Welcome To Alleghany County & Sparta Welcome to the Sparta Magazine, a visitor and business guide to our community. Sparta is located in Alleghany County, the eastern-most county in the North Carolina mountains and most convenient to the Piedmont and the urban centers of Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Charlotte and Raleigh.

Alleghany is shaped by the land. For centuries the New River and its main tributary, the Little River, carved and nurtured valleys and fields while forming the Peach Bottom Mountains that divide the center of the county and are home to area’s highest peaks, and the Crest of the Blue Ridge — the Eastern Continental Divide — which forms the southern and eastern borders of the county and is home to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The result is a panoply of striking vistas and lush valleys and rivers teaming with aquatic life. This is agricultural country. Grazing cattle and Christmas tress line the country highways and byways that wind between the mountainsides.

The area is home to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the nation’s most visited National Park, Stone Mountain State Park with its namesake granite dome, and to New River State Park that is located on this National Wild and Scenic River. They combine to provide an unmatched variety of outdoor adventure.

Sparta is at its center, a bustling small town that is the center of local trade and commerce and home to a friendly and welcoming community.

Events Almost anytime is a good time to visit Alleghany County and Sparta and the surrounding area.

Summer and fall, the New River beckons sportsmen as well as families canoeing downstream.

Opportunities for outdoor adventure abound along the Blue Ridge Parkway and at New River and Stone Mountain State Parks. During the year, festivals and celebrations offer added excitement. Alleghany C. A. R. E. S. Inc. Christians Associated for the Relief and Emergency Services The Alleghany Chamber of Commerce is featuring a non-profit organization in the Sparta Magazine this year, one that has been instrumental in helping fulfill the needs of many Alleghany County residents in times of crisis, as well as providing ongoing aid for the community. In fact, Alleghany C.A.R.E.S. Inc. (Christians Associated for the Relief and Emergency Services) has grown over the years into the largest charitable organization in Alleghany County. However, the organization very humbly began its operations as a community service non-profit organization in May of 1992. The five people who met could never have envisioned the facilities and programs of the organization as it is in 2017—25 years later.

Cora Neville. David and Pattie Linton, Bob Richardson and Rev. Russell Mabe met at the office of Edmund Adams to begin the journey of helping residents of Alleghany with goods and emergency needs. After several location moves, land was obtained on Womble Street.

The first building was completed in 1994. The current thrift store was built in 2000 and in 2015 the receiving/processing building was completed.

Our Mission: • Collect and process items donated, • Operate a thrift store for purchases at low cost, • Give assistance without charge in times of crisis, • Contribute monetarily to needs in the community.

The proceeds from the Thrift Store provide the financial means to fund the many programs CARES provides for the community. Without the donations, volunteers to ready the items, and the customers purchasing the items, the residents of Alleghany would not have access to the programs CARES offers.

Some of the programs benefiting Alleghany County residents include: Purchasing shoes twice a year for elementary students identified by the teachers in the three schools (284 pairs last year); Scholarships for furthering the education of teens and adults (26) last year; Medication Assistance Program providing free access to prescriptions of those that qualify; and an Adult Dental program providing limited services to those that meet the financial guidelines. Our latest program provides gasoline vouchers to those in active cancer treatment. The thrift store is always open to those in crisis to freely receive items from the store that would meet their needs.

In 2005 the Alleghany County Ministerium Emergency Relief Fund moved to the CARES office. The CARES Executive Director could now assist those in need at one place for assistance without having to go to several places to receive help and repeat their need so many times. So a person could come to one place and get assistance from the Emergency Relief fund on an electrical cut off, sign up for the CARES Medication Assistance Program or even obtain clothing should the need arise.

In 2008, Alleghany CARES gave land and finances to help build the current Solid Rock Food Closet adjacent to the CARES buildings. This would allow the client to also obtain needed food all from the same parking lot. In 2016, each month 350 families were assisted—representing 900 people being served with nutritious meals. The Food Closet also provides Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday meal ingredients in addition to the monthly foods. Even the children in school are taken care of with the Backpack Program through the school year and into the summer. The backpacks are filled with foods children can fix for themselves for the weekend.

The Ministerium also has a Solid Rock Building ministry that began assisting with wheelchair ramps and small house repair. The ministry developed into the “In As Much United” which involves a one-day blitz of our community reaching out to help our neighbors. The last project of the Building ministry was a house on Maple Street and now a duplex on the same property that will house the Alleghany Pregnancy Center upon completion.

Each person making a donation, volunteering or making a purchase are partners of this organization and a part of the lives of those benefiting from the many programs of Alleghany CARES now and in the future.
