Green Waste calls for Orange Efficiency

Enva, one of the UK’s leading recycling and resource recovery businesses, has recently strengthened its long-standing partnership with Blue Machinery (Scotland) by upgrading its fleet with the latest Doppstadt technology.

The Enva facility in Blantyre has taken delivery of a new Doppstadt AK 565K high-speed shredder, replacing its previous AK 635K model, along with two new Doppstadt SM 620 trommel screens.

The relationship between Enva and Blue Machinery stretches back nearly two decades, with the company adopting Doppstadt equipment as early as the DW 2060 and DW 3060 slow-speed shredders.

Over the years, the operation has progressed through multiple generations of Doppstadt machines and is now on its third AK high-speed shredder and eighth SM trommel, a testament to both the equipment’s performance and the trust built between the two companies. The newly delivered AK 565K was trialled over a two-day demo and performed exceptionally well, leading to the final purchase.

The machine is now operating as part of an integrated processing train on-site, alongside the new trommel screens, efficiently handling green waste for compost production. The feeding excavator has also been upgraded, now equipped with a VTN MD210 grab, also supplied by Blue.

Doppstadt machines are perfectly suited to green waste processing thanks to their robust build, advanced shredding and screening capabilities, and impressive efficiency. Whether dealing with grass, branches, hedge clippings, or organic garden waste, the AK high-speed shredders produce a fine, consistent output ideal for composting. Paired with the SM trommel screens, Enva can now achieve a clean, high-quality end product with even greater throughput.

Iain Cameron, Site Manager at Enva, commented: “We’ve been operating Doppstadt machines for many years now, and all our operators are familiar with them. They’re easy to use, fuel-efficient, and deliver the high throughput we need.”

"We rarely experience issues with the machines, but if we ever do, it’s reassuring to know that Blue Spares in Stirling are only 30 miles away."

Iain went on to add: “The reliability is a big plus for us. We rarely experience issues with the machines, but if we ever do, it’s reassuring to know that Blue Spares in Stirling are only 30 miles away. Their parts support is quick, and the service from the Blue Scotland team has always been excellent.”

Ross Kellett, Regional Sales Manager at Blue Machinery (Scotland), said: “We’re very grateful for Enva’s continued business. They’re a major player in the UK recycling sector and a natural partner for our business. We’re able to provide them with world-leading equipment backed by a strong local support network. The relationship between Enva and our engineering team has grown steadily over the last 20 years, and it’s fantastic to see that trust continue with the latest Doppstadt machines.”

With performance, reliability, and localised support at the heart of their operation, Enva’s continued investment in Doppstadt machinery through Blue Machinery (Scotland) ensures their green waste processing remains both efficient and future-ready.

Keeping up with the Jones’s

Two new DEVELON DX160LC-7 excavators have joined Jones Bros' growing plant fleet, helping the civil engineering contractor tackle challenging terrain during a peat restoration project near Lochgilphead in Argyll, Scotland.

The soft, uneven landscape is no obstacle for Jones Bros, whose expertise spans ecologically sensitive areas, highways, flood defences, marine works, waste management, and renewable energy projects across the UK. The company, founded in the 1950s and now in its third generation of family leadership, operates one of the UK’s largest plant fleets and employs around 500 people.

Supplied by Blue Machinery (Central), these latest excavators are part of a six-machine order. Once completed, the company will own ten Develon excavators. The new machines have been custom-modified with extended length and width to the tracks, enabling superior stability and performance on peat and other soft ground.

“These machines are 1.5 metres longer and half a metre wider than standard, making them ideal for these conditions,” says Tim Dilworth, Sales Manager at Blue Machinery (Central).

Fitted with Miller tilting buckets and Topcon’s new GX90 touchscreen control system (first in the UK), the excavators have quickly won over team on site. “The machines are fuel-efficient and easy to operate” says Foreman Mark Roberts. “The technology really enhances usability. Operators praise the comfortable, spacious cab, low noise and vibration, and effective climate control." Graham White, one of the operators, notes, “The cab provides an excellent working environment.”

The 8-inch DEVELON Smart Touch display offers intuitive monitoring of machine status, while a jog shuttle switch provides precise control. Low-effort joysticks and customisable thumb switches enable smooth, confident operation, and a Fine Swing function ensures safer material handling by reducing sudden movements during swing starts and stops. Four work modes and four power modes allow operators to adjust performance for specific applications while minimising fuel consumption.

“Four work modes and four power modes allow operators to adjust performance for specific applications while minimising fuel consumption.”

The machines also come with Miller’s Powerlatch

Tilt couplers, which deliver up to 180° tilt functionality. This significantly boosts versatility, allowing operators to reach difficult areas and reduce the need to reposition equipment.

“With these Miller tilt buckets, we can build bunds and more without moving the machine,” Roberts adds. “They’re a fantastic addition.” The tilt couplers enhance breakout force and machine stability while maintaining a low-profile design and complying with ISO13031 safety standards.

Both operators and engineers have been impressed by the Topcon GX-90 system, which features a 10.1-inch LCD multi-touch screen, Gorilla Glass durability, and a Linuxbased OS for a smooth user experience. “It’s simple and intuitive,” says operator Graham White.

“I can even use it for surveys, saving time and reducing site visits from engineers.”

According to Topcon UK Distribution Manager Richard McGonagle, the GX-90 is designed for versatility and ease of use, with USB-C connectivity, a magnetic RAM mount, and a protective case for transport and storage.

So successful have these additions been that the remaining DEVELON machines on order for Jones Bros will also be fitted with Topcon GX90 systems and Miller tilt buckets, cementing a strong partnership between cutting-edge technology and on-site practicality.

Fine Screening at Easy Load

Established in 1968, Easy Load Ltd is a family-run waste management company based in Dartford, serving Kent, South East London, and surrounding areas.

They offer a comprehensive range of services, including skip hire, roll-on-off containers, and recycled materials. Committed to environmental sustainability, Easy Load operates a modern Material Recycling Facility aimed at minimising landfill waste. Their fleet is equipped with GPS technology to ensure prompt and efficient service, catering to individual households, schools, government contracts, local builders, and national construction companies.

As part of their commitment to the WRAP initiative (Waste & Resources Action Programme), Easy Load continually seeks to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill. To enhance their recycling efficiency, they recently invested in upgrading their static recycling plant, a move that included working with Blue Machinery (Southern) Ltd to install a brandnew feeder and Spaleck 3D Combi Screen.

Click to watch

The Challenge

Easy Load’s previous recycling system was outdated and inefficient, limiting the company's ability to effectively separate materials. Their old feeder and trommel system struggled to produce high-quality, LOI compliant fines and restricted their capacity to recover valuable materials such as ferrous metals and stone. Recognising the need for an upgrade, they turned to Blue Machinery (Southern) Ltd to implement a more efficient solution.

The Solution

Blue Machinery (Southern) Ltd supplied and installed a state-of-the-art Spaleck 3D Combi Screen, a highperformance screening machine designed to optimise material separation. The system features a 50mm top deck and a 15mm bottom deck, making it ideal for midsize clean-up and material recovery. This advanced machine combines a heavy duty 3D top deck with a flip-flow bottom deck, ensuring efficient processing of moist, sticky, and fine materials while maintaining high screening quality with minimal wear and maintenance.

The Process

• Waste material is loaded into the feeder, then transported via conveyor to the Spaleck 3D Combi Screen.

• The top deck removes the 15-50mm material, which then passes under a magnet to extract ferrous metals. The remaining material goes to an air-separator to produce a clean stone product.

• The bottom deck separates 0-15mm material, producing an LOI-compliant fines product.

• Oversized material (50mm+) moves down the Spaleck Combi Screen into Easy Load’s existing picking line for final sorting and separation.

Tom Lee, Director at Easy Load comments: “We are delighted with the new system installed by Blue Machinery (Southern). Our previous plant was only capable of producing a 30mm fines material, which was not only inefficient but also a financial burden on the business. We are now producing consistent fines and recovering a substantial amount of metal and stone that was previously a cost to dispose.

We’ve had a longstanding relationship with Blue, having purchased several Doppstadt shredders and trommels from them over the years, and their service has always been exceptional. When it came time to upgrade our recycling plant, there was no hesitation in turning to Blue once again. Their expertise, professionalism, and commitment to delivering the best solution for our needs have been outstanding.”

Late in 2024, we caught up with the team on-site at the Ironbridge power station, where Skillings were busy breaking out the heavy concrete foundations of the former plant buildings. Taking on the challenge were two Rammer 9033E hammers and a Rammer 5011E—the two largest models in Rammer’s Excellence Line of hydraulic breakers.

“Rammer hydraulic breakers—tools that have become synonymous with power, reliability, and top-tier performance”

The Rammer 5011E is built for carriers between 43–80 tons and delivers reliable, consistent power thanks to its highpressure membrane accumulator. Its rugged design keeps it going strong, even in tough environments like this one.

Meanwhile, the Rammer 9033E is a true heavy-hitter, built for carriers up to 120 tons. Delivering immense impact energy with every strike, it's designed to thrive in the most demanding demolition settings. Features like stroke adjustment and an idle blow protector ensure that it's as smart as it is strong.

Speaking about the company’s long-term use of Rammer breakers, David Skillings commented:

“Over the years we’ve tried several breaker brands, but Rammer stands out for its unbeatable performance and reliability. Nothing matches it for breaking power.

Combine that with the fantastic support we get from Mick Reeve and the team at Blue Machinery (Central), and it's an easy choice to keep going back to Rammer.”

With skilled operators and a well-equipped fleet, Skillings Crushing Company continues to set the bar high for demolition excellence in the UK.

KKB Plugged in for Screening Success

KKB Group, a leading provider of integrated services to the regeneration and infrastructure sectors across the UK, has recently expanded its fleet with the addition of four new Powerscreen Chieftain 1400 Dual Power inclined screens. Based in Rochester, Kent, KKB Group is renowned for its expertise in land remediation, demolition, civil engineering, and plant hire. Among their core offerings is contract crushing and screening, where they convert concrete, asphalt, and hardcore into certified recycled aggregates such as Type 1 and 6F2.

A long-standing partnership spanning over two decades has seen Blue Machinery supply KKB Group with a wide range of Powerscreen equipment. Over the years, the Powerscreen Chieftain has proven a reliable workhorse in KKB’s operations. The Chieftain’s 4-bearing screenbox design and rugged build quality have made it the screen of choice for many demanding applications.

KKB’s recent investment in four Chieftain 1400 Dual Power machines marks a significant step in their ongoing commitment to operational efficiency and sustainability. Each unit is equipped with dual 30kW motors—one electric, one diesel—offering flexibility to power the machines either through an onboard engine or via an external power source.

In practice, the new Chieftains are being fully powered by surplus energy from KKB’s diesel-electric impact crushers,

meaning the screens operate without needing to run their own engines.

This approach not only results in impressive fuel savings, but also leads to lower servicing costs, reduced emissions, and a substantial drop in engine runtime. In many cases, the onboard engines are only used for tracking the machines into place, leaving them virtually untouched for most of the machine’s operational life. This unique setup means that when the time comes to sell or replace the machines, the engines are essentially brand new.

Despite the efficiencies gained by piggybacking off crusher-generated power, the Chieftain 1400 Dual Power units retain the flexibility to run independently. With a simple flick of a switch, operators can choose to run the machines using diesel power or mains electricity, making them ideal for both integrated and stand-alone applications on various job sites.

The new machines will be deployed across the UK at blue chip customer sites, supporting contract crushing and screening projects that process road planings, asphalt, and other recycled materials. The deployment highlights KKB Group’s continued investment in modern, sustainable technology and underlines their commitment to reducing environmental impact without compromising performance.
