“THE GREATEST GLORY IN LIVING LIES NOT IN NEVER FALLING, BUT IN RISING EVERY TIME WE FALL.” - NELSON MANDELA

Sharing Our Amber Mansfield

Escapades Producer, Brandywine Living at Brandall Estates

COVID made me realize how strong we really are together. All the different tasks that this pandemic has added onto our plates gave me more insight into each and every position at Brandall Estates. Serving food helped me understand residents’ dining needs. Making beds helped me realize that detail is key when caring for someone. And, working together and staying positive is always the answer. Working through the pandemic with such an awesome team has really proved to me that the saying “It takes a village” is 100% true. I love my village and have grown even closer to my teammates.

Kristen Peto

Concierge, Brandywine Living at Wall Although COVID and “lockdown” was a difficult time, as a Concierge I felt I had a crucial role in being the first point of contact for our families and our residents. Being able to be the one to relay a message, deliver a package, or just keep everyone updated and comfortable with everything going on in a compassionate and caring way actually helped ME get through this time. Being a member of the Wall community and seeing the camaraderie among everyone from team leaders and coworkers that is portrayed here made this experience that much easier to handle.

Jarvis Lymon

Dining Assistant, Brandywine Living at Haddonfield COVID taught me to be more compassionate about individual needs and overall health. I helped everyone with their daily job functions and I made sure that everything was clean and sanitized. I am proud of that. During the pandemic, my co-workers ensured that I was able to make it to and from work every day. There are too many staff members that have helped the community (and helped me) and I can’t thank them enough!

would love to hear your story.

COVID Stories The Brandywine Haverford Estates’ Team & Ian Monteith (Executive Director)

Ian Monteith

Executive Director, Brandywine Living Haverford Estates It seems odd to say things like “that’s how we did things in 2019.” The math tells us that it has only been three years, but our experiences, our thought processes, and our outlooks make us feel that it has been far longer than that. Although COVID has impacted me on a personal level as a husband and a father, I have been most impacted as a healthcare professional. Three long years ago, my job was to provide the best quality of life that I could for each of my residents in a safe and secure environment. In retrospect, those days seem almost like a golden age because once COVID reared its ugly head, everything, and I do mean everything, changed. Inevitably, COVID caught up with us in late May during that first year, and it came at us like gangbusters. Every time I turned around, we had another positive resident or staff member. I lived in the community for five weeks, not only to shield my family from potential exposure, but also because I was afraid of leaving my Brandywine family alone in the dark. I’m not sure how much I slept in May or June in 2020, but I know it wasn’t much. At some point, as the immediate crisis began to pass, I realized something about the journey on which I found myself. I was still an advocate and an educator, but I was something more—I was the person scaling the mountain, striving to protect the Brandywine residents and staff from something that was truly insurmountable. It occurred to me that as a community, we were closer for having been through this together, and I was more appreciative of all the wonderful moments during the day, no matter how small, that previously I had taken for granted. Our team was right there with me. Whether it was Janis, concierge of twenty-two years, holding the line at the front door, the management team working the tray line every breakfast, lunch, and dinner for room service, the people by whom I am so blessed to be surrounded never faltered. As we stand here in 2022, I pray and I hope that we are drawing to the end of our COVID story. As I look back over the past three years and ask myself how COVID has impacted me, the answer is simple:

I am a better human being for it. I am more compassionate. I am stronger. I am more grateful for those around me. I am far more likely to laugh at the smallest thing.

Spotlighting Our Leonardo “Leo” Tejada

Chef - Brandywine Living at Princeton How did you get started with Brandywine?

e

My first day at Brandywine Living at Princeton was November 28,2001. I remember the date as if it were yesterday! A family friend referred me to Brandywine when there was an opening for a full time server. Without hesitation, I joined the Princeton dining team. Now fast forward 20 plus years later and here I am. Proud to be a chef!

How did you discover that you wanted to be a chef? Where has cooking taken you in your career? I’ve had a number of roles in the dining department. I have been a server, worked on the prep line, sous chef, and line chef. I have a passion for cooking which began as a small boy, cooking beside my mom in the kitchen. My specialty dish for our residents is salmon cooked several different ways! From seared, grilled, baked, or broiled, they just love it! Born in the Dominican Republic, I love cooking Latin cuisine. My other specialty is Sancocho (a delicious Caribbean meat and vegetable stew). This is the most cherished dish of the Dominicans and is usually made for special occasions.

Have you always worked in assisted living? For the past 20 years, I’ve had the pleasure of delighting our residents with home-cooked meals.

Tell us something exciting happening in your life right now, outside of work. When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have three beautiful daughters (Crystal, Angie and Libby), five handsome grandsons, and one beautiful granddaughter.

Gratitude & W ords from Dear Marie, Nicholas, Nicole, and Staff: We wanted to thank you and all your staff at Brandywine Mountain Ridge for the wonderful care you showed our mother, Wilma Zielinski, during her time with you. Although we miss her and mourn her loss, we are thankful for her long life and love. We sincerely appreciate your attentiveness to her needs, especially during her last few months. You know that Wilma did not want to leave her home; she fought to be on her own until health issues forced us to make the choice for her. As much as she fought it, she was happy, and for our peace of mind, safe, at Brandywine. We had wanted to bring her here to Texas so we would be closer. She insisted on staying in New Jersey. For her birthday #103, the staff arranged for Mom to have a zoom birthday party. Her friends and family zoomed in to sing her happy birthday and chat, while she ate her cake. We are not sure she knew what was going on, but it meant the world to us.

Nicole Gates (Director of Community Relations) & Wilma at Brandywine Mountain Ridge

And our thanks to your nursing staff who gave us constant updates and happily answered any questions we had. Please express our gratitude to all. You have an amazing, caring group of people. We are grateful to all of you.

Dear Ms. Bacon, This is a quick note to let you know how pleased we are with Brandywine Living at Longwood. My sister, Linda Green, became a resident at Longwood on September 12, 2021. Although she has only been there a little over three months, her family thinks that Paola Fusaro and her staff have created a cheerful environment and we find everyone is attentive and compassionate. We particularly like the fact that you seem to be able to retain the staff and the staff seems to genuinely enjoy working there. Linda had been at another care facility before Longwood and the staff was constantly turning over, so it’s nice to see familiar faces whenever we visit Linda. The meals are appealing and nutritionally well-balanced. The entertainment is varied and enjoyable. Field trips nearby to Longwood Gardens and Lancaster County seem to be much appreciated by the residents. In short, we think Longwood is very well managed and several cuts above most care facilities. Additionally, the facility is always clean and well maintained. Best wishes for a happy holiday season and keep up the high standards. Linda Green & Kristen Aran From Longwood

Sincerely, Jeffrey A. Smith

June started as a chef and through hard work and her leadership skills was promoted to Assistant Dining Director. Just a few months later, she was promoted to Dining Services Director at Livingston where she and (Kareem Grady) will model a new structure for our expanded and growing dining services program. “When June was promoted she stated, “I will not let you down!” I know that June had a game plan for success before the position was even offered to her! That’s what leaders do. It’s not the title that makes you successful, it’s the person behind the title!- Joann Ryan, Executive Director

BRENDA! On January 25, 2022, Brenda was inducted into the American Seniors Housing Association’s Senior Living Hall of Fame at the organization’s annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, alongside fellow senior living pioneers John C. Erickson and Steven L. Vick.

In her acceptance speech, Brenda said that she is thankful to work in an industry that truly can change people’s lives. She believes that the industry is focused more now than ever before on the frontline team members and their well-being. She is inspired by the working moms who have had to manage through the challenges of school closings and virtual classrooms during the pandemic. “I am incredibly honored to be inducted into the Senior Living Hall of Fame and to be with a class of two very special and impactful leaders as John Erickson and Steven Vick. It’s been, no doubt, a very challenging two years for all of us, but with challenges come opportunities.”- Brenda Bacon

Special Guest In May, during her senior year at Binghamton University, Rebecca Koltun was out on a skiing trip with friends. On that fateful day, as she was looking forward to her graduation and attending medical school, she had a skiing accident that resulted in her becoming quadraplegic. After many surgeries and ongoing therapy, Rebecca was ready to return home, but her parents needed more time to make the renovations to their home so it would be handicapped accessible. The Koltuns needed a home close to home so they could get Rebecca out of the hospital and they could all be together. Brandywine Living at Huntington Terrace was their choice and we scrambled to make everything work to become the Koltuns temporary home away from home for seven weeks.

Rebecca and her family and John Hunt (Executive Director)

I’ve definitely felt the love and support from the community. I’m really excited to be able to thank them in person and have people come visit me.

- Rebecca Koltun

This is the post from the Koltuns on their Facebook page on January 22. 2022. As many of you know we have been living at Brandywine Independent Living in Melville since late September. In about another week, or so G-d willing, we will move back home. I wanted to take a moment to talk about Brandywine which took us in when we had nowhere else to go. While we were living up in Boston we knew that the only way we could return to New York is if we could find a rehab hospital, that would take Rebecca and once Rebecca was discharged from that hospital we have a handicapped-accessible apartment that she could move into with us until our house was ready. Brandywine agreed to rent us an apartment on a short-term basis. They furnished the apartment and renovated the shower in one of the bathrooms so that Rebecca could roll her shower chair in. They even asked what Rebecca’s tastes were as far as colors and furniture; hence we got yellow towels and beachy type furniture. We lived here for close to three months before Becca was finally able to move in with us. During that time staff and residents waited with great anticipation for her arrival. At times it felt like she would never get here. For months I could only imagine what it would be like for her here. I will admit I do not know a lot about developments like Brandywine which has both Independent Living and Assisted Living sections. Brandywine however is a real community. People genuinely care about each other here. They care about us. The staff and the residents are all super friendly. I will be sad to leave them.

Rebecca and her parents
