his life has become consumed by working with this collection of like-minded professionals who feel compelled to take Charlotte to task. It is a process not unlike herding cats, but it has made him ridiculously rich. No, wait – that sentence should have read, “it has made him ridiculous.”

Who’s Who Kevin Harris (Performer). This marks Kevin's seventh appearance in Squawks.

He has been performing in and around the area for over 30 years. Theater performances includes Big River, Show Boat, Dreamgirls, Rocky Horror Show, The Wiz, Forum, Master Harold ... and the Boys, Ain't Misbehavin', Little Shop of Horrors and others, including cabarets and musical revues. Choral experiences include Opera Carolina, Ethos Chorus, Charlotte Contemporary Ensemble, CPCC and Charlotte Choral Society (Carolina Voices). Kevin is a member of The Metropolitan Music Ministry. He is a certified massage therapist and Reiki Master. Hobbies include reading, weightlifting, crosswords and ... singing! Kevin is thankful for all of the support through the years from family and friends, including his wife, Carmen Harris; kids, KJ, Elyse and Rachael; and grands, Gabrielle and Jasmine. He is dedicating this performance to the late Carmen Serrano, his mother-in-law and mentor. What a wild, wonderful ride for someone who took just two weeks of drama class!

Meghan Helms (Assistant Stage Manager) is enjoying her third year with Squawks! She has worked backstage in some form or another for a few local theater companies over the past eight years. She has recently stage managed Arsenic & Old Lace as well as just do it (a themed reading and performance series), both at Theatre Charlotte. Thanks to the cast, crew and Blumenthal for this opportunity, and an even bigger thank you to Jordan and Emma for being super encouraging.

Robbie Jaeger (Costume Design and Performer) is a graduate of The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC. A prolific, award-winning theater artist, Robbie has been seen on almost every stage in town. In addition to performing, Robbie has worked extensively in the theater as a director, choreographer and costume designer. Robbie’s work has been recognized by the North

Carolina Theatre Conference and Creative Loafing with multiple choreography, costume design and performance awards. This is Robbie’s eighth year as a performer with Charlotte Squawks and his fourth year pulling double duty as the show’s costume designer. In addition to freelancing throughout Charlotte, Robbie also serves as the artistic director of Asheville Creative Arts in western North Carolina, where this July he will direct and choreograph Charlotte's Web – the Musical.

Johanna Jowett (Performer) had a passion for performing from birth and is ecstatic to be returning to Charlotte Squawks. Johanna’s love of performing has led her to a wonderful career as a bartender at Jackalope Jacks. She knows how to make all of the drinks, and they generally taste very good. Recent films include A Long Way Off, Captive, My Name Is Paul, and the television series “7th Street Theatre.” You may recognize Johanna from CPI Security and N.C. Education Lottery commercials, or as the voice/video welcoming you at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport along with fellow cast member Bobby Tyson. Feel free to watch other projects she's been a part of on YouTube. Johanna would like to thank her co-workers, friends, and family for their encouragement and support. She would especially like to express her gratitude for her fellow cast and crew members who also remind her how brightly her light can shine, and feed that flame.

Brian Kahn (Producer, Book, Lyrics and PowerPoint Design). When he’s not writing musical parodies, Brian is a litigation partner at the law firm of McGuireWoods, LLP, specializing in complex business disputes and financial services litigation. Prior written works include the last nine Squawks and countless legal briefs filed in courts throughout the nation. Brian is not in the show this year because he has 7-year-old triplet boys and a 3-year-old (who thinks he’s 7), and

Who’s Who he likes to see them on occasion. Brian would like to thank his wife, Raizel, for allowing him to write this year’s show and promises to stop telling the kids terrifying stories about the Tooth Fairy.

Susan Roberts Knowlson (Performer) is thrilled to be squawking again this year! She has been seen across the country in national tours, regional theater, opera, TV and off-Broadway. She has received multiple awards from Charlotte Magazine, Creative Loafing and The Metrolina Theatre Association for her acting. Charlotte audiences may also recognize Susan from performances at Actor’s Theatre, Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, CPCC, Opera Carolina, Theatre Charlotte and The Charlotte Symphony. Favorite roles include Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Maria in The Sound of Music, Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, Marian in The Music Man, Annie in Annie Get Your Gun, and many more.

Megan Midkiff (Performer) is excited to be a Charlottean, having relocated here three years ago from NYC. Megan performed as a professional musical theater actress for almost 10 years and was honored with the first Roger Sturtevant Award from the Actors Equity Association. An Alabama native, she has joyfully returned to the South and is happy to be squawking again! She was seen in Theatre Charlotte’s production of ... Spelling Bee and last year’s Squawks. Alan Morgan (Performer). My 10th season. Hoorah! Mike and Brian, your brilliance is a gift to this great city. Thank you for bringing me back each year to join an incredible cast, crew and production team for such raucous (and sometimes raunchy) fun. It’s a privilege and a pleasure. A native Charlottean, Morgan is president of CORE Project Solutions, a management consulting firm with a particular focus on serving the construction and real estate industries. An extensive background in the professional arts earned Morgan his Equity card while performing in cabaret, dance, theater and music productions in NYC and Charleston, S.C. He takes great civic pride in promoting philanthropy and social entrepreneurship.

Patrick Ratchford (Performer) is excited to return to the Squawks family for Charlotte Squawks 10! He has worked extensively throughout the region in a variety of roles and has been recognized with multiple acting awards from Metrolina Theatre Association, Creative Loafing and Charlotte Magazine. Area audiences may recognize him from performances at Central Piedmont Summer Theatre, Actors Theatre, Charlotte Rep, Opera Carolina, Theatre Charlotte and Blowing Rock Stage Co., to name a few. Favorite roles include musical theater classics such as Harold Hill in The Music Man and Frank Butler in Annie Get Your Gun, as well as more current works including Man 2 in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change; Sheriff/Pan in Bat Boy; and Feldzeig in The Drowsy Chaperone. Carmen Schultz (Performer) is delighted (well, mostly delighted) to return to the Booth Playhouse stage for her sixth consecutive performance of Blumenthal Performing Arts’ production of Charlotte Squawks! For seven years, Carmen was a performer for Carolina Voices on The Singing Christmas Tree and Spring Broadway Revue. At her “day job,” Carmen blooms as the director of development for Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. Bobby Tyson (Performer) is actually proud to admit and scream from the mountaintop that he is an original Squawker. He has been a part of this fiasco from Squawks No. 1, and as we celebrate this 10th edition of Squawks, it drives home the point that therapy, injections and prescription meds sometimes don't work. If you’re a Squawker you’re just a Squawker. Bobby started to list his many film, commercial, TV and theater credits, but decided that if you don't know him by now, there is no need to bore you again. Admit it ... you’re a Squawker.

of her time teaching group exercise at the Harris YMCA, leading worship music at Myers Park Methodist Church and tutoring middle and high school students in math. She has a degree in mathematics and French from Wake Forest University, where she was a cheerleader and member of the dance team – many years ago! LouAnn wants to thank Scott, her amazing husband of 27 years, and her three grown (and almost grown) daughters for their support of these quirky musical endeavors. Padgett, Rachael and Sydney, I could not be any prouder of the incredible young women you have become! Soon, we will welcome our first son-in-law to the family.

Carson, climb on board! LouAnn loves the opportunity to lampoon this great city that often takes itself way too seriously. Thankfully, folks keep doing stuff that's sufficiently stupid that it gives the Squawks lyricist ample spoofing material year after year. DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY MIKE COLLINS … And we’re back. For the 10th time!

And this time, we’re determined to get it right. But as you will quickly discover, this show’s so wrong. Again, we just can’t leave well-enough alone. We just have to stir the pot. No sleeping dogs lying around here. Nope. We’re opening old wounds as fast as we can. Is there a doctor in the house? Charlotte’s gonna need one when this night is through.

But this really isn’t our fault – it’s yours.

What started years ago as a one-time fundraiser has taken on a life of its own.

True, we keep coming back, but so do you. We lampoon, skewer and expose everything in sight, and the more we do, the more of you show up to witness our sorry antics. We’ve struck a chord and it isn’t pretty. All of us are in need of deep therapy.

You see, we only do this show once a year, so we have 11 months of pent-up anger and frustration to get off our chests.

Remember, all of the people up on this stage have lived what you’ve lived; they – like you – are all victims. You know the feeling. You’ve gotten angry about a lot of things. We’re just a little touchier – or a little more touched. You’re angry. We’re mad, and by that I mean a little crazy. We just can’t keep it in, and the result will unfold before you tonight.

Back when Charlotte Squawks began, the Queen City was the kind of place that took itself very seriously. We could laugh

Collins at Gastonia but not at ourselves. Then Squawks came along and held up a broken mirror, forcing us to see ourselves as we really were (are). We’re still laughing at Gastonia but have discovered this city is a gold mine of foibles, for which laughter is the only suitable reaction if you’re opposed to full-scale rioting in the streets. When it comes to coal ash, politics, the Bobcats, oh, and our former pay-to-play mayor – laughter is the best medicine. Mary Poppins was right when she said “a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down.” But this ain’t no Mary Poppins, so buckle up ’cause we’re Squawking.

WRITER’S NOTES BY BRIAN KAHN In spring 2003, a rag-tag bunch of misfits were assembled with one mission: to put on a musical-parody show roasting Charlotte in a one-night benefit for WTVI, Charlotte’s PBS affiliate. They were a bunch of outsiders thrown together at short notice on a shoestring budget. They were a last resort and were never expected to actually succeed.

And they didn’t. They raised less money than it cost to put on the show. They pissed off all of their sponsors. They threw WTVI into a financial tailspin, from which it still hasn’t recovered. The topics of the songs ranged from the rivalry between Wachovia and Bank of America, to a long-shot presidential candidate named John Edwards, to a brand new culinary school in town.

Kahn Eleven years and nine shows later, here we are – still embarrassing Charlotte and ourselves. Mike, Alan Morgan, Bobby Tyson and I are the only ones left from that first show. (I am no longer allowed on stage – something about too many old, bald and fat guys in the cast already.) We were planning on bringing more back from the first few shows, but Duke and ex-Mayor Cannon seemed to have other ideas. Maybe next year when things calm down around here … yeah, right.

It was a different era. They also covered gerrymandered congressional districts, a battle being waged over a proposed trolley line, and a rough year for Duke Energy. Okay, maybe it wasn’t so different.

The smart folks who valued their reputation got out and never spoke of the show again. But some of us are depraved, lack judgment, and crave attention. We wouldn’t let go. And we found others like us … the current cast, band and crew ... the folks at the Blumenthal … you.

Is This Show Right for Me?

ou may sometimes notice content descriptions, such as “Explicit Language” or “Mature Content,” with some of the shows Blumenthal Performing Arts brings to its stages. The goal of these warnings is to get the attention of ticket buyers and prompt them to make a thoughtful choice as to whether a show is right for them and their guests.

Charlotte has become a very diverse community, and what may be shocking to some doesn’t raise an eyebrow with others.

Unlike the movie industry, the theater business doesn’t have a uniform ratings code that decides ratings for each show as it travels across the country. Only the ticket buyer can decide what is right for him or her.

Parental standards also vary widely, which is why Blumenthal Performing Arts

doesn’t suggest appropriate ages. Parents are in the best position to know whether the content, length of show and subject matter is appropriate for their children.

Anyone who is wondering if a show is right for him or her is encouraged to do a little research.

The Blumenthal website, BlumenthalArts.org, is a good place to start to learn more. Frequently there are video excerpts as well as links to the shows’ official websites.

On the Internet, consumers can search for reviews from other cities and find additional videos and other resources that may help.

Blumenthal’s customer service team is happy to answer questions as well.

If you are not familiar with a show and you see a warning, take a moment to research the show a bit if you have any question as to whether it is right for you.

by Chip Davis Nov. 11 – Belk Theater Mannheim Steamroller Christmas by Chip Davis has been America’s favorite holiday tradition, and this year marks the 30th anniversary of the group’s annual tour. Grammy Award winner Chip Davis has created a show that features the beloved Christmas music of Mannheim Steamroller along with dazzling multimedia effects performed in an intimate setting. The spirit of the season comes alive with the signature sound of Mannheim Steamroller. Join in the 30th anniversary celebration of the ultimate holiday tradition from the No. 1 Christmas music artist in history.

Celtic Thunder: Christmas Voices Symphony Tour Nov. 11 – Belk Theater Celtic Thunder: Christmas Voices Symphony Tour is the first ever symphony tour for Celtic Thunder, which will depart from its traditional and critically-acclaimed large set productions. The group will perform songs from its 2013 chart-topping album "Christmas Voices" in a dynamic live music experience accentuated by the instrumentals of a symphony orchestra. The show will feature holiday favorites ranging from traditional carols "Away in a Manger" and "O Holy Night" to the more contemporary "Mary’s Boy Child" and "Fairytale of New York." Celtic Thunder’s four male soloists, Keith Harkin, Ryan Kelly, Neil Byrne and Colm Keegan, will also perform solo and ensemble numbers, signature Celtic Thunder hit songs "Ireland’s Call" and "Turning Away" and traditional Irish numbers such as "Dulaman" and "My Land."
