The Bluecoats Depend on Yamaha From Camp Randall to Lucas Oil, from the Rose Bowl to the Citrus Bowl, it’s no wonder that Yamaha is the most trusted name in the marching arts activity. Since 1984, drum and bugle corps using Yamaha have won an unmatched number of DCI titles, High Percussion awards and High Brass awards. This season, nearly 50% of all corps have a Yamaha instrument on the field. They know that if members can rely on their instrument, they only need to focus on the performance. Whether it be a brass or percussion instrument, a drum set or electronic keyboard, a speaker or mixer, a golf car or generator, more drum and bugle corps depend on Yamaha products than any other brand.

Each summer Bluecoats spends thousands of hours, travels tens of thousands of miles, and performs for hundreds of thousands of fans in pursuit of this unique thing we call the “drum corps experience.” We do this because we love our art, and because we feel strongly that the Bluecoats experience is a life-changing one.

competed in the WGI Sport of the Arts World Championships, making finals for the second time in our two year history; performers and staff from the 2018 corps traveled all the way around the world to represent the United States in the Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade in Hong Kong; and the 2019 Bluecoats took off on yet another 10,000 mile journey around the US with their latest production “The BLUECOATS,” featuring the music of The Beatles.

Year after year, the aspiring young performers who participate in our programming have life-changing experiences performing productions that amaze crowds the world over, and that make an impact on the artistic expression of our activity.

We directly reach students in Stark County, Ohio, the United States, and more than five international destinations. All of this is possible thanks to you. GENEVIEVE GEISLER OF BLUECOATS TO LEAD DRUM CORPS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S COMMITTEE “IN STEP” A budding global effort of Drum Corps International has a new leader in our very own, Genevieve Geisler. Recently named Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operations Officer of the Cantonbased non-profit Bluecoats, Geisler was appointed as chairperson of the IN STEP: Women of DCI Committee in September.

The IN STEP committee charter supports the participation of women in all facets of DCI and marching music performing arts by sponsoring events, highlighting women in the activity, identifying and tackling barriers to participation and leadership, and encouraging policy development consistent with the core values of DCI. Geisler was chosen as chair in part because of her role in the growth and development of Bluecoats, which has been a global leader in the performing arts education activity in Canton since 1972. Geisler holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Public Health degrees from the University of Michigan. She has been a leader at Bluecoats for more than thirteen years, serving first as a volunteer, then as Director of Operations & Finance, before assuming her current role as CFO/COO. She resides in North Canton with her husband David Glasgow and their two children.

Under Geisler’s leadership, the group anticipates raising awareness of women’s issues as reflected in society. IN STEP is actively working to increase participation of women in DCI activities at all levels as well as involvement in leadership positions. The group will also work toward creating new opportunities, recruiting performers and staff members, providing educational resources, and promoting a positive environment for women at all levels of the activity.

Kathy Black, DCI Board of Directors Chairperson,I said of the appointment, “Genevieve is a great leader to take [the IN STEP] initiative to the next level.” Geisler added, “We are excited that DCI has placed a solid focus on establishing a women’s initiative for the activity. As we continue to develop the program, we look forward to creating a culture that includes more and more women at all levels of DCI and even the broader marching arts activity.”

BLUECOATS INDOOR TWO-FOR-TWO WITH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALIST FINISH In 2017, Bluecoats announced the start of a second world-class performing arts ensemble called Bluecoats Indoor. The program performs and competes in the Winter Guard International circuit, a series of regional competitions held all over the world from January to April each year, culminating in the WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH. Bluecoats Indoor is a colorguard that performs a 7-minute production on a gymnasium ‘stage.’

The ensemble is designed by the same creative minds that bring the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps to live each summer.

After a breakout first season where the inaugural group finished in the World Class finals - a massive achievement for a first year ensemble - Bluecoats Indoor returned in 2019 with the production titled “The Gravity of Reality.” Amazingly, the program - which features performers from across the United States and Canada - finished in the elite WGI World Class finals yet again.

In 2020 Bluecoats Indoor will return alongside another Bluecoats-operated winterguard Artistry IN BLUE. Both programs will dazzle thousands of fans in Ohio, Indiana, Georgia, and Pennsylvania from January until they attend the WGI Sport of the Arts World Championships on April 1st - 4th.

SCOTT SWALDO Board President Scott has a long history at Bluecoats, dating back to 1981 season, when he began his involvement as a marching member. After a season as a member of the 1981 snare line and two seasons as drum major in 84 and 85, he joined the staff as a marching instructor and later served as tour coordinator, bus driver, and in a number of support positions within the organization. Along the way, Scott got his parents, Ted and Linda Swaldo, involved, and they managed the organization from 1984-1994 when the Bluecoats organization was propelled into national recognition.

In 2001, Scott relocated back to Canton and had the honor of serving as a member of the Board of Directors. In 2007, Scott was elected as President of the Board, a position he holds today.

Scott began his professional career as a Physical Therapist working in Columbus, Ohio for ten years. He relocated back to Canton in 2001 to join the family business, ASC Industries, a world leader in water pump manufacturing. Scott now is the General Manager of the family’s ongoing venture, Gervasi Vineyard, a destination resort winery located in Canton. Scott and his husband Jeff enjoy living and working in Canton while continuing to support Bluecoats!

MIKE SCOTT Chief Executive Officer Mike is an alumnus of the corps, marching for one season in 2011 before completing his degree and starting his career as the Director of Instrumental Music at St. Ursula Academy in Toledo, Ohio. Mike previously was the CEO at Rhythm X, Inc. in Dayton, Ohio for five years where he led their world-class percussion ensemble to several medalist finishes and a world championship.

He also began the first-ever world champion WGI Winds Ensemble at the organization.

His work in performing arts education has led him all over the world - judging events, giving talks, and performing in the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Costa Rica, Lithuania, Latvia, and all across the US. He currently resides in Canton, Ohio.

GENEVIEVE GEISLER CFO/COO Genevieve Geisler became the CFO/COO at Bluecoats last September, having served in the roles of Operations Director and Director of Finance at the organization for thirteen years previously. Her role includes oversight of the organization’s vast operations - tour management, foodservice safety and procurement, charitable gaming, and facilities as well as the management of Bluecoats’ financial operations.

Genevieve earned a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan in 2004, where she specialized in Environmental Health, including the study of water quality, food safety, air quality, and occupational health. She is an avid reader and home cook. She currently lives in Canton, Ohio with her two beautiful daughters and husband.

JONATHAN VANDERKOLFF Artistic Director Jonathan Vanderkolff has enjoyed a long and successful career in the performing arts, including serving as Stage Director and an original member of the creative team for the Tony Awardwinning production Blast!, for which he won an Emmy Award for Choreography. He has also been a designer for Emerald Marquis Winter Guard, Northview Winter Guard, Ventures Drum & Bugle Corps, and the Star of Indiana Drum & Bugle Corps.

Jon has also designed drill for the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps, served as Color Guard Coordinator for the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps, and won international accolades through the development of design winning programs for Soka Renaissance Vanguard in the Drum Corps Japan circuit. Jon is Bluecoats’ current Artistic Director and Visual designer: his vision respects the corps’ past while imagining – and creating – the future of drum corps design and choreography.

We’re so incredibly excited to announce that Doug Thrower is a member of the latest class being inducted into the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame!

Doug is the first person ever to be honored by the Hall of Fame for their work at Bluecoats. Doug has been a brass staff member

and designer for 28 years, bringing some of the drum corps activity’s favorite musical moments to the field. “[Doug] has consistently delivered some of our activity’s most memorable musical moments,” DCI Hall of Fame member Scott Koter said. “Doug will always be known for making somewhat abstract pieces accessible to the masses. His creativity was paramount in leading the Bluecoats to their first DCI World Championship in 2016, using a musical program that shifted the design paradigm for every drum corps show since.”

In addition to his ground-breaking arrangements in 2016, Doug is notably famous for bringing the viral sensation “pitch bend” to our 2014 production Tilt.

“We’re so incredibly proud of Doug and this honor and I cannot think of a more deserving person,” said Dave Glasgow, Bluecoats Executive Advisor and former Executive Director. “Doug’s creative input into our activity is iconic and deserves celebration. I’m so grateful to him for his 28 years of service and excited to see what the next 28 years look like!”

Doug’s induction will be celebrated at the DCI Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony which will take place during the Drum Corps International World Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana from August 7th through the 10th. The Bluecoats community will celebrate his induction at the World Championships Banquet on August 11th at the JW Marriott downtown.

NEARLY 50 YEARS OF BLUECOATS ALUMNI “ADOPT” THE 2019 BLUECOATS In recent years, Bluecoats has seen an explosion of alumni support as the corps has climbed to the very pinnacle of the international drum corps community. Through volunteerism, financial support, scholarship funding, and community awareness, this new alumni activity has helped to make Bluecoats an exciting place to be, and a more vibrant, supportive organization.

One exciting new tradition has blossomed from this alumni support - the Adopt-a-Member program. Each year hundreds of alumni sign-up to “adopt” members of the drum corps.

A committee of the Bluecoats Alumni Council, chaired by Bluecoats board member Chris Groves carefully matches alumni with performers in the corps based on their instruments, previous alumni matches, and interests. The alumni then become a support system for their adoptees - sending notes and letters, snacks for their ‘bus boxes,’ and even Christmas gifts for the corps’ annual celebration of Christmas In July.

“The Adopt-a-Member program is such an awesome reminder that the impact of the drum corps experience transcends generations,” said Chris Groves, Director At Large and Adopt-aMember committee chairperson. “I love spending time matching these alumni and the corps members, then watching friendships form across decades of Bluecoats members.”

Drum corps can be a rigorous sport, and the alumni and their adoptees lean on each other and share in the Bluecoats experience together. Some alumni go as far as to offer scholarship support of their participant. The program and all interactions are overseen by the Adopt-a-Member committee an the Bluecoats executive team. Ultimately, the Bluecoats Adopt-a-Member program is one exciting example of the vibrant community that Bluecoats creates across generations, states, and even countries.

Bluecoats has announced the 2019 inductees for the Bluecoats Hall of Fame as well as the 2019 recipients of the Bloo Ribbon and Unsung Hero Awards. The award recipients were selected by the Bluecoats Board of Directors at their most recent meeting in Canton, Ohio.

Iva Johnson, Kevin Stahl, and Charles Stewart will be inducted into the Bluecoats Hall of Fame by a unanimous vote of the Board of Directors. The 2019 recipients of the Bloo Ribbon Award are Errick Jose Prince and John David Mayo, J. Rhodes Millsap and Paul Todd receive the Unsung Hero Awards.

Iva Johnson began her volunteering and “guard mom” life in 1981 when her daughter Nancy became a member of the Bluecoats. She helped by maintaining uniforms, hauling equipment, and starting the corps’ first souvenir stand along with her husband Neil, who was inducted into the Bluecoats Hall of Fame 1990. She opened her home to members who needed a place to stay and continued her volunteering by cooking and serving meals on the ‘chuck truck’, sewing flags, and tailoring and cleaning uniforms. Iva and Neal were the first Bluecoats ever to be chosen as Drum Corps International “Volunteers of the Year” at the 1990 DCI World Championships in Buffalo, NY. Iva has continued to serve by working as a consultant with the Rhythm IN BLUE ensemble of the alumni corps.

Kevin Stahl has been involved with Bluecoats for over 20 years. He first joined the Bluecoats in 1996 as a member of the baritone section, he was section leader in 1998, and was the horn sergeant in 1999. In his age-out year he was awarded Most Outstanding Brass Performer, Most Outstanding Marching Performer, and Bluecoat of the Year. In 2000 Kevin joined the instructional staff of the Bluecoats and in 2002 and 2003 he served as the Visual Caption Head. Following a brief departure, Kevin returned to the Bluecoats visual staff in 2007 where he has remained ever since. In the more than 40 letters of support for Kevin’s induction it was often mentioned that he has played a vital role in the Bluecoats rise that now includes a DCI World Championship. In the words of former Bluecoats Executive Director David Glasgow, “Kevin was likely the single-most outstanding member and section leader I’ve ever experienced at the Bluecoats. His work ethic, commitment, and his ability to lead by example was and is unmatched.”

Charles Stewart Charles Stewart performed with the Bluecoats in 1993 as a member of the contrabass section and as the drum major in 1994 and 1995. In these roles, he was known for his tenacious work ethic and outstanding leadership qualities.

He received Most Outstanding Rookie Brass Performer, Most Outstanding Rookie Marching Performer, and Rookie of the Year awards in 1993 and the Bluecoat of the Year award in 1995. He served on the Bluecoats instructional staff under Doug Thrower and Dave MacKinnon from 1996 – 1998, and 2000. During those years, Charles was a mentor to many members, he helped instill the history and pride of being a Bluecoat, and he also established the Bluecoats Handbook for Drum Majors that is still used to this day. In 2011, he began work as the director and conducting instructor of the annual Blue Way Interactive Educational Experience that benefits hundreds of high school students throughout the country.

In 2018, Charles was also honored by the Bluecoats organization as one of the inaugural Bloo Ribbon Bluecoat Award recipients BLOO RIBBON AWARDS Receiving the Bloo Ribbon Awards, recognizing outstanding alumni from the corps, are Errick Jose Prince and John David Mayo. Mr. Prince played soprano with the corps in 1994 and 1995.

He has been a member of the Bluecoats brass staff for eight years.

Mr. Mayo was a member of the Bluecoats from 1993 - 1998.

He played soprano for 4 years and served as drum major for two years. He has been a member sponsor and a conducting volunteer with the Blue Way clinics.

UNSUNG HERO AWARDS Receiving the Unsung Hero Awards for outstanding contributions by volunteers were Jon Millsap and Paul Todd. Mr. Millsap is the Bluecoats Stage Manager and Associate Tour Manager.

He has helped over the years with the sets used in Bluecoats’ shows, with camp registrations, and assisting with serving meals.

Mr. Todd has been a volunteer driver since 2012 and has been a frequent volunteer on the food truck during spring training.

WE WELCOME MARCHING HEALTH With participant health & wellness at the center of Bluecoats’ focus in 2019, the organization announced a new partnership with Marching Health, an industry leader in marching health and wellness initiatives. At the center of this partnership, Marching Health is leading our 2019 participants through its flagship preseason conditioning program “The Ultimate Drum Corps Workout.” This 12-week program, done through the corps’ BluecoatStrong program, is geared toward improving visual performance and preventing early season injuries.

“BluecoatStrong began in 2015 as a pre-season workout and visual assignments program administered through Facebook Groups,” said Mike Scott, CEO of Bluecoats. “We’re excited to amplify this programming with the amazing work of Dr. Elliot Cleveland and Marching Health.”

MEMBER HEALTH IS A TOP PRIORITY In addition to the preseason BluecoatStrong workout programming, Marching Health will provide Athletic Trainer interns for the corps at Spring Training and as needed on tour. Dr. Elliot Cleveland, physical therapist and the founder of Marching Health, will also serve on the Bluecoats Health and Wellness team in an advisory role.

“After spending time with the Bluecoats organization this past summer, it was apparent that our organizations share similar values,” said Dr. Cleveland. “We both place member health in the drum corps experience as top priorities. We also are both innovators, and want to continually influence growth within the drum corps activity. Marching Health could not be more excited to partner with the Bluecoats for the 2019 season.”

BLUECOATS ALUMNI CORPS TO PERFORM FOR DCI AND BLUECOATS ANNIVERSARY! Bluecoats is excited to announce it has accepted an invitation from Drum Corps International (DCI) for the 2022 Bluecoats Alumni Corps to perform at the Drum Corps International World Championships Semifinals in celebration of both the DCI and Bluecoats 50th Anniversary! The organization will spend 2022 celebrating many events with its alumni and broader community. The DCI Semifinals Performance will serve as a grand capstone to a season of celebrations.

Mike Scott, Bluecoats Chief Executive Officer, is excited to see plans begin, “2022 will be an incredible year for Bluecoats.

The alumni corps is just one part of an ambitious 50th birthday celebration for this organization.” Drum Corps International Executive Director, Dan Acheson, equally anticipates a Bluecoats 50th Anniversary Alumni Corps, “We are looking forward to a great celebration and I just can’t wait to hear Autumn Leaves again.”

To orchestrate this exciting ensemble, Bluecoats has announced the formation of an alumni corps steering committee to embark upon creating a world class, high energy performing unit showcasing the talents of decades of Bluecoats. It will be no small feat to put an alumni corps spanning five decades on the field. Recent history has seen a number of massive alumni corps entertain the DCI Championship week crowds, the most recent being the Santa Clara Vanguard Alumni Corps in 2017.

“The bar has been set very high by those alumni units before us,” said David Glasgow, Bluecoats Executive Advisor and former Executive Director. “We enthusiastically accept the challenge to present a show that not only will honor DCI’s 50th Anniversary, but showcase how the Bluecoats have been a key part of that legacy too.”

TED SWALDO TO HEAD UP THE PROJECT Ted Swaldo, director from the 1980s and early 1990s has been named as the Chairman of the committee. “Organizing and executing a project of this size and scope will require detailed planning,” said Swaldo. The committee spans much of the corps’ history, and as Swaldo shares, “they bring a lot of varied and outstanding abilities. I’m excited to be a part of this!”

The committee consists of two other former directors joining Swaldo in Bill Hamilton and David Glasgow. Mike Scott, the current corps director and Bluecoats CEO will serve on the committee ex officio. Also contributing will be former program coordinator Larry Hershman, who brings experience in producing drum corps All Star corps from the 1990s. Rounding out the committee are Jay Wise, Jenn Johnson Renaud and Lane Armey, all three of whom bring excellence in administrative and instructional experience within the Bluecoats and beyond.

Details of the project will be announced in the coming months.
