From left to right: Valentine Red Rogers, Plenty Try, My Drifty Pride, Ruano Rojo. Behind: Wyo Blue Bonnet Please read... Regarding foals in the sale: We put a lot of effort getting foals ready to be weaned, making sure they are eating hay and grain and are used to being away from their moms. They are in good condition and it is our expectation that you take the foal when the sale is over. If travel arrangements you have made with Chip, Dick, Randy or Sam involve your foal going back to their house, the foal will still be weaned. This is the policy unless otherwise stated. Loading out: Horses can be loaded out after the sale Saturday or on Sunday morning. Present your yellow slip to sale personnel. Special circumstances may be made only with Randy, Chip, Dick or Sam, at the buyers expense and in writing.

NOTE: Before You Buy - Please ask about the worming/vaccination schedule and anything else you would like to know about each horse. When the gavel falls the horse belongs to the new owner. Any extra fees from that time forward for vaccination, vet/medical, farrier, transport, international shipping, if and when the horse is in Chip, Randy, Sam or Dick’s care, will be the responsibility of new owner. If travel arrangements have been made with Chip, Dick, Randy or Sam that involve your horse going back to their house, the following schedule/fees apply: After 10 days - $4/day • After 30 days - $10/day Above mentioned fees must be paid before horse can be released.

The Driftwoods... • Our concentration of Driftwood blood started with the Stanley and Randy Johnston mares. These mares were a blend of Driftwood, Poco Speedy, Orphan Drift, Sak Em San (son of Peppy San), Doc’s Jack Frost (sire of Sun Frost) and Captain Crusade. We bred these mares to our Blue Valentine stallions. • Another good cross was My Drifty Pride and daughters of Gooseberry. This proven program, through Valentine Drift, has given us genetic strength and diversity for the future.

“Randy” is one of the last sons of Blue’s Beard, and we think he’s the best. He has a nice hip and a kind disposition. He earned points in heeling with limited showing at aqha shows in 2001, ridden by Shot Branham. He also sired the National Foundation Performance Review Champion, Laramie Blues.

Sam Shoultz

This 18.75% Driftwood stallion produces good-minded colts worthy of the Driftwood reputation. ‘Sunny’ is smooth-strided and he passes his speed onto his foals without any of the ‘hot’ attitude. He has earned points in heading and heeling with limited showing at AQHA shows in 2001.

“Cowboy” is a big powerful horse that is quick and can really stop hard. He has earned his ROM in heading and heeling, qualified for the AQHA World Show and won the Oklahoma State Fair team roping. He is easy to be around and has lots of personality. He comes to about 22% Joe Hancock blood and over 8% Peter McCue. He is making an excellent cross on our Blue Valentine mares. He’s a true blue champion! Dick Van Pelt

Chip Merritt

We looked around for a stud that met our criteria for preserving the Blue Valentine bloodlines. After breeding some mares to this horse and getting all outstanding colts, we decided to purchase him. Chip remembers roping calves and punching cows on Rowdy Blue Man and Blue Fox Hastings was a full sister to Gooseberry. He’s 50% Blue Valentine and the extra Plenty Coup is a bonus.

Randy Dunn

We named him this because in blood he is 43.75% Blue Valentine. People who knew Rojo when he was younger have said this horse looks and acts just like him. He is the closest thing to Rojo that has been raised. We believe he has an exciting future ahead of him. 15 hands and 1300 lbs. Sam Shoultz

Sak Em is a Peppy San grandson, an AQHA Champion 1967, AQHA High Point Cutting Stallion, and an AQHA Hall of Fame Horse. Blending this cow horse blood with Blue Valentine and Driftwood produced a blended stallion for us that has a great disposition!

This is our replacement for Valentine Drift who we lost in 2010. Plenty of Blue Valentine and a shot of My Drifty Pride. “For many years we have been raising high percentage foundation Blue Valentine and Driftwood offspring. A big thank you to all of the customers who have made this sale a success and for proving what these horses are capable of doing. To our partners Chip, Dick and Randy – your contributions and friendships are greatly appreciated.” ~ Sam Shoultz

We have campaigned our homebred stallions on the competitive AQHA Open Circuit. We want to breed horses that can compete with the best and prove they can win, and this is exactly what they have done. Blue Fox Hancock, Mr Junewood, Driftwood Sensation, Hancock Red Fox, and now Mr Fritz Wood have all earned Open AQHA performance points in the cattle events; they all carry time proven working genetics. Our horses have good minds - what you show them today they will remember tomorrow.

I love riding this horse, and there is nothing I would change about him. He is what you want for an athletic performance horse. For a 4 year old to qualify for the AQHA World Show in 3 events says a lot, he needs to be not only good but also consistent, and this takes a special horse. ‘Fritz’ has a huge stop, great turn around and is a tough enough competitor to be a high point contender and not all horses are capable of this. He could be an equal to Blue Fox as far as a contender that is tough to beat. ~ Luke Jones, exhibitor of multiple World Show competitors

The highest AQHA point earning, high percentage Blue Valentine (43.75%) To earn a high point award is difficult and a huge honor for Blue Fox. High point horses work harder by the number of shows and the number of different judges they show to. They have to be a very consistent horse to do this. Blue Fox’s offspring that I have trained and shown are good minded, easy to start and train, are structurally sound and have the ability and desire to stop correctly, just like Blue Fox. ~ Luke Jones, exhibitor of multiple World Show qualifiers

Blue Fox has proven his ability against the best horses being shown today, plus his strong genetics are proven by his offspring that are showing and winning. No other Blue Valentine horse comes close to his record; all his points have been earned in the most competitive open division.

Bath Bros Ranch

Randy and Laurie Dunn - Carrying on the Bath Family Tradition

My ancestors, the Baths, came to Laramie in the spring of 1868. The railroad followed in the fall, and the Territory of Wyoming was formed. The Baths built the first woodframed building in Laramie in 1869 before moving to the Little Laramie Valley to start raising cattle and horses. The Bath Brothers had a long and strong tradition of raising good using horses and reputation cattle. In the 1930’s, they raised Remount Horses for the government. They began raising Quarter Horses in the late 30’s, and became AQHA members in the early 40’s. My wife, Laurie, and I continue the 140+ year tradition of raising quality horses on the same ranch. We still use the family’s original AQHA number (#7965) as our Lifetime AQHA number, and carry on the same principles that have been handed down for seven generations in the Bath family. Our horses are easy keepers with good minds, speed, bone, and tons of cow and athletic ability.

Our ranch is one of the oldest working ranches in Wyoming and our brand is one of the oldest recorded in the state. Our horses are raised in big, open pastures along side of the cattle. We use the horses we raise and feel they offer the genetic strength to perform and compete in any discipline or arena. Our program includes 4 grandsons and 31 granddaughters of Blue Valentine. We are ranchers raisin’ good horses! ~ Randy Dunn

Running M geldings - your source for TESTED quality performance horses. Billy Ward - Riding and Selling Bath Bros horses.

PRCA 7-time NFR pickup man and friend, Billy Ward, is exclusively riding and marketing our geldings. To date Billy has taken more than 50 geldings from Bath Bros. As a pick-up man, Billy has to be mounted on GOOD horses. Running M horses have consistently proven to be what he needs to get the job done. Billy has taken, and is taking, over 20 head to Cheyenne Frontier Days and Rodeos all over the country. These horses perform in the various parades, carry dignitaries during the rodeo and both Billy and Dalton (his son) will use them to pick-up off of. There is not much these horses have not seen or done by the time they are 5. This exposure, coupled with trainability and athleticism, is what makes these geldings a perfect choice for anyone looking for a horse to GET THE JOB DONE! Contact Billy at 307-575-0695 and talk to him about a horse that will work for you. We feel so priveledged to be breeding and developing these outstanding horses.

Merritt Quarter Horses Chip, Kathy, Brady & Corey The Start of A Tradition...

It all began in 1880 when my great-grandfather, Vince Hayes, trailed a herd of good mares from Ft. Riley, Nevada to Thermopolis, Wyoming. His two sons, Buster and Laurie, continued the tradition of raising and riding top horses and sought ways to improve them. Around 1951, they purchased Texas Blue Bonnet, a son of Joe Hancock. They started crossing him on their own mares and in 1955 a Patron mare bred to him produced a foal named Plenty Coup, who went on to also produce many top colts.

Vince Hayes in the late 1800s.

At about the same time my grandfather, King Merritt, brought one of the first Quarter Horse stallions, “Old Red Buck P-9” to Wyoming. As a respected horseman, King had judged the first Quarter Horse show in California. He and all his children were well known for their horsemanship skills. King and his son Hyde brought additional stallions to Wyoming, including Ambrose and Patron. Hyde inherited from his father the satisfaction of riding a good horse he knew he had raised. In the fall of 1956, Ken Gunter gave Del Haverty the pick of the Red Man colts. Del picked a blue roan stallion named Blue Valentine. Del trained Blue to rope Buster and Laurie Hayes calves, tie-down team rope, and haze dogging steers. Blue later was most famous as a steer roping horse but Del always felt he was a better calf horse than anything. Del sold half interest in Blue Valentine to Buster and Laurie Hayes. Buster and Laurie stood Texas Blue Bonnet, Plenty Coup, and Blue Valentine. It was quite an experience to see these studs out with the excellent set of mares Buster and Laurie had accumulated. The tradition continued when my mother, Dede (Buster’s daughter), married my father, Hyde. Hyde started breeding his Ambrose mares to Hayes’ Plenty Coup, then took that cross and bred to Blue Valentine. This program produced the stallion Gooseberry, Crow Creek (Lory’s top calf horse), and many good mares.

Buster Hayes with three sons of Texas Blue Bonnet.

Hyde and Dede then bought the other half interest in Blue Valentine from Del. Hyde felt like it was a great privilege to rope steers on Blue. In 1970 Hyde roped at his last Cheyenne Frontier Days on Blue. Everet Shaw, who rode his share of great steer roping horses, told Hyde that Blue was the best horse at Cheyenne that year. Hyde and Del both felt that Blue started out of the box quicker and could catch cattle easier than any horse they had ridden. The combination of Blue’s athletic ability and Del’s training made him hard to beat.

The Tradition Lives On...

Gathering Blue Valentine Two and his mares. Kathy and I continue this tradition by raising horses with as much Texas Blue Bonnet, Plenty Coup, Ambrose and Blue Valentine as possible, hoping to preserve the heritage of these great bloodlines. Offering the best horses we can raise is what we work on all year round. What we bring to the sale each year is no accident. Kathy & I work diligently with the future of these horses in mind. We know what the two of us like in a horse, but the direction of our breeding program involves a lot more than that. Each year’s colt crop represents our efforts to improve upon the last. People tell us that these horses have such good dispositions. No matter what different things we do with a horse, we all want to ride one that’s gentle, versatile and athletic.

Lot #8 Above, Chip using 'Plenty' to gather a stud bunch. Left is 'Plenty' when Brady was two. Below, Brady on 'Plenty' recently.

Thank you Randy, Dick and Sam for your commitment to a partnership and your vision of showing these horse to the rest of the world. To those of you who love these bloodlines and give us a reason to keep them going...OUR ENDLESS APPRECIATTION! Brady and Corey driving the mares on two sons of Wyo Blue Bonnet. 'Texas' and 'Hooey' are just like all the other Blue Bonnets - kind, easy to start, fun to ride and always looking for a job to do.

Wyo Blue Bonnet 1991-2011

Blue Bonnet was a part of Come To The Source since the start. Even though Kathy and I knew early on he would made an outstanding stud, we had no idea the kind of name he would make for himself. He was an incredible individual. A number of sons and daughters have been high sellers and we are riding sons and a daughter of his at home. He was the best.....we were lucky to have him as long as we did.

A HUGE THANK YOU to our family and friends!

Dick & Dianne Van Pelt • 142 Vista Grande Way • Laramie, Wyoming 82070

www.VistaGrandeHorses.com VanPelt’s Vista Grande Ranch is located south of Laramie, Wyoming about 8 miles south of I-80 nestled at the base of the Laramie Range of mountains at about 7400 feet above sea level. The high plains of Wyoming, its good hard grass, cold mountain water and acres and acres of bright blue unpolluted sky is home to the Van Pelt string of top quality ranch bred working cow horses going back to Blue Valentine, Joe Hancock and Leo. We know everyone likes a choice and we’re here to offer it to you from working ranch horses to team roping and barrel racing…we’ll have one for you.

Dick and Dianne

On Friday Afternoon at the fairgrounds

we are going to have a warm-up for the rope horses for Saturday’s preview. So come take a peek. Every year we like to elevate our programs to a higher level. We are still striving for that goal. We think you will see the results of that effort again this year. As I have tried to slow down, I have leased out some mares to Roy and Brandee Gillum who help run the family ranch at Peetz, Colorado. Roy and Brandee have their first riding mare in this sale, and I think you’re going to like her.

The Gillum Family

Greg Frye and his family continue to bring horses that are 'dog gentle' as shown in this picture of Jennaya, Riyatta and Greg with their trusty old dog getting a free ride. Greg starts most of my horses and his children finish them up – cracking bull whips on them proves how 'dog gentle' they will be.

Clayton will have more just like this one at the sale this year.

Clayton Van Aken who you Jennaya, Riyatta and Greg Frye met last year where he brought several good heel horses to the “Horses are like potato chips... sale, is going to be here again you can’t have just one... with two good ones. Clayton but Dianne tells me I don’t has actually spent quite a bit of need the whole bag” time on the rodeo circuit where he has had some good success this year. Lydia Coe who is also on the UW Rodeo Team will bring a good gelding she has been riding between rodeos. She has a light hand and I think you will like what she has to show you.

So if you want a good value in a young horse that you can go on with you can find them at the Come to the Source. You will find that in a couple of years you will have a horse that if you went to buy it at a ranch horse sale, it would cost you 3 to 4 times what you paid at our sale. Here is your opportunity.

Everyone has a choice...thank you for choosing us.

It was very rewarding to receive pictures of Linus Clark and Clay O’Brien Cooper winning the 4th Annual Sweetest Loop Pro-Am Roping in 2009. Linus is riding an 8-yr-old son of Blue Hancock Cowboy out of a Leo bred mare. Linus trained this horse himself and Clay was impressed with the horse’s consistency. He commented on the excellent handles knowing all he had to do was come around the corner and do his job. Congratulations to both Clay and Linus and their good horses.

Linda Van Pelt with Roan Rudy, a top quality working ranch horse.

A lot of the reward for a quarter horse breeder is when someone takes your horse and has success with it. The ultimate reward for me is when a youngster like little Wylee Cheney takes one of my horses and goes on to win. Pictured is Wylee on Kadee and showing off the saddle she won. Kadee has become her #1 Flag Event horse (after losing her older event horse last Fall)) and as of print time for the catalogue, Wylee was at the National Finals in Pueblo, Colorado with Kadee whose registered name is Misty Red Velvet. I like to think my horses are versatile enough to do just about anything and this horse and her little rider sure prove it. This is the 2010 high seller, Blue Fire Hancock, who went to Kerrie Lockhart of Alabama. She won the first roping she ever took him to! Now he is consistently winning at the high school level in the team roping and the calf roping. You too, can take one of Greg’s two year olds or Clayton’s three year olds and make them into winners for you.

Blue Will Do, a full brother to Roan Rudy. Danny Schicke has won a lot of team roping on this big blue horse.

Clayton Van Aken and Dick won 2nd at the USTRC Regional Finals in Loveland, Colorado. Dick is real proud of Jimmy who ropes in a ‘pencil’ bosal. Jimmy goes back to Plenty Coup and his dam is a maternal ½ sister to Leo Hancock Hayes. Dick says sometimes we don’t give enough credit to the mare.

This is Bay Roan Dividend, who I have chosen to replace Blues Roan Hancock (Randy). He is by Blues Roan Hancock and out of a double bred Dividend Coup mare. If my wife has her way I will cut down the number of my mares and he will be a replacement for Jimmy, my rope horse.

Dick and his grandsons, Jackson and Carson. We would like to thank all of our customers, friends, family and our partners. The Come To The Source sale is a challenging and rewarding production sale to put together and we certainly could not do it without the help and support of all of you. It takes a lot to maintain a breeding program at this level and you are the ones who make it worthwhile.

One of the last sons of Rojo Valentine, this colt is out of a top Leo Hancock Hayes daughter. The Rojo Valentines make great riding horses that have a lot of cow in them. The Driftwood and Leo blood does not hurt either. ‘Bogart’ is a big colt with a lot of try; he continuously gives his all and is very receptive to his riders. He has a very smooth gait that will cover some ground. ‘Bogart’ is a fast learner and very attuned to your body language, making him attentive and easy to work with.

This mare has been ridden for 38 days and she has alot of action, but is very sensible. She has speed written all over her. Meanest Competitor was AAA and a track record holder. Retco was also AAA. Her sire proved himself in the performance arena. Ride this one to the pay window, or use her to raise winners.

This easy going gelding is a smooth mover and covers a lot of country. He will stop hard and is a natural at lead changes. Riyatta says he could make a very nice youth horse to compete on if you go on with him.

This mare has had some good ones in the past. I’ve kept a son of hers to replace Blues Roan Hancock and to also replace my heel horse Jimmy. I think this filly should have a lot of potential as a broodmare or arena horse, or both.

Strong Blue Valentine genetics though the sire, and the dam adds a lot as well. Lovelady is the mother of Mr Fritz Wood (by Mr Junewood) that has over 100 Open AQHA performance points and is qualified in 3 events at the 2012 World Show. 'Strawberry' is a nice filly with loads of potential.

'Schnapps' is a fine 17.2% Driftwood colt. His pedigree has several of the best sons and daughters of Driftwood. Driftwood Sensation and Mr Junewood are both AQHA point earners and Silver San Tam is the dam of many good foals, some standing as stallions. A rare opportunity to own a Driftwood colt bred like this.

Pee Wee Valentine is one of my favorite daughters of Rojo. She is big, good looking and has a disposition to match. This colt pinched a nerve, which has given him a floppy lip. It has continued to get better, but it's still there. He is a big pet and nothing bothers him. He could be a kids horse one day, but also, Jennaya says, you can wake up and get a lot of work done on him.

Here is a nice roan stud colt that is growing well. Blue Hancock Cowboy has crossed very well on the Blue Valentine mares. Judging by his parents, he will grow up to be a strong and sturdy horse. He is well balanced and is an easy mover. On the dam's side, he traces back to the famous horse Go Man Go, who had earnings of over $86,000.

I've always liked Wyo Fancy Dan, who was owned by Martin Black, Ray Hunt's son-in-law, and this is my last daughter of him. Lots of performance in the pedigree on both sides. Strait Silver sired point earners in 8 different events. This mare is bred to Wyo Blue Valentine, but bred too early for Laramie's winter. The foal will either be grey or roan and it should be a good one. Exposed 4/6 to 8/22.
