n July 25, 2014, in Natchez, Mississippi, food lovers from all over the Miss-Lou area flocked to the Natchez Convention Center to enjoy savory samplings of wine, craft beer, entrees, and desserts from breweries, bakeries, and restaurants from New Orleans, Louisiana, all the way up to Memphis, Tennessee. Three days filled with food-centered events, the Natchez Food and Wine Festival never disappoints and leaves the locals in awe with Tastings Along the River as the weekend’s opener.

You can do your favorite margaritas, Mexican beer, ice-cold limeade, or glass of cool refreshing sangria. 7KH ÀUVW VDQJULD FDPH IURP P\ GDXJKWHU /DUL It is a light sangria that is good for people that like white wine. The recipe came from a friend.

WHITE FRUIT SANGRIA 2 white or regular peaches, pitted and sliced into wedges 1 lemon, sliced crosswise into wheels 1 cup green grapes, halved 1 cup fresh cherries, pitted 1 bottle dry white wine 3 sprigs fresh mint, plus more for garnish Ice 1 liter plain sparkling water Place the fruit into a large (at lease seven cups) pitcher, and pour the wine over the top. Cover and chill completely for one to two hours. When ready to serve, add two or more cups of the sparkling water.

The following salsa recipe is one that has been handed around, and its origins are unknown. It is easy to make; you just need to try to hold out two days before you eat it.

The Feel of the Fair

Bringing home a blue ribbon meant a lot to WKH ZLQQHU FKLOG DQG DGXOW DOLNH ,W ZDV D FRQĂ€UPDWLRQ WKDW WKHLU particular effort was the top of the line. I know that it meant little in the general scheme of things, but the blue ribbon winners got to be in the spotlight for a bit of local fame. Of course, the parish fair meant that a carnival had come to town with all the smells and sounds that we all associate with the travel LQJ VKRZV 7KH JDPHV RI FKDQFH ZHUH D JUHDW FKDOOHQJH WR \RXQJ and old alike, and the rides thrilled all. Well, not exactly all, for I ZDV RQH RI WKH LOO IDYRUHG ZKR FRXOG JHW VLFN MXVW ZDWFKLQJ VRPH RI those rides spin and whirl. 7KH 7LOW D :KLUO DQG WKH 6FUDPEOHU ZRXOG GR PH LQ HYHU\ WLPH I’d have to try riding them; but by the end of the second ride, I ZDV GRQH IRU WKH GD\ DV IDU DV IHHOLQJ GHFHQW ZDV FRQFHUQHG 7KH )HUULV :KHHO VHHPHG IRUW\ VWRULHV KLJK WR PH D WUXH DFURSKRELF 2QH \HDU P\ IULHQG 6RQMD :DJQHU WDONHG PH LQWR ULGLQJ WKH )HUULV :KHHO ZLWK KHU 6KH KDG QRW WKH IHDU RI KHLJKWV WKDW VHL]HG PH D few feet off the ground; and when we started up on the cycle, she started rocking our seat. All I could do was hold on and threaten under my breath to pay her back if I ever got off that thing. On top of the rocking and the height, the fool operator stopped us right on top when it came time to start letting people off; so our descent was oh so slow. I think WKDW¡V ZKHQ P\ KHDG JRW LWV Ă€UVW JUD\ KDLU I don’t know when the parish fairs ended, but my next fair was LQ 6KUHYHSRUW ZKHQ P\ GDXJKWHUV ZHUH VKRZLQJ DQLPDOV LQ + 7KHUH ZHUH HQRXJK NLGV DURXQG IRU WKHP WR ULGH ZLWK VR , FRXOG MXVW FKDSHURQH ZLWKRXW KDYLQJ WR ULGH , ZRXOG ULGH WKH 0HUU\ *R 5RXQG ZLWK &ODLUH DQG , HYHQ URGH WKDW JLDQW )HUULV :KHHO ZLWK KHU a few times.
