This project uses a redesign of the 4th floor restrooms in Campbell Hall at the University of Virginia, as a testing ground for design methods which center human bodies and questions the stability of categories like ‘typical user’ and ‘average’ body.

“Disability” and “ability” are categories which, when accepted as clear and fixed, mask a range of shifting needs. Legalized design guide minimums like the Americans with Disabilities Act, while making important advances in expanding the boundaries of whose bodies are considered as architectural users, also allow designers to avoid deep exploration of bodily needs. The diversity found in human bodies, in their shapes, sizes, heights, means of mobility, genders, cognitive functions, dexterities, visual and auditory perceptions, needs, and desires is ripe with generative design possibility.

Pocket Doors

Pocket Doors slide into the wall keeping paths and toilet rooms free of obstructions.

Un-locked

from inside a toilet room, moving the handle of a closed door toward the up position unlocks it

Locked

from inside a toilet room, moving the handle of a closed door to the down position locks it

Rotating handle is a visual and tactile indicator of occupancy.

The lock only engages when the door is closed and the handle is turned in-line from inside the toilet room. The handle then forms a continuous line down the door both in and outside the toilet room, and the lock symbol is displayed

Door handle runs the entire height of the door facilitating opening and closing from many heights and angles

Overview

This project created an immersive sensory experience where visitors traveled thru several rooms witnessing a system of actions. The project used light, color, sound, humidity, and smell to intensify each environment creating an experience which was simultaneously familiar and uncanny.

This 10 hour portrait is study of drawing technique and communication. In each 2 hour session the drawing was left at a new stage of completion, maintaining the overall balance of light and shadow and communication of form while layering in new levels of detail.

Sited in the backyard of a home in the Randolph neighborhood of Richmond Virginia, the strawbale house project an experiment in design, construction, and use of local materials. The house was built without the use of power tools on site. The lumber was electrically milled, but from trees which were being removed from a local property. The project took a year and a half to complete from conception to the final coat of plaster.
