The Sequence Approach

“It’s important for people to understand that the screenplay’s essential role in film making is the same regardless of the genre of the film.” John Landis

Paul Joseph Gulino

For the first time ever, this book offers a detailed analysis of the horror genre, including its subgenres, tropes and the specific requirements of the horror screenplay. Screenplays and genres discussed include the German Expressionism of Nosferatu to the Universal franchises of the 30s (Frankenstein), to Sci-Fi (Psycho), the Slasher film franchise (Friday 13th), Asian Horror, horror verite (Blair Witch) and torture porn (Saw). It also includes step-by-step writing exercises, annotated extracts from horror screenplays and interviews with seasoned writers/ directors/producers discussing budget restrictions, screenplay form and formulas and how screenplays work during shooting.

A screenplay can be understood as being built of sequences of about fifteen Pages each, and by focusing on solving the dramatic aspects of each of these sequences in detail, a writer can more easily conquer the challenges posed by the script as a whole. The sequence approach has its foundation in early Hollywood cinema and has been used effectively at such film schools as the University of Southern California, Columbia and Chapman University. This book provides a sequence analysis of eleven feature films: The Shop Around The Corner, Double Indemnity, Nights of Cabiria, North By Northwest, Lawrence of Arabia, The Graduate, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Toy Story, Air Force One, Being John Malkovich, and The Fellowship of the Ring.

Screenwriting from Citizen Kane to Midnight in Paris Mark Axelrod This book provides a more analytical treatment of certain individual scenes and how those scenes were constructed to be the most highly dramatic vis á vis their dialogue. In the art of screenwriting, one cannot separate how the scene is constructed from how the dialogue is written. Using case studies from the last 70 years, each chapter deals with how a particular screenwriter approached dialogue relative to that particular scene’s construction. MARK AXELROD is a Professor of English & Comparative Literature at Chapman University, and Director of the John Fowles Center for Creative Writing, USA.
