Though it may be hard to find time for yourself while at GHS, remember that your mental health is so much more important than an A, and it is a necessity to practice self-love. This part of your life is so meaningless in the long run, and it's really not worth the mind-breaking stress to get perfect grades. Carve time out of everyday to breathe, eat, maybe do some yoga, and just relax. It's not a big deal to miss a couple assignments or do poorly on a test if it means you are content within yourself. Different paths to graduation
BY KENNEDY OGDEN This school year a handful of students have taken different paths to graduation than the typical four-year experience. Some of these students skipped a grade or finished their senior year early, while others went to our branch school, C-TEC.
Students learning paths are different all across the board. They can be different in class types and even location. With remote learning, students are learning at different paces and in different places.
For senior Brighton Gillispie, her decision was based on family.
“My parents found a house in South Carolina that they wanted to move to and if they waited until I graduated in May then the house would be gone. So I had the option of graduating early or continuing school in South Carolina” said Gillispie.
Gillispie was done with classes this December and has been living with her family in South Carolina. She plans to attend Clemson University starting in the summer. She is set to graduate AT end of May.
For other students like Sierra Sarver, a similar situation happened. Sarver was set to graduate in 2022, but over the last year she realized she was able to graduate early.
“I realized over the summer that I just felt ready to move to the next part of life, post-high school,” Junior Sierra Sarver said. “And given that I had all the requirements it seemed to work out really well”
Other paths to graduation provide more opportunities to students not confined to school hours.
“For some students, graduating early gives them an opportunity to pursue other interests such as a job, internship, service project, travel, etc.,” school counselor Mrs. Cosgrove said.
Sarver is one of these special cases, this coming year Sarver plans to travel.
“I’m an avid hiker so one idea was to do a national parks tour and create a photo series from my travels,” Sarver said. “I am also hoping to do a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail next April.”
Graduating from high school early, although it’s a dream, is not the right path for everyone. Graduating early can mean taking extra classes and requires a lot of hard work and dedication. For student Lanie Hilaman this was not an option, she dedicated herself to her passion for nursing.
Hilaman began her journey at C-TEC her junior year. C-TEC is a career and technology-centered school.
“Being in this program has allowed me to test the waters of being a nurse before blindly applying as a nursing major in college,” Hillman said.
Although Hilaman is not graduating early like the rest, she is getting ahead in another way. Hilaman will be graduating as a certified State Tested Nurses Aide, and EKG technician, phlebotomist, and pharmacy technician.
After having her nursing class split to accommodate social distancing guidelines, students could have more oneon-one time with their instructor and classmates.
“C-TEC has fortified my passion to work in the healthcare field,” Hillaman said.
Tradition is not always key and this has been proven this year. These students, and others, have taken the path less traveled and succeeded. There are a multitude of ways to get to graduation.
Hillaman will be attending Xavier University in a nursing class of 200 students.

Taking the path less traveled

Art by Kennedy Ogden
BY KAMRYN KIRKHAM When most of our parents were younger, college seemed like the only option to achieve success, and maybe that was the case back then, but many things have changed since then. Now we have advanced technology and more options available to this new generation.
Yet people are still pressuring us that college is the only option to be stable and successful in life. When the reality is that college is not for everyone, and some people may be better off taking different routes then college.
GAP YEAR
One option for after high school that has become more prevalent and known through more recent years is taking a gap year. Many students after graduating high school have no clue what field they want to go into, so taking a gap year can be perfect for that.
Sophie Wakeling, a senior this year at Granville, is planning on taking a gap year.
“After this past year I was just so burnt out and knew I wouldn’t succeed in college. I also don’t know exactly what I want to go for and I don’t want to waste my time and money on something and then switch majors 3 times,” Wakeling said.
Graduates can use this year to travel and live out there young adulthood before they have to work hard in college. Taking a gap year also has been known to help people find themselves and learn about what they are passionate about before having to make life changing decisions in college.
STUDY ABROAD
Other students have decided to go to college right away but have taken an alternative approach by studying abroad for a semester. Granville senior Liz Fruechtnicht is one of these students. She decided to do a semester at sea.
“It will give me a chance to experience other parts of the world and other cultures, it will teach me independence, and because I will have to be part of the crew on the boat, I will have a better work ethic,” Fruechnicht said.
Studying abroad can be a good opportunity for people who are looking to find themselves while getting a unique life experience.
MILITARY
Another route that seniors have decided to take is going into the Air Force, Army, or Navy. Both men and women can go into this career right after high school or when they reach the age of 18. One senior going into the Air Force is Ivy Thomas.
“I get the privilege to serve my country in the air national guard as a photojournalist, as well as going to Capital University to become a nurse,” Thomas said.
While some people go into the military full time, some people like Ivy Thomas are able to make both the military and college work simultaneously.
TECH SCHOOL
One senior going into tech school after graduating high school is Dylan Board. Tech school can last as long as 4 years like a traditional college, but the difference is that tech school is often more exclusive to the certain field people plan to go into. Board is planning on going to C-TEC to study technology this fall.
“I wish I could go to a normal four-year college, but C-TEC is way cheaper, so I would save a lot of money going there,” Board said.
Dylan is not very excited for tech school, but nevertheless it is still a great option for saving money, but doesn’t normally provide the social aspects that traditional college offers.
