R ACCO N T I IDM ALUMNI NETWORK

Are you looking for a screenwriter? Check out our network! The IDM alumni network was conceived as a platform for participants of past RACCONTI programs to exchange experiences, present new projects, share news and stay connected - not only amongst themselves but also to IDM Film Fund & Commission. In the following pages, you will find the profile of every screenwriter that has taken part in our RACCONTI programs. You may contact them through their contact references, or by contacting the IDM Film Fund & Commission office. We will be happy to forward your request to the writers. 6

ABOUT R ACCO N T I RACCONTI is a script development program, aimed specifically at screenwriters working in the Italian and German-speaking markets and run by IDM Film Fund & Commission (within IDM Südtirol – Alto Adige), the regional film fund of South Tyrol. Its flagship is the RACCONTI | IDM Script Lab where professional screenwriters develop projects and refine their skills with the help of international experts and in creative collaboration with colleagues from other countries. This cross-cultural aspect is as essential to the program as the challenge we set ourselves: to improve storytelling by continuously exploring new frontiers. Over the course of the years, RACCONTI has adapted to commercial trends and shifted from the development of feature and TV films to TV series. Whether in individual mentoring sessions or in writers’ rooms, our screenwriters collaborate with production companies from several European countries, and under the guidance of consultants from all over the world. 8

Refine your skills, find your peers, build your network, write your story, RACCONTI.

Each program consists of two week-long workshops, held in South Tyrol. During the workshops, the focus is on the practical development of a concept. However, masterclasses with prominent screenwriters, showrunners, commissioning editors and producers provide valuable insights into the craft of writing and the tricks of the trade. A project usually develops from a core idea into a marketable treatment or concept and the writers present their results to the industry at exclusive events. We aim to train and bring together talents who want to create stories beyond the confines of their national markets, while also keeping our roots in mind. Thus, we encouraged local writers to apply for the RACCONTI Local Talent | IDM Mentoring Program and for RACCONTI Local Plus | IDM Short Film Program in the past years. These share the same mission as the flagship program but with the specific goal of helping talented local writers to break into the industry. 9

RACCO N T I # 7 IDM SCRIPT LAB

In its seventh edition, the RACCONTI #7 | IDM Script Lab explored new approaches to storytelling for television and, for the first time, entered the digital arena with a new creative think tank. Under the motto SPLIT SCREEN writers had the opportunity to apply for two different sections of the program with the same goal: to create an original concept for a TV series or a digital series in a team with other writers and producers and the support of international experts. Another innovation was to reach out to directors who want to work in digital formats. In the Writers’ Room of RACCONTI #7 a team of four screenwriters fleshed out a concept for a TV series in close collaboration with the Munich-based production company Lieblingsfilm (producers: Philipp Budweg, Robert Marciniak and Julia Rappold). Award-winning writer Jana Burbach (Bad Banks, Die Heiland) led this room as head writer and developed her new original idea for a TV series, Treeline with the selected staff writers into a concept and bible. British producer and story consultant Manda Levin (The Tunnel) consulted the team. 10

In the Digital Think Tank, seven writers/directors developed their own ideas for a digital series and collaborated with each other on group projects in a writers’ room approach. Three mentors, all of them pioneers in the arena of digital storytelling, guided them: German producer Kristian Costa-Zahn/Endemol Shine Beyond (Antarktika), Polish writer/producer Wiktor Piatkowski/Bahama Films (Just Push Abuba), French producer Mathieu Van de Velde/ Black Sheep Films (Patricia Moore). In addition, Italian experts Nicolò Gallio and Nicola Lusuardi also joined the workshops as guest lecturers. At the closing event, which takes places at the Series Mania Festival, the projects of this edition will be presented to the industry.

RACCO N T I

LOCAL PLUS #2

The RACCONTI | Local Plus program is aimed primarily at emerging producers and writers, who have the opportunity to undergo basic training in dramaturgy and production through practical work on their concept for a short film. They get a chance to discuss their projects with other film professionals and to develop them further with guidance from industry experts. The second edition of RACCONTI | Local Plus offered two workshop sessions focusing on dramaturgy and production. The projects Monster (directed by Gerd Weigl, produced by Tobias Gruber and written by Jannis Kager Kofler) and The Receptionist (directed by Giuseppe Piva, produced by Alex Pescosta & Lorenz Zenleser and written by Alessio Posar) have been selected as the winners by a jury and were given the opportunity to develop these projects. A final workshop will close the program and this will provide a further insight into the field of distribution. The final short films will be presented officially in spring 2020. Applications for RACCONTI Local Plus should be made by the writer/director and producer in tandem. At least one of the candidates should be from South Tyrol. 12

FAQS Who may apply? All professional screenwriters may apply for the Script Lab, although the program specifically targets writers from the Italian and German language areas. Talented writers from South Tyrol (including those from outside of the industry) are expressly urged to apply.

What does the program offer? The program offers the opportunity to work within an intercultural team, under the guidance of international experts. Over the course of two workshops in South Tyrol and through individual dramaturgical consultations (online), participants develop their material into market-ready treatments or concepts. In addition to the story consultants who guide the development process, these include guest lecturers who focus on current themes, which are relevant to the target markets.

On what type of projects does RACCONTI focus? The program is aimed at projects that are suitable for a co-production between Italy and Germany, Austria or Switzerland or/and are orientated towards an international audience or/and that have a connection to South Tyrol. The thematic focus may shift each year.

When does RACCONTI take place? The Script Lab is an annual IDM event. The time-frame in which it takes place may change each year. Last edition’s deadline for applications for both sections was July 29, 2018. The RACCONTI # 7 Script Lab session 1 was held in October and session 2 in November 2018.

How does the selection process of the participants work? Candidates are required, within the predefined deadline, to submit their CV and filmography, a letter describing their motivation and a sample of their work. The selection process is subject to change each year.

How do the screenwriters benefit from the RACCONTI ALUMNI network? Due to the internationalism of the program, participants can expand their personal networks and establish interesting contacts with writers and producers from other countries.

What is RACCONTI? RACCONTI is a script development program and advanced training initiative for professional screenwriters.

How much does it cost? Participation requires a registration fee. The writers’ stay in South Tyrol is free of charge, but they are required to pay for and make their own travel arrangements. 14

The film funding department of IDM has served as a financial backer and service partner for film productions since 2010. The stated goal is to raise South Tyrol’s profile as a film location and to support funding for film projects that are realized wholly or partly in South Tyrol. The focus of the film funding is mainly economic. The instrument of film funding is designed to encourage investments in the province that contribute to the development and strengthening of the film infrastructure. Due to the geographical location of the province and the attendant bilingualism, IDM looks beyond borders as a matter of course and seeks to create an interface between the three film markets of Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. IDM thus places special focus on promoting co-productions between these countries. In addition, IDM tries to encourage and strengthen professional exchange and mutual understanding of prevailing production and financing conditions
