Powerscreen Drives New Quarry Operation

When the Heritage Quarry Group (North) Limited decided to open its very first limestone quarry in early 2025, its highly experienced management team had no hesitation in investing in a brand new fleet of Powerscreen equipment from Blue Machinery.

The Skillington Quarry site, located near Grantham in Lincolnshire, had been a dormant greenfield location despite holding planning permission since the 1960s.

When the newly formed Heritage Quarry Group acquired the land, they immediately began transforming it into a modern, efficient limestone quarry, one that marks the beginning of a wider strategic plan to open multiple new sites across the region over the next several years.

Company Director Steve Johnson has more than two decades of experience in the industry and more recently he was part of the management team at the Johnston Quarry Group, established by Nicolas Johnston and which operated eight quarries and two separate processing sites located across the South West, Oxfordshire and Lincolnshire, before it was acquired by the SigmaRoc in 2022.

Steve’s knowledge of Powerscreen’s impressive and innovative range of equipment stretches over 20 years, so it was natural that he would continue to build on that successful relationship during which he has also come to know and appreciate the service and support provided

by Blue Machinery, who have been the UK dealer for Powerscreen for more than 30 years.

We met up with Steve to see how the new package of Powerscreen equipment, part of a £2m plus investment by the Heritage Quarry Group (North) Limited, was performing at the new quarry. It includes the very first next generation 1300X Maxtrak sold in the UK. This high throughput portable cone crushing plant, which features the advanced Terex TC1300X cone crusher, is proving to be exceptional in producing high-quality sub-base and aggregate materials.

It is working at the Skillington Quarry as part of a Powerscreen crushing and screening train which includes a new Premiertrak 600 jaw crusher, two Chieftain 2200 mobile screens and a Warrior 2100 screen.

Once the extracted rock is fed into the primary 600 jaw crusher, the crushed material is then in turn fed into the 1300X Maxtrak cone for further processing before it is finally screened and separated into different size categories and grades.

“We are very impressed with this new package of equipment, as we knew we would be because of our longstanding relationship with Blue Machinery and the Powerscreen brand,” says Steve Johnson. “It is not running yet at its full capacity as we are still in the process of developing the quarry, but we know the equipment will be up to the task.

Steve recalls a time when he acquired his first Powerscreen, a Warrior 2100, from Pat Mallon who sadly passed away in 2021. Described as a true gentleman, and lifelong legend at Powerscreen, Pat played a vital role in many product launches and engineering projects over the years during his time with the company. He was inducted into Powersceen’s Hall of Fame which was launched at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 to recognise exceptional individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the development and success of the Powerscreen brand.

“I built up a real friendship with Pat over so many years, so it felt only right that with Blue’s help, we should dedicate our new Powerscreen fleet to his memory,” says Steve. “Pat had helped me on every site I’ve ever operated. This is the first one without him, so we knew we had to find a way to keep him here with us.”

"What we like about Powerscreen is its versatility and value for money. The equipment can be easily modified to suit our needs, and from past experience we know it holds an excellent residual value. We know that when the time comes to sell on and reinvest, we will get a good price for the equipment which is always in demand throughout the world.”

The quarry, from which up to 120,000 tonnes of limestone could be extracted per annum, is offering a comprehensive range of limestone products, from pipe bedding and drainage stones to base material and Type 1 sub-base material.

“We are very versatile and can meet virtually any requirements of our customers,” says Steve, who adds that the quarry is within easy reach of the A1 road, and other major road networks, so it is ideally situated to serve customers over a wide area.

It’s a tight run and efficient operation at Skillington Quarry which can’t afford any unnecessary and potentially costly downtime, so reliability of machinery is crucial, and equally important as the new equipment is the support and service provided by Blue Machinery.

Steve says he has been dealing with the team at Blue Machinery, including founder Pat McGeary, for many years and has never been disappointed. He describes Blue’s area sales manager Ian Taylor as his ‘go to’ source if ever there are any issues that need resolving. “He and his team are only ever a phone call away.”

Another Fuchs Lands in the Crow’s Nest

We recently visited Crow Metals, a longestablished leader in scrap metal recycling across East London and Essex. With a legacy dating back to 1943, Crow Metals brings over 80 years of experience, an achievement that has earned the family-run business a strong and trusted reputation within the industry.

Continuing their commitment to investing in high-quality equipment, the company has taken delivery of a new Fuchs MHL 340F scrap handler. This latest addition marks the fifth Fuchs machine in their fleet, working across their three busy yards in Romford, Dagenham, and Rainham.

The Fuchs MHL 340F is engineered specifically for the demands of modern scrap handling. Known for its impressive reach, exceptional fuel efficiency, and robust hydraulic performance, the 340F provides operators with power, precision, and comfort.

The new MHL 340F has now joined operations at the company’s Romford yard, where it works alongside an established Fuchs MHL 331. Their Dagenham site runs a 2003 Fuchs MHL 320, still performing admirably despite its age, further testament to the longevity of Fuchs equipment. Meanwhile, at their Rainham yard, an MHL 335 and another MHL 340 support daily processing activities.

This fleet reflects Crow Metals’ long-term confidence in Fuchs machinery as well as their commitment to operating efficiently across all three locations.

Matt Scott, Sales Director at Blue Southern, commented:

“Thanks to Joe and all the team at Crow Metals for their continued loyalty to Fuchs as a manufacturer and to Blue as a partner for their servicing and spare parts.”

Adding to this, Joe Wakefield, Managing Director at Crow Metals, spoke highly of the ongoing relationship with Blue Machinery:

"We’ve worked with Blue for many years now, and the level of support we receive is second to none. Their team understands our business and keeps our machines running smoothly, which is vital in an industry that never stops. The quality and reliability of the Fuchs machines make them an easy choice for us, and we’re proud to continue growing our fleet with equipment we know we can trust.”

Portland Stone Invests in New Stateof-the-Art Waste Recovery Plant

Portland Stone, as the name suggests, is proudly based on the Isle of Portland in the picturesque county of Dorset. Founded in 1995 by the late John “Butch” Nash, the company has remained a family-run business rooted in the community values instilled by its founder.

Though the business has grown significantly over the years, the commitment to serving the local community remains central to everything Portland Stone does.

Today, the company delivers a comprehensive suite of services across Dorset, supporting everyone from householders to major contractors. Its core offerings include Waste Management & Recycling, as well as Crushed Stone and Landscaping Supplies, services that continue to evolve in response to customer needs and emerging sustainability pressures.

Portland Stone Ltd recently announced a major investment in a new processing plant. Working with Blue Machinery (Southern), it was designed to harness the latest technology to recover even more materials from waste streams. This step reflects the company’s dedication to innovation, improved operational efficiency, and the ongoing reduction of reliance on landfill.

↓ Portland’s new state-ofthe-art plant

Plant Process

Material is fed into an M&J Pre-Shredder, before being conveyed to a Spaleck Combi Screen for primary separation. Oversize material is then transported to a picking station which separates, cardboard & paper, wood and residual waste. Before any Ferrous metals are extracted using an overband magnet.

The plant is targeting the recovery of the following materials: 0-10mm ferrous, 0-10mm fines, 10-65mm ferrous, 11-65mm heavy fraction, mids light fraction, 0/S lights fraction, picked wood, picked cardboard, picked plastics, picked textiles, picked waste, O/S residual/aggregate and O/S ferrous.

“This investment reflects our commitment to innovation and our long-term ambition to lead the way in sustainable waste management across the county.”

comments Danny Nash, Managing Director at Portland Stone.

For the past 12 years, Portland Stone operated a recycling plant which played a key role in improving recycling rates and moving away from previously manual sorting methods. As the business continued to expand, it became clear that a new, more advanced facility would support the next stage of its sustainability journey.

Danny goes on to emphasise how important it was to select the right supplier for this milestone investment.

“After careful consideration, we chose to partner with Blue Machinery (Southern) to supply and support the new plant. We felt the quality of their build and the exceptional level of support made them the right choice to help us take this important step forward."

With this partnership and new technology in place, Portland Stone Ltd is well positioned to continue leading the way in ethical, efficient, and environmentally responsible waste management across Dorset.
