New fields promise to boost Viera-Suntree athletics BY CHRIS BONANNO

Viera Regional Park will soon be home to seven new fields that feature AstroTurf surfaces that will host various football, soccer and lacrosse events. Two of the fields at the park, located at the complex off Fran Jamieson Way, already had been completed at the time of a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 1 in Viera. Don Walker, communications director for Brevard County Government, said that all of

the fields would be completed and ready for use in October. “These are football, soccer and lacrosse fields, and it’s about a $6 million investment to put AstroTurf on these fields so we can use the fields year-round,” Walker said. “We’re not going to have games rained out because of the bad weather. We’ll be able to have kids out here playing all year long.” Walker added that the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA), which also operates the

baseball and softball fields in and around Space Coast Stadium, will be in charge of maintenance when the fields are completed. “It’s going to save the county money over the next 10 years on the maintenance of these fields, which runs around $70,000 for each field. And, hopefully if they are able to take it over in (perpetuity), it’ll be even more savings down the road,” Walker said. That won’t be the only way residents see benefits from the new turf fields, added Bonnie King, deputy director of the Space Coast Office of Tourism, with the idea that tournaments will be held attracting teams from outside of Brevard similar to the way it’s been occurring at the baseball and softball fields. “We have that, and then we have the idea of all the economic impact that this will have in our community,” King said. “Staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, you

Suntree/Viera Youth Football League, which plays its home games at the park. According to league commissioner Chad Vice, there were issues regarding rain impacting the fields when they were grass and there were potholes that caused safety issues for participants. “In all honesty, when it comes to the safety of our kids that’s what we care about the most,” Vice said. But those concerns are no longer an issue, and Vice also noted the installation of the new turf fields already was boosting enrollment with his organization. “When I showed up this morning and I had a football with me and I gave them a football and they ran out on that thing, the expression on their face said it all,” Vice added. “That is all worth it because of that right there. Brevard County passes anti-sanctuary resolution BY CHRIS BONANNO

The Brevard County Commission passed a resolution at a meeting Aug. 14 in Viera that prohibits the adoption of sanctuary policies in the county. “I strongly, strongly believe in legal immigration,” said District 3 County Commissioner John Tobia, who introduced the resolution. “I just have an issue with illegal immigration.” Per the Brevard County government website, the resolution “directs the County Manager to ensure that neither the County Manager nor his staff develop, endorse or enforce policies which knowingly prohibit or impede communication or cooperation with a federal immigration agency with respect to federal immigration enforcement, including, but not limited to, limiting or preventing a state entity, local governmental entity or law enforcement agency from lawfully: • Complying with an immigration detainer; • Initiating an immigration status investigation; or • Assisting or cooperating with a federal immigration

Though the Commission did ultimately adopt the resolution, they didn’t do so without hearing from some of their constituents who were opposed to the adoption of the resolution. About 50 people, including members from the Space Coast Progressive Alliance and the American Civil Liberties Union, made their voices heard before and during the meeting. Most of the speakers in a roughly 70-minute long public speaking session came out against the resolution. “More than ever, we need leaders who will bring our community together and not those who will further divide us. Instead, County Commissioner John Tobia has decided to blow his dog whistle in an attempt to villainize and de-humanize the immigrant population in this country and in this county,’’ said Sanjay Patel, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida’s 8th district in prepared remarks prior to

New fountain, revamped park introduced at The Avenue Viera BY CHRIS BONANNO

Patrons at The Avenue Viera will have the opportunity to experience new amenities at the complex moving forward as the complex has renovated its Central Park and added a new children’s pop fountain in front of the AMC Movie Theaters complex. “One of the things that we’re trying to do is create a sense of community for the people that come here, said Kevin Cedik, general manager of The Avenue Viera. “We obviously have great shopping, we have dining and we have entertainment. All of which we are adding and we continue to grow on. But, we wanted to add some more amenities to the site to give people another alternative to do while they’re here.” The renovations to the park, Cedik said, have opened up more space in the area. It also, he said, opened up more space for what he calls “soft seating” and gives organizers more flexibility for events. Diane Thomas and Dawn Garrison, co-owners of Empower Fitness, located in The Avenue, both expressed excitement for the revamped park.

Ella Nessel is the first child to play in the new pop jet fountain in front of AMC Theaters at The Avenue Viera.

“I think it’s amazing. It looks beautiful and I think it’s just going to draw in a whole different clientele as well as the existing Viera clientele,” Thomas said. “It will bring other people in. …. It’s a family setting, but it’s also like a Central Park setting. So, it’s almost like an urban citytype feel.” “I can definitely see myself bringing my kids here. My husband and I just sitting and relaxing and enjoying an evening out. It’s beautiful,” Garrison said. The pop jet fountain features a number of different streams of water that

periodically shoot up from the ground with the streams routinely changing colors as well. “The pop-up fountain over there I think is going to draw a lot of kids with a lot of moms,” Thomas added. The new additions were officially unveiled at an Aug. 16 ribbon-cutting ceremony. In addition to the ribboncutting ceremony, The Avenue also celebrated the new openings with activities on Aug. 18 and 19 that featured face painting, live music and games for children according to Cedik and The Avenue Viera’s Facebook page. President Alan Frisher. The donation will be made via a global grant through Rotary International, which will match funds raised by the Suntree Rotary Club “four of five times more,” according to Frisher. Frisher said the idea for donating to the hospitals in Honduras came after speaking with Woody McDaniel, who has traveled with members of the Faith Viera Lutheran Church to the Central American nation and donated his time there for parts of two decades. “The unemployment in that area is probably about 50 percent of the people. They just don’t have any way to support themselves,” said McDaniel, who said he has been part of a group with that church that has helped build an orphanage, church and some apartments. “They just need any kind of help that they can get for the hospital.” Some of the funds will be raised at their 15th annual Great Tastes at Suntree event, Frisher said, that will be held Oct. 20. “Certainly, we’re getting some matching funds from other Rotary clubs,” Frisher said. “We’ve reached out and gotten a few thousand dollars from rotary clubs in our district, but we also have to raise another $8,000,

$10,000 of our own dollars, and some of that is going to come from our Great Tastes at Suntree.” In addition to funding the donation of the supplies, portions of the money raised from that event, which Frisher says typically raises between $10,000 to $13,000, also will benefit the Boys and Girls Club and the Children’s Hunger Project. Frisher added that at least two Rotarians will head down to Honduras to ensure that the supplies get delivered. He added that he and the club are searching for organizations that can provide air travel for the trip. The club also is involved in other charitable and philanthropic activities. In just the last 18 months alone, the club has staged at least 20 such endeavors, which include donations to organizations such as the Brevard Rescue Mission and Family Promise of Brevard along with group cleanups of parts of Wickham Road and the Suntree Rotary Park. “Rotary does a lot around the country and certainly around our community. We’ve been doing this for a long time,” Frisher added. Those interested in more information about the Suntree Rotary Club can go to suntreerotary.org. VV

Viera has new faces, tough schedule ... and high expectations BY CARL KOTALA

They’ve got some new faces in key positions, a new head coach who promises to bring more intensity, and an opening schedule that might be the most brutal in Brevard County. But don’t tell the Viera Hawks they won’t be one of the top teams in Central Florida once again. And while most people will point to Viera’s defense as a big reason for that, don’t sleep on an offensive unit that has a lot of potential playmakers. “It could be the most exciting offense we’ve had,” Viera coach Derek Smith said. “They’re youthful, but very exciting. We’re more run/pass orientated with a quarterback with the capability of taking it to the house every time he touches the football.” That would be sophomore Bryce Norton, who takes over for Tim DeMorat.

vieravoice.com

Already known for his running ability, Norton took big steps in the passing game during the summer. With defenses expected to pay a lot of attention to slot receiver Sean Atkins — who caught 13 touchdown passes last season — it could only make things easier for fellow slot receivers Jordy Emmons and Jeremiah Housey along with outside receivers Shamaar Mohr, Caleb Osburn and Karsten Poole. “This year, the focus is on Sean, so I feel like that’s going to open me up a lot,” Mohr said. “A lot of teams don’t really know about me. I feel like that’s going to be really good.” Newcomer Jarvelle Francis will see time at running back along with Jalen Housey and Kevin Chandler. The offensive line is set with Andrew Hart and Brady Touzet at the tackles, Chris Murphy and Hunter Plotkin at the guard spots and Gavin

Lamp at center. Originally set to play tackle, Lamp has been moved inside with Touzet, a sophomore, on the outside. Another sophomore, Cooper Liston, also should see action. Lamp, who played center in youth football, is happy about the move. “It’s going back to my roots,” he said. “I’m super excited to get back to center.” Defensively, Viera will be led up front by ends Aaron Thomas and Julius Barfield along with tackles Cooper Davis and Jackson Hatfield. Bear Bollinger and Andre Jones will man the outside linebacker spots with Hunter Lee and Dan Steen lining up inside. The secondary will feature Cortez Reid and Garrett Kaminsky at the corner spots with Quez Menyfield at safety. Viera will start the season with five consecutive road games — Vero Beach

Smith, who took over the program from childhood friend Kevin Mays, was Viera’s defensive coordinator the past four seasons. Asked what difference fans

will notice between a Derek Smith coached team and a Mays coached squad, Smith simply said: “intensity.” “Defense is more intensity, where offense is more finesse. I want to bring more intensity to the football program,” Smith said. “Whereas the offense last year was finesse, I want us to smash people.” VV

Viera’s Rousseau, Schmadeke dedicated to diving BY JULIE STURGEON

Viera High School graduate Sarah Rousseau has packed her bags and left for the University of Missouri on a scholarship, thanks to her long list of diving accomplishments and awards. Rousseau, who competes at the USA Diving Senior National level, won three state

She then placed 12th in the 2017 USA Diving National Championships. Lana Schmadeke, a 13-yearold Viera resident who attends Edgewood Junior/ Senior High School, hopes to follow Rousseau’s pathway to success. Schmadeke is ranked No. 1 nationally in the Dive Meets scoring system for AAU Diving, Group B. She has a strategy to avoid being nervous before a dive. “When you feel scared about a dive and then you finally get it, it’s a feeling of accomplishment, Schmadeke said. “I like competing in diving, I am mostly comfortable in the 1 meter.” To reach their diving objectives, Rousseau and Schmadeke maintain busy practice schedules. Schmadeke attends diving practice six days a week at the pools at Satellite High or Rockledge High. She also has dry-land practice three times a week. At the dry-land

facility, divers train using trampolines, harnesses and conditioning. “During the school year, I don’t get home until around 7,” Schmadeke said. “I shower, eat dinner and do homework for the rest of the night. The addition of Nickson and Coleman, who did not play last year, plus a healthy Hill should have a big impact on the Tigers’ season. “With Seth at defensive end, we’re adding a Division I, Power Five (conference) guy to the team,” Hooks said. “And then (you add) a quarterback who has poise, has leadership and can run and throw. As the only three seniors on this year’s Holy Trinity volleyball team, Lara Boos, Aly Tyson and Jenna Panarese know this is their chance to leave their mark on the Tigers’ program. “I’m extremely motivated,” Panarese said. “I’m very excited to see what this year holds, honestly.” Given all the new faces on the Tigers’ roster, it will certainly be interesting to see just how far they go this season. But with five straight district titles and three consecutive trips to the regional finals, one thing

is for sure: The expectations haven’t changed. “We lost a lot last year,” Holy Trinity coach Pete Klonowski said. “We had pretty much an eightplayer rotation, and five of them are no longer here. We’re having to replace a lot. But you know what? The younger players, they can step up. I think they’re capable. “They’re doing a pretty good job. They’re learning more and more about the system and how we play. And the older ones are doing a good job of stepping up and mentoring.”

Holy Trinity will look to win its sixth consecutive district championship this season. Boos and Tyson, along with junior Emily Noe, were part of that eight-player rotation the Tigers used last season. They seemed to like the way the new players were fitting in. “Going into our team camp, a lot of new girls came and joined us, and I think a few

of us were uneasy about how it would go,” Boos said. “But ending the team camp, I think we all grew as a team. We’re going to come out pretty strong this year.” And as team leaders, the seniors will make sure this is a team that sticks together. “We’re planning on doing a lot of team bonding this year, more than we did last year, so we can bond on and off the court as well,” Tyson said. One big change the Tigers are making is moving Boos from the middle to the outside where she can get more swings and help the offense. This figures to be a team that will only get stronger as the season goes along and the players get more familiar with each other. “We’re putting in a lot of work right now,” Boos said. “And that’s going to help us come out strong at the beginning of the season. But I think as the season goes on, everybody’s going to learn a lot about each other, and with each other, and that’s going to benefit the team going into the playoffs.” And a sixth consecutive district title would certainly be nice. “It’s promising,” Klonowski said. ‘Our goals aren’t going to change. We’re going to work hard to win that district championship. That’s how we always want to start every campaign.” VV

Strong team play could lead to success for Viera volleyball BY CARL KOTALA

With five new players on this year’s Viera High School volleyball team, including two freshmen, the Hawks likely will spend the first part of the year getting to know each other’s games. “Right now, it’s a process of seeing how we can all blend together,” Viera coach Sarah Wayne said. “We have a little bit of new blood, mixed in with some veteran seniors. We’re going to try to fit the pieces together.” Led by seniors Taylor Jensen, Shaine Horvath and Tory Kolaski — plus junior co-captain Delaney Goff — the Hawks already appeared to have some good team chemistry going before their season even started. “We’ve all gotten to know each other really well, so (it shows) on the court,” Jensen said. That includes the two freshmen — Kelly Merz and Hannah Bradford — who will be defensive specialists for the Hawks this season. “They’re ready to go,” Wayne said. “They’re coming in and they’re hungry. They’re freshmen. They want to prove themselves. You can just kind of tell. I think the acclimation process has been pretty fast.” Like several Viera teams of the past, the Hawks won’t be blessed with a lot of height this season, so they’re working on ways to work

more this year.” And the more they play as a team, the more dangerous the Hawks will be. “I think we’ll pull together on the court and that will help us play a lot better,” Jensen said. V V

That’s what we’ve been focusing on. We want to keep teams in our control.” That will be especially important in a district that contains talented teams such as Hagerty, Harmony, Melbourne, Celebration, St. Cloud, Liberty and newcomer Tohopekaliga of Kissimmee. Goals, challenges drive Mullins in new role BY CHRIS BONANNO

Dr. Mark Mullins has officially assumed the role of superintendent of Brevard Public Schools, having taken the reigns officially on Aug. 11. Mullins, who has 24 years of experience with BPS as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, deputy superintendent and chief operating officer, has a number of goals and challenges ahead of him. Recently, he sat down with the Viera Voice to discuss those issues. He also offered some thoughts on potential new elementary and middle schools in the Viera-Suntree area and other topics. It was made clear that Mullins’ top priority is student safety. “I would say that we’ve worked even long before the tragedy in South Florida to make safety and security a priority in our school system,” Mullins said. “Our school board prioritized funding for additional SROs long before we knew we were going to receive additional funding from the state. We launched a single point of access, access control initiative to harden our schools years ago. We began a training program for our schools called our school emergency operations plan, helping them become increasingly aware of how they can be prepared in the case of a critical incident.” Beyond that, Mullins also discussed another related priority which he also mentioned when queried on what his biggest priorities would be: student mental health. “We’ve expanded the mental health services we

provide students by adding social workers. We’ve added school psychologists, even instructional assistants to support guidance offices so our guidance counselors can spend more of their time in those face-to-face relationships, conversations with those kids, working with them,” Mullins said.

“Our projections seem to indicate that a middle school is on the horizon.” — Dr. Mark Mullins

Mullins also addressed the issue of whether or not the area would need new elementary and middle schools, adding that, “Our projections years out certainly support the need for additional schools in Viera. We are engaged in those conversations now and trying to plan prudently but also ambitiously so that we’re prepared to meet the needs of the families that are going to come to Viera.” More specifically on a prospective Viera Middle School, Mullins noted that, “Our projections seem to indicate that a middle school is on the horizon.” “The need drives the decision,” Mullins added. “If the need is to provide, build a middle school for our students then that’s what we’ll work toward and move toward doing and ensure that we’re prepared for our students.” One of the bigger challenges of his job, Mullins said, relates to retaining and hiring quality teachers.

“It is not a Brevard, Florida but more of a national reality that there are fewer students coming out of formal education training programs at our universities so certainly recruiting and retaining the highest quality workforce is something that we’re looking at,” Mullins said. He also noted that he had an optimistic viewpoint when it came to relations with the Brevard Federation of Teachers in hopes of doing what’s in the best interest of teachers. “I always believe we can come to the table and start the conversation,” Mullins said. “It’s a complex challenge and seldom is there one answer

Former Hawks come back to the nest as teachers at Viera High BY CARL KOTALA

Viera High School alumnus Alex Breeden had a very special message for students in her economics class when school resumed last month. “I tell my students on the first day that if you have a teacher that went to school here and has chosen to come back, that should really tell you how much we love this school and how great this school is and how much the people here care about you,” she said. Breeden, a 2011 Viera High graduate and softball standout, made school history last year when she not only came back to teach, but took over the softball program and led the Hawks to their first final four. Not only is she back for her second year at Viera, but Breeden has been joined by three more fellow alumni Maggie Davis (2012), Gina Fleites (2012) and James

Aiani (2013). Davis, who also is the new girls basketball coach, is teaching physical science, while Fleites teaches government and world history and Aiani is serving as a technology specialist. “It’s great to be back,” Davis said. “It’s definitely a full circle, especially with basketball. Once a Hawk, always a Hawk. It’s just kind of an example of how Viera shaped us.” After graduating, Breeden played softball at South Alabama while Davis played basketball at Valdosta State. Fleites went to UCF and Aiani graduated from Eastern Florida State College. Viera High principal Mike Alba believes having a number of alumni on the staff can only help increase school spirit. “We have a stronger culture when we have former students who want to come back to

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Viera High School alumni Alex Breeden, left, Maggie Davis, Gina Fleites and James Aiani have returned to work at the school. their former school and give back as either an instructor or coach,” Alba said. “It’s phenomenal. They’re able to have a unique connection with their students with them knowing they were in their shoes not too long ago.” Of course, there will be some things that will take getting used to. Instead of being the kid in the back of the room talking to their friends,

they’re now in the front of the room trying to keep the student’s attention. And then there is seeing their former teachers and trying not to refer to them by their last names as they did when they were students. “I have been so welcomed by all my old teachers,” Davis said. “It’s literally like coming back to your family. There’s just nothing better.” Breeden, who has tried

to take what her favorite teachers did well and incorporate them into her own teaching style, was happy to see more former classmates come back to Viera and could certainly understand what they were going through. “It’s awesome,” she said. “It’s been amazing to be back. It’s been amazing to have other people who were at Viera kind of at the same time I was (back here now). It’s crazy to me how, in just a year, all of the anxieties that I had are gone, and I see it in them, so I’m trying to help them out now. “There’s just so much you have to learn, and so much you’re learning on the fly. It’s hard if you don’t have people who can help you and are a soundboard for you. It’s been good. It’s allowed us to help each other. They’re helping me with things I didn’t know.” VV

Karate weekend honors memory of beloved Nagamine BY CHRIS BONANNO

Karate enthusiasts from around the country and even as far away as Canada gathered on Aug. 10 and 11 at the seventh annual Soke Nagamine Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate Memorial Weekend. The event was held at Cocoa Beach Karate, located at Cocoa Beach Health & Fitness. The event is held each year around the same time to honor the memory of Soke Takayoshi Nagamine, who was the head of the World Matsubyashi-Ryu Karate-Do Association and son of the founder of the discipline for which the organization is named after. Nagamine visited Cocoa Beach in July 2011 and was slated to do so again in 2012. However, he passed away at the age of 66 in April of that year before he was able to return. The event is held each year on a date near or on his Aug. 12 birthday. “Saddened by his early passing, we decided to hold this event in his honor since

we were already set up, said Sensei Des Chaskelson of Cocoa Beach Karate of the inaugural event in 2012. “It’s open to all styles and in the

spirit of sharing karate and fellowship, we have this every year. As part of the gathering, preliminary karate workouts

were held on Friday before a main workout on Saturday. At that point, each participant had an opportunity to perform kata, or forms of karate, by group and dojo, giving everyone an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a welcoming environment. Among the 50 or so participating was a contingent from Suntree Martial Arts. “I love the tradition of it, said Suntree Martial Arts owner/operator Sensei Morgan Frechette. “Modern-day karate, it’s a lot of times just a lot of training and looking at the competitive side maybe and the instant gratification or earning my next belt. And, you know, that’s not what

karate was actually for. So, coming together to embrace the tradition of Sensei Nagamine's birthday is very special. Suntree Martial Arts Sensei John Currie Jr. also practiced kata, or forms of karate, along with his daughter, Melania. “Most of my favorite parts of the event (are) getting together with the fellow black belts with Matsubayashi style. “It’s actually great, enjoying that. Currie Jr. also noted that he enjoyed meeting others who traveled to Cocoa Beach for the event. “These guys are very honorable and respectful. These guys know what they’re talking about. They have a lot of technique and a lot of knowledge. VV

Rockledge welcomes new fire engine in unique ceremony BY CHRIS BONANNO

The Rockledge Fire Department has a new stateof-the-art fire engine in use as Engine No. 37 was officially put into operation at a ceremony Aug. 11 at the M.W. “Bill” Weinberg Fire Station

off Murrell Road in Rockledge. “We need this type of equipment in order to answer the call consistently and to not be in fear that our apparatus has aged and (is) outdated and mechanically unsound. So, the city providing us with

this, this is stewardship of the tax monies that we’re afforded and it’s just an amazing, amazing piece of equipment,” said Jim Wilson, deputy chief of the Rockledge Fire Department. As part of the event, a tradition for the introduction and

Is it true that Varicose Veins are a sign of a medical issue? VIERA VOICE Chris Bonanno

Yes. Please do not ignore signs of leg varicose veins. If you notice bulging veins, you have a significant medical condition. Bulging indicates a chronic medical condition. Constant dilation causes blood to stop blood flow back through the legs, leading to further damage. This includes swelling with tissue damage, legs swelling, aching legs, permanent skin pigmentation changes, along with ulcers.

Firefighters and city officials push in the new Engine No. 37 to officially put it into service at a ceremony Aug. 11. retirement of fire engines was conducted for what is believed to be the first time in the city’s history, Wilson said. After remarks were made by officials at the event, including Rockledge Chief of Police Joseph LaSata, Rockledge Mayor Thomas J. Price and Wilson, the new fire engine was blessed by Shaun Ferguson, the city chaplain. Following that, two RFD firefighters used a hose to spray water from the retiring fire engine onto the new one. From there, firefighters and their families took towels and dried the fire engine off. Finally, firefighters and some officials helped push the engine into the station, officially marking the engine’s activation. “When fire departments get a brand new apparatus, like this beautiful engine here, it’s tradition to go ahead to push it into its bay in order to put it into service. So, that’s what we’re doing today, bringing her into service in the way it’s supposed to be done,

honoring the tradition of the past while bringing in the future of this department,” Wilson said. The engine was the first new engine purchased by the city since 2013, according to RFD Battalion Chief S.M. Deatherage. “It’s basically just larger than the other one we had,” Deatherage said. “It’s got more storage room. The ladders are in such a way that makes it much easier for the crews to access and (it has) a lot more compartment space.” “It’s state of the art, it holds 750 gallons. It pumps 1,500 gallons per minute. Basically it’s computerized and it has every safety feature you could possibly imagine,” Wilson said of the engine, which cost more than $400,000. “Most importantly, it was (planned) out and designed by a committee of our actual fire personnel who will have to put it to use.” The old No. 37 engine will be used as a reserve engine, LaSata added. Code Ninja teaches children computer code in unique ways BY WENDY SCHEURING

VIERA VOICE Jill Blue

Code Sensei instructors Bryan Polk, top left, and Samuel Gonzales help Lauren Soper code a drone path.

Laurie Whittaker has the heart of an educator. For the past 19 years, she has worked as a kindergarten teacher’s assistant at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy’s Lower School in Melbourne. And, she also has an entrepreneurial spirit. Whittaker and her husband Jim, who live in Indian Harbour Beach, had been searching for a franchise for more than four years. When they flew to Texas to tour the first Code Ninja that opened, they knew it was the one. “My husband thought it was a hobby of mine and just humored me,” Whittaker said. “He never thought I would find one that I liked. Then, Code Ninjas popped up, and two weeks later, we bought it.” Code Ninja teaches children how to computer code through an individualized, learn-atyour-own-pace program. It’s based upon a martial arts theme where students acquire belts under the direction of a guide, or sensei. The 2,500-square foot facility has a classroom called the dojo, which Whittaker describes as a fishbowl. The classroom is filled with desks, chairs, a whiteboard and plenty of laptop computers. Parents can watch their children learn how to code through the glass. The year-round dropoff program for students is flexible. Students can spend two hours per week working through the program —

anytime between the hours of 3 and 7 p.m. daily. Students begin at the white belt level and then work through the nine levels to earn a black belt. Reaching the final level can take several years. The first four belts — white, yellow, orange and green — teach the basics of JavaScript. At the blue and purple belt levels, they use the robot studio to learn how to build. The brown and red belt levels teach them how to add 3D objects. “When they get to black belt, they would have learned JavaScript and all the tools they need to create a video game or an app,” Whittaker said. The purpose of the program is to teach children learning skills and how to persevere. “Not everyone is going to be a coder, and that’s OK,” Whittaker said. “They learn that there is a solution to every problem. You just have to find it.” Code Ninja also offers coding camps, coding-themed birthday parties and a parents’ night out. “I love everything about Code Ninjas,” Whittaker said. “I enjoy teaching children and working with children. I love all this STEM stuff. We’re having a blast!” Code Ninja is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is located at 1950 Viera Blvd., Suite 112, next to Richard’s Paints. For information, call 321-6224358 or go to codeninjas.com. VV

First Friday events draw praise from local businesses The First Friday food truck and farmers market events, held on the first Friday of each month at Viera Regional Park and jointly produced between Brevard County South Area Parks and Recreation and Viera Park Market, give locals an opportunity to unwind and socialize in a festive atmosphere. But for some local businesses, the event is extremely important in that it represents one of, if not their biggest opportunities monthly, to sell their products. Take for example the case of Viera residents Susan and Frank Fisherman, who own Papa Pasquale Ravioli and Pasta Company, a company that also sells other Italian products such as eggplant rollatini, chicken parmigiana and fried Sicilian artichokes. The duo started their business, which Susan Fisherman said sells products that are manufactured in Brooklyn from old family recipes, last August and sells only at farmers markets. That makes events like First Friday a vital part of the success of the business. “We do a farmers market here and then some other

vieravoice.com

areas in Florida and we hope to get into some local stores soon,” Susie Fisherman said. “The market is a wonderful opportunity to expose our product and our brand, as well as the other vendors here and we’re hoping to see the market grow.” Fisherman added that combining the food trucks and farmers market events seems to help their business. “The food trucks events always bring out a lot more people so we love doing them,” she said. Also at the event was Deedra Earl, who represented Grant-Valkaria-based Hidden Palms Farm, which includes a small dairy that produces raw milk and also acts as a distributor for Capra Gia cheese in Georgia. She said the business already was seeing benefits from participating in the farmers market despite it being just the first time that they had set up at the farmers market. “We have our cheeses in a couple local restaurants and a couple local stores. (We are) very excited about how supportive people in Brevard

Art Gallery of Viera didn't go far to find new home BY JULIE STURGEON

Some of Brevard County's most enchanting fine art can be found at the Art Gallery of Viera. Luckily for Viera residents, the Art Gallery of Viera is relocating within the Avenues, just a few spaces away from its former location. Now housed within the Decorativa space, the art gallery will continue to have monthly openings, classes and the ever-stunning art that adorns its walls. Susan Kennicott, marketing director, talked excitedly about the continuation of the Art Gallery of Viera’s impact on the community. “Art Gallery of Viera is owned and run by fine artists,” Kennicott said. “We are a group of Brevard County professional artists. We are fortunate that many of our artists have won multiple awards.” Kennicott, who moved to Viera from the Midwest, is an artist, as are all members of the board of directors. Kennicott’s art reflects her rural Midwest upbringing and love of nature. Whether you are looking for local art for your home or a unique gift for someone special, the Art Gallery of Viera always has a fresh painting, sculpture or photograph on sale.

Prizes were given away at the Art Gallery of Viera's final art show at its old location. The gallery’s diverse collection includes watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastels, photography, pottery and woodwork. Visitors will even find artsy gift items such as scarves, pillows and jewelry. “We have complimentary appetizers, beer, wine and soda at all of our openings,” Kennicott said. “It is a chance to meet the artists, see their work, and we like to have a raffle give away by an artist each month.” Openings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month. The gallery's board of

directors are: Helen Wheatley, creative director; Jeanette Drake, financial director; Laura Kucharyson, website director; and Kennicott, marketing director. At the gallery, visitors can enjoy Drake’s watercolor paintings, Kucharyson’s seascapes and Wheatley’s mixed media art. Of course, each artist in the group has a wide range of artistic talent, which is why meeting them and visiting the gallery is the best way to appreciate their work. Decorativa, the space the Art Gallery of Viera shares at its

new location, is a home design center offering space planning,

color consultations and other home-related services. For aspiring young artists as well as adults, the Art Gallery of Viera offers art classes and workshops. The Art Gallery of Viera will have a grand opening in October. A soft opening is in the works this month. Check out artgalleryofviera. com for updates on openings. VV

Yoga studio will offer Salt Yoga classes, unique Halotherapy, Infrared Therapy BY ERNEST ARICO

Ionic Day, a unique yoga studio offering Salt Yoga classes, Halotherapy and Infrared Therapy, is opening in the Suntree/Viera area this month. The studio will be located inside the Suntree Business Center at 3270 Suntree Blvd., Building A, Unit 112. Studio owner Ashlee Merchant has been practicing yoga since 2010. “I started taking yoga classes when I lived in California as a way to exercise and relieve stress,” she said. “I wanted to start a business that offers healing and stress relief services that are incorporated into yoga.” Merchant said the grand opening is scheduled for Sept. 12. The studio will be open Monday through Friday. Studio hours will be determined after the grand opening. Prizes, giveaways, raffles and short therapy sessions will be available to interested visitors during the grand opening. Merchant said preliminary

Veterans Memorial Center plans special 9/11 event BY ERNEST ARICO

On Sept. 11, 2001 — 17 years ago — the United States was attacked by terrorists. The nation grieved the loss of those who died in New York City, in Washington, D.C. and in a field in rural Pennsylvania. In 2019, there will be very few high school seniors in the U.S. who were alive when our country was attacked on that fateful day. Next month, in October, will mark the 17th year since U.S. forces took our fight to the planning and staging bases in Afghanistan. While not formally declared, the fight in Afghanistan already is the longest war in American history, and more than 1.3 million members of our Armed Forces have served there in the battle against terrorism. For these reasons and many more, the Brevard

vieravoice.com

Veterans Memorial Center, in partnership with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and other first responders, plans a unique ceremony on Patriot Day. “When planning for the ceremony began in May, the VMC leadership wanted to be mindful of other such ceremonies held in Viera and elsewhere in Brevard, so they decided to host theirs in the afternoon that day, after school was out to encourage young people to attend and because other events are held in the morning or evening,” said Donn Weaver, chairman of the Brevard Veterans Council and VMC vice president and special projects coordinator. “It is a tradition the center hopes will continue each year. The VMC event has a major theme beyond what most such ceremonies feature.”

Investigation continues about disturbing animal deaths in Florida’s waters Sitting at my daughter’s swim practice, her coach compared humans to dolphins — we are not built to live in water and dolphins are not built to live on land. That made me think about the latest dolphin mortality and the state of our waters. According to the Tampa Bay Times, “the dolphin death toll there (on Sarasota County’s beaches) this past month (August) increased to 11 so far.” The cause is unclear but “the Red Tide algae bloom that has lingered along the Gulf Coast since November and has recently killed thousands of baitfish and sportfish, and is suspected of killing sea turtles, manatees and even a whale shark” is a likely cause. Investigators from Mote Marine Laboratory have been working on necropsies of the carcasses of dead bottlenose dolphins recovered with the help of the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. Mote’s stranding investigations program manager Gretchen Lovewell told Fox 13 that “seeing stomachs full of partiallydigested fresh fish and not much else, is one of our first indications this (death toll) is likely (due to) red tide.” Red tide, a higher-thannormal concentration of a microscopic alga, is nothing new to Florida's Gulf Coast. Their occurrence has been documented since the 1840s in that area, according to the FWC. However, as National Geographic reports, this year’s is the region’s worst in more than a decade. It “stretches around 100 miles along the coast and miles offshore, often pushed into concentrated patches by winds and currents.” It is so bad that many are wondering if humans have anything to do with it. “There are no easy answers, scientists say, and many

researchers are split on the culprits.” While some think other factors like “salinity, temperatures, light saturation, chemistry and currents” play a key role in the longlasting red tides. Many believe that the “algae feeds on the nutrient-rich agricultural runoff from land, causing it to stick around for longer and rage more intensely.” Runoffs seem to be a common denominator regarding water issues and also the reason inland waters turned slimy green in Florida. “Runoff from cattle farms and residential developments that lie north of the state's largest freshwater body, Lake Okeechobee, carries in nutrients,” feeding the bloom of green cyanobacteria. Between those blooms and the news about chemicals being “found at high levels in the groundwater at Patrick Air Force Base and at much lower levels in groundwater and wastewater in the Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach areas,” according to Florida Today, it makes me wonder what we are doing to our waters and what the future looks like for us and our precious wildlife. To better understand our water system and maybe get a different perspective on the issues involving our waters, Recycle Brevard scheduled a couple of field trips — on Sept. 28 to the Cocoa drinking water plant and on Oct. 26 to the Sykes Creek wastewater treatment plant. Weaver said the VMC also will honor the service and sacrifice of those from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and all volunteers who took the fight beginning that October. “They have been fighting in dozens of countries around the world since then,” Weaver said. “Their actions have no doubt prevented more attacks on American soil. More than twice as many Americans have died in direct combat operations since that day than perished at the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pa. Thousands more have also fallen as the result of military service or been severely wounded during their deployments.” The Patriot Day ceremony will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Veterans Memorial Center behind the Merritt Square Mall. The ceremony will begin at the 9/11 Monument in the plaza. Drinks and refreshments will follow in Gray Hall. Special guest speakers

include Cape Canaveral Port Commission chairman and retired U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Wayne Justice, who was at the Pentagon the day of the attack, and Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey. Other speakers will include those who were in New York City or at the Pentagon that day in 2001, as well as those who served and lost friends, relatives and family members in the battlefields of Afghanistan. Robert W. Doyle, VMC operations and security director, said the center plans on continuing this ceremony in years to come. “People were concerned that there was no event,” he said. “We are going to make sure we never forget in Brevard County and Central Florida. We want people to remember those first responders and military heroes whose lives changed and whose sacrifices began that day.” The event is co-sponsored by the VMC and the Brevard County Sheriff Office. Memory care facility uses prize money for fun items

BY MIKE GAFFEY

Thanks to Princess Poppy, Autumn House has a popcorn maker. And a bubble machine and star projector, too. Last October, the memory care facility at 7999 Spyglass Hill Road in Viera won the $500 grand prize for best scarecrow during the sixth annual Scarecrow

Stroll and Harvest Festival at the Avenue Viera. About 25 residents created a 7-foot likeness of Princess Poppy from the 2016 animated film “Trolls.” Autumn House used the Judge’s Choice prize money to purchase a popcorn machine for the facility, a bubble machine for residents who visit an outdoor garden and a solar

projector that displays starry images on the ceiling of a sensory room. “We utilize the popcorn machine during our activities or our games such as bowling, or especially for movie nights,” said Joey Durie, activities director at Autumn House. “One evening or so out of the month, we host a movie night, and we put up our big screen TV and we just enjoy some popcorn.” Durie said the bubble machine adds to a positive sensory experience for garden visitors. “Residents love to be outside,” he said. “It’s good for them to be outside to get some sun. They sit underneath an awning, and we provide drinks and play with the bubble machine.”

“(The projector) shows an aurora and lights that simulate stars. Our residents love to gaze at the stars.” —Joey Durie In Autumn House’s sensory room, the new projector turns the darkened room’s ceiling into a soothing haven for senior stargazers, who sit in comfortable chairs and listen to soft music during the presentation. “It shows an aurora and lights that simulate stars,” Durie said of the projector. “Our residents love to gaze at the stars.”

The idea for a Princess Poppy scarecrow came from a staffer’s child, an Autumn House official told Senior Life in October. In the movie “Trolls,” Poppy was known for creating scrapbooks to preserve memories, and Autumn House strives to create pleasant memories for its residents, the official said. This year's Scarecrow Stroll will be held from Oct. 3 to 17. During that time, local businesses will display their handcrafted crows as voters visit with their ballot. The Harvest Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 20 at The Avenue Viera. For more about Autumn House, call 321-242-1006 or go to autumnhouseflorida. com. VV

The benefits of breathing this air include: Reducing stress and headaches; increased energy; improved sleep patterns; enhanced immunities; and improved circulation. Merchant also explained that the studio will be decorated in hundreds of pounds of Himalayan salt.

There will be a salt wall, which will be lighted with the ambiance of the amber colored salt. Merchant said the benefits of the Himalayan salt include: Improving mood and concentration; relieving fatigue and stress; and promoting relaxation. Finally, the studio will have a sauna for Infrared Therapy with sessions lasting 20 minutes. “This isn’t a regular sauna, as it does not get to the extreme temperatures of the typical sauna. Nor does it have a red light,” Merchant

said. “The heat generated by the infrared panels actually heats a person from the inside. It is very beneficial and detoxifying.” The benefits of the infrared sauna include: Detoxifying; burning calories; anti-aging properties; athletic recovery and pain relief; immune system boost; improving circulation; and de-stressing and improving mood. SUNTREENews

Like a good neighbor, the Neighbors of Suntree are there to help

BY MARIA SONNENBERG

If only we could all have neighbors like the Neighbors of Suntree (NOS), a women’s civic group that welcomes newcomers to the area while simultaneously financially supporting a plethora of charities. You don’t have to live in Suntree to join the membership, which now numbers 300. An annual fee of $25 per household and a desire to connect with the community are all the requirements. The group began with a handful of women in 1984 with the purpose of raising funds for nonprofit groups. From the proceeds such as the bazillion of donated gift baskets that are auctioned off at the club’s holiday extravaganza, memberships and a major fashion show, the Neighbors of Suntree have donated more than $28,000 to groups that include Candlelighters of Brevard, Serene Harbor, Women’s Center, Joe’s Club, the Viera High School band, Brevard Zoo, Florida Wildlife Hospital and Harbor City Ambulance, among many, many others. This year’s recipients of the Neighbors’ largesse will be the Children’s Hunger Project, Paws for Veterans, the Space Coast Symphony and Promise in Brevard. In recent years, the annual awards average $2,000 per charity. It’s not all just raising funds. There also is fun. “In addition to being a charitable organization, it’s a social club that encourages

are about supporting local businesses, small businesses and just helping the economy here for small American farms and farmers,” Earl said. “We were thrilled. We packed out and we’ve sold out of almost every flavor that we have here at this market. It’s been our best market so far and we’re like super excited.” Fisherman and Earl’s businesses were just two of the roughly 30 on hand at the Aug. 3 joint event. The event, according to Chris Vawter, recreation leader with Brevard County Parks and Recreations South Area Operations, drew more than 1,200 people. The evening’s weather was about as pleasant as it can be in early August in Brevard County. “Anything we can do to help out — not only the farmers market but also the food trucks themselves. September will be a big month for the members, since it brings the club’s annual Welcome Coffee, a critical event that draws new members. The bigger the membership, the more money it can raise for the various charities. That is what good neighbors do.
