Kirsch, Hedman win top awards Senior Awards night honors top students

Hundreds of awards and recognitions were presented at Senior Awards Night on Tuesday, June 4 at 6 p.m. at the Brunelle theater. Among the scholarships and memorial awards were the three largest awards: athlete of year, educator of the year and the Gordon H. True Service Cup. Seniors Juan Zarate-Sanchez, Alex Agnew and Tiya Kamba-Griffin all won athlete of the year, while social studies teacher Kevin Williams was recognized as the Floyd Fenocchio Memorial Educator of the Year Award. Seniors Silas Kirsch and Rachel Hedman won the Gordon H. True Service Cup for their spirit and service to the school.

Kirsch and Hedman both felt honored to be thanked by fellow students for their service.

“To have so many people applauding for me for something I don’t do for applause or recognition and more people come and congratulate you, it is pretty special and made me feel awfully grateful to those who thought I deserved it,” Kirsch said.

For Hedman, the award meant a lot as she has a deep connection with the school.

“It meant the world to me. Davis High is kind of my home and like my family and the school itself just means the world to me, so being chosen by a school to represent the class just meant the world,” Hedman said.

Hundreds of scholarships were also awarded. Senior Vinita Saxena took home a number of them: the DSHS PTA award, India Association of Davis scholarship, the Woodland Healthcare Foundation Thomas Adney Butler Memorial scholarship

“In the process of applying and receiving these awards I learned about the stories of the people the memorial scholarships are for and the amazing work they have done for the community,” Saxena said.

One scholarship making its debut for the Senior Awards Night was the Officer Corona Memorial Scholarship, honoring the late Davis police officer

who was killed in January. Seniors Zane Schouten and Kleo Redd were given the award by Corona’s sister Jackie.

While Schouten was excited about the money and the contribution it will make towards paying for college, he also felt a connection with the memorial scholarship.

“I learned that I had a passion for working in law enforcement, as the loss of Natalie Corona meant a lot to me,” Schouten said.

Seniors take the Powderpuff win, again Senior women dominate in flag football game for two years in a row

The annual Powderpuff flag football game was held on May 31. The senior girls defeated the junior girls 49-14, granting the class of 2019 a two-time winning title.

Ever since winning the game last year as juniors, there has been pressure to win again. “A lot of girls felt more nervous for this game then last year’s because there was more pressure to win since we’re seniors,” senior Claire Williams said.

Senior Maya Doms felt the victory from the previous year helped her build confidence.

“The juniors had a lot of good athletes but so did we. We knew we couldn’t look past them but we were also pretty confident after the win we got as juniors,” Doms said.

Williams believed that team spirit was an important component of the game as they “just hyped each other up and made sure to go into the game with confidence.”

Doms also thought the strong team chemistry contributed to the overall win. “Our team was pretty close from the get go. We are all friends and peers and we all just wanted to have fun since the year is coming to an end,” Doms said.

But strong team chemistry is not the only factor to lead to success. The team was coached by past football team players Shaan Nahal and Jalen Rosario.

Their job was to make sure the seniors had fun but also to teach them plays.

“During practice we did a lot of drills just working on fundamentals. After we showed them all of the plays we were pretty much just trying to iron out some details and then we were ready for the game,” Nahal said.

Nahal believes that it was no surprise that they were the first class to win for two years in a row. “The players [...] they all had the spirit where even when everyone expected us to lose last year, they had the belief the whole time they were the better team. This year they had the same intensity and it showed.”

Junior Cate Lautzenhiser believes that the seniors won two years in a row because of the players as well.

What’s going on with graduation?

By JASPREET BATH HUB Staff On Friday, June 14 the DHS Class of 2019 will go through graduation on Halden Field at the Ron and Mary Brown Stadium, where the ceremony has been held since 2011.

The event will officially begin at 7:30 p.m. and is expected to last around two and a half hours; however, the gates will open at 6:30 so it is recommended to arrive early in order to get a nicer seat.

The seating is general admission, meaning first come first served.

According to the DHS graduation website “Saving seats is not permitted,” so big groups are expected to arrive together. If additional tickets are required they can be purchased at 5 p.m.. just before graduation.

In addition, due to the number of people coming, Oak Street will be closed and the North Gym parking lot will be reserved for disabled people. However, the St. James and Veterans Memorial lots will be available, but carpooling and

arriving early is recommended for a guaranteed spot.

The graduates must report to the North Gym by 6:30, however, family and friends are not allowed due to space concerns and group pictures are advised to be taken after the conclusion of the ceremony.

The night will begin with introductions and welcomes from principal Tom McHale, Bob Poppenga from the Board of Education and senior class president Zach Ringer.

Afterward, student speakers Lamar Barnes, Sophie Lopez, and Sithmi Jayadudara will deliver their speeches followed by keynote speaker, Will Arnold.

Then after the senior song, the diploma ceremony will begin.

Finally, after the conclusion by a recessional of the students towards the North Gym, friends and family will be free to meet up and take pictures with the graduates.

A DVD of graduation will be available for $25 on the Davis Media website until June 30, when the price will

Students are dreaming of graduation

By SAEBEAN YI HUB Staff Graduation ends an important chapter for all Davis High students, as they transition from a high school student to an adult.

Many seniors are excited to graduate from DHS and see all their friends graduate with them.

“I look forward to just seeing everyone for one last time and just having one last good day with them,” senior Thomas Venner said. “Especially since I’ve known them for so long.”

Senior Aakash Mishra is also excited for the graduation ceremony.

“School’s been fun, but I’m really glad to be done with school.”

However, the graduation lasts at least two

hours and the long wait to hear the school call your name can be a bore.

Junior Eli Vikstrom has two older sisters who previously graduated from DHS and had to attend both graduation ceremonies.

“It was really fun watching my sister and my sister’s friends graduate but it was really annoying having to wait the whole time,” Vikstrom said. “My last name starts with a ‘V’ and it was kind of a drag sitting through it all.”

But Vikstrom is still excited to graduate next year.

“Even if this is my third time going, I think it’ll be a different experience if I was the one graduating,” Vikstrom said. “I don’t think I’ll be that bored because

I’ll get to see my friends graduate together.”

Vice principal Amelia Hess explains that the the ceremony is so long because of its size. According to the California Department of Education, there are currently 569 seniors at DHS. “We try to prevent boredom by keeping speeches short and engaging and have live music,” Hess wrote in an email. This year, the DHS orchestra and the Madrigals will perform for the crowd and graduates.

Some students decide to combat the long wait by enjoying the speeches given during the ceremony.

“I don’t know who’s speaking but if it’s a really funny speech that would be entertaining,”

Mishra said. “I also hope the speeches are given by someone that I know.”

Senior Jerry Guo agrees. “It would be really cool to see one of my friends give a speech at graduation,” he said.

Most seniors who attend graduation plan to attend Grad Night, a “safe and sober, all-night graduation celebration,” according to the Grad Night website.

For Venner, this is very important to him because all the high schools in Davis attend this event.

“It’s cool because you see people you were close with from middle school who went to different schools like DaVinci and you get to just meet them again,” Venner said.

Senior trips are a great way to finish the high school experience before saying goodbye to friends and heading to college. Ayers believes they are popular because “it’s really fun to get away from Davis for a little, and since a lot of us are moving away next year it’s really great to spend time together”.

From poetry nights at the John Natsoulas Gallery to trivia and live music at local pubs, this small town knows how to come alive at night.

10 things to do in Davis before you leave

Seniors Alli Ayers, Kara Eilander and Brynne Fredricksen spent the day at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk and the beach.

Seniors are looking past graduation to plan what to do for their summer break before leaving for college.

“I’m looking forward to spending time with my friends and family before we go our separate paths in life and making the most of the time we have together,” senior Paulina Ngo said.

Senior Ben Bobell is going to Italy with the Madrigals choir. They will compete in

a singing competition and attend a singing workshop while they are on the trip.

Bobell is excited to “sing in a very historical place and seeing the Machiavelli statue at the Uffizi Gallery.”

Senior Danielle Bollinger has many things she’s doing this summer. She has planned a vacation to Hawaii, a road trip to Oregon and week-long boat trip with her church group.

“It’s an amazing week of fun and really personally important for my faith,” Bollinger said.

Teachers are also looking forward to fun.

Summer brings new adventures

“This a once in a lifetime experience. I’m super ex-

cited and I have to get in shape because of the hike to get down the canyon,” Van Muyden said.

Tim Groth, campus security, is staying to administrate the Davis Community Track and Field Club.

“Right after graduation until the end of July, that’s what I’ll be doing for those months. Then in August we start getting ready for cross country so I’m sticking around here,” Groth said.

Senior Vinita Saxena is staying in town for part of her summer.

“I plan on working summer camps and just hanging out with my friends,” Saxena said.

By AUDEN MARSH-ARMSTRONG Hub Staff As the 2018-19 school year comes to a close, many juniors are forced to come to the realization that many of the friendships and relationships they have built over the years with the members of the senior class will be affected with the upcoming graduation.

Many juniors are upset.

“I’m obviously very sad to see my friends go since a decent amount of my friends are seniors and next year won’t be the same without them,” junior Sienna Leavitt said.

To try to combat the sadness, many juniors try to remain positive about the situation, including junior Ben Busano. “I’m actually happy for my senior friends. I’m just trying to enjoy the time that I have left with them before they go off on a new

chapter of their lives,” Busano said.

Leavitt shares a similar sentiment as Busano.

“I’m very proud of them.

This is a moment in their life they will always remember and reminisce on,” Leavitt said.

Junior Grace Lapuz shares a similar pride for her senior friends. “They are gonna do great things and I’m always rooting them on in life,” Lapuz said.

The upcoming graduation is especially hard for juniors who are in romantic relationships with seniors and are unsure whether their relationship will last the transition. “It’s hard to predict whether I’ll be in contact with my boyfriend in the future, but for now I try to appreciate each moment with him since I know he’s leaving,” Leavitt said.

Staying in contact with graduates is not easy, but a lot of juniors are up for the task, including Leavitt.

“I plan on trying my best to keep in contact with my friends that graduate for as long as I can. It’s guaranteed I’ll be in touch with them for a couple of months but it’s very easy to drift apart,” Leavitt said.

Technology is key to staying in contact with graduates. Like most juniors who intend to maintain contact, Leavitt is utilizing social media such as Instagram, Snapchat and Facetime. “Keeping in touch through social media is easy in the beginning but eventually you end up growing apart,” Leavitt said.

A large quantity of DHS graduates who go off to college will visit their family and friends in Davis over college breaks. “That is also a great way to keep in touch, to see them in person,” Leavitt said. “I’m sad they’re leaving but I’m looking forward to them coming to visit next year!” junior Avery Begley said.

If you have not seen one of the Hayakawa twins on the Brunelle stage these past three years, you probably have not been to many DHS drama department productions.

Senior Jordan Hayakawa has been in every fall musical since sophomore year at DHS, most recently playing the lead Jo in “Little Women.” Her brother, senior James Hayakawa, has taken the stage for the past two spring plays.

With a mutual passion for performing arts, both actors will major in musical theater after graduating next week, but at different institutions. James will follow their older sister to Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., while Jordan will attend Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y. “We both found programs we loved. It didn’t happen to be the same one,” James said. “We’ll still keep in touch and everything, duh.”

The twins are excited about their musical theater programs, which required artistic applications as well as the standard academic applications.

“Most of the time you have to perform for them in person,” said Jordan, who was DHS drama board co-head this year.

James, who applied exclusively to out of state schools, noted that auditions can be expensive, especially

if a student needs to travel to campus.

Luckily, Chicago, New York and L.A. each invite 26 schools to Unifieds, a winter event that gathers the programs in a hotel and allows students to audition for multiple schools in one day.

“They try to streamline the process as much as possible,” Jordan said.

James and Jordan spent five days in Chicago before going to the L.A. event for two days.

“Most of the time everyone in performing arts departments are super down-to-earth and chill, so it was a really fun experience to visit all these places,” Jordan said.

Musical theater programs are small, typically with no more than 20 people admitted per school. Jordan keeps in touch with the 14 other students in her program through Snapchat.

“Also stalking these people on Facebook and Instagram, it’s very fun,” said James, who will have 22 people in his program.

When they get to college in the fall, the twins will take voice lessons as well as dancing, acting, piano and scene study classes.

“Sometimes they make you take technical theater classes, like the stagecraft class here,” Jordan said.

“Just to diversify what you’re learning.”

Similarly, James has a required class at Ball State called “practicum.”

“They basically put you to work first semester, as either an usher or working in the box office or backstage, which is good to get a different perspective,” James said.

In addition to studying theater, the Hayakawas will take the stage in their schools’ productions. After his first semester, James will audition for the next semester’s shows, and Jordan has auditions the first week of college.

“They use these theater productions as an extension of your learning,” James said.

A major that revolves around the performing arts will allow the twins to meld their passion with the classroom.

“This has been our extracurricular since elementary school, so it’s great to finally have this be our curriculum and be able to focus on it 24/7,” James said.

James acknowledges that the musical theater application and audition process was difficult, but that the effort was worth it.

“Pursue your dreams people. It doesn’t matter what it is,” James said.

Strutting into fashion

By MAGGIE WARREN HUB Staff Senior Klara Underwood is taking a unique route by majoring in fashion at Kent State. Underwood is excited for her declared major because it is, “creative and allowed me to explore avenues I found interesting.”

Underwood has always been interested in fashion.

Her mom claims that Underwood wanted to pick out her own outfits before she could even talk. “I was born with the desire to be the best-dressed person, but that does not mean that I follow fashion trends,” Underwood said.

Underwood gained some of her fashion knowledge through DHS. She took AP Art History her junior year, which allowed her to learn about the “artistry behind fashion design.”

That being said, Underwood doesn’t need the high end brands that designers create. “I love thrift shopping and finding hidden gems among the rubble of clothing others have vetoed from their closet,” Underwood said.

Not only does Underwood have an eye for fashion, she knows how to make any outfit better. She knows how to do alterations and sew, allowing her to alter anything she finds necessary.

Her goal is to develop eco-friendly clothes that are still fashionable and affordable. She hopes to, “reverse the harm that the fashion industry causes the environment as well as create innovative designs for the runway.”

Underwood hopes to create a fashion line in the future that will show the world her viewpoints. “Fashion lets me create a persona to express different sides of myself, or invent sides of myself that I wish I had,” Underwood said.

Smart saving to prepare for college While incoming freshmen are looking forward to the new experiences college provides, financial issues can dampen the fun. With student loans, housing and food costs looming overhead, college finances can seem daunting.

For the majority of students, going to college is the first time of true independence. New loans, bills and unforeseen costs can make this newfound freedom unduly challenging.

Planning ahead is the best way to ensure you won’t max out your credit card or see a negative bank balance by the end of the semester. Here is your guide to staying afloat during college: Begin saving money before you leave. Many high school students take up a job their junior or senior year. While having spending money is great, be sure to save at least half of what you earn. Keep it hidden away in a savings account or a piggy bank in the back of your closet where you won’t be tempted by it.

Find work on campus or nearby. Many schools have part-time jobs available all over campus. Similarly, most towns surrounding a college will have part-time work available.

Senior Travis Cosgrave is planning on working through college, saving half of what he earns. Senior Vera Resendez, who is currently employed, also says she aims to find a job when she arrives at college.

Try out community college. Taking extra classes over the summer at a local community college can give you an academic boost and help you save money. It is important to check with your adviser before signing up; not all schools give credits for classes taken elsewhere. However, community college classes are a cheaper alternative to some of the classes required in college and can help you get your credits faster.

Create a budget and stick to it. Before you leave for school, start tracking your purchases in order to understand a general breakdown of how you spend your money. While a strict and detailed budget can become cumbersome, having an outline of what purchases you intend to make every month can keep you in control of how much you spend. Breaking down costs into categories (food, academic, transportation, fun etc.) and allocating specific amounts to each section can help you stay on track.

Counselor Elizabeth Arroyo recommends that students start budgeting in high school, saying, “You realize how much money you spend […] when you’re in college it doesn’t come as a shock. You start practicing those things early.”

Using your meal plan is likely much more expensive than preparing your own food. If you have access to simple appliances, consider making one or two of your meals each day in your dorm, which allows you to choose a smaller, and cheaper meal plan.

Take advantage of your student ID. From museums to clothing stores to airlines, student discounts can save you a significant amount of money. Entering your student email address (.edu) or flashing your ID can give you phenomenal discounts at a wide variety of stores.

Don’t buy your textbooks new. While the majority of classes will require a textbook, a new book will set you back up to $300. However, used textbooks are just as good. Look online at CampusBooks.com or Amazon for cheaper options.

By JUJU MIYAMOTO HUB Staff While some students dream of staying in California, or moving across the country following the end of their high school career, a select few are traveling abroad to complete their education internationally.

Senior Jocelyn Chen is one of them. She has committed to the University of Toronto, where “I hope to gain not only academic knowledge but also knowledge and maturity that comes with the complexity of simply learning to survive in a new environment,” Chen said.

Chen always knew going to school in Canada was a possibility as she is a Canadian citizen. And although she is eager to attend the international school, she still “loves” California and hopes to return in the future.

Flying further from Davis, senior Sebastien Renaudin is studying in France. Renaudin is also a citizen of his school’s country and looks forward to

spending time with his family.

“I chose to go to school in France because I have family there and I wanted to spend more time with my grandpa all while getting a unique international experience as my classes would be in French,” Renaudin said.

He plans to graduate from University of SavoieMont Blanc with a “strong foundation in biology” to return to the United States and pursue a graduate program.

On the other hand, senior Ronja Keeley is taking another approach to traveling internationally after finishing high school. Keeley is taking a gap year in her education to work with a non-profit organization regarding rainforest conservation efforts.

She plans to work with the non-profit, Iracambí, planting trees and building trails while also educating the surrounding community.

She hopes to return to her education after her travels to study environmental science or policy.

“I also hope [working with the non-profits] will help direct me in exactly how I can have a positive effect on this world,” Keeley said.

Dreaming abroad at international schools

Senior Sebastien Renaudin worked at a biotechnology internship to prepare for what lies ahead.

Pansoy prepares for life as a midshipman in Annapolis While joining the military is a fairly unconventional post graduation path for most DHS students, senior Phoebe Pansoy always knew she wanted to join the Navy. This summer, she will begin her training at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. “Service is kind of a family tradition,” Pansoy said.

Her father also served in the Navy, and all of the men in her family since World War II have done military service, but Pansoy will be the first female in her family to serve and the first to go to a military academy.

“I want to work in Silicon Valley and get a six figure job.”

Pansoy strove to maintain a high GPA, got involved in extracurriculars such as sports and community service and began training to be as physically fit as possible, all to make her a strong candidate for the academy.

The application process started in April of her junior year with an application to attend a summer program at the academy. Pansoy was accepted into the summer program and spent a week there, learning more about the school and getting a taste of military life.

While staying there, one of Pansoy’s strongest memories is of the mock sea trials she and her squad participated in. Navy sea trials are a difficult series of drills and challenges that students at the academy participate in as a test of teamwork and other skills.

After the program, Pansoy’s application continued throughout the summer. She submitted documents, turned in letters of recommendation, retook her SAT, interviewed with an academy alumnus, took a physical fitness test, had a medical examination and turned in transcripts.

Pansoy also had an interview with a Board of Military Academy Alumni under Congresswoman Doris Matsui. From that she received a nomination from Matsui, endorsing her to the academy.

Then it was a matter of waiting.

Finally, on March 21, Pansoy was sitting in the DHS library when she got a call from Matsui’s office. She had received a fully qualified appointment, meaning she had been accepted into the academy with no conditions.

The culmination of almost a year of applying and waiting was finally over.

However, the work was in no way over. Pansoy had a massive pile of paperwork to complete and a workout schedule to adhere to until her arrival at the academy.

Most high school students have entry level jobs which tend to be low paying and fairly mundane.

Senior Preston Hubka is an exception. He got a job working construction for Mak Design & Build Inc. There, Hubka does cleanup, while also framing using a nail gun and other power tools.

The job experience Hubka has earned while working construction has given him insight to what he may want to do in the future.

“It has definitely opened my eyes to what I want to do and what I want to stay away from,” Hubka said.

Senior Quentin Javary will be moving to Amsterdam after high school to work in the music industry.

Javary got into electronic music when he was 12.

While constantly listening to music, he also began creating his own sounds and melodies. At the end of seventh grade, Javary began producing, working his way up to DJ’ing in ninth grade.

While the music industry can be challenging to break into, Javary loves the work. “The key is to just keep working on a new project that will put your name out there. It’s hard work but I love it,” he said.

Senior Ryan Liu found work at Teague Enterprises, which makes systems for research in cigarette smoke exposure, and Liu got a job helping construct the systems.

For Liu, his experience working there helped him figure out what he wanted to do. “It helped reassure me that engineering and research are fields that interest me. I realized I liked learning about how the machines worked more than the labor required to make it,” Liu said.

Grads meet their goals for the year

By LINDSEY SU HUB Staff Most high schoolers have a common goal in mind: to graduate. Although this is important to many, some students have taken it upon themselves to set other goals throughout their time in high school.

For senior Emma Nance, being social and making new friends and memories was a goal she wanted to accomplish. “It really is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I didn’t want to look back on my high school years regretting not being as involved as I could’ve,” Nance said.

Nance worked towards accomplishing her goal by participating in events and spirit days. She wanted to make lifetime bonds with her fellow high schoolers. Also, Nance made sure to join clubs and teams at the school where she could meet new people.

Senior Albert Chang has decided to focus on his wellness. He wanted to stay stress free and happy throughout his high school years.

While enrolled in several challenging AP classes, Chang says that he, “just [tries] to have a positive mindset going into every day.” He adds that this will also be important in college because he going to be in a very demanding environment.

In addition to keeping his mental health in check, Chang also set academic goals. “One of my goals was to get into college but it was not too hard to accomplish. I just knew if I put in effort on a daily

basis, I would most likely be fine,” Chang said.

Senior Jayce Tracanna also had multiple goals that focused on balancing multiple aspects of his life. “My goals were to be happy and to maintain a social life and keep up my grades simultaneously,” Tracanna said.

While maintaining good grades in his challenging classes, Tracanna attended many DHS sporting events with his friends to support the school.

Chang, Nance, and Tracanna all plan to continue focusing on these goals in the future. With their college and careers ahead of them, they believe that working on these goals, along with new ones specif-

This year will also mark the end of science teacher Sarah Ijames’ stay at DHS. Ijames will be taking a job next year at Will C. Wood High School after two years of teaching at DHS. “I’ll miss the students. The students have been really great,” Ijames said.

Ijames stressed that her motives for leaving were not due to problems with DHS, but rather they were financially motivated. Ijames cited that the pay for teachers at DHS is relatively low compared to surrounding districts and that the cost of living in Davis is “pricey.”

“She was really hands-on and would always do projects and stuff that would help me learn,” said junior Grace Lapuz who had Ijames as a teacher her sophomore year.

Lynn Liuzzi

Students will say goodbye to Lynn Liuzzi who is stepping down from the math department after 39 years as a teacher.

Senior Grace Shiffrin had Liuzzi last year for Integrated Math II. Shiffrin appreciated Liuzzi’s compassion for her students.

“She is a great teacher [...] she always wants you to do your best, which made me love her as a teacher.”

“She is super funny and will always go out of her way for her students,” senior Rachel Hedman said. “She is easily one of the best teachers and people on DHS campus […] I’m so sad to be leaving her and that she is retiring this year.”

Liuzzi’s compassion especially touched Hedman. “[Liuzzi] genuinely made me like going to math class— which was a first [...]

Ms. Liuzzi cares about her students success and understands a grade doesn’t define you,” Hedman said.

Math teacher Christian Iturralde is also leaving DHS this year. After two years on campus, Iturralde will be moving to Garden Grove in Southern California in order to be closer to family.

“I’ve been dreading this moment […] everything we’ve been doing I’ve been thinking ‘man this is gonna be the last time we do this,” Iturralde said.

Iturralde made a lasting impression on his students during his time at DHS. One of these students is junior Kaitlyn McElhern. “He always answers questions and it is obvious that he wants all of his students to succeed,” McElhern said.

Science teacher Darryl Bailey, who has been teaching at DHS for 24 years, announced that he will be retiring at the end of the school year.

Sophomore Marley Adler, a current chemistry student of Bailey’s, enjoys the element of excitement that he brings to the classroom.

“Chemistry is a hard subject, but he somehow makes the class so fun,” Adler said.

For Bailey, retirement is a bittersweet endeavor. Despite looking forward to it, Bailey will miss interacting with students on a daily basis.

“Who am I going to tease and have fun with for the next 30 years?”

Bailey said.

Not all of the retirees are teachers. Another staff member who will be retiring this year is head custodian Ike Collins.

Collins has worked at DHS for 31 years.

Collins is thankful for the experience he has had at DHS and the people he has come in contact with. “There isn’t just one memory, it’s all of the relationships with staff and students. It’s all one big memory, filled with friendships.”

Collins does not have lavish plans for life after DHS. Rather, he is excited to relax during his retirement saying that he is looking forward to, “doing nothing.”

English teacher Carrie Pilon is back in her P-building classroom. A little dust in nooks and crannies is the only remaining sign of a breakin that disrupted classes.

An unknown vandal broke into Pilon’s classroom, as well as the next door room shared by English teachers Jennifer Ramsey and Eileen Guerard on the afternoon of Dec. 27.

In Pilon’s classroom, the vandals broke into the fire extinguisher case and activated the fire extinguisher, spraying down the whole classroom. This left a layer of powdery light yellow residue that coated the whole room.

“It looked like the early snows of winter where you can kind of still see the blades of grass beneath but everything— everything is covered,” Pilon said.

In the adjacent room where Ramsey and Guerard teach, many items were stolen and a laptop was broken; police believe someone jumped on it. The items stolen include the projector, multiple chromebooks, as well as more than $400 of personal equipment belonging to Ramsey, including an Apple TV that she uses for teaching.

This incident caused Pilon’s whole grading schedule to be thrown off.

The irony for her is that she cleaned up her whole room right before break, to be able to spend time with her family over the holidays.

“I was looking forward to coming back on January 2nd and just leisurely grading the finals,” Pilon said.

But, with the room and the final papers covered with residue, she had to spend time cleaning and take the finals home later.

The clean-up process was long and extensive, and custodian Fred Marania spent two straight days vacuuming, wiping and cleaning everything that he could get to.

However, the residue is still left in places and the administration will be giving Pilon financial support for cleaning. “[The administration] recognize that it will take several hours for me to do deeper cleaning,” Pilon said.

The break-in also affected Pilon’s students as they recieved their finals later, and had to move the class to the library on the Tuesday after break.

Competition lets robotics students see how they stack up

By TESS MCINTYRE HUB Staff

The goal of this competition is to stack the blue and green blocks on top of each other in red area and balance on a bridge.

Four green and silver robots zoom around a makeshift ring in the robotics classroom, stacking green, blue and red blocks as a two-minute timer approaches its end. The goal: to balance on a bridge and collect as many blocks as possible.

The competitors count down five, four, three, two, one—and the crowd erupts as two opposing robots balance on a bridge at the last second.

Introduction and intermediate robotics classes are competing in an in-class Stack and Roll competition this week.

The competition is one of three in-class competitions led by teacher Steve Harvey to prepare for the official competition that the robotics team participates in in the spring.

For Stack and Roll, students were divided up into teams of two, and each team had to design a robot for the competition. They had eight months to work on programming their robots and prepare for the event.

“There’s no specific organized training, it’s more that students are given an opportunity to use what resources they have [...] and they decide how they want to compete,” Harvey said.

While Harvey does give the students workshops to teach them about coding their robots, the students are allowed to be creative with their building design and coding.

“We were also allowed to customize this time, so we added a lightup sensor,” sophomore Eva De La Peña said, displaying the feature on her robot.

One pair, senior Ishan Meher and junior Jenna Spann, faced last minute problems with their robot—named Dot—on the second day of the competition, but did not let the issue bother them. “[Our robot] has been acting up. We had it going really well, but the mechanism broke,” Spann said as she and Meher tinkered with a flat metal piece and screws. “Part of this is just about adapting.”

Student activists happy with new dress code

The Davis Joint Unified School District’s dress code has undergone a change for the current school year, leading to more lenient rules for what students can and cannot wear.

The change was approved by the Davis Board of Education on Aug. 2.

According to vice principal Kellie Sequeria, the DJUSD dress code was reviewed by a committee of administrators last year which led to the recent changes. District public information officer Maria Clayton said that the request to review the dress code originated from a school board member who wanted “a review of the dress code for any gender and/or racial/ethnic bias.”

The Student Services page on the DJUSD website and the dress code section of the student handbook contain the full dress code and state that the current dress code’s purpose is to “promote student safety and to create a respectful community that is welcoming to all students.”

This district-wide change has received positive feedback from DHS students.

Changes that stood out to students were that students may now have their bra straps or waistbands show, bandanas are no longer banned, there is no longer a minimum length for shorts and skirts, strapless shirts are allowed, and it is explicitly stated that clothing may not depict hate speech against any group.

Feminist activists pleased Feminism Club treasurer Maya Nunes believes that the past dress code was more strict about what female students could wear as opposed to male students and is pleased with the recent changes.

“Our dress code last year seemed to spe-

cifically target the female students and basically tell them you have to cover yourselves or you will face consequences,” the junior said. “I definitely think the new rules are better because they give more freedom with what we choose to wear and it seems to be a large step up from last year’s dress code.”

Feminism Club president Sophie Lopez also approves of the new dress code.

“We are in an environment where some parameters do need to be set, but less so, so that women can feel like they can wear whatever they want,” the senior said.

While Feminism Club vice president Catie Fee believes that the rule allowing bra straps to be shown pertains to gender equality in schools, she thinks that the elimination of required shorts length has less to do with gender equality and more to do with to with the popular styles of clothing.

“I honestly think that has more to do with fashion and trends just because the style of shorts now is shorter […] I think the shorts thing is more about what is the style and the norm now,” Fee said.

Fee, Lopez and Nunes all agreed that allowing bra straps to be shown is a step forward for female students.

“Girls no longer have to feel that they’re breaking a rule just for wearing a bra. Most girls feel it’s totally necessary to wear a bra to school and they should not be told they’re breaking a big school rule and punished for doing so,” Fee said.

“There will be bra straps whether you like it or not,” Lopez said. “Bra straps are a reality of life.”

Concerns about racial targeting Students from underrepresented ethnic groups also feel like the new code is fairer.

Last February the Black Student Union held a protest opposing the rule stating

that “clothing, backpacks, tattoos, and other adornment may not demonstrate or suggest gang-related symbols, or colors.

No bandanas are allowed at school.” BSU members charged that the rule appeared to only be enforced against non-white students.

“It seemed like the school was very lenient with having students wear bandanas, unless you were a student of color. Now all DHS students are able to wear bandanas, without being stereotyped as a “gang member,” senior Mohammed Mohammed said.

Mohammed said that BSU’s protest was a “key factor” in changing the dress code and that this change is positive for DJUSD because it “maintains equality.”

“In my opinion, if the dress code had not been changed, more problems would’ve raised,” Mohammed said.

Senior and BSU member Eli Mitchell also thinks the change is positive, and that February’s protest was integral in changing the dress guidelines.

“I also believe students will feel empowered by the dress code revision because they have now witnessed the success of a peaceful demonstration,” Mitchell said.

Though the dress code no longer mentions gang-related clothing in the student handbook or student services page, it is mentioned in DJUSD’s Administrative Regulation 5132.

AR 5132 states that “at individual schools that have documented gang-related issues (as verified by police), additional dress code prohibitions may be added. The principal, staff and parents/guardians shall specifically define "gang-related apparel" and shall limit this definition to apparel that reasonably could be determined to threaten the health and safety of the school environment if it were worn or displayed on a school campus.”

Huang95616 are referred as inter-disNo and 5 make up trict transfers (IDTs) about 7.7 percent of DJUSD. IDTs are primarily separated into two categories: “resident by employment transfers” (RBETs) and “continuing students.”

RBETs like Huang, whose parents or guardians work in Davis, make up 73 percent of Davis’ IDTs. Another 26 percent of IDTs consist of continuing students—students who have previously resided in Davis but are currently living elsewhere.

Once a student is part of the DJUSD system, they may remain as part of the school, even if they move out of the boundaries. The only exception is removal due to disciplinary or attendance issues.

Some families want their children to go to the well-respected schools in Davis, but can't live in the city because of the high cost of housing.

Whatever the reason, the number of IDTs have remained fairly stable for the past few years.

Some Davis residents complain about the financial loss of accepting IDTs, but this complaint is a misconception, say district officials.

It is true that families of out of district students do not have to pay a parcel tax of around $1,230, a tax required for all legal Davis residents.

These taxes are used to improve and fund facilities and services for Davis students.

Surprisingly, however, this does not equate to IDTs bringing less potential revenue to DHS. In fact, they do the opposite.

IDTs fill gaps in classes, which actually aid in preventing declining enrollment and keeping a stable number for core classes. DJUSD Deputy Superintendent Matt Best compares this to open plane seats.

“The plane would run whether the seats were filled up or not,” Best said. “It works the same way for schools.”

The district estimates that $8,400 of revenue is generated per student, based on attendance. And since the

Multiple news organizations reported last week that two Da Vinci Charter Academy students baked and distributed sugar cookies at school on Oct. 3 that allegedly contained the ashes of one of the student's grandparents. This three-week old incident attracted widespread media attention—with stories published from as far as London—and has also caused rumors and speculation to circulate throughout Davis.

The Davis Police Department initially helped the Davis Joint Unified School District conduct an investigation into the incident. Davis police spokesman Lt. Paul Doroshov said that the incident may fall under California penal code 370 for a "public nuisance," but that he does not "really feel that there was an intentional criminal act at this point."

This week, Lt. Doroshov confirmed to The HUB that the police have handed the investigation over completely to the district.

The district released a media statement on Oct. 16, but has not distributed any additional information since that date.

Da Vinci students were left to grapple with the consequences of the incident.

Five Da Vinci students that the HUB reached out to about the issue refused to offer information, either citing fear of punishment from the school or from their student leadership class.

A Da Vinci student who preferred to remain anonymous said many students agree that the incident should not be discussed.

"I believe [if] I talk about it, it will help the bad stigma of Da Vinci continue on. I would rather talk about all the great parts of the school that I love," the student said.

BDP squad revives under Tuqiri's leadership Cheering, chants and charisma.

In the student section of football games a group of students' voices can be heard above the rest. With recognizable cheers, original chants and handmade posters, this group brings school spirit to sporting events and keeps the energy up in the crowd.

These are members of BDP Squad, a recently revived club on campus, who lead the student section at sports games and aims to spread Blue Devil pride to all sporting events. BDP Squad was fairly inactive last school year, but it’s resurrection

want to do behind the scenes stuff but are good at getting people hype, so by making a simple poster, that’s their way of contributing to school spirit, even though they’re not the type of people to go out and yell cheers and chants,” Tuqiri said.

Inclusivity is transferred from club meetings to the court.

“We are working really hard to go to all the games that people typically don’t go to, and lead cheers that everyone can participate in,” Collier said.

BDP squad is mostly seniors and juniors. Senior Jazmin Roberts takes part in the club to have one last hoorah before she graduates.

“It’s senior year so I’m just trying to go all out at every event and make the most of it,” Roberts said.

Finding teachers who are qualified and exceptional seems to be more troublesome. Yet he believes the three new math teachers who joined DHS for 2018 are a good fit.

"I love our math teachers," Blackwell said.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, 48 out of 50 states report a shortage of math teachers for schools.

There are 13 math teachers at DHS to teach five periods of an average of 32 students in a class.

“It’s awesome to be here. It’s a terrific challenge to support all students across the academic spectrum,” math teacher Philip Raymond said.

Raymond formerly worked at DHS and returned last year when a math teacher could not finish the year and has continued to teach in the position into the 201819 school year.

“When they needed someone to fill [the spot of] the departing teacher I could come in,” Raymond said.

The number of teachers depends on the demand for the course as requested by students and the size of the student body.

The other new math teacher is Michael Wright, who teaches statistics and Common Core math.

While DHS has had little problem attracting math teachers, other schools have.

Part of the problem is that fewer college students overall want to be teachers.

According to a survey conducted by UCLA Cooperative Institutional Research Program, freshmen interest in becoming a teacher has decreased from 9.5 percent in 2006 to 4.6 percent in 2016.

Event raises $13,000 for wildfire victims

Paradise strong. This is the phrase gracing the back of the "Save the Music in Paradise" band festival t-shirts.

The festival, held on March 16 in the Brunelle Theater, was envisioned by DHS band director Thomas Slabaugh after the community of Paradise, Calif. was ravaged by wildfires last November.

Slabaugh knew Paradise High School’s band director Bob Schofield from college and invited him and the Paradise bands to play in a joint performance.

The festival featured band groups from around Davis, including junior high bands and orchestras, the DHS chamber and Baroque orchestras, the DHS symphonic band and Da Vinci’s Mariachi group, Mariachi Del Valle. The River City High School Big Band from West Sacramento also attended. The finale was a combined Davis and Paradise band performance.

The aim was to rebuild the Paradise music program. The event raised more than $13,000, mostly in $20 bills but with two $500 checks.

Additionally, more than 550 shirts with the motto “Paradise Strong” were provided to performers by Ink Monkey. The owner of Ink Monkey, Jason Steenbergen, also set up an online store in which people could buy the shirts, donating all the profits to the Paradise music program.

KHS America, an organization dedicated to enrichment through music, and Jupiter Band Instruments donated 22 instruments, worth more than $35,000. The group also agreed to provide just under $200,000 worth of instruments and equipment for a discounted rate of $40,000 to $50,000. Festival proceeds from DHS will help pay that

Since the fires, students from Paradise High School have been attending school in a vacated Facebook building in Chico. While the location has proved to be a challenge for some students, as they have to commute almost an hour to and from school each day, Paradise’s principal Loren Lighthall noted that the temporary location is the “best [they] could have hoped for.”

“A lot of the classrooms are just dictated by temporary walls we've put up in the middle of large open areas, and we’re fitting hundreds of people in a small, two story office building, so that's pretty tough,” Paradise student junior Greg Schofield said.

Though the set-up is adequate for most classes, the office space does not cater to the performing arts. A traditional music room, like the one found in the instructional wing of Brunelle Hall, has tiered seating and is soundproof.

Another challenge is instruments. Due to smoke damage many of the instruments and instrument cases at Paradise High were destroyed.

“We’re at a bit of a crossroads being able to find enough instruments currently to play, and even for the kids that are left to be able to practice,” Lighthall said.

But students have more on their minds than music.

“I'm just trying to be a pillar for other people,” Schofield said. “I've been thinking about getting rid of what clothes I don't need because we got them after the fire and other people still need that stuff, and trying to be helpful to my teachers who are stretched thin by the unusual conditions and being a good person typically.”

Added Lighthall, “School is the one place you go that it’s like, this is familiar to me, this is what I know, and there's a certain comfort level with that."

Students march to save the planet

The Butte County Fires began on Nov. 8, destroying most of the city of Paradise, killing at least 85 people and destroying nearly 14,000 homes. More than 50,000 people were evacuated in a 12hour stretch.

The fires also had an impact 92 miles south in Davis. Smoky air forced school in the Davis Joint Unified School District to close a day early for Thanksgiving break.

Many athletic practices were suspended or modified. Women’s soccer tryouts were pushed back one week due to unsafe playing conditions.

“The Athletic Director decided to cancel our tryouts for the week before Thanksgiving, pushing it back another two weeks until after Thanksgiving break,” senior Skye Shaffer said. “It kind of killed the mood for the team; everyone got let down due to having to wait another two weeks to get the season started.”

Families in Butte County were, of course, affected much more and are struggling to find everyday items for living.

DHS Link Crew, led by social studies teacher Bill Williams, led a donation drive for the families of Paradise.

“In one week we collected clothes, items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products and school supplies,” Williams said. “I was able to fill up an SUV. The roof rack as well as the interior was completely filled.”

Williams drove the supplies up to Chico High School.

“The ASB room was set up for Paradise High School students to come and get supplies,” Williams said.

Link Crew also provided the Paradise students with warm clothes for the winter, including old ASB t-shirts that were donated by Student Government.

Although Paradise High School is not burned down, all the houses were, so all the students are scattered at various high schools in the region.

There is an attempt to get teachers from Paradise in portable classrooms at Chico High so that school can continue.

DHS alumni and Chico State @dhshub freshman Ryan Benjamin @bluedevilhub was up close and personal with the flames and their impact.

“Over here it was extremely difficult to see anything when outside, and was not very safe at all [...] everyone was supposed to wear masks when leaving for the outdoors,” Benjamin said.

Chico State canceled all of their classes for the week before Thanksgiving break due to the hazardous climate.

“Obviously it’s nice to not have to go to class for a week, but you look at the situation in a different light when you realize the struggle that people are going through DHS acceptance into just to survive,” Benjamin said.

“I like that we all just have fun and don’t care if people think we’re crazy,” Collier said.

The group currently has about 45 members and is always welcoming new participants. Tuqiri says that BDP Squad is inclusive to all students and there is a place for anyone in the club.

The current sophomore and junior classes are larger than usual, leading to the increasingly crowded classes at DHS in all subject areas, but especially in high-level math and science classes such as AP Chemistry and AP Calculus AB. “The students in these large classes are not getting the attention and support they would normally receive, because the teacher’s time and energy is split across so many students. This extends outside of the class as well with things like grading,” math teacher Derik Birdsall said.

However, teachers aren’t the only ones suffering the problems that come with overpopulated classes.

Senior AP Chemistry student Aakash Mishra has felt the negative impact of larger class sizes.

“Being in a large class creates problems with class activities and focus of the class. I feel like a teacher can only do so much,” Mishra said. “Large classes seem to make teachers more stressed out due to the increased workload, so it[’s] hard to blame them for any mistakes made.”

The average graduating class is between 550 and 570 students, according to head counselor Catherine Pereira. The classes of 2018 and 2019 fall in the upper part of the threshold, where as the current sophomore and junior classes each exceed 600 students.

In some classes, including Birdsall’s calculus class, there are not enough desks for students, leaving them at the back of the classroom with no surface to write on.

The issue of large class sizes can be particularly detrimental to the functionality of lab classes, such as AP Chemistry. “...my biggest challenge is organizing labs where there is enough equipment… and the groups are small enough so the students all engage in the actual lab activity,” AP Chemistry teacher David Van Muyden said.

Though the DHS population has risen substantially in the past few years, there are other factors that have led to this year’s especially jam-packed classes.

“Years ago, we used to run smaller classes, and more of them, which allowed for more movement. However, with the budget constraints schools have faced in recent years, we have to run a tighter schedule,” head counselor Catherine Pereira said.

The school has not announced any plan to resolve this issue, but many students and teachers believe this situation requires attention.

The solution “is as simple as offering more sections of the impacted classes,” Birdsall said.

In 2008, 235 DHS seniors applied to UC Davis and 148 were admitted.

Last year, about the same number of DHS students applied—but only 72 were admitted.

To put it into perspective, that’s almost a 50 percent drop in just 10 years.

The statistics also suggest that the large increase in out-of-state and international applicants have hurt local students' chances.

UCD reports that the unversity accepted 17 percent of international students in 2018, a 600 percent increase from the 2.8 percent of international admits in 2008.

Senior Jonathan Li, who was denied admission to UC Davis but accepted to UC San Diego, was surprised with his results because UC San Diego is ranked higher on many lists.

“I feel like UC Davis probably wants more international or outof-state students because they pay more money than locals or in-states would,” Li said. “I know a lot of outof-states and international students getting into UCD with much lower stats.”

While students speculate, it's difficult to get objective information about why the number of in-state acceptance has declined. While California bans racial quotas for admission, the schools don’t have to justify who they accept.

The University of California system has responded to growing concern that the percentage of instate students at UC campuses is declining. In 2017, for example, the UCs adopted a policy that capped non-California residents at UC Davis at 18 percent.

Additionally, the universities consider “Eligibility in the Local Context” (ELC), which guarantees admission for in-state students into a UC if they rank in the top nine percent of their high school.

Yet the ELC guarantees admission to a UC, not necessarily one of the more prestigious UCs like UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego and UCD. ASB bookkeeper and DHS alumnus Mikayla Fregoso, who was accepted into UCD in 2012, noted the

Thayer says that if students cannot find the CTE courses in the catalog in which they are interested, they wind up dissatisfied with their DHS experience.

“I’ve seen it many times,” Thayer said.

“As a result of not finding the courses they want to take, students enroll in DHS but do not graduate.”

Pettigrew also recalls a similar situation.

“I’ve had a student actually quit DHS and move to Independent Study, after fashion [was cut],” Pettigrew said. “Because fashion is so important to them.”

As of now, principal Tom McHale is unsure if the classes will be replaced. “It is not clear if we will be able to offer these courses next year, as we consider our facilities, funding, and credentialed staff,” McHale said.

However, Thayer believes that enrollment would not be a problem for foods and fashion classes. “There are definitely at least [tens of] students who have a passion for these classes,” Thayer said.

Homecoming. Rent-a-Senior. Winter Ball. DHS Factor. Powder Puff. Prom. And, now, a game night.

DHS Game Night, a new school event planned by Student Government, will be hosted on Dec. 12 in the All Student Center.

Committee co-head Mar McCampbell explained that the event will have board games, collectible card games and electronics, like Xbox and Wii. “The purpose of Game Night is to attract students who usually wouldn’t come to other types of Student Government events, so like someone who would rather play Super Smash Bros. than go to a football game or something like that,” McCampbell said.

Senior Haitham Abualsoud has been in the Trading Cards and Games club for all his three years at DHS. The club brings different games—whether they are new to them or they have been playing them for years—to Anthony Vasquez’s room once a week.

“Recently the club has been focused on playing Magic, Lightseekers and Liar’s Dice,” Abualsoud said.

Abualsoud said that the club is trying to plan a student-against-staff card game and is excited to go to the game night. He believes that the night will bring the fun of his club to the whole DHS population.

“If I hadn’t been a part of this club, I’d be missing out on a lot of games and activities that have worked their way into daily life for me. I think this sort of game-sharing system is a great way to relieve stress and try new and interesting things,” Abualsoud said.

“Everyone is open to any game anyone is willing to bring and is real friendly,” Yubeta said.

Phoebe Pansoy, co-head of the committee, added that even those who are not avid gamers should come to the event.

“Besides obviously gaming at this event, students can also just chill and hang out with their friends in the All Student Center,” Pansoy said.

Power outage forces use of expensive alternative

Thanks to a temporary electric generator, DHS is up and running after the power outage that canceled school on April 8. However, this electric power came with loud noise, air quality problems and a heavy cost.

Until permanent repairs come to DHS, the district’s money supply is depleting at a rate of $42,000 a week—the cost of renting and fueling the generator.

This money drain could end soon, however, with new equipment installed over the weekend and the generator scheduled to be removed by 6:30 in the morning on April 29, according to David Burke, the district's director of facilities and maintenance.

“If all goes according to plan, all DHS power issues will be resolved and the generator will be removed by the start of school on Monday,” said Maria Clayton, public information officer for the Davis Joint Unified School District.

At a special meeting called by school board president Bob Poppenga on April 15, board members voted to approve the project as an emergency expenditure. That means repairs can begin without the standard bidding process of securing a construction contract.

Under Public Contract Code section 20113, school districts may approve a contract immediately “when repairs, alterations, work, or improvements are necessary to avoid danger to life or property, or to permit the continuance of existing school classes.”

DHS will need a replacement bus duct, which is an alternative to power cables used to conduct large amounts of electricity. The DJUSD estimates that this apparatus will cost $124,300 plus another $50,000 for time and materials.Some S-wing classes are just a few yards away from the generator, and teachers have had to deal with its loud humming noise and smell of fuel.

Schools work to meet mental health needs of students

There’s free tea and snacks in a cozy sitting area dotted with bean bag chairs. A TV screen runs a loop of wood burning in a fireplace.

Principal Tom McHale visited Gunn, a public high school in Palo Alto, during the spring of 2018, and was “very impressed” with its comprehensive efforts to improve the mental wellness of students.

“We are investigating ways to create a Health and Wellness Center at DHS where students can receive health care, learn about helpful resources in our community, and develop lifelong skills to manage stress and lead healthful lives. It would be a wonderful addition to our campus and assist many students,” McHale wrote in an email to The HUB. Gunn’s Wellness Center, which opened in 2016 after five years of planning, is available for students to visit throughout the school day.

Every student is allowed to request a pass from a teacher to take a 15-minute break during class if needed. In addition to the snacks and seating area, the center is also equipped with four full-time therapists who are available for students to meet with for up to 12 sessions.

“They put time and effort into making this feel homey,” said Gunn senior Rina Newhouse, who frequents the center, using it both for a relaxing location to spend lunch and for its many resources.

A recent graduate of DHS who asked to be anonymous felt the climate at school contributed somewhat to her depression and anxiety.

“It’s really hard to feel like you’re worth it all the time and you’re, I guess, good enough when the academic pressure is so high,” she said.

She was able to find support at school by developing a 504 plan with her teachers and counselor.

A 504 plan is an accommodations plan developed to help a student with a mental health condition. For example, the alumna’s accommodations included allowing her to miss school when her depression stopped her from getting out of bed and receiving extensions on certain assignments.

“My reaction was like, you can do that? I didn’t even know. I thought it was something I kind of had to handle myself.”

English teacher and club adviser Paul Dunlap says that agreeing to be the adult sponsor of the group was one of the best professional decisions he’s ever made.

ROCK aims to provide nominated and volunteer students with mental health training, allowing them to identify the signs of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues.

The club’s overall goal is to inform and empower students to create an overall culture of mental wellness.
