PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Nancy Cummins

Change does not necessarily assure progress, but progress implacable requires change . . . Education is essential to change, for education creates both new wants and the ability to satisfy them. Henry Steele Commager

A

s I am writing this message I marvel at the fact that over three quarters of the year is gone. Times flows by so quickly. Many of you are starting to plan for the new year and the “changes” you need to make. “Change,” a small word that can strike fear in people. Change has always been difficult, but now more so than ever. I once heard it said that change was an event enjoyed only by wet babies. But, change we must if we are going to keep up with these ever growing times. A few years ago we may have seen a set timeline as “gradual change,” today that same amount of time allocated to making a change would be seen as hesitating and being “left in the dust.” Now, one of the biggest challenges a leader must adjust to, is the rapidity of change. A recent MCAA President said that he planned to be an active part of his business for the foreseeable future, but admitted to feeling awed by the fact that when he came into the business they were using carbon paper, and today he is getting his copies of necessary information off the internet. Admittedly, that is a great deal of change in a relatively short time. As surely as delivering a quality project, meeting a deadline, or being up on the best material, the ability to quickly change is a necessity for today’s contractors who plan to be successful. The question becomes: “How do we embrace change and make it happen for our companies?” Here are some tips for you to consider: 1. Accept change with enthusiasm. It is a necessary part of being in business, face it head-on 2. Educate yourself. By remaining a constant student of the mechanical industry, it will help you keep your eye on those up and coming things that will give you the edge you will need. 3. Educate your management team and employees. It is important for all levels of your business to be interested in learning everything they can about our industry. Make sure that you reward them as they offer suggestions for change and innovation. [6]

Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractor | Winter 2016

4. View change as progress. Embrace the process, but remember, any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts. Realize that you have to risk failure, in order to succeed. This is just a partial outline, we hope it will help as you begin to make your list of changes for the upcoming year.

MCAA SAFETY SEMINAR SEPTEMBER 15, 2016 Michigan MCA, MPMCA, MCA Detroit, WMMCA and 3MCA had Pete Chaney, MCAA Director of Safety and Health, Marc Jamrose, Regional Manager and Ryan Halicek, Sales Representative of DeWalt Eastern Great Lakes, present at the MCAA Safety Issues Update Seminar held on September 15, 2016 in Okemos, Michigan. Mr. Chaney presented a video of an electric arc welding injury issue as well as a Magnetic Ground Clamp. The ground clamp is a safety feature for those welders who are working in temperatures that cause excessive perspiration resulting in wet gloves and clothing. Other subjects covered by Pete Chaney were Fab Shop Safety Manuals, Subcontractor Safety Management, and Radiation Awareness. Radiation in the field is something all workers must deal with both from construction sites as well as those doing service work. Microwave production being the worse and avoiding these areas by 6 to 10 feet minimum, when not in proper gear, should be recognized. OSHA’s revised, “Tracking of Workplace Injuries & Illnesses and Recordkeeping” was covered. A silica exposure and respiratory protection video was presented as well as the “Control Plan Enforcement” connected to OSHA’s new Silica Standard. Marc Jamrose of DeWalt had the attendees go outside to a tent for a demonstration where the drilling of concrete was shown to be a heavy producer of silica. Then a demonstration was viewed of State of the Art Silica Protection Power Tools and all the safety features now provided for those working on silica producing projects. Marc Jamrose of DeWalt, the only USA based tool manufacturer, also conducted a demonstration of their new wireless generators made for job sites or homes.

SAFETY PAYS

SPECIALTY CONTRACTORS WORKERS COMPENSATION GROUP PROGRAM Members Earn Workers Compensation Dividend of $180,000

Participating Businesses Share Workers Compensation Group Dividend from Accident Fund Insurance Company of America Over 50 businesses will share over $180,000 premium dividend thanks to safe work practices and their participation in Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors Association’s Workers Compensation Group Dividend Program. This program is available through the Specialty Contractors Workers Compensation Group Program who belong to one of the following trade associations; Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors Association, Michigan Chapter of the Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning National Association, the Michigan Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association and the Detroit Chapter of Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning National Association. The dividend returned is based on each participant’s premium costs and range from $120 to over $14,000, with an average dividend of over $1,500. In addition to dividend opportunities, the Specialty Contractors dividend program offers participating businesses a 5% discount on their worker’s compensation insurance premium rates. While keeping people healthy and injury-free is vital in its own right, it is also an important factor in the ability to earn a dividend. Safety at work leads to fewer injuries and fewer worker’s compensation claims.

“It’s a fact – safety pays. A safe work environment is not only great for employees, it’s great for the bottom line,” says Accident Fund’s group program consultant. “We’re proud to be able to present the Specialty Contractors Group with this dividend for members in this program.” Accident Fund’s Loss prevention consultants work with policyholders on safe work practices and teach employee safety training. The company also offers an online “tool box” where policyholders can link to federal and state workplace safety websites.

“Encouraging safety in the workplace while offering an Associationonly plan that can provide real money back is definitely a win-win situation,” said Cynthia Maher, Executive Director of the Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors Association. “The Accident Fund Workers Compensation Program is one of many innovative strategies we have put in place to help our members more effectively control their costs.”
