Winter Fashion

Layer up for the cooler months

Building a winter wardrobe is a welcome opportunity to get to play with layers and to have fun putting together all sorts of textures.

Think about introducing new on-trend pieces to the wardrobe that can be worn year after year, complementing items already owned.

A clear standout from the Autumn/Winter runways was the 70’s vibe, which has been reworked this time around to feature more modern shapes as well as an extra luxe feel. So expect to see plenty of pant suits in a wide leg with beautifully soft belted jackets, retro lapels, denim on denim, flared indigo jeans, fedora hats and lots of tan accessories.

Culottes are well and truly here to stay for another season and will make just as big a statement in winter as they did in autumn. So long as they have an A-line shape and fall at the lower calf, they will look elegant as well as fresh. Wear them with a sweater that shows off the fitted waist of the culottes and a pair of platform ankle boots or heeled knee highs.

Love them or hate them, turtlenecks are making a surprise reappearance in stores this winter! Fortunately, due to their mixed appeal and because they only really suit those with graceful long necks, there are also plenty of beautifully structured pieces of knitwear in luxurious textures out there too. These look wonderful with culottes, voluminous midi skirts and wide pants.

When it comes to the weekend, look for pieces that encapsulate the athleisure look, which cleverly combines gym with streetwear. It’s not as glamourous or blingy as the sports-luxe trend so is much easier to wear when transitioning from one busy weekend activity to the next. It’s all about adding in a subtle sporty edge to the look. Try wearing a graphic printed sweatshirt and luxury sneakers with a midi skirt.

The athleisure trend is becoming more and more evident in men’s fashion too. Mix up classic heritage pieces, such as blazers, cardigans and shirts with cuffed-at-the-ankle track pants, slim sports tops and puffer gilets. Texture plays a big part so look out for items in tweed and cotton and mix with neoprene, mesh fabric and nylon. Finish off with cool quality sneakers in a slim fit in white or a bright colour, or go for a retro look by opting for a vintage pair.

Winter Warmth Installing a ďŹ re pit

With the colder weather well and truly here, for most homeowners it’s time to abandon the alfresco area to spend evenings inside in the warmth. However, the installation of a fire pit, an emerging trend in outdoor living, is enabling an increasing number of people to extend the use of their backyard through the cooler months.

Put simply, a fire pit is a small enclosed area that contains an open fire. Available for purchase directly from the local homeware store, fire pits can also be created from scratch or landscape professionals will custom-design and build a permanent and more expensive feature. Some people even add them into the design of their new home.

With plenty of looks to choose from, the design of your fire pit should be mainly determined by its intended purpose and, of course, the available budget. Think about whether or not seating is required, the proportions of the backyard and if materials need to complement existing themes in the garden or house.

Pits can be made from glass, iron, copper, brick or stone and can burn different fuels, such as

wood, charcoal, propane gas or gel, with wood and gas being the most popular. The wonderful aroma of a wood-burning fire pit is perfect for that great outdoors camping feel whilst also providing an outdoor cooking option. Propane gas pits provide an unusual bluish flame and with the supply of fuel easily controllable can be quite large in size. They create amazing focal points with the use of non-flammable decorative materials in the pit itself, such as coloured glass or pebbles.

Whatever design of fire pit is chosen, it is important to make sure that it is set up and used safely. For example, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and contact your local shire to find out about any restrictions that may apply, including set-backs from boundaries. Also ensure the fire pit is set up on a fire-resistant material, such as concrete, gravel or brick. Once all the safety issues are taken care of, just sit back, relax and enjoy the wintery outdoors.

Imagine toasting marshmallows as the sun goes down, gathering around the flames with friends over a glass of wine or just enjoying being cosy in front of a crackling fire!

The Importance of Solid Foundations

The early years of a child’s education provide the foundation for a future life of learning. A shaky foundation could undermine their confidence in learning whereas a solid foundation will set them on a pathway to achieve their full learning potential. But what are the key factors to take into consideration when choosing a school for your child? Here are three important factors that should be considered when choosing an early childhood education:-

How will they learn?

A good early years’ learning environment is not completely structured and teacher– directed but leaves room for children to initiate activities and explore the world through play. This does not mean that anything goes whilst the teacher has a cup of tea. No! The teacher is actively involved in the play process, guiding and activating the learning. This approach is called play-based learning and it is important to get the balance right between playing and learning. When the balance is right, magic can happen.

“Research shows that children who engage in complex forms of socio-dramatic play have greater language skills than nonplayers, better social skills, more empathy, more imagination and more of the subtle capacity to know what others mean. They are less aggressive and show more self-control and higher levels of thinking.”1 Isn’t that the firm foundation we all want for our children?

What will they learn?

The early years are a wonderful time of investigation and exploration. Whilst it is important that children are introduced early on to the wonder of books, letters and numbers, research has demonstrated that too much of a narrow focus on literacy and numeracy in the early years has detrimental effects on children’s learning later in life. A good early years’ education will provide a balanced diet of learning about and through the arts, the sciences, physical activities as well as literacy and numeracy. Children should also be encouraged to develop their social, emotional, critical and creative thinking skills.

Where will they learn?

The physical environment in early years’ classrooms is vitally important to establish a sense of connection for children between home and school. Natural play equipment can also connect children with nature and help them develop many skills. However, the emotional environment in early childhood education plays a far greater role than the physical. An environment of nurture and care where every child gets individual attention to help develop their unique gifts is key.

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School Nurturing artistic talents

At Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School, students are encouraged to flourish, not just academically but through opportunities that encourage creativity, individual thought, expression and passion for the arts.

The outstanding variety of visual and performing arts options encourages students to think outside the box, work independently and to explore and express their emotions through different media.

This year, the secondary school drama students brought to life the story of The Jungle Book. For many students, the annual production is their first involvement in acting and performing on stage, allowing them to expand on their classroom drama experience.

School productions are a collaborative experience, not just for those who tread the stage but also for those involved with lighting, sound, stage management and music. Each performance is the result of a collective approach to learning.

Within the classroom, creative thinking is also encouraged. Recently, Year 8 students have been exploring expression through writing poetry during English classes. Generating original pieces of work through writing and self-reflection, students spent time in class penning their poems then decorated poetry boxes to display in the school’s quadrangle. In Year 10, students also embraced poetry through created Haikus in the form of a 140 character tweet. These ‘poetry tweets’ not only challenged students creatively but gave students a new perspective on an old art form.

Music is embraced from kindergarten throughout primary school as part of the curriculum with students able to learn new

instruments and skills from specialist teachers.

In the secondary school, music can be taken as an option and is one of the most popular co-curricular activities. With over 300 students participating in some form of musical activity outside the classroom, there are many ways for students to expand their repertoire.

Ensembles, choirs and bands develop teamwork and performance skills, while individual lessons focus on mastering technique and form, all of which are shown to full effect when the students perform at the City of Bunbury Western Australian Performing Arts Eisteddfod.

Students looking to expand their passion for visual arts can also join the after school Art Club to hone their skills. With an annual whole of school art exhibition, students are further encouraged to paint, sculpt and create works for inclusion that are celebrated with the wider school community. Year 11 and 12 ATAR students are also extended with visits to galleries and tutorials with professional artists.

There are many benefits to being involved in the arts at school. Students gain confidence from performing or exhibiting, discover the importance of regular practice and learn how to collaborate and work as a team. With a myriad of opportunities to be involved in the arts, every student at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School is encouraged and nurtured to find their individual talents.

It’s fascinating how simple everyday decisions can have such a large impact on your life pathway. I often wonder what I would be doing and what I would be like if my parents hadn’t decided to take my sister and me roller skating at 7 and 5 years old respectively. They simply thought it would be a fun little family outing but now as a 21 year old world class athlete, I think it’s fair to say that it has become so much more than simply a hobby.

It’s not just about the training and the physical side of the sport that keeps me going, it’s the entire lifestyle and countless opportunities that keep me wanting more. When I was 13 years old, I watched my big sister compete at her first World Championships and it made me realise that I didn’t want to be in the stands as a spectator. I wanted to be out there on the rink as well. Two years later, as a 15 year old high school student, I competed in my first World Championships in Germany. While I was sharing the rink with people from all over the world, and in the same venue as some of my idols that I had looked up to for so many years, I realised I had been opened up into the world and life of an athlete. It was the most exciting and thrilling experience and I then knew that there was no stopping me.

Languages are another passion in my life, in particular Italian, so every year for the past 6 years I have been back to Italy for either holiday, study or work. I’m also really interested in fitness outside the rink so I make time to run, go to the gym, do Pilates and yoga. People often ask me how I fit everything in but I follow a really simple concept; I’m only pursuing the things that I actually enjoy and want to do.

I can’t stress enough just how much my sport has given to me from many different perspectives.

Sure, it has given me friendships and experiences that will always be a part of me but it has given me my ‘spark’. It has taught me about motivation and the real worth of sacrifice and compromise. It has taught me how important dedication is and that practice really does make perfection. It has taught me how to be productive and that you really can make time for all your different interests and passions. I have learned how important it is to have ‘balance’ in your life. Sport is a massive part of my life and makes me who I am but by pursuing my passion I feel like I have got so much more out of it than my 5 year old self could have ever imagined!

Since then, I have been seeing the world (from Europe to South America and Asia) while doing what I love. I have competed in 5 World Championships and have been ranked as high as 9th place.

The decision to continue the sport at such a high level came entirely from within, of course with the endless and amazing support of my family, coach and all those around me. I still had all the same goals as my peers, to finish school with a high ATAR, to get into university and to start studying. I wanted to fit everything in and so I made it happen. I have just graduated from The University of Western Australia (BA Linguistics 30

Hyosung GV650

The affordable classic cruiser

South Korean motorcycle manufacturer Hyosung first came to prominence in the late 1970’s when it began producing motorcycle designs under license for the local market.

However, it was not until in the mid-1980’s, after establishing its own research and development centre in Japan, that it moved into mass production. Thirty years on and now owned by South Korean conglomerate S & T Motors, Hyosung has become one of the fastest growing motorbike manufacturers in the world with developed export markets in Australia, Europe, Brazil and China.

BMW 2 Series Convertible Rear-wheel drive soft top now available

It’s been a little over 12 months since the launch of the 2-Series Coupé, BMW’s direct replacement for the 1 Series Coupé, and quickly following in its slipstream comes the final piece in the range’s jigsaw, the BMW 2 Series Convertible.

As the successor to the world’s biggest selling compact luxury convertible (the 1 Series Convertible sold over 130,000 units worldwide), the 2 Series Convertible certainly has a tough act to follow but let’s not forget BMW has been doing this for a while now. The German luxury car manufacturer’s steady stream of stylish compact convertibles stretching back over almost 50 years are widely regarded as some of the most iconic cars ever built. Their heady mix of open top motoring, luxury and performance have long appealed to the discerning car buying public come rain or shine.

Larger and sitting closer to the ground than the outgoing 1 Series model, the 2 Series Convertible’s more purposeful and powerful looking stance adds a striking new dimension to the Bavarian giant’s smallest coupé. And, although it might be the smallest coupé in the range, the extra cabin space provides plenty of extra comfort and extra practicality. Some things don’t change, though. Unlike its main competitor, the front- or all-wheel drive Audi A3, the 2 Series Convertible comes with the traditional BMW rear-wheel drive set-up. In other words, as well as looking like a sports car, it’s designed to drive like one.

As with the 2 Series Coupé down under, the 2 Series Convertible comes with 3 petrol variants in the range, although there is no room for a diesel option at present. The entry level model

is the 220i Convertible, a four-cylinder in-line petrol engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. Delivering 135 kW of power and 270 Nm of torque, the car speeds from 0-100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds while achieving an average fuel consumption of just 6.9L per 100kms. Next up, the 228i Convertible extracts even more power from its 1997cc four-cylinder in-line petrol engine, delivering 180 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque. This results in a sizzling top speed of 250 km/h and a mad dash from 0-100 km/h in an impressive 6 seconds. Fuel consumption is not to be scoffed at either, averaging out at 7L per 100kms. However, for those that strive for even more punch, the top of the range M235i Convertible delivers in spades. With 240 kW of power and 450 Nm of torque, this brute of a car hits 100 km/h from a standing start in a barnstorming 5 seconds flat!

So what of the roof itself? As with all convertibles on the market, technology

continues to move on at a pace and the 2 Series convertible again raises the bar. Its newly developed, electrically powered fabric top with additional insulation takes just 20 seconds to close and can now be shut even while driving at speeds of up to 50 km/h. It’s also available in 3 different colours, the standard black, anthracite with a silver effect or in brown also with a silver effect.

With a huge array of standard features, including electric power steering, anti-dazzle high beam assist, adaptive headlights, parking assist, rear view camera, cruise control, climate control, hands-free telephone facility, USB audio interface and BMW radio, including iDrive operating system, the 2 Series Convertible is a worthy addition to BMW’s long list of classy soft tops. Mercedes-Benz B-Class Popular premium compact gets facelift

A decade on from the launch of the original B-Class and 3 years after the release of the MK2 version, the 2015 B-Class facelift has arrived to add an exciting new dimension to an already highly competitive compact sports tourer market.

The MK2 version of the B-Class was, of course, a significant step in the right direction for Mercedes-Benz. After a somewhat lukewarm response to the original model, the 2012 model sported curvaceous lines, poised looks and delivered much improved performance levels. Wider, lower, longer and sleeker than its predecessor, it took much of its design cues from the luxurious R-Class and featured a vastly improved cabin layout. It was also the first Mercedes-Benz to sit on the all new

“added visual impact and plenty of extra features as standard” chassis that had been specifically designed to carry the next generation of new MercedesBenz small cars. In short, it revitalised its premium compact brand.

Building on that success, the all-new 2015 facelift model offers added visual impact and plenty of extra features as standard. Its stylish new look features reshaped headlights in line with the current Mercedes-Benz design ethics, an updated front bumper with larger air intakes, revised tail lights with additional LEDs and a reshaped rear bumper elegantly housing the B-class’s exhaust outlets. Inside, the cabin has also had a makeover with all models receiving a larger, 8-inch tablet-style display screen together with updated, luxurious trims.

However, it’s the added standard features that really hit the spot. The entry level B180 now includes satellite navigation and push-button start whereas the B200 models add keyless start, a new improved navigation system, LED headlights, and blind spot assist. The top of

Attention Business Owners Are you SuperStream ready?

Payment of superannuation to employees is due to be paid 28 days following the end of each quarter. If you have a number of employees, this may involve sending payments off to a number of different super funds. Of course, this situation came about after the introduction of Super Choice, which allowed the employee to choose which super fund his or her super should be paid into. The latest change to this system is SuperStream.

SuperStream streamlines the way employers pay superannuation by introducing a common standard for payments that is completed electronically.

Basically, with this new system employers now send off a single payment for all current quarter super obligations and the clearing house will direct the appropriate payment to each employee’s individual super plan.

SuperStream for small employers with 19 or less employees starts on 1st July this year and while there are 12 months to get ready, the ATO is urging all businesses to prepare now in order take advantage of the benefits sooner.

30th June, on the other hand, marks the date for when medium to large employers (those with 20 or more employees) must be SuperStream ready. These employers should already have an implementation plan in place.

The ATO is asking employers to speak to their service provider, whether that is their accountant, bookkeeper, payroll provider or super fund, to ensure they are SuperStream ready on their behalf.

For employers, it’s about cutting red tape by making all super payments electronic and introducing a standard way to pay

contributions. Paying super can be fairly complex with many employers making contributions to multiple super funds, each with their own requirements. With SuperStream, all super contributions are treated in the same way, resulting in a simpler and more consistent method for employers.

My view is that this is a positive step and will offer greater control with super payments.

Some employers overlook paying super obligations on time and there are serious consequences for this. With most going undetected due to a lack of effective controls, the introduction of SuperStream will overcome this and late super payments should now be picked up and penalties imposed on late payers.

Epidermal Levelling, also referred to as Dermaplaning or Blading, is an exfoliation procedure designed to assist in the skin’s natural exfoliation process. The procedure smoothes the complexion and eliminates fine lines leaving the skin immediately smooth, supple and vibrant. This innovative technique carefully removes the outermost layers of dead skin cells, ridding the face of the dead skin and ‘peach fuzz’ that can trap dirt and oils, allowing new skin to appear and brightening the complexion.

A safe and effective treatment that improves the texture and tone of the skin, Epidermal Levelling reduces fine lines and facial hairs and improves the absorption of both treatment and at-home-use products. This procedure involves the use of a patented blade that works by removing surface dead skin cells and fine down-like hair on the face that make it difficult for products to penetrate, aiding the smooth application of makeup.

With no pretreatment required, the treatment is ideal for a last minute procedure. What is the 80:20 rule?

80:20 is a simple formula for healthy living and it applies to the Food/Exercise theory and also the Acid/Alkaline theory of food intake.

Instead of focusing on technical, rigid exercise regimes and counting grams, kilojoules and macros, you focus on the percentage and overall quality and quantity.

Remember the 80:20 rule also applies to being balanced and realistic about food, so be good 80% of the time!

ACID/ALKALINE FOODS To maintain good health, your blood must be slightly alkaline with a pH of 7.35 to 7.45. Foods can be alkaline, acidic or neutral in your body. Some foods, such as lemons that taste bitter or acidic actually have an alkalising effect once metabolised.

As always, balance is the key. An acidic body will have decreased vitamin and mineral absorption, energy production, cell repair, detoxification of heavy metals, enable tumour cells to thrive and contribute to fatigue and chronic illness. To maintain health and vitality, meals should ideally be made up of 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods.

Alkaline forming foods include most fruits, green vegetables, peas, beans, lentils, spices, herbs and seasonings, seeds and nuts. Acid forming foods include meat, fish, poultry, eggs, grains and legumes. Eat slowly and chew your food well to help stimulate the enzymes needed for digestion.

DIET/EXCERCISE The saying “You can’t out-exercise a bad diet” is an old but true statement! I often see people dedicated to their exercise, slogging it out daily in the gym and still not losing weight. It is their diet that is preventing them from achieving their weight loss and health goals. Apply the 80:20 rule to food and exercise logic so that you are putting 80% of your effort into eating well and 20% of it into keeping fit.

Commit to training on at least 80 per cent of the days each week (that’s 5 days a week). A good tip is to not schedule “treat” meals and exercise-free days on the same day. All in all, the 80:20 rule works as an eating philosophy because it’s unrealistic and demotivating to think you can never enjoy your favourite foods in order to lose weight and keep it off. With this approach there should be no guilt associated with enjoying your life.

When someone slips up on a strict diet they often adopt the mindset of, “Oh well, I may as well eat bad food for the rest of the day.”

However, the 80:20 rule is all about guilt-free moderation, which is a realistic long-term approach.

Finding a Lump on Your Dog When should you worry?

When anyone finds a lump on their pet, unsurprisingly many will fear the worst. Thoughts will turn to whether it is cancerous and whether there anything that can be done.

When I first graduated 15 years ago, cancer treatment in pets was still in its infancy. Most vets’ advice was to “keep an eye on it and we’ll take it off if it gets bigger”, or the news could be worse, “your dog has cancer and there’s nothing we can do”.

Thankfully, our knowledge of cancer in pets has increased dramatically in recent times and the days of being unable to do anything about it are long gone.

The first and most important thing when it comes to dealing with a lump is to act quickly. By swiftly treating the problem the growth can be removed much more easily as obviously the smaller the lump, the quicker and less intrusive the surgery.

Plus, if it is malignant, it’s important to remove it before it spreads. Waiting to see if the lump gets any bigger just means it becomes harder to remove, which could also mean the chance to cure the dog is missed.

Fortunately, most of the lumps we see on dogs are benign so usually all that is required is to perform a simple test to confirm what type of growth it is and then monitor what it does. This test involves using a needle to remove cells before examining them under a microscope.

This test can be done during a normal consultation.

For malignant lumps, which may have spread or are locally very aggressive, there are now many more options. More often than not if the lump is in a favorable position, such as over the chest or belly, the dog can 52

be cured with surgery if treated early. Even in situations where the lump is in a difficult position, such as on a leg or on the face, it is normally possible to control the cancerous growth with daily medication even if it has not been completely removed.

If you have found a lump on your pet, please contact your vet immediately. Although most owners will be worried about what the outcome may be, with early vet attention it is often possible to treat the pet successfully.

Having been in business for 26 years and not being the holder of any business degree, diploma or Batchelor of anything, I am a fervent believer in the power of self-motivation. Learn what you need to achieve by simply setting your mind to it. Most humans can be trained to do almost anything and get the certificate to say just that. My question is, “But how good are they at that…anything?”

I once employed a 3 yeartrained and qualified chef and the experience was neither pleasant nor tasty. The best cooks I have employed have been those with a passion for good food, are intuitive, have objective taste buds and a love of working in kitchens and creating amazing delights. It’s what I call “the feel for food”. It’s not about giving yourself the title of “Chef” but more about immersing yourself in the craft of cooking, continually honing your skills and loving to learn more.

Many young people these days have aspirations and dreams of greatness. It’s a wonderful thing to hear talk of the exciting careers they want to work towards. What troubles me, though, is the belief that quality careers can only be obtained through a university degree or years of study and academia. The attitude is being ingrained into some sectors of our society that if you have a degree you will be assured of a fulfilling job with a great title. And if you don’t, well er… sorry…fail.

I have employed many fantastic staff who have worked and supported themselves financially in the hospitality industry, travelled and gained valuable life experiences along the way but still have a sense of under achievement because they don’t have higher education qualifications to their name.

It seems that no one is happy doing the menial work anymore, starting from the bottom and working their way up. We are losing our labourers and trade skills because everyone wants to be the supervisor. No one wants to dig the ditches; they want to design the ditches. Practical skills are being undervalued.

My father was born in 1913, in an era when boys left school at 14 or 15 to work. He and his three older brothers all went on to become articulate, educated and well-read men, operating farms and businesses successfully.

They learnt what they needed to know as they went along, always hungry for experience and knowledge. I suppose it was the era of self-made men and women because they had no other choice.

Today’s easier access to education and higher standard of living doesn’t necessarily mean a more appreciative or wiser generation.

So, to sum up, I am a champion for those who concern themselves more with how well they do their job rather than what their title is. As my mother used to say, “If you are going to do something, do it well and do it properly.” Even if she was only talking about drying the dishes!

Winter Recipe

Thai Green Curry Meatballs This is a new take on a classic Thai dish and it works just as well with minced lamb or beef.

Ingredients Serves 4-6 Meatball mixture 500g minced chicken ½ cup breadcrumbs ½ cup desiccated coconut salt and pepper to taste oil for frying Sauce 1½ tbsp Thai green curry paste 1 tbsp fish sauce 1 tsp palm sugar 400ml can coconut milk 1 zucchini, sliced

Method

In a large bowl, mix together all the meatball mixture ingredients.

Roll the mixture into small balls about 2.5cm in diameter. The mixture should make approximately 25 meatballs.

Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a frying pan over a medium heat.

Fry the meatballs in batches until they are sealed. Do not cook them completely. Remove meatballs from the pan and keep warm.

Add the curry paste to the pan and fry for 1 to 2 minutes or until fragrant.

Add the fish sauce and palm sugar and mix with the paste.

Pour in the coconut milk.

Add the zucchini and then add the meatballs.

Lower the heat and gently simmer for up to 15 minutes or until the sauce has reduced and the zucchini and meatballs are cooked through.

While simmering, carefully spoon the coconut sauce over the meatballs and gently stir from time to time.

Serve with rice and chopped coriander leaves.

Winter Reds

When the conversation turns to Donnybrook, apples immediately come to mind but it’s not just the apples that grow well in the areas surrounding this quaint little town. Grapes seem to thrive in this hilly and fertile area just as well.

One producer that has been growing grapes incredibly successfully for a while now is Smallwater Estate. Take a drive heading west through Donnybrook and situated just outside the town, in Newlands, is John Small’s delightful vineyard.

I recently had a look at a few of his wines and to no surprise they were fantastic, in particular his reds.

The 2012 Rob’s Block Cabernet Sauvignon is a deep, rich and discerning wine with aromas of forest berries, cassis and cake spice. The wine has a deep mouth presence with a cocoa and lengthened mocha pan, ripe fruit and a textural fine tannin finish. A perfect wine for those slow winter braises that we have been waiting all summer for.

The first thing you notice about the 2013 Shiraz is the gold medal laden package and as I found out, through my own tasting, these are accolades that are rightfully deserved. The Shiraz is a vibrant shade of purple with big ripe plum, cardamom and aromatic spices leaping out of the glass. The Shiraz has a real vibrancy on the palate, filling the mouth with ripe red berries, plums and a seamless lengthy tannin

profile. This bold discerning wine is a style that is very much approachable now and will reward for many years to come.

For those really cold nights, Smallwater also has you covered with a warming vintage port made from Zinfandel. The 2012 Zinfandel vintage port is a fine expression of a fortified wine, capturing the labour of love from the harvest. With raisin, currant and nutmeg aromas with a full mocha and a Christmas cake mouth feel, the port has a lengthy, lightly sweet, yet balanced finish. A perfect accompaniment to some local cheese.

Next time you find yourself out Donnybrook way make sure you stop in at Smallwater, not just for a glass of stunning wine, but also to sample a local delicacy. Marron is also farmed on the property and various marroninfluenced dishes can be enjoyed in the winery’s fabulous little restaurant with views overlooking the vineyard located next to the cellar door.

Let’s hope you all have a warm winter filled with good food and hearty Geographe red wines.

Miner engineer and co-owner Adrian Jones said, “The Barton Jones cellar door is built entirely out of rendered straw bales in a passive solar design. Our aim was to provide a building sympathetic to the environment whilst offering a quality venue for the community to showcase local produce and visitors to enjoy our wines. We’re very excited about it.”

Viticulturist and co-owner Jackie Barton commented, “We have been building the Barton Jones cellar door over the past three years, doing much of the work either ourselves or with the help of local contractors. Three years of dedicated building work has given the proud owners a distinctive, one-of-a-kind cellar door and a unique food and wine facility in the heart of the Geographe wine region. Initially open for wine tastings and sales, future plans include serving food platters, featuring local produce and the hosting of a number of food and wine based events throughout the year. A regular exhibitor at Vineyard 28, Chapman is an artist who works in oils, watercolours, acrylics and pastels although her textile art pieces are becoming increasingly well known in quilting circles. Just recently, she finished in the top 4 out of 35 entries at the 2015 Australasian Quilt Challenge with her textile piece entitled ‘True Blue Mates’, a challenge that required quilt artists to interpret the theme, True Blue. Receiving an ‘Honourable Mention’, her work was awarded the Viewer’s Choice award at the Melbourne exhibition. Her work will now tour Australia and New Zealand at various quilt shows for the next 12 months. Chapman was also a finalist in the 2014 Australasian Quilt Challenge with a piece titled ‘Hang Ten’ and has also previously won awards for other textile work at the Western Australian Quilt Exhibition.

Chapman Hill-based Whicher Ridge is celebrating another award having just picked up Best Small Cellar Door in the Geographe wine region in the April/May edition of Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine. Taking into account the overall cellar door experience for visitors, the magazine has had a team of leading wine writers traversing the country visiting different wine regions and determining the leading cellar doors, both large and small, the best tasting experiences and best food experiences.

The results of this search, including a full list of reviews, have been published in the current edition.

Whicher Ridge’s cellar door opened 18 months ago and scored highly with its combination of wine sensory garden, quality of wines, selection of farm produce and farmhouse pantry products available for sale and quality of service. Evolving from a dream to grow and market marron into a contract wine growing yard, owner John Small has established a thriving winery famous for its premium Zinfandel grapes and award-winning wines. In addition to his trademark Zinfandel, John has planted further quality Chardonnay and Shiraz vines and the winery has also become well known for its award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon Rob’s Block, planted on and named after the pet block of John’s late wife Robyn.

The property, with its stunning vista overlooking picturesque dams and marron ponds, combines both aquaculture and viticulture principles, ensuring that the vineyard is both free from pesticides and environmentally friendly in order to maintain the integrity of the wetland.
