PHARMACIST Eric Wu FOCUS

Blooms The Chemist Miranda

How long have you been a Pharmacist with the Blooms The Chemist network? I’ve been a Pharmacist for 10 years and spent seven of those with Blooms The Chemist. What made you want to become a Pharmacist? Having the ability to help those in need, as not all of us are fortunate enough to live in good health. What is the most important thing you’ve learnt as a Pharmacist? Listening and talking to people can sometimes be more helpful than dispensing medications. How do you like to relax or spend your free time? The gym is a must and going for a run outside helps me unwind. I absolutely love food, so I’m always searching for the next best feed! What’s the best thing about your community? The Sutherland Shire is a beautiful place to live with a real sense of community spirit. I love that we’re like one big family at our Miranda store, including our team and our customers. We’re very fortunate to have such amazing customers and when they take the time to show their appreciation, it truly reminds the team and I of why we love what we do and how we make a difference every day. What are your favourite places to visit in your local community? A swim at one of the lesser-known spots between Shelley Beach and Salmon Haul Bay. A coffee, or three, at one of the many great coffee shop haunts in Cronulla like HAM. The Mountain burger at Pilgrims is a long-time favourite (I told you I was a foodie!) and a day trip to Bundeena is the perfect local escape. What are five things you couldn’t live without? The gym. Coffee. Coffee. Coffee. My wife. What’s the number one health tip you’ve learnt over the years? Staying social and maintaining communication is vital in keeping the mind sharp. We have many older customers who swear by the psychological benefits of keeping up an active social life. Quote to live by? “Good judgement comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgement.”- Will Rogers What was it like for you to win Blooms The Chemist’s Pharmacy of the Year Award for 2019? Hearing we’d won was the best moment! When I took over the store three years ago, I set myself and our team the goal of winning the title of Pharmacy of the Year. Now that we’ve won, it’s given us the standard to maintain in providing the best healthcare service for every person who enters the store. The win is also a testament to the hard work our team puts in daily, with our customers and also behind the scenes. It makes me extremely proud of everybody I work with and the people within our community.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

ENDOMETRIOSIS ENDOMETRIOSIS IS A DEBILITATING CONDITION THAT OFTEN GOES UNNOTICED AND IS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY MISUNDERSTOOD DISEASES. AFFECTING AN ESTIMATED 200 MILLION WOMEN WORLDWIDE, IT’S EXTREMELY COMMON FOR MANY WOMEN TO FIND THAT THEIR ENDOMETRIOSIS IS MISDIAGNOSED AS SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. 1

6

Health Check Magazine - ISSUE 15 AUTUMN 2020.indd 6

4/2/20 12:51 pm

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the tissue found in the uterine lining occurs elsewhere in the body, mainly in the pelvic region and reproductive organs. This can lead to symptoms such as pelvic and abdominal pain and painful menstrual cycles. Symptoms can often become so severe that patients may find it difficult to lead a normal life, missing significant days of work or school. There is no specific cause of endometriosis however some factors include a family history of the condition, heavy periods or low body weight. It takes an average of 7.5 years for women to be diagnosed with this painful condition due to the wide range of symptoms and limited knowledge and experience of the disease. Confirmation of endometriosis can be done via a laparoscopy, which is a surgical diagnostic procedure. This entails the insertion of a thin tube with a light into the abdomen,2 allowing the medical team to confirm and remove the presence of any endometrial tissue. There are many misconceptions that often arise when people talk about endometriosis, which can be detrimental to those living with the condition. Dismissing endometriosis as ‘just bad period pain’ discredits the seriousness

of the disease. Women who suffer from the condition can experience pain before, during and after their periods. In fact, this attitude normalises the mistruth that extremely painful periods are just part of life. Period pain should not interfere with your ability to experience ‘normal’ aspects of life such as going about your day. A further misconception is that undergoing a hysterectomy will cure endometriosis. This is in fact false as endometrial tissue can grow throughout the body; the absence of a uterus does not guarantee freedom from the disease. A hysterectomy may offer pain relief, but it is not guaranteed as a lifetime cure.3 Another common myth is that women with endometriosis can’t have children. This is dependent on the individual and cases can vary from person to person. It is said that an estimated 70% of women with mild to moderate endometriosis will get pregnant without treatment.4 Creating further awareness for endometriosis will assist in greater focus on exploring treatment and management options. Further information can be found at endomarchaustralia.org.au, including details on ‘March into Yellow’, their annual fundraiser. You can get involved by hosting your own fundraising high tea or find a fundraising event located near you.

ASK A PHARMACIST

FLU VACCINATIONS by Casey Shannon, Blooms The Chemist Pharmacist THE FIRST VACCINATION WAS DEVELOPED IN 1796 BY EDWARD JENNER AND WAS TARGETED TOWARDS PROTECTING PEOPLE FROM SMALLPOX.1 SINCE THAT TIME, VACCINATIONS HAVE EVOLVED TO REDUCE THE BURDEN OF MANY INFECTIONS AND DISEASES AND IN SOME INSTANCES HAVE EVEN ERADICATED CERTAIN DISEASES. VACCINATIONS ARE ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE AND COST-EFFECTIVE PUBLIC HEALTH INTERVENTIONS. IN AUSTRALIA, WE ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE ONE OF THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE PUBLICLY FUNDED IMMUNISATION PROGRAMS IN THE WORLD.2

One very important vaccine is the flu (influenza) vaccine. Influenza is a major cause of illness in Australia and at times can result in death. Each year the virus changes so it is important to get an annual flu vaccination. The more people vaccinated against influenza, the less likely it is that flu will spread across communities.

8

Health Check Magazine - ISSUE 15 AUTUMN 2020.indd 8

4/2/20 12:51 pm

HOW DO VACCINATIONS WORK?

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE FLU VACCINE?

Vaccines help develop immunity by imitating an infection.3 This infection almost never causes illness, however it does cause the immune system to produce T-lymphocytes and antibodies against the disease.4 For example, the influenza vaccine stimulates production on antibodies that are specific to the flu. This is why, in rare occasions, someone may experience an imitation infection after receiving a vaccination. These can include minor symptoms such as a sore throat, runny nose or fever (due to the activated immune response).

According to the Centres of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the flu vaccine reduces the chance of getting the flu by about 60%. Each year this percentage changes depending on groups of people and the strain of flu which is active at the time.6

Once vaccinated, the immune system is left with a supply of ‘memory’ T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes that will remember how to fight the disease. Therefore, it generally takes 10 to 14 days after administration of the vaccination to be protected from influenza.5

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET VACCINATED AGAINST THE FLU? Everyone should be vaccinated against the flu once every year. This is important because each year the strains in the vaccination change. If a child is under nine years of age and is receiving the influenza vaccine for the first time, they should have two doses of the vaccination at least four weeks apart.

WHO SHOULD GET A FLU VACCINATION? Ideally, everyone should get the flu vaccination, as community immunity or ‘herd immunity’ minimises the spread of infection. Specific groups of people who should be vaccinated against the flu include: • Children • Pregnant women • Immunocompromised

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People • People aged 65 years or older • Health care workers

WHO SHOULDN’T GET A FLU VACCINATION?

IS THE FLU VACCINATION SAFE?

People who shouldn’t get the flu vaccination are:

1. People who have had Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

Yes. In Australia the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulates all medicines including vaccinations.10 The TGA ensure that vaccines are rigorously tested in human clinical trials to confirm they are safe and effective before they are used. Vaccine manufacturers must report information from worldwide vaccine safety monitoring to the TGA and must continually monitor adverse effects that are recorded.11

2. People who are not feeling well on the day of the vaccination.

WHERE CAN I GET A FLU VACCINATION?

1. Children younger than six months of age. 2. People with severe life-threatening allergies to the flu vaccination or any ingredient in the vaccination. Also, people who should talk to their doctor before getting the flu vaccination are:

Side effects can mimic influenza infection which can include symptoms such as, fever, headache, body aches and pains.7 In addition to these side effects, most people experience injection site reactions such as redness, swelling and pain.8

Your local Blooms The Chemist Pharmacist can administer flu vaccinations for people over the age of nine without a booking or prescription, however it’s advisable to call ahead during peak times. After the flu vaccination your Pharmacist will record your vaccination on the Australian Immunisation Register and ask you to remain seated in the pharmacy for 15 minutes in case of any reactions.

It’s also important to note that all influenza vaccinations are latex-free and are safe for individuals who have egg allergies.9 Talk to your healthcare professional if you are concerned about any current or potential side effects.

Selected Blooms The Chemist pharmacies also offer flu clinics run by a qualified nurse, who can administer the vaccine to children over two. You can pre-book your flu clinic spot at bloomsthechemist.com.au/flu-vaccination.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF THE FLU VACCINE?

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GET VACCINATED? In Australia, the flu months are generally between June and September. While protection from the vaccine should last for the whole season, the best protection against the flu occurs within the first three to four months following the vaccination. Therefore, the best time to get vaccinated can be as early as March or April.

CAN YOU GET THE FLU FROM A FLU VACCINE? No, the flu vaccine is inactivated. Therefore, you cannot get the flu from the vaccine, but you may experience flu-like symptoms as a reaction for a short period of time following your injection. This is due to the vaccine activating your immune system to recognise the flu and fight against it. HOW THE ENVIRONMENT

AFFECTS YOUR HEALTH WHILE MARCH 1 IS CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY, BEING ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE IS SOMETHING WE SHOULD BE MINDFUL OF ALL YEAR ROUND. IN ADDITION TO OUR CONSUMPTION HABITS CONTRIBUTING TO SIGNIFICANT WASTE AND STRAIN ON NATURAL RESOURCES, RECENT STUDIES HAVE CONFIRMED THAT OUR EXTERNAL NATURAL ENVIRONMENT DOES HAVE AN IMPACT ON OUR PHYSICAL HEALTH. The Australian Government has identified the health of the Australian population as directly linked to the health of our natural environment.1 Environmental factors impacting our overall wellbeing include air and water quality, extreme weather events and food quality. Prolonged exposure to air pollution contributes to higher morbidity from cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease, including asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and lung cancer.2 Continued exposure to low quality air has been demonstrated to result in higher rates of respiratory hospitalisation amongst children.3 Air pollution has several causes, including the burning of fossil fuels and smoke haze. According to the Australian Burden of Disease Study (ABDS) 2011, “5.9% of the fatal burden due to coronary heart disease and 4.8% of the fatal burden due to stroke was attributable to air pollution (AIHW 2016a; Figure 4.1.1).”4 ‘Extreme weather events’ can also impact our health. Classified as unusual weather occurrences, extreme weather events are influenced by changes to the environment, including increased amounts of waste and pollution. Events include instances of ‘thunderstorm asthma’ (where asthma is triggered by an atypical combination of high pollen and thunderstorms), heatwaves (resulting in increased hospitalisation and heat-stroke related fatalities), drought and bushfires. As seen during the catastrophic fires of late 2019/early 2020, bushfires can impact human health through an increased risk of burns, physical trauma, psychological stress, and respiratory illness in otherwise healthy individuals.5

HOW WE CAN HELP OURSELVES Australians produce 540kg of household waste per person per year6 and in 2017 Australia generated an estimated 67 million tonnes of waste, with only 37% of this being properly recycled.7 Striving towards zero waste can help protect the environment, our resources and, ultimately, our health. The aim of zero waste is to move to a circular economy, where we use and repurpose products for as long as possible instead of disposing of them in landfill. This will avoid an overuse of resources, reducing the amount of waste we create and related toxins emitted into our air and water supplies.

12

Health Check Magazine - ISSUE 15 AUTUMN 2020.indd 12

4/2/20 12:51 pm

Changing the way we approach waste can significantly help create a sustainable future. Simple tweaks to your lifestyle and buying habits can make a huge difference. Plastic straws can be extremely harmful to marine life and other animals. It’s important that we prevent them from clogging up our waterways. You can help by saying no to single-use straws by not taking them from the counter or saying no when you are offered one. If you have to use a straw, buy reusable ones and bring them with you when you are out. Packaging has become a huge problem, with far too much ending up in landfill. The National Packaging Targets are aiming to ensure 100% of Australian packaging is recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2025 or earlier.8 Make a difference by avoiding plastic bags for your next fruit and vegetable shop and bring your own alternative, take a KeepCup with you for your daily coffee and choose cardboard packaging over plastic when you can. Over five million tonnes of food ends up as landfill, enough to fill 9,000 Olympic sized swimming pools.9 But there are easy alternative options that can help limit your food wastage. Meal planning is a great way to save some money, but it also helps the environment. Planning your meals for the week ensures you buy only what you need, ultimately limiting the amount of food waste that you create. Composting your food scraps can also reduce your carbon footprint and significantly reduce the number of items sent to landfill.

One million single-use plastic bottles are sold around the world every minute.10 If left in the environment, these containers can remain there for hundreds of years causing lasting damage. Invest in a reusable water bottle and refuse single-use bottles. Always try to recycle your containers properly, making sure that they are placed in the right bin. It’s also a good idea to pick up any containers you see on the ground and put them in the recycling instead of walking straight past them. REFUSE Refusing things you don’t need, such as junk mail, plastic containers and straws. REDUCE Reduce what you don’t need by decluttering and donating to second-hand stores. REUSE Purchase reuseable items instead of single use products eg. a KeepCup, shopping totes, cloth napkins and glass jars. RECYCLE Recycle items that you can’t refuse, reduce or reuse. Stick to glass, cardboard or metal if you can but avoid plastic. COMPOST Make your own compost bin and add in any food scraps instead of putting them straight into your normal kitchen bin. The next time you are out shopping or at a restaurant, think twice before you reach for that straw or plastic shopping bag. Even simple changes can make a huge difference to the overall health and vitality of ourselves and our world. 1 Australian Government – Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 4.1 Impacts of the natural environment on health, Australia’s Health 2018 2 WHO 2013 3 Barnett AG, Williams GM, Schwartz J, Neller AH, Best TL, Petroeschevsky AL & Simpson RW 2005. TESTING

YOU MAY HAVE INHERITED YOUR MOTHER’S BLUE EYES OR YOUR FATHER’S ATHLETIC ABILITY, BUT THERE ARE OTHER HIDDEN FACTORS THAT MAY HAVE BEEN PASSED DOWN. THIS IS WHERE GENETIC TESTING CAN HELP, DETECTING GENE MUTATIONS WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF DISEASE.

16

Health Check Magazine - ISSUE 15 AUTUMN 2020.indd 16

4/2/20 12:51 pm

Genetic testing can provide essential knowledge and understanding of certain conditions to which you may be predisposed. It is estimated one in 10 people will be adversely affected, directly or indirectly, by a genetic problem during their lifetime.1 Testing can be done with a genetic specialist, likely via a blood test, however a saliva test may be administered depending on the mutation being tested. There are various conditions which can be tested for including, breast and ovarian cancer mutations, cystic fibrosis and Huntington’s disease. Genetic testing can be used for diagnostic purposes for known health conditions with unknown causes and suspected hereditary health conditions such as breast and ovarian cancer. Carrier screening is also a genetic test that’s used to determine whether a person is a carrier of a recessive genetic disease and can be used if the person is considering pregnancy. According to Jan Mumford, Executive Director of Genetic Alliance Australia, “Genetic testing enables people to receive information about the treatment options for their condition and make decisions that suit them and their families.”

Genetic Alliance Australia provides referrals, assistance, information and counselling to people affected by genetic conditions. Genetic testing can have an emotional and financial impact on the individual, and it’s important to discuss all of the risks and benefits involved with undergoing professional genetic testing. Genetic testing can remove uncertainty about whether you or a family member have a certain genetic mutation. This can help you make more informed decisions about your health. Also, by diagnosing a genetic condition, appropriate prevention, monitoring and treatment options can be explored. Results can also provide further information when planning for future children. Talk to your doctor or genetic counsellor if you’re considering undertaking testing. They will provide you with all the necessary information and talk through the benefits and risks of testing. It’s also a good idea to talk to your family before you get tested; they may be able to provide any more information of which may have been unaware. KEY FINDINGS FOR A SUCCESSFUL WORK-LIFE BALANCE LIVING A WELL-BALANCED LIFE CAN SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE A CHALLENGE, WITH EVERY MINUTE OF YOUR DAY FULL OF THINGS TO TICK OFF ON YOUR TO-DO LIST. WHILE THERE IS NO MAGICAL SOLUTION TO ACHIEVING THE PERFECT WORK-LIFE BALANCE, THERE ARE SOME PRACTICES THAT MAY HELP TOWARDS SUSTAINING THAT DELICATE JUGGLING ACT.

18

Get moving Exercise may seem like a chore to some, but researchers have found that it plays a role in how individuals feel they can manage their work-life balance.1 "Individuals who exercised regularly were more confident that they could handle the interaction of their work and home life, and were less likely to be stressed at work," says Russell Clayton, lead author on the research paper ‘Want a better work-life balance? Exercise, study finds.’ The idea does sound counterintuitive, as we are adding something else into our already overloaded day. But Clayton asserts, “we think exercise is a way to psychologically detach from work - you're not there physically and you're not thinking about it either - and, furthermore, it can help us feel good about ourselves."

Power down Another approach to achieving that coveted work-life balance is detaching yourself from work. YoungAh Park, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Kansas State University, believes people who are able to unplug from work activities when off the job experience lower levels of fatigue and job burnout.2

“They also have higher levels of positive emotions and life satisfaction than those who remain connected to work-related tasks and matters outside of normal work hours,” Park says. Park recommends setting self-regulated rules for work-related communication when you clock off. It’s also important to build appropriate expectations and boundaries around availability outside of business hours.

Make a date with yourself While the concept of taking some ‘me-time’ may seem foreign to some, research suggests that it’s beneficial for all facets of life. High quality me-time is said to not only improve your psychological wellbeing, but it can also make you a more engaged employee.3 A study from the British Psychological Society involved professionals completing a daily diary on their perceptions and experiences of me-time.4 Results suggest that people who experience high-quality alone time benefit from greater psychological wellbeing, improved family relationships and greater performance at work.5 Implementing some of these practices to balance the scales may help you to find that work-life sweet spot. 1 "Want a better work-life balance? ASTHMA IN

AUTUMN ASTHMA IS A CONDITION THAT AFFECTS THE AIRWAYS, MAKING IT HARDER TO BREATHE. AROUND 2.7 MILLION AUSTRALIANS ARE LIVING WITH ASTHMA.1 THE CHANGING OF THE SEASONS CAN BRING ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL SHIFTS, CONTRIBUTING TO THE INFLUX OF ALLERGIES AND ASTHMA SYMPTOMS.

Allergic asthma occurs when allergens trigger symptoms, causing inflammation and making it harder for people to breathe. 2

Symptoms can include wheezing, shortness of breath and chest pain. Common triggers of allergic asthma include mould, pets and pollen. Other irritants such as scented candles, cigarette smoke and bonfires can also cause distress to the airways, plus seasonal environmental changes, such as drier cooler air in Autumn, can also act as a respiratory irritant.3 While there is no cure for asthma, there are ways to manage and reduce symptoms. It’s important to have an Asthma Action Plan in place, as this will help you to understand and manage your condition. An Asthma Action Plan should include: • The date, and your name and the name of the doctor or other health professional who prepared the plan. • A list of your usual asthma medications including doses and directions. • Instructions on what to do when your asthma worsens eg. when to take an extra dose or extra medications, when to contact the doctor and when to go to the emergency department. • What to do in an asthma emergency.

The goal of asthma treatment is to achieve the best possible level of asthma control with the lowest amount of treatment. Your doctor may prescribe a number of treatments which could include inhalers such as preventers and/or relievers, add-on medications (inhalers or tablets) or oral corticosteroids in short courses. To ensure you are using your inhalers correctly, your Blooms The Chemist Pharmacist can help with your inhaler technique and identify if a spacer is necessary. Poor asthma symptom control is often due to incorrect inhaler technique; therefore, your Pharmacist will show you how to use the device correctly so that you can get the most out of your inhaler. When a spacer is used alongside an inhaler it is easier for the lungs to absorb more of the medicine. Therefore, it is much better to use a spacer and inhaler together. It is important to note that only inhalers can be used with spacers, but your Pharmacist will be able to direct you on the most suitable spacer for your medication. Next time you visit your local Blooms The Chemist to get your asthma medication, ask your Pharmacist about an Asthma Action Plan and correct inhaler technique. 1

THE BENEFITS OF

DONATING YOUR TIME

ARE YOU LOOKING TO TAKE ON A NEW CHALLENGE OR TO SIMPLY GIVE BACK TO YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY? VOLUNTEERING IS A GREAT WAY TO GET INVOLVED AND TRULY HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.

Health Check Magazine - ISSUE 15 AUTUMN 2020.indd 22

HEALTH BENEFITS Volunteering can positively impact physical health, as well as increase empathy, mental health and altruistic behaviour. These are linked to improvements in cardiovascular health, with previous studies indicating factors such as stress, depression and wellbeing play a role in the development of cardiovascular disease.1 According to the Rotman Research Institute, older adults who stay active by volunteering receive a welcome health boost.2 Along with reductions in symptoms of depression and fewer functional limitations, the study suggests that volunteering also improves overall health and can help improve longevity.3

EMOTIONAL BENEFITS Along with health benefits there are many social and practical advantages that come from donating your time, providing not only short-term effects but long-term positive consequences. Volunteering can help to foster unique connections, building relationships that provide the opportunity to interact and learn from a diverse range of people, spanning different generations and cultures. If you’re finding it hard to cultivate a sense of purpose or fulfilment in your life, then volunteering may just be what you need. According to Dr Faiza Tabassum of the University of Southampton regular volunteering helps contribute to the maintenance of social networks, and may provide a sense of purpose, particularly for those people who have lost their earning.4 Gratitude has become a powerful tool in helping us recognise the positives in our life. Volunteering can be a way to really develop a sense of gratitude, changing your perspective on life by reminding how lucky you truly are to be in a position to help and connect with others.

CAREER BENEFITS Volunteering is also a great way to upskill, especially if you’re considering a career change or looking to add more job skills to your repertoire. Gaining valuable experience by planning a charity event can help boost your organisational and leadership skills. Committing to a volunteer shift each week demonstrates commitment and dedication. Providing leadership or tutoring can indicate patience and an effective communication style, whilst becoming a SES (State Emergency Service) volunteer requires a cooperative nature, as teamwork is a vital aspect of the job. All these skills are extremely valuable and will serve you well regardless of the job you choose.

We’ve put together a list to help you discover different types of volunteering opportunities; • Helping the elderly by gardening, reading or shopping • Volunteering with homeless shelters • Tutoring non-English-speaking people • Helping out at second-hand shops like Lifeline or The Salvation Army • Fostering or helping to train service dogs • Becoming a delivery driver for Meals on Wheels • Becoming a SES (State Emergency Service) volunteer • Becoming a mentor for a foster child • Volunteering with Make-A-Wish Australia • Helping to organise an event for a charity that is close to your heart

• Volunteering at an animal rescue shelter • Participating in a clean-up day at your local national park, river or beach • Volunteering at your local library or hospital • Creating something that can be donated to a charity, such as a baby blanket for premature babies • Volunteering to help create a community garden • Creating care packages for firefighters or other emergency services personnel • Volunteering to coach your local sports team • Participating in an event such as Relay for Life or the Mother’s Day Classic • Volunteering at a crisis line centre

OUR PEOPLE, OUR COMMUNITY

ORANGE, NSW

EMMA TURNBULL HAS A BUSY SCHEDULE. ON MONDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS SHE SPLITS HER TIME BETWEEN LIVE BETTER, A NOTFOR-PROFIT COMMUNITY SERVICE ORGANISATION, AND HER JOB AT BLOOMS THE CHEMIST ORANGE. MONDAY EVENINGS ARE RESERVED FOR BOWLING AT ORANGE TENPIN BOWL AND FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHTS ARE FOR DANCING WITH FRIENDS AT A LOCAL CLUB.

“She’s a great dancer. She’s got all the moves!” says mum Amarie. “She’s such a social butterfly; I’m always struggling to keep up with her activities.” Emma has lived in the NSW town of Orange for most of her life, sharing a home with her mum and stepdad. She has an incredibly close relationship with her mum, describing her as “my best friend”. “She helps me with my independence and how I talk”, says Emma. “And she’s always there for me when I need her.” “I’ve always taught her that. I’m her best friend and I promised her I’d always be there”, Amarie says. “From day one she was so undeniably special and she’s always loved the limelight. Since she was born

In addition to the time she spends at Live Better, Emma’s job at Blooms The Chemist Orange keeps her connected to the community, greeting customers, helping with stock and cleaning. Blooms The Chemist Orange Pharmacist-owner Melanie Moses loves that Emma has added her unique sparkle to the team and store culture. “Our customers have been so keen and really embraced having Emma on the team. They always take the time to see how she’s going and how she’s getting on with her work.” Emma loves to bowl

she’s been in the paper multiple times. She also loves dancing and modelling; she’s never been shy.” ‘I was also in the paper for our deb ball- there’s a photo of me on the front page in my dress; I bought it at one of the shops here in town”, says Emma proudly. “As soon as she walked in with that dress and her makeup and hair done… whoah! Tissues out, I teared up!” laughs Amarie. “I’m very proud; I’m just a proud mum. Proud from as soon as I had her.” Emma loves to shop, regularly hitting the stores in town to try on the latest styles and indulge in a treat from one of Orange’s numerous cafes and restaurants. A natural extrovert, she has a large group of friends who live locally. “Being happy is when I’m with my friends. I do have a good group of friends, including my best friend Shakira. We hang out at Live Better and go to lunch or bowling. I’ve been friends with her for two years and she’s amazing.”

“Being independent is really important for Emma. There was a period where she wasn’t working, and she was so upset. My heart was breaking”, recalls Amarie. “Since she started working again, we’re just seeing happiness now. For any of your children you want to see them happy and get ahead in life. This job at Blooms has just been a big change. I love seeing her so keen to get up and going in the morning.” Despite her regular shopping sprees, Emma has a plan for her pay checks. “I like to save for my future. I’m saving to have my own home and settle down with a dog first, until I meet someone special who loves me for who I am. Mum’s still hanging onto me though!” “I’m just being a mum!” Amarie laughs. “I do try to hold onto her but she’s just unstoppable! You amaze me, Em.”

CELEBRATE WORLD WISH DAY WITH US ON APRIL 29! WORLD WISH DAY CELEBRATES THE FIRST EVER WISH, GRANTED TO SEVEN YEAR OLD CHRIS GREICIUS IN 1980. CHRIS’ WISH INSPIRED THE CREATION OF THE ORIGINAL MAKE-A-WISH ORGANISATION. SINCE THEN, THE MAKE-A-WISH COMMUNITY HAS GRANTED OVER 480,000 WISHES AROUND THE WORLD.

Blooms The Chemist Su pport Office a dress-up party for W orld Wish Da held y 2018.

Make-A-Wish® Australia has now granted over 10,000 unforgettable wishes all over the country, but they can’t do it alone. We’re incredibly proud of our partnership with Make-A-Wish, working to raise over $700,000 since 2016. With your support, we’ve helped to send kids to the moon, made unicorns fly and ensured Australia's youngest ever Cricket Captain could don the baggy green. One of Australia’s most trusted charities, Make-A-Wish Australia is the only registered Australian charity focusing exclusively on wishes. Their wishes complement medical treatment – working to calm, distract and empower sick kids at the time they need it most. When a wish is realised, a child discovers that despite their situation, anything is possible.

World Wish Day is a day of recognition of the awesome things we’ve achieved together, and a reminder that there are so many more wishes we are yet to grant. In Australia today, the latest medical guidelines suggest more than 9,500 children are living with a life-threatening illness,1 with thousands more diagnosed each year. Granting 500 wishes a year on average, Make-A-Wish Australia are reliant on our community support to grant a wish for every child facing critical illness.

MARCH SLEEP APNOEA One in four Australian adults are at risk of developing sleep apnoea with the condition affecting approximately 10% of females and 25% of males.1 Sleep apnoea can affect anyone, though your risk is higher if you are obese, over 65 years of age or have a family history of the condition. Symptoms can include snoring, constant irritability or falling asleep during the day.2 For the month of March, Blooms The Chemist has half price sleep studies; ask the team at your local Blooms The Chemist for more information on this condition and testing options.

APRIL FLU PREVENTION Administered by a qualified health professional, chat with us about the best time for you to pop into your local Blooms The Chemist for your flu vaccination.

MAY IRON SCREENING AND FLU PREVENTION Adequate iron is essential for the optimal functioning of red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body. Low iron levels can lead to fatigue, breathlessness, decreased immunity and anaemia. For the iron testing procedure, your Pharmacist will draw a blood sample from your fingertip and place the sample on the test strip. Come in-store to check your total iron levels at your local Blooms The Chemist.
