hen planning a wedding, traditions abound for the bride RU JURRP WR FRQVLGHU ZKHQ ÀQDOL]LQJ GHWDLOV IRU WKH ELJ day. Will the vows be traditional or individually composed? Will guests be asked to pick a side to be seated on or have a seat on either? What will be your old and your new? How about something borrowed and something blue? One tradition that stands out to me in the wedding revelry is the penny placed in the bride’s shoe. I did a little research and found WKDW WKH WUDGLWLRQ ZDV SRSXODUL]HG E\ WKH FHQWXULHV ROG QXSWLDO O\ULF “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe.” In Great Britain, a bride’s father places the coin in his daughter’s right shoe to wish her good fortune and happiness in her marriage before walking her down the aisle. Also in Mother England, wedding guests place a silver coin in the corks popped from the bottles of bubbly and give these to the bride and groom as a keepsake. Other countries have traditions as well. In Poland, wedding guests throw a “confetti” of coins at the happily wedded couple. In Spain, the groom gives a coin to his bride during the ceremony as a symbol of forever; this coin is passed down from generation to generation. Whether placing a memorable coin in your shoe on your wedding day brings you the best of luck or not, why monkey with tradition on your big day? Enjoy a new year of weddings, celebrations, and traditions along and beyond the Mississippi.

Budgeting the Big Day Hello all! I hope your holiday season was splendid and that you are looking forward to this exciting New Year! 3ODQQLQJ D ZHGGLQJ DQG SULRULWL]LQJ \RXU EXGJHW" &KHFN RXW P\ tidbits below on areas to save and splurge. Feeling like you have yet WR FRYHU DOO WKH ÀQDO GHWDLOV" , HQG WKH VHJPHQW ZLWK D IHZ UHPLQGers of those things that are sometimes overlooked. SPLURGE: Music is the heart of the reception. It keeps the beat going and your guests grooving. Depending on the setting, anything from a VWULQJ TXDUWHW WR D IXOO 1HZ 2UOHDQV MD]] EDQG RU D '- WKDW EULQJV WKH party together can all be perfect options—as long as a professional is hired and not a cousin with an iPod and some speakers! Let the cousin enjoy the reception and know your music splurge was well worth it. Page 12 { January 2017 { Bluffs & Bayous

If music is the heart, then food is the soul. Reception = Eat. Drink. Be Married. People love to eat, especially in the South, y’all. Good food speaks to our soul. We seek it in travel, at home, the holidays, and where else—the wedding reception. If your cuisine makes our taste buds sing, you’ll go down in history! People remember good food. As for videographers, there is nothing like seeing your big day played back to you in real life. The movement captures something magical. Seeing your wedding day take place before your eyes is truly worth the splurge. SAVE: Don’t get me wrong: I adore favors. Homemade, custom designs, or over the top, you name it; I love it! But if you are looking for areas to cut back, favors are your opportunity. For 150 guests with each favor being approximately $5, that saves you $750.

You can have a full bar with not the topshelf spirits. This is merely one way to cut back on expense. Go for something midrange, and watch that bar bill drop. Your guests are there to celebrate you. If topshelf is a must, by all means! Another item that you can get away without having is the programs, especially if yours is an outdoor wedding. If you are having a formal church wedding where your guests participate, print the programs. Otherwise, they are a beautiful expense that gets tossed.

knowing all those small details have been taken care of. (Prior to your big day, be sure to delegate someone to retrieve these items after everything winds down.) Your getaway car often is the last thing on your mind when planning your wedding, but it certainly is crucial. Be sure to have the details of your departure planned in advance. This element of your wedding can be a splurge or save! Splurge by renting a gorgeous vintage Rolls Royce or a sleek limo. Save by having a family friend or relative provide your ride! After an evening full of dancing and enjoying your reception, the

last thing you want to worry with is how you make it to your honeymoon. It has been a true delight getting to share these few tips with you. Whether you are the one planning a wedding or just a lover of weddings, I hope you enjoy this muchanticipated wedding edition of Bluffs & Bayous <RX FDQ ÀQG PH UHDGLQJ LW FRYHU to cover. Abagail is a Natchez native and graduate of Trinity Episcopal High School and Louisiana Tech University. She has returned home, with her husband Phillip, and started her wedding planning business, à deux events.

THE FORGOTTEN DETAILS: Who is cutting the cake? You can always ask your caterer (if he or she offers this service), your wedding planner, or a family member or friend. People want that cake! Believe me. When it comes to getting those pieces sliced and plated, you want WR NHHS WKH Ă RZ JRLQJ 'RQ¡W IRUJHW WKH groom’s cake either! I always love to add a couple of slices of cake to the couple’s getaway bag or to-go box from the caterer (This may be another favor to request!). Make a list of items you would like to save from the wedding and reception. Items may include the cork from the champagne bottle, the top tier of your cake, your EULGDO ERXTXHW WR EH GULHG RU D IHZ Ă RZHUV from a centerpiece to be pressed. This recipe must have made the rounds as I had several people tell me about it. Sue Purvis brought me the recipe. You use as much cheese as you like. There is really no measurement of the ingredients; and from what they all told me, it is impossible to mess it up.

Given in marriage by her parents and escorted to the altar by her father, the bride wore an Ivory Mori Lee by Madeline Gardner fit-and-flare gown with a sweetheart bodice, lace cap sleeves, and a lace-illusion back. The gown was adorned with crystal beading, embroidered appliqués, a scalloped hemline with a sheer cathedral-length train, and an ivory cathedrallength veil. She also wore a pearl bracelet given to her by her parents on the eve of the wedding. She carried a classically shaped bouquet of white and blush roses, white ranunculus, and pale pink antique English garden roses. The roses and ranunculus were arranged petal to petal eliminating the need for any greenery. Tucked into the Bride’s bouquet was her father’s monogrammed handkerchief. Attending the bride as her matron of honor was Angela Gill of Osyka, Mississippi. Bridesmaids were Kristen Adams of Hattiesburg, sister-in-law of the bride; Lauren Brumfield of Hammond, Louisiana; Lizzie Catchot of Gulfport, Mississippi; Haley Mayo of Richton, Mississippi; Charly Ott of McComb; Chelsea Simmons of Kentwood, Louisiana; Shelby Wallace of Madison, Mississippi; and Allison White and Holli White, both of Summit, sisters of the groom. The bridesmaids wore blush-colored, full-length, high-neckline, key-hole-backed chiffon dresses, complemented with pearl earrings given to them by the bride. Their bouquets were smaller versions of the bride’s with the same flowers in a soft palette of colors. Program attendants were Mary Linda Remley of McComb and Anna Prestridge of Starkville, Mississippi. Brooklyn Bass of McComb served as the bride’s proxy during the rehearsal. Keith White, father of the groom, served as best man. Groomsmen included Kyle Adams of Hattiesburg, brother of the bride; Jeffrey White of Brookhaven, brother of the groom; Daniel Lofton of Brandon, Mississippi; Jeremy James, Paxton King, Taylor Newman, Nick Smith, Patrick Wallace, and Hunter Wilson, all of Brookhaven. The groom and the groomsmen wore Vera Wang tuxedos in charcoal accented with a single antique rose boutonnière. An antique urn in the church vestibule held a large garden bouquet created with bells of Ireland, French hydrangeas, garden roses, and a mixture of fern and eucalyptus greenery. Gracing the church’s large exterior doors were four boxwood wreaths tied with pale blush silk ribbons. The sanctuary of the church was decorated with a sacred theme using one large wooden cross on which cascading flowers and ivy were placed. The cross was elevated behind the bride and groom. Ferns and greenery completed the simple and sacred setting. Another element of the sacred service included a lace-covered, antique table as the setting for the couple’s communion. Atop the table were antique silver goblets and an antique bowl left to the bride’s mother by her beloved namesake.

Pianist Shane Adams of McComb, cousin of the bride, played a selection of ceremonial music, and the vocalist was Erin Alford of McComb. Mandie Carney directed both the rehearsal and the ceremony. Capturing the evening’s memories was Kelly Nevels of Kelly Nevels Photography in McComb along with videographer Steve Craven of Clinton, Mississippi. Michael Guttuso of McComb designed the flowers and decorations for the wedding and the reception. Hosted by the bride’s parents, the wedding reception was held at Fernwood Country Club. The bride and groom drove to the reception in a 1968 Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang. Large parlor palms in antique garden urns stood sentinel at the entrance to the club where companion boxwood wreaths, matching those at the church, graced the double doors through which guests entered the reception. Large bouquets of flowers and French hydrangeas accented the reception hall; and each table held a tall floral arrangement of French hydrangeas, bells of Ireland, and mixed garden and antique roses, gathered in a glass cylinder and surrounded by votives, creating a romantic ambience for the

event. The club’s chef, Angela Ross, satisfying everyone’s taste, presented a beautiful array of foods. Bottoms Up Band from Louisiana entertained the guests. Estelle Schillings of Magnolia, Mississippi, prepared the bride’s white, five-tier cake filled with Bavarian cream cheese. The layers were covered with ivory icing, edged with pearls, and monogrammed with a large W. It was decorated with fresh flowers and roses. The groom’s red velvet cake in the shape of a Yeti Cooler was prepared by Rose Atwater of Meadville, Mississippi. On the eve of the wedding, the groom’s parents honored the couple with a rehearsal dinner at their home in Summit. The buffetstyle dinner was prepared by Chef Ken Dixon of Mitchell’s in Brookhaven. Wendy Putt of Fresh Cut in Flowood, Mississippi, provided the decorations and floral arrangements. Charlie Roberts One Man Band & DJ Show of Florida was the DJ for the evening. After a week-long honeymoon to Barbados, the couple is at home in Summit where the bride is self-employed at Malibu Salon as a hair stylist and the groom is a sales manager at Keith White Ford Lincoln McComb.

The bride began her wedding day at the beautiful Brentwood House of McComb with a bridal luncheon hosted by family friends. To complete her dream wedding, she wore her mother’s wedding dress. With taste and style much like her mother’s, the bride needed very few alterations in the dress; these were done by Hayle Whitehead of Southern Belle Boutique in Summit, Mississippi. The dress was a one-of-a-kind Bill Blass creation of white silk organza with a white satin band around the chapel-length train, and a ruffled, deep V back. Antique gold crystal beading was added around the neckline, belt, and train, a bit of the bride’s own unique flare. Complementing her gown, the bride wore her grandmother’s pearls; and completing her bridal ensemble, were distressed-white cowboy boots that her mother had embellished with matching appliqués and crystals. With a love of blue,

the bride chose misty blue, floor-length Bari Jay gowns for her bridesmaids. To reflect her love of Texas A&M University where the couple met, maroon was added to the wedding as an accent color for the groomsmen and the flowers. Kelly Hart from The Flower Nook of McComb arranged flowers for the ceremony. The bride’s bouquet featured cream dinner plate dahlias, burgundy scabiosa, artemesia, millet, and green wheat. Deborah Tucker and Cathy Brown of Brandon, Mississippi, arranged the reception flowers, incorporating locallysourced wild flowers, fall grasses, and seedpods. Michele Milliet, the bride’s aunt, helped decorate and coordinate the special day. The ceremony was held atop a rolling hill at the Lazy H Ranch. The bride and her father rode on horseback up to the wedding site to strains of “The Kiss” from Last of the Mohicans. The Jackson String Quartet performed all the music. Music minister, Christopher Hart, along with cousins of the bride, Riley and Reagan Milliet, sang “Red Is the Rose”; and later, the trio sang “Hallelujah.” The reception, also held at the ranch, began with a cocktail hour and passed hors d’oeuvres featuring Grannie Annie’s devilled eggs, crawfish

hand-pies, and chanterelle toasts. The reception food was placed atop wooden farm tables made by the bride’s father and husband-to-be from weathered fence boards collected at the ranch. The food, catered by Ken Dixon of Brookhaven, Mississippi, showcased both Mississippi and Texas favorites. The bride’s cake, topped with lovebirds, was a two-tier almond flavored cake with lemon and pineapple fillings created by Estelle Schilling of Magnolia. The groom’s cake, a red velvet cake with white chocolate ganache, created by Peggy Lee of Brandon, was made to look like tooled leather with the groom’s brand embossed on the top. Surrounding the groom’s cake was an assortment of sweets gathered by all of the families’ closest friends. This display included chocolate meringue pie, pralines, buttermilk pie, coconut cake, and Texas sheet cake. Under the intricately lit pavilion, the Trey Lewis Band kicked off the couple’s first dance with “God Gave Me You.” The favor table was lined with homemade jalapeno and habañero pepper jelly, cowboy candy, and blueberry preserves for people to take home and enjoy. After a honeymoon in Quebec City, Canada, the couple is now at home in College Station, Texas.
