An Inquiry into the Philosophical Concept of Scholê

Aesthetic Themes in Pagan and Christian Neoplatonism

Leisure as a Political End

From Plotinus to Gregory of Nyssa

Kostas Kalimtzis, Arcadia University, Greece

Daniele Iozzia, University of Catania, Italy

Though the ancient Greek philosophical concept of scholê is usually translated as ‘leisure’, there is a vast difference between the two terms. This book argues that Aristotle's proposition that musical play was the quintessential activity of a leisured citizenry in a just republic, is key to our understanding the concepts of leisure that we have inherited from the intellectuals of the Hellenistic and Roman empires and the early Church Fathers. Cleopatra's Needles The Lost Obelisks of Egypt

This book reconstructs the aesthetic philosophical views of Late Antiquity, and their relation to artistic production of the time. By examining the resonance of Plotinus’ thought with contemporary artists and with Christian thinkers, including Gregory of Nyssa, the book demonstrates the importance of Plotinus’ treatise On Beauty for the development of late ancient aesthetics. The Cappadocian fathers’ interest in Plotinus is explored, as well as the consequent legacy of the pagan thinker’s philosophy within Christian thought, such as the concept of beauty and the narration of the contemplative experience. Bob Brier, Long Island University, USA "Mr. Brier tells these stories with panache and with authority. His cast of characters-pharaohs, emperors, popes, engineers, Egyptologists and millionaires-can hardly be beat." Wall Street Journal In the half-century between 1831 and 1881 three massive obelisks left Egypt, bound for Paris, London and New York. With no records of how obelisks had been moved in the past, the engineers entrusted with transporting them across oceans had to invent new methods, and they were far from certain that they would work. The world held its breath. Bob Brier recreates a turbulent era, caught up in obelisk mania, with astounding tales of engineering dexterity and naval endurance that will fascinate all those interested in Egypt, its iconic monuments and the history of great endeavour. Foreigners in Ancient Egypt Theban Tomb Paintings from the Early Eighteenth Dynasty Flora Brooke Anthony, Georgia State University, USA This volume analyses the way early 18th dynasty tombs made a new presentation of foreigners. Previously depicted as symbols of chaos, now they are shown in an orderly fashion, carrying tribute that underscores the wealth and prestige of the tomb owner. This orderliness reflects the ability of the Egyptian state to impose order on foreign lands, but also crucially symbolises the tomb owner’s ability to overcome the chaos of death and achieve a successful afterlife. This important and original study is illustrated with colour plates that show the paintings in all their glory, as well as black-and-white images. The Egyptian Oracle Project Ancient Ceremony in Augmented Reality Edited by Robyn Gillam, York University, Canada & Jeffrey Jacobson, PublicVR, Boston, USA For more than 2,000 years, the Egyptian processional oracle was one of the main points of contact between temple-based religion and the general population: in a public ceremony, a god would indicate its will or answer questions through the movements of a portable cult statue. The Egyptian Oracle Project reenacts the oracle using virtual reality and live performance and this book's collection of essays provides vital background to the path-breaking project, introducing educational theatre and virtual reality, describing the ancient ceremony and its development, and exploring the virtual temple setting and the wider implications of this project for virtual heritage.
