Mr. & Mrs. Dov Nierenberg PA R E N T S O F T H E Y E A R AWA R D

Mr. Dov and Mrs. Dena Nierenberg were born and raised in Brooklyn. R’ Dov is the son of Mr. Shimon and Mrs. Irene Nierenberg, Dena is the daughter of Mr. Josh and Mrs. Ruth Braunstein, both are distinguished families in the Flatbush community. Dov went to Yeshiva Chaim Berlin, and then Yeshiva Darkei Noam for Beis Medrash, and maintains a close kesher with the Bostoner Rebbe.

Dena attended BYA high school, and the Prospect Park Seminary in Brooklyn.

R’Dov is a Mispallil at the Khal Tefila L’Moshe also known as the Bostoner Beis Medrash. Mr. Nierenberg is a real estate manager.

Dena is a professor of psychology at Touro College. In addition, Dena enjoys hosting singles events, fundraisers and talent shows.

The Nierenbergs are the proud parents of four children. Their daughter Nechie is a graphic designer, their sons Ephraim and Simcha are learning in Israel and their daughter Esther is in our seventh grade. Dena’s passion for bringing out the best in people II

by promoting their potential and abilities are evident in her lovely children.

The Nierenbergs are involved with Bayis Ne’eman, Zichron Shlomo Refuah Fund, Sister to Sister, and Myriam’s House. Dena enjoys hosting non-competitive talent shows in the community, and bringing out the best in her students at Touro College.

It is with pride that we present The Parents of the Year award to this distinguished couple.

Dr. Abish Mendel H A KO R A S H AT O V AWA R D

While Abish held the title of Chairman, no man can devote large segments of his time and “koach” to the “needs of the community” without the explicit and complicit agreement and help of his “Aishes Chayil”, Abish and by extension Flori are active in a large number of Communal activities; shul, Vishnitz, Mosdos in Eretz Yisroel and of course Bnos Leah Prospect Park yeshiva for well over 32 years.

Abish has had a successful business career, in public relation, banking and real estate development. He is currently running Riverbrook Equities. All during his business career Abish had a parallel career in helping “Communal Organizations”, success in one area mirrored success in the other.

During his extraordinarily accomplished term as BLOPPY Board Chairman, for over 32 years, Abish helped navigate through many trials and tribulations, all without losing his cool. His pithy analysis of people and situations has always been on target, and helpful. He is at all times level-headed, optimistic, understanding and respectful.

He leads and persuades with reason and common sense. All of his IV

work, both professionally and as communal leader, reflects the ideal

Dr. Mendel may be reducing his involvement in PPY management, but he is sharing his experience here with Yeshiva Nishmas Hatorah, a boys’ high school in the Five Towns.

We wish him and Flori equal success in kodesh and chol and much nachas from their growing family in good health for years to come.

Rabbi Eliezer Stern

MENAHEL, BNOS LEAH HIGH SCHOOL H A R B OT Z AS TO R A H AWA R D

Rabbi Eliezer Stern is a person who is “tocho k’baro” and completely dedicated to benefiting Klal Yisroel. What you see is what you get, a person whose whole life revolves around learning torah, teaching his students and to members of his Daf Yomi Chaburah.

He is/was devoted to his parents and in-laws, and to all his children and grandchildren. Rabbi Stern attended the Yeshiva of Eastern Parkway, Netzach Yisroel, Mir and Adelphi University. His years in Netzach Yisroel left a deep impression on him and helped him to decide what direction he wanted in his life.

His original focus at Bnos Leah Prospect Park Yeshiva was on Learning Disabled students, and he started the school’s resource room and self-contained classrooms. Rabbi Stern soon came to realize that it would be more effective not to segregate these special students, but to meet their needs as they attend regular classes. This has become part of the culture of Bnos Leah PPY high school. Over the past 35 years, Rabbi Stern’s approach has evolved to include all classes and all students. Each student is seen, in his VI

eyes, as an important person deserving of the best program and resources that the school has to offer. Rabbi Stern has developed an uncanny insight into every student, and used that to prepare classes carefully crafted to meet the needs of the students. Out of school Rabbi Stern is a Magid Shiur of a large and popular Daf Yomi group that has completed Shas numerous times. His shiur takes place in Congregation Ahavas chesed.

Rabbi Stern and his wife, Ruth, are the parents of 8 children KA”H. We wish him and his Rebbetzin continued Hatzlacha in all of their life’s undertakings.

Rabbi and Mrs. Stern are writing a Sefer Torah in memory of his father, Moshe Yehuda ben Menachem Mendel A”H, and in memory of Mrs. Stern’s late mother Gertie Wallach A”H. We wish his mother Y”B”L Mrs. Esther Stern much nachas from the entire Stern family and “arichas yomim”.

Message from the Dean A successfully run institution requires the combined efforts of parents, students, secretaries, maintenance people, teachers, assistant principals, principals and even “zechus ovos” to really be “matzliach”. Even with all the above in place you need thnas t,ghhx to have a truly “geshmake” school year. Boruch Hashem 5779 appears to be such a year. Students are learning, in all grades, and are happy as well, in both Brooklyn and Monsey.

The halls are filled with energy, vitality, creative designs and good vibes. From first graders singing their hearts out in practice for a siddur play to gorgeously decorated high school grade hallways. Our students have won writing and creative contests in many venues.

Student designed videos play in the halls, and the elementary school Penina Parsha contests have students busy studying and vying for prizes prominently displayed in the elementary school lobby.

Teachers in all grades are changing, upgrading and adapting lessons to today’s students. The high school teachers’ room is filled with lively discussions, and the elementary school principals and assistants work with teachers monthly. Under the direction of Mrs. Kinzer, a fifth-grade teacher, the elementary school newsletter is now widely read by parents and students.

The fifth grade through 11th grade Technology Asifa is beginning to have an impact on student cell phone usage, and even on their parent’s technology usage. In addition, registration for next year is strong, for all grades. It’s especially pleasing to see students return after a short sojourn to purportedly greener pastures. The excellent VIII

teaching staff and comradery of friends is what draws them back.

Over and over I hear from teachers that our student’s comportment, their quest for knowledge and their desire to learn is not matched elsewhere.

Our foray into Monsey this year is also a joy to watch. With classes from Kindergarten through First grade the same joyous thirst for learning “b’simcha” is remarkable. I must acknowledge the herculean efforts of the Monsey school administrator, Mrs Shifra Miriam Goldberger and the Principal Mrs. Shoshana Rube. Registration there will just about double the school’s size for next year.

All in all, there is an aura of high energy and good feelings in the school. A hearty “yasher koach” to all who are so invested in the school and make us all look good. And thanks to all who have participated in our yearly fundraising, we’d be nowhere without your generosity and feelings of hakaros hatov to the school.

Message from the President Tonight we are biding our thanks and recognizing two outstanding individuals who have given of themselves, with a full heart to the success of Prospect Park Bnos Leah. They have played a pivotal role in our accomplishments, spanning four decades. I am proud to consider myself a close confidant of each one of them.

Dr. Abish Mendel’s leadership of the Board of Directors of Prospect Park Bnos Leah has enabled our Mosad Hachinuch to become world-renowned. His insight and perception have served us well, in navigating through many a difficult crossroad. We know we can continue to count on his vital input in the ongoing issues facing the board. May he continue in his role of prominence among many causes worthy causes, including our own, in his role as Chairman Ameritas.

And may he and his ayshel chayil, Flori have much nachas from their family for many years to come.

Rabbi Eliezer Stern has earned the respect and admiration of our students, including my own daughters as an Ish ha’emes and an adam hashalem. Rabbi Stern has affected our students in their understanding of the privilege of being a bas Yisroel. Rabbi Stern has also used his talents and abilities in his role as magid shiur to many in the broader Flatbush community.

May HKB”H continue to grant him the kochos to be mashpiah on our talmidos as well as his Daf Yomi talmidim. And may he and his ezer kinegdo, Ruthie, have continued nachas from their children and grandchildren, both here and in Eretz Yisroel.

In closing, Basy and I would like to express our best wishes to our newly appointed Chairman of our Board of Directors, Moshe Bodner.

Over the past many years, Moshe has shown his leadership skills, his as well as his vast knowledge in employer-employee and labor law matters. With the encouragement and support of his akeres habayis, Shavi, may he fill the shoes of his esteemed predecessor, to help continue the outstanding chinuch of our talmidos.

Message from the Chairman It has been a true highlight of my life to be able to be part of such a wonderful Mosed educating Bnos Yisroel.

The privilege of working with such a dedicated group of people through all these years has made me better and more astute individual regarding Jewish Education.

The years I worked with Rabbi Avrohom Kelman ZT�L and Mr. Eliezer Gluck A�H and many accomplished Board members allowed me to see what true dedication, perseverance and determination means in getting things accomplished for the benefit of Klal Yisroel.

Overtime we soaked in the knowledge of these and other dedicated people allowing me and many Board members to continue in their footsteps based on the foundation they set.

The goal was and is to make sure our Mesorah is passed on from generation to generation.

As time passed Rabbi Leib Kelman and I assumed these positions and were able to continue with the same Hadracha and Hashkofa .

The most satisfying aspect of working on behalf of the Yeshiva for over 30 years is seeing the new generations of Torahdika families that are the backbone and fabric of our society.

Our students are part of every possible fabric of society all making a Kiddush Hashem.

Elementary School P.T.A. Message We are proud to represent the parent body as we express our deepest gratitude to Rabbi Avrohom Kelman for everything that is Bnos Leah Prospect Park Yehiva.

We send our girls each morning to “Prospect” knowing they will be greeted warmly with love. The stellar education with attention to the individual is the hallmark of our school. It was Rabbi Kelman’s original vision that is the impetus for everything “Prospect.” May Rabbi Avrohom’s rich legacy continue to thrive in our daughters for many years .

The PTA strives to foster camaraderie between the parents, teachers and children as well as to add to the school spirit. We provide the extras that enhance what is already a truly wonderful experience. Thus far, the PTA has treated the children to honey cookies for Rosh Hashanah, doughnuts and other goodies for Chanukah and treats for Tu B’Shvat. We hosted the preschool brunch and are planning a number of fun filled events for the near future. We are also hard at work planning our Purim/ Pesach campaign for the staff.

The PTA would like to acknowledge and celebrate the very capable and creative teachers and support staff of our yeshiva. You have partnered with us in the awesome task of Chinuch HaBanos and we thank you for all that you do!

The PTA derives its direction and strength from the Hanhalah. We thank Rabbi Leib Kelman for continuing to lead with his unique style but always with the same trajectory as viii his illustrious father. The PTA appreciates our principals and division directors as well as the wonderful elementary and business office staff. Bnos Leah Prospect Park Yeshiva: Brooklyn & Monsey An Overview: Prospect Park Yeshiva Bnos Leah was founded by Rabbi Avrohom Kelman k"mz to help him in his efforts to have all his shul’s children enroll in yeshiva. In the early 1950’s many new immigrants and Holocaust survivors didn’t rate yeshiva chinuch as being worth the cost and the trouble of finding a school, or one that would accept their children.

When he arrived at the Prospect Park Jewish Center in September of 1950, the shul was in a second-floor room over a grocery store. Within two years he started a building drive and opened a kindergarten class and a Talmud Torah for children in public school. By 1954 the new building was completed and he opened a first grade. This was the first of his many remarkable accomplishments. Perhaps the most remarkable is the extraordinary group of mechanchos and teachers that the mosad has attracted. They are responsible for creating a school milieu that encourages student achievement.

We are grateful for the shul that founded the Yeshiva 67 years ago, and are thankful for the many years that Rabbi Avrohom Kelman k"mz, his son and grandchildren have been at the helm of our Yeshiva. We have also benefited from wonderful officers and legions of great students and families.

The Yeshiva’s first elementary school class graduated in June of 1962, and in September 1963 the high school was started. All classes are currently located in spacious accommodations on Avenue R. Our students and alumnae are well respected throughout the Torah world.

It is brought in the name of the Arizal that vkk,vv rjt lkuv kfv. This is true in education as well. Our wonderful nursery, led by Mrs. Elky Federman and our preschool led by Mrs. Ahuvi Weinberger, instill in our girls a joy of learning and doing mitzvos. The foundations are laid for Hebrew language, XV

thinking skills, and a willingness to accept classroom discipline. All of the above is accomplished with tremendous warmth.

The next division led by Mrs. Osnat Klestzick, Rabbi Leib Kelman, Rabbi Akiva Kelman, Mrs. Aberbach, Mrs. Salamon and Mrs. Fruchthandler focuses on every single student to ensure their spiritual and academic growth.

The elementary school builds on the preschool foundation and continues to help students acquire the skills to learn Chumash, Rashi, Navi, dikduk, safa, historia, halacha and parsha. The school uses our own innovative program, Penina Parsha to teach parsha mastery. Middos tovos are taught at every grade level along with handwriting, Hebrew language and many other components of chinuch habanos. The secular studies department instills a love of reading and works to make students adept at writing and mathematics and many additional subjects. Science Lab, Computer Lab, Library, Chess, Enrichment, Art, Music and Gym help round out the program in elementary school.

Our girls continue on to high school under the leadership of our world renowned principals Mrs. Press and Rabbi Stern, who is being feted tonight on the occasion of 36th year at PPY. Content is acquired using old skills as well as newly-learned skills in high school. Students are exposed to a very broad curriculum in both limudei kodesh and chol. Our teaching staff also works on hashkafa, middos and socialization.

We are excited about our new STEM courses taught in the high school in the tenth and twelfth grades. This curriculum is being offered by The Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (CIJE) and is jointly funded by CIJE and Prospect Park Yeshiva. We hope that our girls will develop new career paths suitable for frum women and mothers. Our students go on to seminaries in Eretz Yisroel and many continue their secular educations and develop careers. The Yeshiva maintains two shuls, one on Avenue R and one on Dorchester Road.

The total annual budget is over nine million dollars and the Annual Dinner Journal Campaign is the main fund-raising event that helps to cover the Yeshiva’s deficit. It is a cause worthy of your support and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all who share in making this Dinner and Journal Campaign successful. May you be rewarded.

Struck a Chord

What stands out most in my mind about Rabbi Stern is his Yashrus. We learned Navi (Yehoshua, Shoftim, Shmuel Aleph and Shmuel Bais) in 11th grade and Chumash Beraishis in 12th grade straight. The words of Hashem speak for themselves. There was very little tangential discussion, just Psukim and Meforshim. We covered so much, and there was so much Mussar brought out straight from the psukim: The role of a leader, following Halacha and having Emunas Chachamim, being accountable for one’s actions... Nothing was skipped or glossed over.

“Side” lessons included the reverence with which Rabbi Stern spoke about his Rebbi, Rav Gustman ztz”l, the respect with which he spoke to us, his calmness and self-control in all situations... These are life lessons that I try to live by always as a teacher, a parent, and a Yid. I am an avid fan of Rabbi Stern’s Shaar Habitachon shiurim, because he gives them over with that same clarity, and I know he lives by everything he tells us.

May Rabbi Stern continue to teach and inspire in good health amv”sh.

Chaviva (Krohn) Pfeiffer Class of ‘87 Rabbi Stern taught me so many things! While teaching he would interlace life lessons and personal experiences that made his classes so real and meaningful. He mentioned having in mind ones husband and boys when saying the bracha “ata chonen le’adam da’as” during shimone esrei....” his phone shiurim on emunah and bitachon were incredible!

I miss hearing them! I’m sorry I am camera shy and didnt want to video myself. I hope you can use some of the information I’ve sent.

Rabbi Stern, your alumnae Chovos Halevavos shiur was fantastic! It gave me a weekly boost and somehow was the just the message I needed each time I listened in. Thank you for giving of your time and wisdom not only to your current students but to those of us trying to live those lessons in the years and stages beyond High School. Rabbi Stern was always very down to earth and approachable on any subject. We knew we could be open with him and he would be kind and open in return. In the past few years, I have enjoyed and learned from Rabbi Stern’s Chovos Halevavos conference call and was deeply touched when he came to be menachem avel at my parents’ home. That is the sign of a forever Rebbe and truly caring Jew.

I am sure I will be one of many that remembers Rabbi Stern playing an imaginary violin when we told him some sob story about how we couldn’t possibly take the quiz, hand in the assignment, be expected to sit in class...

I play one for my kids sometimes! It struck a chord!

Adina (Wertenteil) Melcer ‘88 As our Chumash teacher, Rabbi Stern was concerned for our growth in Torah, and also for our emotional well-being. I remember clearly, how Rabbi Stern would be very troubled if he heard a girl let out a sigh!

He would announce, (and even write on the board,) “‫ ”!האנחה שוברת את הגוף‬He truly cared about each student, and wanted us to be calm and happy so we could learn and grow.

Through my years in Prospect Park, the integrity I learned from Rabbi Stern has struck a chord within me. I recall the story Rabbi Stern told about his son when he was pulled over and the cop assumed the other driver was at fault.

With pride in his voice, Rabbi Stern recounted how his son stepped forward to admit he was guilty. That pride has carried me through countless nisyonos, encouraging me to stand on the side of emes no matter how difficult it may seem. Despite the losses and large tickets of olam hazeh, we stand to gain the ultimate reward and closeness to Hashem when remaining with the truth.

I remember Rabbi Stern being a very positive, upbeat teacher. It is only years later, looking back, that I realize how masterful his chinuch was. He found ways to connect to each student and make her feel special. He did so by finding something about the student that was unique and playing up on it and also created “insider jokes” with the class as a whole. Who can forget armadillos?

Temi (Orzel) Unger ‘94 I learned a really powerful lesson from Rabbi Stern that has stayed with me until today which I still practice: Just apologize. No excuses.

One of my years in high school Rabbi Stern caught me in the hallway during final time, which we all knew was against the rules. I believed I had a valid reason for being there, and when Rabbi Stern pointed out that I was doing the wrong thing, I started to explain why I was there.

Rabbi Stern stopped me, and said, “when you do something wrong, you don’t give excuses. You just apologize.”

I remember feeling upset that I wasn’t allowed to justify myself, but of course I apologized and moved on. I never forgot that lesson, though, and as I matured I realized the wisdom in it.

Since then, I have had many times where I find myself about to add a justification or excuse on to an apology I made...and then I stop myself, remembering Rabbi Stern’s lesson to me. This lesson has helped me become a more mature, thoughtful, and less self-centered person.

Thank you, Rabbi Stern! You probably do not remember this incident, but I won’t forget it.

When I left high school, it was with the feeling that Rabbi Stern had impacted me more than any other single teacher I had had during my school years. I must admit that I now have only vague recollections of much of the actual material we learned with Rabbi Stern during his formal Chumash and Navi classes. Ironically, what I remember most clearly was the lesson Rabbi Stern gave over when a group of us came to be Menachem Aveil following the petirah of his father. Rabbi Stern related how carefully his father had measured the salads in his take-out store, making sure not to weigh the salad with the cover on the container since the customer would then be charged extra due the weight of the cover. I believe the reason this story struck a chord was that it gave me an insight into how Rabbi Stern developed his defining character traits of emes and yashrus. And it was these middos that made such a strong impression during my years as his student. Rabbi Stern taught by example (and with the occasional well-placed comment) how crucial it is for a Yid to be honest in his/her relationship with other people, honest in his/her relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and, above all, honest with him/herself.

May we all have the siyatta dishmaya to live up to Rabbi Stern’s example and may Hakadosh Baruch Hu grant Rabbi Stern continued hatzlacha in his Avodas Hakodesh and continued Yiddishe Nachas from his talmidos and his family!

Rabbi Stern was one of my first male teachers. It was intriguing it was to have a teacher teach us navi through baseball examples, flying paper balls, seeand lirrle beetle car, etc... He reached our class by understanding where we were, yet helping us soar to higher levels. Rabbi Stern gave us guidance (I still remember his words of a particular seminary - “Seminary X is a wonderful seminary, but not for Suri Berman!”) during high school and even after. He is one everyone feels comfortable talking to. His teachings were a song - they went deep and touched the strings of our hearts, but his example was a symphony. On behalf of my entire family (who all benefit from his teachings through me) we wish Rabbi and Mrs. Stern much continued hatzlacha in the world of chinuch and harbatzas Torah. Being in Marlboro, NJ involved intimately with harbatzas Torah, I know the challenges and rewards firsthand! Mazal tov and enjoy the well-deserved honor!

I loved Rabbi Stern’s chumash class- one of my favorite in high school.

I’ll always remember Rabbi Stern’s shiur about bitachon-- and how hishtadlus and bitachon add up to 100%. The more bitachon you have the less hishtadlus you have to do and vice versa. Very powerful lesson and something I still quote to this day more than 15 years later.

Also, grateful for the encouragement he gave, the way he treated us like a mentch, and for the confidence he instilled. I don’t know if he remembers this but the letters E. E. E. and what it stood for, meant a lot to me. Thank you Rabbi Stern! Words can’t express enough of my appreciation!

Rabbi Stern said at the end of 12th grade- if you only remember one thing that I’ve taught you- remember this- so I got very attentive- because I knew I wouldn’t remember much anyway- he wrote on the board- Hashem is a ‫מטיב‬. I repeat it to myself when things don’t seem to be very good at all. Thank you Rabbi Stern for that lesson and the many others that surely have made a mark on all of your students.

I remember well the kindness and concern that Rabbi Stern showed for our happiness and well-being.

When I was in 11th grade, I went to the DMV to finish up my application for a driver’s license. After waiting for well over an hour on a Friday in the infamously long line, I suddenly realized that I had forgotten to bring cash with me. Panicking, I spotted Rabbi Stern with one of his children standing in the line. I asked someone to hold my place, and went to ask him for help. He looked at me in the eye (anyone who has met Rabbi Stern knows that “look in the eye”) and pulled out his wallet and handed me the amount I needed.

This encounter “struck a chord” in me, giving me the feeling that not only is Rabbi Stern an educator, but a concerned frum adult in the community who cares about students outside of the school walls.

May Hashem continue to give him strength and all the abilities needed to continue to shape positive, well-thought out and warm chinuch in Klal Yisrael.

(P.S. Later that Erev Shabbat my mother sent me over to Rabbi Stern’s address with the amount of cash loaned to me, and a platter of cookies, with the message that the cookies are not Ri’bis, but Hakras Hatov. Monday morning I asked Rabbi Stern if his family enjoyed the cookies, and he said that he couldn’t because it was Ri’bis.)

Nechama Gottesman What struck a chord is the down to earth expectations that Rabbi Stern had for us. In 12th grade, two girls received a significantly high number of The Sentence from Rabbi Blum. As this happened on Chanukah, the girls decided to make an epic (and might I say loud) presentation of The Sentence, which was definitely heard next door in Rabbi Stern’s Chumash class. While most teachers would have continued teaching and may have even incorporated some mashal about distractions into the lesson, Rabbi Stern realized how important it is to have some fun, and brought his Chumash class on a field trip to our classroom.

Bs”d Dear Rabbi Stern, a"ung Though I graduated in 2005 and I have not kept in touch, there are many “chords” that you struck in me.

One particular chord has shaped the way I think and live my life. I was deliberating between two seminaries and you were my seminary advisor. You couldn’t understand my dilemma at all. You said, “but this one has a clear Mesorah, how can you even consider the other one”. That message of the importance of Mesora is something that I live with as a person, as a parent, and as a teacher. You see, I teach English to religious but not “chariedi” junior high and high school students in Eretz Yisroel and as such, I encounter questions all the time about the difference between our lifestyles.

Your message about following our Mesora has become part of my everyday mantra.

I always have such positive feelings when I think about my high school experience - each and every part of it.... my grade, my teachers, classes and lessons, extra curricular activities and even all the hard assignments and finals.

Lots of those warm feelings toward High School is credited to

Rabbi Stern.

Rabbi Stern always made BLOPPY a happy safe place where we all want to be. We all remember rabbi stern smiling at us or making a joke. He would spot a girl walking down the hall and call her in for a quick five minutes just to see how she’s doing. Each class he taught began with “how are you, girls?” and he sincerely meant it and cared - even if it meant going into a tangent for twenty minutes (that then lead to a bbq or sports discussion!)

When I say tehillim perek pei gimmel, kuf lamed, and kuf mem bais I still hear Rabbi Stern’s voice as if I was sitting in high school as he recited each and every line with kavanah that we felt and internalized even till today.

I still remember how excited we all were when rabbi stern came to our “sichos mussar” group with surprise cinnamon buns! Or rabbi stern’s famous quotes plastered on his briefcase and wall of his office! And of course so many lessons he taught us - his tznius shiur, or the ongoing theme of yashrus, that are still a part of me today and still with me in each step I take.
