Getting to Know Bloordale Business Owners Article by: Liza Lukashevsky
Katia Taylor
This question and answer article format is based on the famous Vanity Fair Magazine’s long-running Proust questionnaire style.
Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com
Olivia Jewer Owner | Penny’s Bar 1306 Bloor St W What is your greatest extravagance? Food, I love food of all types, which is funny because I don’t serve food at Penny’s. | Who are your heroes in real life? My mom and grandma have always been my real life heroes! Strong independent women who raised me to be the person I am today. | What is your motto? Never regret, only learn from things you might regret! | What do you consider your greatest achievement? My greatest achievement is Penny’s. I feel that I have created a community unlike any I have ever encountered in Toronto. A safe space for all walks of life. | What is your idea of perfect happiness? My idea of perfect happiness is creating my beach bar. Waking up everyday to the sound of the ocean, doing what I love.
After more than two decades working as a bartender, Olivia Jewer’s dream of opening her own bar became a reality. Penny’s, now nine years running, is a casual joint where regulars and newcomers co-mingle on bar stools over reasonably priced beers and cocktails served nightly by Olivia herself. Living just a few doors away, Olivia is a proud “Bloordalian”, feeling right at home with Bloor Street West’s gritty atmosphere and colourful neighbours.

Alicia Lumsden Owner | Queen’s Shop 1169 Bloor St W What is your greatest extravagance? I love a spa day. | What is the quality you most like in a man? I’m not sure I can name just one; it’s a package deal...confidence, compassion, and vulnerability. | What is your motto? “Everything happens for a reason” and, “if it’s not life or death, then there’s no need to stress” | When and where are you happiest? I am happiest when I find myself with no agenda, deep in nature. | What is the trait you most deplore in others? Negativity. | How would you like to die? Peacefully in nature; maybe even while backcountry camping. | What is your most marked characteristic? I’d have to say my smile/ eyes (they go hand in hand); though some may say my red hair...even though I’m not a redhead. Lol.
Alicia Lumsden grew up in Brampton but “fled” to Toronto at the age of 18 for fashion school. With a good head for business and a passion for hair, Alicia dreamed of opening her own salon. After years of working at John Steinberg’s salon, Alicia was ready and in 2015 opened Queen’s Shop, a place where she proudly incorporates her own values of sustainability and inclusivity.

Jason Kun Owner Island Oysters 1165 Bloor St W What is your greatest extravagance? Monthly haircuts at Hollow Ground have to look good for all the catering events and keep the do trim and tidy. Also, comfortable shoes - I’m always Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com
on the go and on my feet. | On what occasion do you lie? I lie to my son about the existence of Santa Claus & the Tooth Fairy. I’ll keep doing it until he’s wise to the situation. | Which words or phrases do you most overuse? The real question is.... | What or who is the greatest love of your life? My exuberant 8 year old son Jasper. | Who are your heroes in real life? Terry Fox. | What is your greatest regret? Not filming more of my skateboarding as a youth. | Which talent would you most like to have? Tune & play guitar by ear. I’m currently diagnosed as tone deaf; thus, all I can do is rap. | If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? A sea lion or otter. | What is your greatest fear? Arriving at an oyster job without an oyster knife.
Jason Kun grew up in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, foraging for seafood, clams, and rock crab. After moving to Toronto 15 years ago, he started throwing “oyster parties”. His first pop-up event was at Dufferin Grove Farmers’ Market and helped him quickly gain a loyal following and a reputation that enabled him to expand to bigger events and catering. When those opportunities dried up during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jason pivoted to open Island Oysters, a cute little take-out shop just a few steps from his apartment at Bartlet and Bloor St W. Now, Jason is focusing on this full experience oysters and seafood dining with a great selection of wine, right here in Bloordale.

Vito Pasquariello Owner Vito’s Barbershop | 1258 Bloor St W What do you value in your friends? Loyalty, trustworthiness, and a sense of humor. Some of my customers became friends, but most of them have passed away or moved out of the neighborhood. We used to play cards, discuss politics, and the Toronto sports teams. We also talked about how to improve the area. | What is your most treasured possession? All the scissors and razors I kept all these years. My barber chair they don’t make them like that any longer. | Who are your heroes in real life? My mother and father. I didn’t see them much over the years once we came to Canada. Telephoning back then wasn’t like today. We had to keep trying to see if an operator could get a line through. Today my wife and I can call our family in Italy anytime and it’s not as expensive like it was back then. | What or who is the greatest love of your life? My wife. Together we share so many memories. Good and not so good. My wife is a good woman, wife, and mother. I am grateful she has always been there for me and our family. | What do you consider the most overrated virtue? People trying to act or be perfect, instead of being themselves. | What is the quality you most like in a person? You have to have integrity. A person has to be honest, so others respect and trust them. | What is your greatest regret? I wish I would have or could have spent more time with my kids as they were growing up. My wife and I worked long hours so that our children could have an easier life but we always went to family picnics with our other families.
In 1958, 23 year-old Vito Pasquariello arrived in Canada from Italy and decided to build a life in Toronto. In order to support his wife and three children, he opened a small barbershop on the south side of Bloor street (currently occupied by Ransack The Universe). According to Vito, Bloordale was largely a Ukrainian and Polish community and a great spot to raise children. He then found a more permanent situation across the street, and moved his business to a small building on the north side of Bloor where his family could live on the second floor. It is now 65 years later and Vito is still cutting hair with some regulars coming in every month for over 30 years. Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com

Bag of
Toronto The Bag of Toronto originally started as a pandemic project to support small businesses that had extremely limited ways to get products to customers. It
Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com
has continued on and even expanded. Their motto is ‘Supporting small businesses, one bag at a time’.
What’s the Bag?! It’s a bag full of goodies and products from local neighbourhood businesses that are sold to the public, with a built-in financial donation to hyper-local charities. Since its inception, the Bag of Toronto program has: • Directly helped more than 120 local businesses • Generated over $215,000 in sales for small businesses • Donated $15,000 to local charities The first iteration of this project ran from April - June 2020, and featured businesses along Bloor St West. Since then, Bag of Toronto has worked with nearly 10 BIAs to offer the bags during various holidays in 2020-2023. Stay tuned to see when it’s available again by visiting: bagoftoronto.ca or @bagoftoronto.

Pumpkin Giveaway by Richie Dos Santos
@rich3dee
Every fall, the Bloordale BIA is proud to turn Susan Tibaldi Parkette into an urban pumpkin patch.. It is always a great family activity for anyone of any age to find that special orange (or white) oversized gourd! We work with local business Family Fruit and Flower every year to source and deliver the pumpkins, and try to add in some treats from Bloordale bakeries. When kids (or adults) and pets come dressed in costume, it adds even more delight!

Bloordale Ghost Signs Words and
by Katherine Taylor
Scattered throughout Bloordale are remnants of signs advertising bygone
Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com
businesses. Popularly known as ghost signs, each provides a peephole into the past, a glimpse into the lives and livelihoods of those who helped build up the community.
1275 Bloor St. W. St. Paul’s Hair Place Tucked within the entrance to 1275 Bloor St. W. is a sign for Paul D’Agostino’s long absent salon, St. Paul’s Hair Place. Originally located next door at 1277 Bloor St. W., Paul moved his shop here in 1983 and shared the space with his family’s business, Canadian European Children’s Wear. Though Paul D’Agostino would move out of the building just a few years later, the salon’s sign has endured for more than 35 years.
1230 Bloor St. W. Dessau’s Ladies’ Wear A recently revealed partial terrazzo entrance at 1230 Bloor St. W. recalls Samuel Dessau’s ladies’ wear shop. First opened in 1939, the shop would have a terrific run, remaining in business until 1974.
16
1260 Bloor St. W. Ontario Beauty Salon Ghost signs can be found in many forms but one of the most unique can be spotted at 1260 Bloor St. W. Here, a weather-mat remarkably preserves the record of Norman Hosgood’s Ontario Salon. In business since 1937, Hosgood moved his shop here in 1949 and would stay until 1979. Given his absence of more than 40 years, it seems a rare and wonderful thing that later tenants kept and continued to use his weather-mat.
1279 Bloor St. W. Strand Credit Clothiers The oldest ghost sign in Bloordale can be found at 1279 Bloor St. W. Painted in 1929, it is remarkable not just for its age but also for encapsulating a particularly turbulent time in history. It was that same year when the Strand Family clothing company opened a branch here, offering purchases on credit. Unfortunately for the company, the stock market crash that fall would bring about their end. Not long after the branch opened, the company entered bankruptcy. Shortly after, the store was taken over by Harry Pearlston, a former employee of the firm, and re-branded as Exclusive Clothiers.

Construction News Contributed By Oliver Couto B.A. Hons. C.E.T. Beekeeper / Owner The Bee Shop | Updated as of September 2023 Bloordale is undergoing huge development changes in its immediate future. Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com
Several condominium towers and their retail / commercial components are either approved or in the application stages. Occupancy is expected to begin in the next three to five years. With an influx of people to the tune of about 10,000 occupants - along with their families, friends, relatives, service and delivery needs - new development will easily mean 40,000 people frequenting the area on an aggregate monthly basis. To welcome and accommodate this increase in foot traffic, Bloordale will need to make some changes to its existing services and infrastructure. For example, changes to parking, foot and vehicle traffic flow, and accessibility are just some of the areas where changes may be needed.
18
Let’s take a walk through some of the various developments proposed or underway: Starting with the east end of Bloordale (1131 Bloor St W), the former Toronto District School Board (TDSB) lands that contained part of the Bloor Collegiate Institute and Kent Public School will be developed. This 3-hectare site was sold to Capital Developments and Metropia to ease the TDSB’s $3.3 billion maintenance backlog. Going now to Bloordale’s west end (1293 Bloor St W), we find that RioCan has applied to do a 28-story condo tower with a retail component. A Bank of Montreal is currently on the site of this proposed development. RioCan has also acquired two additional adjacent properties directly south of BMO on Lansdowne Ave, as well as a property directly west of the BMO, to accommodate their proposed development.
Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com
19
Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com
Further west is Value Village’s 2.4-acre site (1319 Bloor St W), which was acquired for $80M in December 2020 by KingSett Capital. A 799-unit condo development spread over four towers of 32, 27, 12 and two storeys respectively has been approved for the site. This development will also have a large commercial/ retail component, as well as a publicly accessible mini park and a GO station that will have a platform for north-south GO service to Barrie and Union Station. For more information on these developments, please contact the developers of each individual project. Alternatively, you can look them up on the City of Toronto’s Application Information Centre and subscribe for updates via: toronto.com/aic

The B.I.G. (Bloor Improvement Group) was formed as a coalition organization that had come together to coordinate a concerted effort to find ways that celebrate Bloordale’s rich diversity. The organization brings focus to the arts, culture and businesses of the area, with the aim of strengthening the community through exploring connections between creators, artists, and the neighbourhood.
While 2023 saw a reduction of festival programming due to government funding cuts to the arts and tourism sectors, we still proceeded with a strong emphasis on participatory art workshops, in-house created projects and programming delivered by local businesses - and had an incredible festival!.
The 2023 BIG on Bloor Festival was attended by over 143,000 visitors as a two-day street closure, celebrating its 16th year since being established in 2007. Despite the rain on day one, we still surpassed attendance records. Visitors this year were primarily locals, rather than tourists travelling more than 40km, as found by our surveying. The festival resulted in an incredible local economic impact of $20,841,719 in total visitor spending*.
*These findings are from a report generated by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport TREIM model.
We look forward to bringing it back again and getting the community out in 2024!

Cycling Safety Tips Words by Lanrick Bennett Jr, Bicycle Mayor of Toronto @BicycleMayorTO by Selina McCallum
@shotbyselina
Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com
As a year-round cyclist, here are some tips that I hope can keep you and those around you safe while you ride along Bloor Street.
#1 Check your ride! It’s wonderful to pick up and go on your bike as far as you can go. However, it is essential to make sure the bike is in good condition. Check tire pressure, brakes, bell, lights, fitted helmet and adjust your seat.
#2 Know where you are going! Whether you feel comfortable riding on streets or only in protected cycle tracks, knowing the route you’d like to take, is important. Visit the City of Toronto’s Cycling page for updates on maintenance of the cycling network. Keep alert.
#3 Clothing and comfort matters! How you dress is really important. Move around in the clothes you’re in. If they feel restricted or uncomfortable DON’T wear it! Wear shorts, a T-shirt and pack a garment bag. Alternatively in the winter, don’t be shy to layer on gloves, a sweater and thermal underwear. Check the weather and don’t be afraid to take time planning ahead.
26
#4 Tour de France? Not so much. You’re moving faster than an average person walking or rolling. You don’t need to rush. You are bound by Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, so stop at red lights and stop signs. Do your best not to ride on sidewalks and make sure to yield to pedestrians.
#5 You are riding a Sustainable Urban Vehicle! Your mental and physical health loves cycling. Have fun exploring your community. If you’re able, do it with friends and family. If you have questions about accessible cycling in the city, please reach out to the folks at Cycle Toronto or email me at bicyclemayortoronto@gmail.com Don’t have a bike or on the go? Borrow one from Toronto Bikeshare locations in and around Bloordale:

SECRETS FROM THE LANEWAYS Words and
By Shari Kasman
Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com
1. Geoff the Bike Fixer If you ever wondered why there’s a wheel hanging from a pole in the laneway between St. Clarens and Margueretta not far south of Bloor, it’s to mark the location of Geoffrey Bercarich’s garage. He’s been repairing bikes for the past 20 years and, lucky for Bloordale, that garage is his workshop. Geoff’s been very involved with the cycling community and has been instrumental in memorializing fallen cyclists with the ghost bikes program. Feel free to get in touch with him for bike repairs by phoning or texting 416-985-8894.
28
2. St. Clarens - Emerson Laneway In 2021, Dan Milford-Warren and Katie Didyk spearheaded a community initiative to transform the laneway between St. Clarens and Emerson Ave. just north of Bloor. They hung strings of lights crisscrossing the laneway, hired local artist Victor Fraser to paint the word “together” on the pavement, and had local kids paint butterfly cutouts, which they later added to a chain-link fence. Paolo Gómez, program director at community arts organization Muse Arts also helped them to organize a hopscotch mural that remains very popular with children to this day.
3. Dairy Belle Garage Perhaps you’ve always wondered where ice cream trucks sleep at night. This particular ice cream truck stays in a laneway garage. It’s one of the largest garages in the entire laneway, clearly built specifically to accommodate this Dairy Belle ice cream truck.

Bloordale Magazine | 2023 | bloordalevillagebia.com
4. Cosmos Nature Lane Between Brock and Margueretta, north of Bloor, is Cosmos Nature Lane. It was established in 2019 and since then, they’ve partnered with the Laneway Project, which granted them funding for further activation in the space. Over the years, they’ve organized the installation of lighting, painting of murals, and seed bomb workshops. Plus, they’ve hosted cleanups, built planters, birdhouses, and rain barrels, and of course, they’ve planted cosmos flowers throughout the space, justifying the laneway’s name.
30
5. Lovebot Mural Joanna and Mark Hazelden had their garage tagged some years ago and wanted to cover it with something nice. They contacted artist Matthew Del Degan, whose Lovebot characters can be spotted around the city, hoping he could create something happy and friendly that reflected their family with two kids. Since then, they’ve had one of the nicest garages in the neighbourhood.
6. Peter the Woodworker Hidden in one Bloordale laneway is a large workshop busy with several woodworkers and metal fabricators. In charge of this space is Peter Samuel Wowk, who has designed and created a range of products, such as bronze and aluminum basketball hoops, wooden planters in fun colours, and coffee tables. He likes to bring a mix of sculptural elements and traditional woodworking to his pieces, which are ultimately innovative in nature. Check out his work on
