Hair

Hair should be clean, neat and tidy. Hairstyles should be conservative and not cause undue comment due to its extreme nature. A small amount of styling product may be worn to control hair and not draw attention to it.

Spiky and/or shiny looking hair is not permitted and students who have frosted tips, two tones or hair dye in a fashion colour will be sent home and will not be permitted to return until the hair has been restored to its natural colour or style. At times, the student may be required to wear a hat until the issue is rectified.

Female Students

Female students must keep their hair off their faces and shoulders, regardless of the length of their hair. Hair must be completely and securely tied back, including long fringes and strips of hair. All hair accessories must be discreet and may only include the School colours. Hair elastics are not to be worn on the wrist.

Male Students

Male students must have hair that is evenly cut short. There should not be extreme variations in length. It should not extend below the eyebrows or touch the shirt collar.

Boys must be clean-shaven at all times and their sideburns must remain short.

Hairstyles not permitted include:

• Undercuts

• Steps

• Razored part lines

• Flat tops

• Spiked hair

• Rats-tails

• Mullets

Hair and Makeup

Hair Styles

Girls’ hair is to be neat, clean, of ONE natural colour, clear of the face and tied up or back if long enough to touch the collar. This is a WHS requirement.

The length and style of hair requires students’ hair to be neat, tidy, off the face, restrained from contact with other students and not expressing the excesses of current fashion. Styles that are NOT permitted, and would constitute an excess include:

• Sculpting and shaving - hair should not be cut or sculpted with hard lines, or completely shaved (unless medically necessary)

• Hair fades that are cut shorter than a Number 0 - fades must be blended

• Hair extending below the eyebrow and covering the eyes when unrestrained

• Hair extending below the top of the collar line - must be restrained

• Hair dyed unnatural colours. Hair is to look natural. Final adjudication on what may constitute ‘excesses of current fashion’ is determined by the Principal or their delegate.

Hair Accessories

Hair accessories for students, to aid in keeping hair off the face.

Girls’ hair restraints should not be overly conspicuous and must be dark blue, yellow or School plaid in colour (7 to Year 10 girls) and either blue or white (Year 11 and 12 girls). Black, dark brown or school colour hair elastics are permitted.

Facial Hair

Facial hair is required to be short and neatly trimmed. Students may be sent home where they do not comply.

Makeup

Years 7-12 clear sunscreen, clear lip balm and clear nail polish are acceptable. Students are permitted to wear a very light covering of makeup that is natural in colour and texture. It should not be overtly noticeable. Eye or lip liner, mascara, false lashes or extensions are not permitted. Acrylic/French tip nails are not permitted due to WHS issues.

Girls may wear a watch; one simple, plain ring; one pair of small gold or silver earrings (studs or sleepers only), one in each ear lobe (other piercings, regardless of location, are not permitted).

Boys may wear a watch, but are not permitted to wear any other jewellery or have any piercings.

Variations and Infringements

Variations Due to Unforeseen Circumstances

Should an unforeseen circumstance arise where a student is not able to present at school in the correct school uniform, a note MUST be presented with a reasonable explanation. Whilst grace will be extended to students in extenuating circumstances, a record of all variations will be kept to monitor and avoid frequent non-compliance.

Uniform Infringements - Senior School

If a student is out of uniform, the tutor will issue a Uniform Pass. ALL students out of uniform will be issued with a Uniform Pass and will return to class. Students cannot return to class without a Uniform Pass. If the student has a note from a parent/caregiver explaining their uniform, no further action will be taken.

If the student does not have a note from a parent/caregiver explaining their uniform, this will be recorded in the school database.

The relevant Tutor/HOH/Dean of Students will monitor the uniform over the year.

At the first infringement within a term, the student will incur a warning and a phone call to their parent/caregiver.

At the second infringement within a term, the student will report to the HOH at lunch for a Wellbeing Interview

(20 minutes involving a more in-depth conversation discussing BMGS Policy and Procedures regarding their uniform, and time off the playground). A phone call will be made to their parent/ caregiver.

At the third infringement within a term, the student will report to the relevant Dean of Students at lunch for a Wellbeing Interview (20 minutes involving a more in-depth conversation regarding their uniform, and time off the playground). A phone call will be made to their parent/caregiver.

At the fourth infringement within a term, the student will be issued an in-school suspension, where the student will be removed from the playground until the matter is corrected. This will be followed up by an after-school detention with the HOSS. If a student is aware that they will be out of uniform on a given day, and they have a note from a parent/caregiver, they are able to report to the Tutor and receive a Uniform Pass before school starts. Continued non-compliance will be regarded as sufficient reason for termination of a student’s enrolment.
