The Dome Gymnasium

One of Bluefield College’s historic buildings - constructed in 1968 as the Golden Dome - the Dome Gymnasium provides one of the most unique atmostpheres you’ll experience in collegiate athletics. With a capacity of 800, fans envelope the playing court with seating courtside and on the upper concourse.

The facility houses coaches’ offices, an athletic training room, trainers’ offices, locker rooms, team rooms and batting cages for BC’s softball program.

During the summer of 2013, the Dome recieved a variety of upgrades, including renovated locker rooms, fresh paint on virtually every wall, a rewaxed competition floor and a new press area for streaming, radio and visiting media.

Bluefield College Weight Center

Located just minutes from the Bluefield College campus, the BC Weight Center allows for top-level strength training for Bluefield College’s athletic programs. The Weight Center is equipped with state-of-the-art weight equipment, multiple sets of weights and additional training tools. Bluefield College’s football coaches’ offices are also housed in the facility.

Richard Morgan

Head Coach Fifth Season University of Virginia, ‘89 Richard Morgan brought more than a decade of NCAA coaching experience to the Bluefield College men’s basketball program upon his hire in 2009. Beyond his coaching experience, Morgan was a decorated collegiate player at the University of Virginia and a standout athlete at Salem High School – making his Virginian roots run even deeper.

The Rams posted a 17-16 record during Morgan’s first year at the helm of the program. Bluefield went 11-5 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play to grab a share of the regular season title. Morgan’s guidance helped senior Omar Reed earn AAC Defensive Player of the Year, AAC Player of the Year and NAIA Third Team All-America honors.

Morgan joined the Bluefield athletics family after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. He helped the Mountaineers to a school record 25 wins and a National Invitational Tournament (NIT) appearance in 2007, in addition to back-to-back Southern Conference (SoCon) regular season championships (2006-07, 2007-08).

Before his time with Appalachian State, Morgan served as an associate head coach at Hampton University for three years. Morgan helped the Pirates to consistently strong seasons in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships (MEAC), including a MEAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006. This was Morgan’s second stint with Hampton, as he served as an assistant from 1996-98.

Prior to his Hampton return, Morgan spent five seasons (1999-2003) as an assistant at East Carolina University.

In each of his first three seasons, Morgan led the Rams to postseason play, both in the AAC and the National Christian College Athletic Association’s Mid-East Region.

The Rams transitioned to the highly competitive Mid-South Conference for the 2012-13 season and concluded the year with eight wins. However, Bluefield dropped five games by five points or less, including a pair of overtime games. In the Rams’ first-ever MSC game, they knocked off No. 3 ranked Georgetown College, 96-89.

2013 also marked the end of BC standout Byron Carpenter’s career.

Morgan brought the Virginia Beach, Va., native to Bluefield for a threeyear career where the center tallied 1795 points – an average of 20.2 points per game. Carpenter earned second team All-AAC (2011), first team All-AAC (2012), AAC Player of the Year (2012) NAIA second team All-American (2012) and first team All Mid-South Conference (2013) honors during his career.

Morgan pursued coaching after a successful career as a professional and collegiate player. As a three-year starter at Virginia, Morgan finished his career ranked sixth all-time in scoring with 1,540 points. He also ranked third at UVa in steals (160) and seventh in assists (279). He earned first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) honors and was named honorable mention All-America by The Sporting News after leading the Cavs to the Elite Eight in 1989. Following his graduation with a sports management degree, Morgan played basketball professionally for two seasons with the Rockford Lightning of the CBA and overseas with teams in Austria and the Philippines.

He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Salem High School, where he helped lead the program to district, regional and state championships. He also served as a paraprofessional for special education programs.

“This is a dream come true for me and my family,” Morgan stated when he joined the Rams. “I am very aware of the great tradition here at Bluefield College and I look forward to the challenge of continuing that success.”

Morgan and his wife, Sherelle, have two sons, Nicholas and Kaleb.

Keith “Mister” Jennings joined the Bluefield College men’s Assistant Coach basketball coaching staff in Fifth Season East Tennessee State, ‘91 2009 with head coach Richard Morgan. He has served as Morgan’s top assistant, in addition to overlooking the Rams’ junior varsity program.

Keith Jennings

The former NCAA All-American point guard brings a wealth of leadership and playing experience to the Rams’ program. Jennings had an illustrious collegiate career at East Tennessee State University prior to playing professionally for more than a decade. Jennings was inducted into the ETSU Hall of Fame on May 5, 2013.

Jennings came to Bluefield following a pair of coaching stints at the high school level. In 2008-09, Jennings served as an assistant coach at Science Hill in Johnson City, Tenn., helping guide the Hilltoppers to a 31-5 mark. Jennings also spent three years as the head boys varsity basketball coach at Highland School in Warrenton, Va. He also served as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, while completing his degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Individually, Jennings is often considered the greatest basketball player in ETSU history. He was a second-team All-American in 1991 and also earned the Naismith Award (which goes to the nation’s best player under six feet tall), SoCon Player of the Year and SoCon Tournament MVP honors during his time at ETSU. Jennings ranks fourth all-time in ETSU program scoring (1,988 points) and holds multiple records, including career totals for assists (983) and steals (334), single season records for assists per game (9.1) and steals per game (3.4), and single game marks for assists (19) and free throws made (18). Jennings was a prolific shooter from beyond the arc, owning a career 3-point field goal percentage of 49.3. His mark of 59 percent from 3-point-range led the country in 1991.

Professionally, Jennings played professionally for 13 seasons. He played three years with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors (1992-95), averaging 6.6 points per game and 3.7 assists per game, and one year with the Denver Nuggets (1996-97). He also played professionally in Europe.

The Culpepper, Va., native has two kids, Keith Jr. and Kaycee.

Jennings helped put ETSU basketball on the map during his collegiate career with the Buccaneers. He led ETSU to three-straight Southern Conference Championships from 1989 to 1991, giving the Buccaneers an unprecedented three-straight NCAA Tournament Appearances. The Buccaneers also rose to a No. 10 ranking in 1991.

Derrick Price

Assistant Coach Third Season Bluefield College, ‘02

Former Ram student-athlete Derrick Price joined the Bluefield College men’s basketball coaching staff in 2011.

Price led the Rams to an Appalachian Athletic Conference Championship in 2002 en route to a NAIA National Tournament appearance. He was named first team All-AAC for his performance during the season.

Price joined the Rams’ coaching staff after four years with Bluefield Middle School, where he served as head coach.

Price brings a passion for youth and community to the BC program.

The Philadelphia, Pa., native has served in several leadership and coaching roles at the recreational center for the last six years. He also is involved with various AAU tournaments during the summer months.

Price graduated from Bluefield College in 2002, earning a B.S. in computer technology. He also currently works with BC as a Financial Aid Counselor for online programs.

Ryan Moody serves as the team’s Director of Operations. His primary duties for the program include game tape exchanges, securing travel arrangements and laundry.

Moody, a native of Danville, Va., is also a member of the Bluefield College golf team.

“I am truly blessed to coach at my alma mater and share my playing and coaching experience with the team,” said Price upon his hire with the basketball program. “I look forward to gaining more knowledge from the great coaches we already have on staff.”

MJ (Melissa J.) Baker

Head Coach Third Season Univ. of West Florida, ‘05 Already an accomplished and decorated head coach, MJ (Melissa J.) Baker joined Bluefield College in 2011 and quickly brought the women’s basketball program to new heights.

After an 11-win season for 2010-11, Baker took over the program and led the Rams to a record 22 wins and a first-ever top-25 ranking in the NAIA Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Poll. Bluefield posted a 13-5 record in Appalachian Athletic Conference play and advanced to the National Christian Athletic Association National Tournament, claiming a sixthplace finish.

In her first season, Baker was named the NCCAA Mid-East Region Coach of the Year, following the team’s NCCAA Mid-East Region title.

She led student-athletes to NCCAA Honorable Mention All-American (Tequila McNeal), NCCAA All Mid-East Region (Tequila McNeal, Takieya Rouse and Kia Gilliard) and second team All-AAC (Tequila McNeal and Kia Gilliard) honors.

Baker then led the Rams as they transitioned to the competitive MidSouth Conference for the 2012-13 season. After being voted to finish last in the preseason poll of the powerful conference, Baker helped the Rams claim eight MSC wins and claim a spot in the MSC Women’s Basketball Championships. Bluefield won their first-ever MSC game, taking down then No. 6 ranked Georgetown College, 83-73. Six MSC programs went on to compete in the NAIA National Tournament.

Student-athletes once again received a variety of notable awards following the 2012-13 season, including NCCAA All-American (Tequila McNeal, Ashley White), NCCAA Co-Player of the Year (Tequila McNeal), NCCAA All Mid-East Region (Tequila McNeal, Ashley White, Janee Simmons, Monique Robson), second team All Mid-South Conference (Tequila McNeal, Ashley White) and Academic All Mid-South Conference (Tequila McNeal, Jade McDaniel, Megan Tennant).

Prior to taking over the Bluefield College program, Baker spent two seasons as head coach at Spartanburg Methodist College in South Carolina. She was named Region X Coach of the Year after leading her team to an undefeated conference record during her final season. Before SMC, Baker served as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala. Her career as a head coach began at the high school level in Louisiana, where she coached at John Curtis Christian. She led the girls program to two basketball state titles (2007 and 08), the first in school history.

She was named the Louisiana 2A Coach of the Year.

As a player, Baker was an NCAA DII standout for the University of West Florida, where she still holds the all-time records in rebounds and shot blocks. In her final season, Baker was named second team All-South Region and NCAA Division II All-American Honorable Mention in 2005.

Baker has also been a part of the prestigious Nike Skills Academy on a regional and national level as a staff coach and serves as Pro-Trainer for Ganon Baker Basketball.

Baker and her husband, Ganon have been married for two years.

Jessica Brokaw

Assistant Coach Sixth Season Bluefield College, ‘08 Following her four-year career as a student-athlete at Bluefield College, Jessica Brokaw joined the coaching staff with the women’s basketball program in 2008.

Brokaw has served as an assistant coach ever since, organizing scheduling, practice and travel plans for the women’s basketball program, in addition to assisting with recruiting.

Brokaw was also named as the interim head women’s basketball coach during the 2010-11 season, following the departure of the former head coach. Brokaw completed the season at the head of the program as the team went on to win 11 games.

Brokaw’s additional duties as an assistant include serving as an academic advisor, assisting with player development and coordinating film exchanges with visiting teams.

During her playing days for the Rams, Brokaw was a four-year starter and a four-year captain as Bluefield competed in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. All four years, Brokaw was voted to receive the “Team Before Self ” award. She averaged 10 points, four assists and three rebounds per game during her career. She also received the Most Valuable Player award, as chosen by her teammates.

In high school, Brokaw played at Lexington High School in Ohio from 2000-2004. She was a standout on her high school team, leading them to a state tournament final four – the first women’s basketball state appearance for the program. She was a three-year captain and started all four years. Brokaw led Lexington High to two conference championships, two region berths, four district appearances and led LHS to a record of 82-18 record in the four-year span. Brokaw averaged seven points, seven assists and four rebounds per game for her career.

In addition to her women’s basketball duties, Brokaw serves as the Division Manager for Bluefield College Athletics. She acts as a liaison between athletics and multiple College departments. She assists with controlling team’s budgets, organizes a variety of internal schedules and plans many BC athletic events to assist with the direction of the overall athletic program.

Peter Dryer

Athletic Director Cedarville, ‘05 Peter Dryer came to Bluefield College prior to the fall of 2010, taking post as the head men’s soccer coach. Since then, Dryer has continually developed the Rams’ men’s soccer program, while also taking on the role of Bluefield College Athletic Director during the spring of 2011.

Dryer played his collegiate career at Cedarville University in Ohio.

He served as a captain and was voted NCCAA All Mid-West Region and to the American Mid-East Conference South Division team. The Yellow Jackets made three NCCAA national Tournament appearances and earned a Top 25 NAIA National Ranking during Dryer’s career.

He graduated from Cedarville in 2005 with a degree in business management. He then completed his master’s degree while at Geneva College, studying higher education.

Dryer and his wife, Kristin, have a son, Cooper, who was born in March 2011 and a daughter Noelle, who was born in October 2013.

Under Dryer’s leadership, BC athletics completed its reinstatement of a football program – returning to the football field after a 70-year absence – and transitioned to the Mid-South Conference, one of the NAIA’s premiere conferences.

After the men’s soccer program posted a four-win season in 2010, Dryer quickly doubled the wins output to eight in 2011. The Rams once again posted eight wins in 2012, including four wins in MSC play.

Dryer’s leadership of the program has enabled the setting of multiple new records and an upward trend for the future.

Before Bluefield, Dryer spent three seasons as the assistant coach at NCAA Division III Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Penn. The Golden Tornados posted three-straight National Christian College Athletic Association Regional Tournament appearances and accumulated a 3916 regular season record. This includes a 15-4 mark during Dryer’s final season with the program. Additionally, Dryer was active in coaching youth soccer in the greater Pittsburgh area. He served as the Director of Coaching for the Pittsburgh Strikers Soccer Club, a premiere soccer club, and coached multiple teams within the organization. Dryer currently holds his NSCAA Advanced National Coaching License.
