WINNING IMAGE: “Iceland Harbor” “We were on a family vacation/tour to Iceland this summer and found the weather and conditions for photography quite variable. The scenery was unique, vast, and difficult to capture. On a ferry to the Westman Islands, we left the harbor from the main Island where it was dreary and rough. We arrived to a socked-in island of fog, mist and clouds. We enjoyed a short window of time when the clouds broke up and some blue sky peered from between the clouds. The fishing fleet and other boats in the harbor were impressively colorful and a welcome sight to our otherwise grey day. “
HONORABLE MENTION: Ray Palmer Title: “Heron Hill” - Keuka Lake, NY Ray Palmer resides in Glenville, NY.
Primarily a nature photographer, he is drawn to landscapes, wildlife, and macro imagery. However, he looks at photography as a medium of opportunities, so any subject is fair game. Ray’s work has appeared in publications, calendars, and various exhibitions. While much of the year includes shooting the Adirondacks of New York, his website and images reflect extensive time spent in spectacular locations around the country and beyond. Opportunity can find you on a rugged trail waiting for a break between snow squalls, or witnessing dawn on the docks of a working lobster harbor. It is always a challenge to capture a sense of place. It is in the lines of the land, the rapids of the river, the angle of the wildflower’s tilt. In the context of editing photos, resolution is a measurement of the output quality of an image. The most common units to measure resolution include: PPI (pixels per inch) DPI (dots per inch) LPI (lines per inch) SPI (samples per inch) When printing photographs, we talk PPI and DPI , as well as Megapixels (MP) which simply means “one million pixels” and is used when describing digital camera capability. PPI is used when selecting a resolution for your images in photo editing software. Pixel is an abbreviation for “picture element.” To best select a pixel resolution for your photos, consider the end application (in print or online) and how large they will appear. A good number to remember when printing an image is 300 pixels/inch at actual size. In other words, when you resize an image with photo editing software, set the dimensions of the image to the print size first (e.g. 5 x7) and then set the resolution to 300 pixels/inch. The lower the pixels per inch, the blurrier the image will appear inprint. Most images from the Internet are typically 72 ppi. When you try to enlarge a picture with such a low resolution further, you are asking the software application to make up for pixels that don’t exist; the image will get blurrier. For great printing results with the least strain on your computer memory resources, use the quick reference chart.
