Middle East Studies

Translation and Modernity

Ghareeb Iskander, Imam Musa al Kadhim College, Iraq This is the first study to examine the Arabic translations of a number of major modern poems in the English language, in particular T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land and Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself. With case studies dedicated to the Arab translators who were themselves modernist poets, including Badr Shakir al-Sayyab and Saadi Yusuf, Ghareeb Iskander brings a reading of the translations as literary works in their own right. Revealing why the Arab modernists were drawn to these poems through situational context, Iskander shows that the influence exerted by the English originals stems from the creative manner in which the Arab poet-translators converted them into their own language.

Muhammad ‘Abduh

Modern Islam and the Culture of Ambiguity

Oliver Scharbrodt, University of Birmingham, UK Provides a complete intellectual biography of Muhammad ‘Abduh (1849-1905), one of the most influential Muslim modernist reformers of the 19th century. The book adopts a biographical approach in order to delineate his intellectual formation as a reformer and to illustrate significant developments and breaks throughout his life. By using new sources – in particular his writings from his early politically activist career – the book illustrates ‘Abduh’s complex intellectual formation and the various traditional religious, philosophical and cultural influences that shaped him.

Tina Dransfeldt Christensen, Roskilde University, Denmark This book explores queer identity in Morocco through the work of author and LGBT activist Abdellah Taïa, who defied the country’s anti-homosexuality laws by publicly coming out in 2006. Placing key novels such as Salvation Army and Infidels in dialogue with Moroccan writers including Driss Chraïbi and Abdelkebir Khatibi, the author shows how Taïa draws upon a long tradition of politically committed art in Morocco to subvert traditional notions of heteronormativity. By foregrounding silenced or otherwise marginalised voices, she shows how his writings offer a powerful critique of discourses of class, authenticity, culture and nationality in Morocco and North Africa.

State, Society and Islam in the Western Regions of the Sahara

Regional Interactions and Social Change

Edited by Francisco Freire, NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Portugal This open access book takes a deeper and broader perspective on the Hassaniya speaking peoples’ struggle for self-determination in the Western Sahara. So far, in-depth understanding and analysis remains neglected and little work has been undertaken on the diverse experiences of the Hassaniya and the contrasting political regimes under which they live. This book examines the complex and ambiguous relations between statehood, Islam, nation building and identity formation in hassanophone northwest Africa. Contributors present new analysis and up-to-date fieldwork to provide an inside perspective on these populations and their regional interactions, shedding new light on the region.

The Politics of Engaged Gender Research in the Arab Region

Feminist Fieldwork and the Production of Knowledge

Edited by Suad Joseph, University of California, Davis, USA, Lena Meari, Birzeit University, Palestine & Zeina Zaatari, University of Illinois, USA How is knowledge on women and gender produced in the Arab region when it is undertaken by Arab women researchers? Through a critical examination of local fieldwork experiences, the contributors of the volume - who are Arab women researchers themselves - answer this question. The book examines the specific structural conditions that shape people’s lives in the Arab region and contributors assess their own daily lives and the practices of their field. They challenge the dominant discourses in academia and provide a methodology of ‘engaged gender research’ which rejects ‘Arab exceptionalism’ and challenges liberal feminisms.

Richard Burton, T.E. Lawrence and the Culture of Homoerotic Desire

Orientalist Depictions of Arab Sexuality

Feras Alkabani, University of Sussex, UK In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Arabspeaking regions of the Ottoman Empire saw crucial changes in attitudes towards sexuality. However, contemporary Orientalists such as Sir Richard Burton and T.E. Lawrence were oblivious to certain aspects of these shifts. By comparing their autobiographical accounts of the Arab Orient with contemporary Arabic literature, Feras Alkabani exposes this critical disparity in cross-cultural portrayals of sexual morality and homoerotic desire. His detailed comparative study reveals the significance of homoerotic desire within Orientalist and Arab literary discourses.

Legacies and Consequences of the Fight for Independence

Edited by H.A Hellyer, Royal United Services Institute, UK & Robert Springborg, Naval Postgraduate School, USA The 1919 Egyptian revolution was the founding event for modern Egypt’s nation state and is imprinted in the country’s collective memory. This is the first text that brings together chapters examining the causes, consequences and legacies of the revolution. Egyptian and non-Egyptian scholars examine a range of topics linking back to that crucial event in Egyptian history, including the causes and course of the 1919 revolution, its impacts on subsequent political beliefs, practices and institutions, and its legacy today.

Photography in Erzerum, Harput, Van and Beyond

David Low, AGBU Nubar Library, Paris, France This book examines photographic activity in three cities on the Armenian plateau: Erzurum, Kharpert and Van. It explores how indigenous photography was rooted in the seismic social, political and cultural shifts that shaped Armenian lives during the Ottoman Empire’s last four decades. Arguing that photographic practice was marked by the era’s central movements, it shows how photography was bound-up in Armenian educational endeavours, mass migration and revolutionary activity. Photography responded to and became the instrument of these phenomena, so much so that they were responsible for the spread of the medium through the Armenian communities of the Ottoman East and the rapid increase in photographic studios.

Competing Ideologies in the Late Ottoman Empire and Early Turkish Republic

Selected Writings of Islamist, Turkist, and Westernist Intellectuals

Ahmet Seyhun, University of Winnipeg, Canada The second constitutional period of the Ottoman Empire and the early decades of the Turkish republic were a hotbed of new and competing ideas which dramatically shaped the development of the modern nation that followed. This book includes translations of and introductions to some of the key Turkish writers of the age, including Namik Kemal, Ziya Gökalp, Abdullah Cevdet and Ahmed Riza. Presented with contextualizing introductions, these texts reveal the Turkish intellectual milieu out of which Mustafa Kemal's ideas were to emerge and ultimately dominate.

The Alawis of Modern Turkey

History, Identity and Politics

Hakan Mertcan This volume charts the history, identity-formation and politics of the Arab 'Alawis of Turkey. It examines the attitudes to the 'Alawis in the early years of the Turkish Republic and the one party era, wherein, as with other religious and ethnic minorities, 'Turkification' policies led to the suppression of 'Alawi identity. It also explores the multi-party period when 'Sunnification' policies lead to further suppression, culminating in more assimilationist policies under the junta of the 1980s. Throughout, Hakan Mertcan draws on fieldwork surveys and new research in the Turkish state archives to offer various perspectives on the relationship between the 'Alawis and the state, and the evolution of 'Alawi political identity this gave rise to. Religious Reform in the Late Ottoman Empire

Institutional Change and the Professionalisation of the Ulema

Erhan Bektas, Üsküdar University, Turkey Drawing upon Ottoman state archives and the institutional archives of the ulema, this study challenges the narrative of the decline of the Ottoman ulema, showing they instead underwent a process of professionalisation as part of the Tanzimat reforms. Outlining transformations in the office of the Sheikh ul-islam, the leading Ottoman Sunni Muslim cleric, the book presents a detailed portrait of the lives of individual ulema, charting their education and professional and social lives. Erhan Bektas shows they played a key role in the empire’s efforts to centralise the state by acting as intermediaries between the government and social groups.

Police Reform in Turkey

Human Security, Gender and State Violence Under Erdogan

Funda Hulagu How has the supposedly liberalizing project of police reform in Turkey become central to the increasingly authoritarian regime of Erdogan's AKP Party? Engaging political theory and a gender studies perspective, this book traces the implementation of security sector reform in Turkey, showing how various agents, including Islamist policy-makers, Turkish police and the women's movement in Turkey have contributed to and resisted growing police powers. This is a timely intervention on the ‘authoritarian turn’ in Turkey and contributes to a growing number of studies of neoliberalism and security in the context of liberal internationalism. The Rise and Fall of an Empire

Touraj Daryaee, University of California, Irvine, USA Of profound importance in late antiquity, the Sasanian Empire is virtually unknown today, except as a counterpoint to the Roman Empire. The last of the great ancient Persian empires and founded by Ardashir l in 224 CE, the Sasanian Empire was the dominant force in the Middle East for several centuries until its last king, Yazdgerd lll, was defeated by the Muslim Arabs in the seventh century. In this highly readable history, Touraj Daryaee fills a significant gap in our knowledge of world history. This second edition examines the Sasanians' complex and colourful narrative and demonstrates their unique significance, not only for the development of Iranian civilization but also for Roman and Islamic history.

Classical Sanskrit Tragedy

The Concept of Suffering and Pathos in Medieval India

Bihani Sarkar, University of Oxford, UK Here, in the first study of tragedy in classical Sanskrit literature, Bihani Sarkar draws on a wide range of Sanskrit dramas, poems and treatises – much of it translated for the first time into English – to provide a complete history of the tragic in Indian literature, from the second to the tenth centuries. Looking at Kalidasa, the most celebrated writer of Sanskrit poetry and drama (kavya), this book argues that constructions of absence and grief are central to Kalidasa’s compositions and that these ‘tragic middles’ are more sophisticated than previously understood. Sarkar uses close textual analysis to respond to other questions such as: what were the early Indians’ attitudes towards the tragic? How and why did these change over time? How do these intersect with and reflect Indian religious traditions?

Representing PostRevolutionary Iran

Captivity, Neo-Orientalism, and Resistance in Iranian–American Life Writing

Hossein Nazari, University of Tehran, Iran This book analyses the processes of production, promotion, and reception of memoirs of diasporic Iranian-American authors. It provides new perspectives on key examples of the genre such as Betty Mahmoody’s Not Without My Daughter, Azar Nafisi’s Reading Lolita in Tehran and Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. Hossein Nazari places these texts in their social and political contexts, tracing their origins within the trope of the America captivity narrative, and critically unearths their neo-Orientalist tendencies within. The book analyses the structural means by which stereotypes about Islam and women in the Islamic Republic in these narratives are privileged by news media and the creative industries, while also charting a growing number of counterhegemonic memoirs which challenge these narratives by representing more nuanced accounts of life in Iran after 1979.

History of the Arab Invasions: The Conquest of the Lands

A New Translation of al-Baladhuri's Futuh al-Buldan

Ahmad b. Yahya al-Baladhuri Translated by Hugh Kennedy, SOAS, University of London, UK This is perhaps the most important single source for the history of the great Arab conquests in the 6th and 7th centuries. A historian working at the court of the Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad, al-Baladhuri preserved accounts not found anywhere else, containing a wealth of information about government, land-holding and economic developments. This new translation, fully annotated with a scholarly apparatus and commentary on places, events and individuals mentioned, finally makes a key source on the Arab conquests available in English.

Trust in Divided Societies

State, Institutions and Governance in Lebanon, Syria and Palestine

Abdalhadi M. Alijla, Orient-Institute Beirut (OIB), Lebanon In many societies, 'generalized trust', that is, trust in other members of society, appears to be low. This book looks at the concept of generalized trust and examines why some countries are more divided and prone to the collapse of social trust than others. Alijla draws on his experience as an analyst to look at three case studies – Lebanon, Syria and Palestine – focusing in each example on how trust breaks down, and the ensuing consequences. The author examines the basis for treating trust as a commodity in society, alongside and connected to wealth, opportunity and democratic institutions.

Edited by Fatma Müge Göçek, University of Michigan, USA & Gamze Evcimen, Eastern Michigan University, USA This handbook reshapes studies on the Middle East by framing our knowledge of the region within the scope of sociologists’ chosen perspectives on it. To do this, the handbook’s 52 chapters trace their key contributions. The global approach and wide-ranging topics represent how sociologists enable us to redefine the boundaries and identities of the Middle East today. The volume is divided into four parts to cover social transformations and social conflict; sociologists’ findings on the region’s economic, religious and political activities; sociologists’ attention to people’s everyday practices; and sociologists’ work on the diasporas from the Middle East.

Law, Politics and Giorgio Agamben in the Middle East

Edited by Simon Mabon, University of Lancaster, UK, Sanaa Al Sarghali, An-Najah UniversityNablus, Palestine & Adel Ruished, Lancaster University, UK This book uses a multi-disciplinary approach to explore the application of the work of philosopher Giorgio Agamben to the Middle East after the Arab Uprisings, considering the evolution of regime-society relations that ultimately erupted in violence in the early months of 2011. Agamben’s ideas of the state of exception and bare life provide important intellectual tools to understand the nature of sovereignty and the regulation of life, which has largely been missing in the study of the region.

The Untold Story of the Golan Heights

Occupation, Colonisation and Jawlani Resistance

Edited by Michael Mason, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), UK, Munir Fakher Eldin, Birzeit University, Palestine & Muna Dajani, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), UK Sometimes characterised as the ‘forgotten occupation’, the western Golan Heights have been transformed by Israeli colonisation, via the appropriation of land and water resources, economic development and extensive military use. This landmark volume is the first academic study in English of Arab politics and culture in the occupied Golan Heights. It focuses on an indigenous community, known as the Jawlanis, and their resistance to settler colonisation. The book brings together Jawlani, Palestinian and UK researchers and adopts an innovative format, with shorter ‘reflections’ responding to traditional academic chapters.

Religious Minorities in Iraq

Co-Existence, Faith and Recovery after ISIS

Maria Rita Corticelli, International University of Erbil, Iraq The religious minorities of Iraq suffered immense violence at the hands of ISIS and are now trying to rebuild their lives. In their own words, and based on interviews with over 100 people, this book tells their stories. Covering the experiences of the Christians, Kakais, Yezidis, Sunni Muslims and Shabaks, amongst others, the research reveals how the different communities narrate their beliefs and deal with life in the aftermath of ISIS. This is the first book to illustrate how a strong network between the minorities operates in an effort to peacefully coexist, based on their shared experience of persecution and oppression.

Dalit Theology, Boundary Crossings, and Liberation in India

A Biblical and Postcolonial Study

Jobymon Skaria, The Malankara Syrian Orthodox Theological Seminary, India Here an Indian St Thomas Christian Scholar, offers a critique of Indian Christian theology and suggests that constructive dialogues between biblical and dissenting Dalit voices – such as Chokhamela, Karmamela, Ravidas, Kabir, Nandanar and Narayana Guru – could set right the imbalance within Dalit theology, and could establish dialogical partnerships between Dalit Theologians, non-Dalit Christians and Syrian Christians. Drawing on Biblical and sociohistorical resources, this book examines worldviews which would empower the Dalits in their everyday existences.

Escaping the Conflict Trap

Toward Ending Civil War in the Middle East

Edited by Ross Harrison & Paul Salem, Middle East Institute, USA What pathways are there to ending the current civil wars in the Middle East? This volume brings together academics, experts, and practitioners to explore this question. The book covers the history of civil wars in the region during the 20th century, shows how civil wars can be resolved, and then examines the specific causes, drivers, and dynamics of the ongoing civil wars in Syria, Yemen, Libya, Afghanistan, and Iraq. The book argues there are patterns to the civil wars in the Middle East that should impact policymaking in the future, which in turn can work toward ultimate resolutions.

US-Egypt Diplomacy under Johnson

Nasser, Komer, and the Limits of Personal Diplomacy

Gabriel Glickman, Bar-Ilan University, Israel Brings to light the diplomatic efforts of Robert Komer, a now little known figure, who through strategy and realpolitik was able to have an outsized influence over American foreign policy towards Egypt. While Kennedy and Komer saw the benefit of having good relations with Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, JFK's successor Johnson did not. Ultimately, the administration was left with people who did not share Kennedy/ Komer’s enthusiasm for good relations with Egypt. In light of this the book chronicles three distinctive phases in U.S.-Egyptian relations under Johnson leading up to the outbreak of the June 1967 ArabIsraeli War - when Nasser suddenly reneged on his understanding with Kennedy. It reveals a new perspective on the causes of a war which changed the face of the Middle East.
