V ZH FORVH RXW DQG UHĂ HFW RQ DOO of the people we met and the stories we shared throughout the year, I am humbled to have been blessed with another year at the helm of Bluffs & Bayous‌Life Along and Beyond the Mississippi. We have some loyal folks on our staff who each month, for your reading pleasure, weathered deadOLQHV DQG ODWH QLJKW SURRĂ€QJ DORQJ ZLWK ZHHNV of hustling to address every detail. Thank you, Jean, Jan, Anita, Donna, Mike, Gary, Tim, Jennifer, Sam, and Alma (and spouses) for your professional and creative collaboration that infuse our publication with the spirited promotion of the positive and the potential of our unique but closely tied Southern communities. Your team effort and enthusiastic attitude provide the stimulus for our successful monthly publications. January for many of us marks new beginnings—new ventures; and for Bluffs & Bayous, these new ventures fashion the motif of our January Wedding Issue as it highlights the previous year’s prominent engagements and weddings in our area. Such joyous occasions, as families and friends celebrate their new beginnings, create an exciting venue of stories and images for our readers. For many years, my long-time friend and co-editor Jean Biglane partnered with me in a venture that opened many doors to happy times‌.we operated a wedding-and-eventsplanning business, Apropos. s I sit to write this, espresso in hand, responding to messages and emails for upcoming weddings, I cannot help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the honor of being involved in such intimate, special days. Over these last several years, I have fallen in love over and over again with these families that I’ve had the privilege of working with; and I would love to share with you a few inspirations I have gained. Honoring Legacies One of my favorite additions to a wedding reception is a memory table. For those whom we hold so dear and who are no longer physically with us on that special day, a memory table is a perfect way to honor their presence in our lives. Gather your favorite photographs of those loved ones or maybe pictures from their wedding day, and disSOD\ WKHP DW WKH UHFHSWLRQ &DQGOHV DQG D EHDXWLIXO à RUDO DUUDQJHPHQW are a great addition to this special display. 5HFHQWO\ RQH RI P\ FRXSOHV KDG WKH PRVW EHDXWLIXO DQG XQLTXH guest book at their wedding—all the guests signed a quilt made by the groom’s grandmother. This is something they will treasure for a lifetime. With similar sentiment, one of my brides accented her bouquet with her grandmother’s rosary, a testament to the love and faith of her grandmother. Such details as these are the ones that make the wedding day so memorable. Although these touches may not be something that guests notice, these complements are important to the bride and groom; and that is what matters most.

Page 10 { January 2018 { Bluffs & Bayous

Bringing Two Families Together One of my brides designed the most adorable family crest for her and her husband. They used the crest on all sorts of items for the wedding from invitations to glassware. I loved the unity it gave to the event. As a bonus, the newlyweds could use their new crest on a variety of occasions. $ Ă€UVW IRU PH DQG , KRSH QRW D ODVW RQH of my couples had their pups, one representing the bride and the other representing the groom, in the ceremony—a special addition to the joining of two families. And it was everything you can imagine. I think these pups stole several hearts that day, too. Simple Additions. Big Impact. Lighting is such a key factor in the overall ambience of an event. Candles can transpire a table from something fabulous to something over the top. Lining window sills or mantels with pillar candles brings all the drama without a huge price tag. There are endless ways to light your event—from bistro lighting, chandeliers, and uplighting, to the lighting your band may bring to crank the party to that next level. If your venue doesn’t allow actual candles, have no fear; there are now effecWLYH Ă DPHOHVV RSWLRQV WKDW ZRQ¡W JR RXW DW WKH Ă€UVW JXVW RI ZLQG %H VXUH QRW WR RYHU look the impact these additions can make.

Having a wedding during the day and feeling like you are missing out on the magic of lighting? I recently had a bride schedule her ceremony time at the exact time of day that the church’s stained glass was brilliantly illuminated by the sun and set a glow over the entire ceremony. Talk about impact. Lastly and most importantly, it is your day so cater it to you. Don’t feel the need to follow trends or what your best friend is doing. You do you as a couple! That way,

when you look back, you will know the day was stamped one hundred percent by your likes and tastes! I hope these few inspirations have given you some ideas for your big day. Women of Merit Week erit Health Natchez sponsored its first Women of Merit Week October 9-14, 2017; and it was an overwhelming success. The week’s activities were designed to help educate, inspire, and bring awareness to women’s health. The week began with a Women’s Expo Event held at the Natchez Convention Center. Participants included local yoga instructors, massage therapists, models wearing the latest in fall fashions, Adams County Sheriff’s Department officers teaching selfdefense techniques, make-up artists, and more. The hospital booths provided information on nutrition, heart disease, depression, maternity matters, and other health-related topics. The hospital, with the support of Mayor Darryl Grennell, the Boards of Aldermen and Supervisors, and the Natchez Chamber of Commerce, proclaimed Friday, October 13, 2017, as Paint Natchez Pink Day.

The evening started with a cocktail hour. Elements Catering and Floral Design created an elegant buffet that was served under a clear tent adorned with beautiful chandeliers, tea-light candles, and white floral arrangements. The bride’s five-tiered strawberry cake with creamcheese icing was created by Sugar Rush Bakery. The cake was adorned with pale pink roses and eucalyptus touches surrounded by the bridesmaids’ splendid bouquets. The groom’s table was decorated with pictures of his favorite pastimes such as hunting and skiing, with the center of attention being banana pudding, his favorite dessert. Boogieing the night away to music by Doctor Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monsters, guests danced with glo-sticks and wore seventies wigs and kitten ears in honor of Kit, the groom. Clouds of white confetti and a magnificent surprise fireworks display celebrated the couple as they departed the reception. A brunch at the Covington House, hosted by the bride’s grandmother, Gladys McCain, and the bride’s aunt, Jane Johnston, both of Eupora, Mississippi, honored the bride and her bridesmaids the morning of the wedding. On the eve of the wedding, the groom’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner at Fernwood Country Club for the wedding party, family, and close friends. Following a honeymoon to Riviera Maya, Mexico, the couple has made their home in Summit, Mississippi.
