Translation and Modernity

Ghareeb Iskander, Imam Musa al Kadhim College, Iraq This is the first study to examine the Arabic translations of a number of major modern poems in the English language, in particular T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land and Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself. With case studies dedicated to the Arab translators who were themselves modernist poets, including Badr Shakir al-Sayyab and Saadi Yusuf, Ghareeb Iskander brings a reading of the translations as literary works in their own right. Revealing why the Arab modernists were drawn to these poems through situational context, Iskander shows that the influence exerted by the English originals stems from the creative manner in which the Arab poet-translators converted them into their own language. Muhammad ‘Abduh

Modern Islam and the Culture of Ambiguity Oliver Scharbrodt, University of Birmingham, UK Provides a complete intellectual biography of Muhammad ‘Abduh (1849-1905), one of the most influential Muslim modernist reformers of the 19th century. The book adopts a biographical approach in order to delineate his intellectual formation as a reformer and to illustrate significant developments and breaks throughout his life. By using new sources – in particular his writings from his early politically activist career – the book illustrates ‘Abduh’s complex intellectual formation and the various traditional religious, philosophical and cultural influences that shaped him. Writing Queer Identities in Morocco

Abdellah Taïa and Moroccan Committed Literature Tina Dransfeldt Christensen, Roskilde University, Denmark This book explores queer identity in Morocco through the work of author and LGBT activist Abdellah Taïa, who defied the country’s anti-homosexuality laws by publicly coming out in 2006. Placing key novels such as Salvation Army and Infidels in dialogue with Moroccan writers including Driss Chraïbi and Abdelkebir Khatibi, the author shows how Taïa draws upon a long tradition of politically committed art in Morocco to subvert traditional notions of heteronormativity. By foregrounding silenced or otherwise marginalised voices, she shows how his writings offer a powerful critique of discourses of class, authenticity, culture and nationality in Morocco and North Africa. State, Society and Islam in the Western Regions of the Sahara

Regional Interactions and Social Change Edited by Francisco Freire, NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Portugal

M I D D L E E A S T S T U D I E S – Literature / Islamic Studies

English Poetry and Modern Arabic Verse

This open access book takes a deeper and broader perspective on the Hassaniya speaking peoples’ struggle for self-determination in the Western Sahara. So far, in-depth understanding and analysis remains neglected and little work has been undertaken on the diverse experiences of the Hassaniya and the contrasting political regimes under which they live. This book examines the complex and ambiguous relations between statehood, Islam, nation building and identity formation in hassanophone northwest Africa. Contributors present new analysis and up-to-date fieldwork to provide an inside perspective on these populations and their regional interactions, shedding new light on the region.
