Greek Tragedy

The Plays of Aeschylus

Themes and Contexts

A. F. Garvie, University of Glasgow, UK

Laura Swift, The Open University, UK This book offers a much-needed up-to-date introduction to Greek tragedy, and covers the most important thematic topics studied at school or university level. After a brief analysis of the genre and main figures, it focuses on the broader questions of what defines tragedy, what its particular preoccupations are, and what makes these texts so widely studied and performed more than 2,000 years after they were written. As such, the book will be of interest to students taking broad courses on Greek tragedy, while also being suitable for the general reader who wants an overview of the subject. The Plays of Sophocles A. F. Garvie, University of Glasgow, UK The emphasis throughout this book, ideal for undergraduate students, is on Sophocles' tragic thinking, on the concept of the 'Sophoclean hero', and on the dramatic structure of the plays. The seven extant plays, Ajax, Women of Trachis, Antigone, Oedipus the King, Electra, Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonus are assessed and a brief concluding chapter draws together what has been said in the seven studies. This second edition has been revised fully, with an updated further reading list and more detailed information on the chorus and staging of the plays. Democracy in Classical Athens Christopher Carey For two centuries classical Athens enjoyed almost uninterrupted democratic government. This book traces the development and operation of the political system and explores its underlying principles. With a new chapter covering religion and updates throughout, this second edition benefits from the inclusion of the latest research and recent archaeological findings in Athens. A clearer structure and layout make the book more accessible to students, as do extra images and maps, along with a timeline of key events. This excellent introduction to the six extant plays of Aeschylus is fully revised and updated, with additional further reading, ideal for the student unfamiliar with these earliest of Greek tragedies. Working in chronological order of their first production, this volume explores Persians, the earliest Greek tragedy that has come down to us; Seven against Thebes; Suppliants; and the three plays of the Oresteia trilogy: Agamemnon, Libation Bearers and Eumenides. The book also contains an essay on Prometheus Bound, now generally thought not to be by Aeschylus, but accepted as his in antiquity. The Plays of Euripides James Morwood, University of Oxford, UK Over the past decades there has been something of a revolution in the way we view classical drama generally and Euripides in particular. This book, updated in a second edition, reflects that revolution and aims to show how Euripides was continually reinventing himself in each of his 19 plays. Between general introduction and final summary, Morwood's chapters identify the themes that underlie the plays and concentrate, above all, on demonstrating the extraordinary diversity of this great dramatist. New to this edition, which is updated throughout, are further details on the individual plays and extra suggestions for background reading. Ovid A Poet on the Margins Laurel Fulkerson, Florida State University, USA This is a handy introduction to Ovid, who was famously exiled by the Emperor Augustus to the shores of the Black Sea for his self-confessed crimes of 'a poem and a mistake'. Laurel Fulkerson discusses his poetry's themes, particularly exile, marginality and alterity, as well as his innovation and audacious experiments with genre, metre and poetic form. The poetic analysis is presented against a backdrop of biographical information and the historical context of the newly Augustan Rome. Perfect for readers and students with little or no experience of Ovid, this will also be a welcome guide to more advanced scholars. Neglected Authors Matthew Wright, University of Exeter, UK Numerous books have been written about Greek tragedy, but almost all are concerned with the 32 plays that still survive. This book, by contrast, concentrates on the plays that no longer exist. Hundreds of tragedies were performed in Athens and further afield during the classical period, and even though nearly all are lost, a certain amount is known about them through fragments and other types of evidence. Matthew Wright offers an authoritative twovolume critical introduction and guide to these lost tragedies. This first volume examines the remains of works by playwrights such as Phrynichus, Agathon, Neophron, Critias, Astydamas, Chaeremon, and many others who have been forgotten or neglected. (Volume 2 explores the lost works of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides.) Greek Homosexuality Reissued with new forewords by Stephen Halliwell, Mark Masterson and James Robson K. J. Dover, University of St Andrews, UK "A landmark study. One cannot underestimate the importance of Mr. Dover's book." New York Times Book Review Hailed as a magisterial study when it first appeared, Greek Homosexuality remains an academic milestone and continues to be of major importance for students and scholars of gender studies, particularly within Classics. Long out of print in the UK, this new release of the second edition, in which the author wrote an epilogue reflecting on the impact of his book, has two specially commissioned forewords assessing Dover's legacy and the place of this volume within modern studies of gender in the ancient world. Sophocles: Antigone Douglas Cairns, University of Edinburgh, UK Antigone is Sophocles’ masterpiece, a seminal influence on a wide range of theatrical, literary and intellectual traditions all over the world. This volume sets the play in the contexts of its ancient mythical background, its original circumstances of performance, its relation to the culture and thought of contemporary Athens, and the rich and complicated history of its reception. Cairns considers the extent of the original audience’s acquaintance with earlier versions of the legends; the structure of the plot as it unfolds; the presentation of the characters and their motivations; the major political, social and ethical themes; and the resonance of those themes in the play's reception.

The Mimiambs of Herodas Translated into an English ‘Choliambic’ Metre with Literary-Historical Introductions and Notes Anna Rist, independent scholar, UK This volume provides an accessible introduction to Herodas and his mimiambs that requires no knowledge of Greek. The translation steers between literal accuracy and fidelity to this linguistically demanding poet’s spirit and intention. The contextual introductions and notes on the poems take into account recent scholarship, providing explanation of the context of the mimiambs and guiding the reader to an appreciation of the poetry itself. The General Introduction places the poet in his wider Hellenistic context: urban society in the Ptolemaic Empire, which he conjures up in his mimiambs, sometimes with scathing vividness. Experiencing Hektor Character in the Iliad Lynn Kozak, McGill University, USA The first major work to explore how the different aspects of Hektor's character accumulate over the course of the narrative to create the devastating effect of his death. This book documents the experience of Hektor through the Iliad’s serial narrative. Drawing on diverse tools from narratology to cognitive science, but with a special focus on film character, television poetics and performance practice, it examines how the mechanics of serial narrative construct his character, and challenges and destabilises popular and scholarly assumptions about both ancient epic and the Iliad’s ‘other’ hero. Her translations of the fragments and testimonia, and her summaries of critical trends promise to make this period of ancient drama accessible to a wider audience." Bryn Mawr Classical Review This volume offers a comprehensive picture of tragedy and the satyr play from the fourth century BCE. Canidia, Rome’s First Witch

Triumphs in the Age of Civil War

Maxwell Teitel Paule, Earlham College, USA

The Late Republic and the Adaptability of Triumphal Tradition

Canidia is one of the most well-attested witches in Latin literature. She appears in no fewer than six of Horace’s poems and in three she has a prominent role. This volume is the first comprehensive treatment of Canidia to date. It offers translations of each of the three poems which feature Canidia as a main character as well as the relevant portions from the other three poems in which Canidia plays a minor role. These translations are accompanied by extensive analysis of Canidia’s part in each piece that takes into account not only the poems’ literary contexts but their magico-religious details. The Moving City Processions, Passages and Promenades in Ancient Rome Edited by Ida Östenberg, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, Simon Malmberg, University of Bergen, Norway & Jonas Bjørnebye, independent scholar, Norway "An enjoyable read, successfully presenting a picture ‘of a bustling, lively society, where cityscape and movements are closely interactive and entwined’." Classics For All Reviews This groundbreaking collection focuses on movements in the ancient city of Rome, exploring interactions between people and monuments. Its original approach departs from the traditional study of single monuments into broader analyses of context and space, revealing both how movement adds to our understanding of societal interaction, and how the movement of people and materials shaped urban development. Carsten Hjort Lange, Aalborg University, Denmark This volume is the first study to consider the Roman triumph during the age of civil war, and argues that the idea of civil war as "normal" reflects the way it permeated the politics and society of the Late Roman Republic. Rethinking the nature and the character of the phenomenon during this period, the book focuses on what was a key feature of the Roman socio-political order: the triumph. It argues that a commander could in practice expect to triumph after a civil war victory if it could also be represented as being over a foreign enemy, even if the principal opponent was clearly Roman. The Last of the Romans Bonifatius - Warlord and comes Africae Jeroen W. P. Wijnendaele, University College Cork, Ireland The Last of the Romans presents a new political and military biography of Bonifatius, analysing his rise through the higher echelons of imperial power and examining themes such as the role of the buccellarii as contemporary semi-private armies. The volume offers a reassessment of the usurpation of Ioannes and Bonifatius’ indispensable role in the restoration of the Theodosian dynasty in the West. The Vandal invasion of North Africa is reexamined together with Bonifatius's putative role as the traitor who invited them in. Martial XIV: The Apophoreta Martial XIII: The Xenia Edited by T. J. Leary, formerly of Hampton School, UK

4

Edited by T. J. Leary, formerly of Hampton School, UK "Leary has set himself a heroic task, and ... has rendered a very signal service to us all ... this book is a fund of learning." Journal of Roman Archaeology

Although both innovative and engaging, Book XIII of Martial's epigrams, the Xenia, has generally been neglected. As its name suggests, it is concerned with presents, in particular those given at the Saturnalia by hosts to their dinner guests. Like the Apophoreta, which Martial published next, it comprises independent poetic couplets cast as descriptive gift-tags. This edition contains commentary devoted exclusively to the Xenia. Combining literary and textual analysis with close attention to social and cultural contexts, it will be valuable not only to specialists in Latin literature but also to anyone interested in the food and festivals of Ancient Rome.

Book XIV of Martial's epigrams, the Apophoreta is a unique source of information about one of the principal Roman festivals and about many of the everyday objects of first-century Roman life, yet until now it has attracted scant attention. This edition, while dealing comprehensively with matters of literary, linguistic and textual note, concerns itself also with the social context of the Apophoreta and the gifts it describes. It is a rich source of information not only for specialists in Latin epigram and Flavian literature, but also for historians, archaeologists and anyone with an interest in Roman life and customs.

Women's Life in Greece and Rome

The Caged Bird and Other Art Forms

A Source Book in Translation

Frederick Jones, University of Liverpool, UK

Maureen B. Fant, independent scholar, Italy & Mary R. Lefkowitz, Wellesley College, USA

Focusing on the Roman world of the late Republic, this book explores what art was and what it meant for the ancient Romans, examining the boundaries between art objects and material culture and the ways in which these forms worked on their viewers, users and society. Four case studies of cultural and aesthetic manifestations, some traditionally seen as art and some less so, are each related to their social contexts, and to broader sociological, anthropological, and cognitive fields. This study defines and explores both the internal variety and the consistencies of 'art', and the basic unity of related 'not-art' in their cultural and aesthetic content and their social functions. The Hunchback in Hellenistic and Roman Art Lisa Trentin, Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada Although the theme of the 'Other', and particularly the deformed and disabled 'Other', has experienced a surge in scholarship in recent years, the figure of the hunchback has remained relatively unexplored territory. Here it is given the attention hitherto denied and this book provides a much-needed way of re-thinking and re-reading images of the 'Other' as well as exploring key issues that lie at the very heart of ancient representation. The author takes an art-historical approach, examining three key iconographic features of the corpus of hunchbacks as well as representations of the deformed and disabled in general. Deep Classics Rethinking Classical Reception Edited by Shane Butler, Johns Hopkins University, USA Fragmented, buried, and largely lost, the classical past presents formidable obstacles to anyone who would seek to know it. 'Deep Classics' is the study of these obstacles and, in particular, of the way in which the contemplation of the classical past resembles – and has even provided a model for – other kinds of human endeavor. This volume offers a new way to understand the modalities and aims of Classics itself, through the ages. Its individual chapters draw fruitful connections between the reception of classical and current concerns in philosophy of mind, cognitive theory, epistemology, media studies, sense studies, aesthetics, queer theory and eco-criticism. The Religious Worlds of the Laity in Late Antique Gaul Lisa Kaaren Bailey, University of Auckland, New Zealand Christianity in the late antique world was not imposed but embraced, and the laity were not passive members of their religion but had a central role in its creation. This is the first volume to explore the role of the laity in the key region of Gaul, through history, archaeology and theology. The acts and experiences of clergy and laity are compared: the former themselves constructed the category of 'the laity', and shaped lay religious experience by this need to create categories; the laity experienced and interpreted their religion differently according to gender, location, piety and social status, and their decisions shaped the nature of the Church and of their faith. Ancient Greek Myth in World Fiction since 1989

The Gentle, Jealous God

Edited by Justine McConnell, University of Oxford, UK & Edith Hall, King's College London, UK

Simon Perris, University of Wellington, New Zealand

This volume examines the varied ways that writers from around the world have turned to classical antiquity to articulate their contemporary concerns. US television series The Wire, contemporary Arab fiction, the Japanese novels of Haruki Murakami and the works of New Zealand’s foremost Maori writer, Witi Ihimaera, are among the subjects treated by this international group of scholars. Reading Euripides' Bacchae in English

Twentieth-century poets and playwrights have often turned their hand to Bacchae, leaving the play with an especially rich and varied translation history. The Gentle, Jealous God introduces the play and surveys its wider reception; examines a selection of English translations from the early 20th century to the early 21st, setting them in their social, intellectual, and cultural context; and argues, finally, that Dionysus and Bacchae remain potent cultural symbols even now. War as Spectacle The Codex Fori Mussolini A Latin Text of Italian Fascism Han Lamers, Humboldt Universität, Germany & Bettina Reitz-Joosse, Groningen University, The Netherlands This book is the first study of a Latin text written for and about Benito Mussolini and buried under a white marble obelisk set up in the Foro Italico during the Fascist era. Composed in the early 1930s yet in the language of the Roman emperors, the Codex was supposed to reach audiences in the distant future. An introduction, clear translation and commentary (offering help with historical background as well as specific references and questions of phrasing) render this forgotten text accessible to students and scholars – and throw light on the ideological role of the Latin language in Fascist Italy. Ancient Magic and the Supernatural in the Modern Visual and Performing Arts Edited by Filippo Carlà-Uhink, University of Exeter, UK & Irene Berti, Karls Universität, Germany Looking across the millennia, from Christian distrust of ancient magic and cults to the revival and adaptation of ancient myths and religion in the arts centuries later, this book offers an original analysis of the reception of ancient magic and the supernatural, across a wide variety of different media – from comics to film, from painting to opera. Scholars from many fields and countries aim to deconstruct certain scholarly traditions by proposing original interdisciplinary approaches and collaborations, showing how the visual and performing arts of different periods interlink and shape cultural and social identities. Ancient and Modern Perspectives on the Display of Armed Conflict Edited by Anastasia Bakogianni, Massey University, New Zealand & Valerie M. Hope, Open University, UK "Fascinating ... The collection as a whole is excellent. Individually, the chapters are expertly written and well presented." Bryn Mawr Classical Review War as Spectacle examines the display of armed conflict in classical antiquity and its impact in the modern world. The contributors address key questions such as how and why war was conceptualised as a spectacle in sources, and how this view of war has been adapted in post-classical contexts and why. Essays engage with the motif of war as spectacle through a variety of methodological and theoretical frameworks, from literature and art in antiquity to today. Olympiodorus: On Plato First Alcibiades 10–28

Priscian: Answers to King Khosroes of Persia

Translated by Michael Griffin, University of British Columbia, Canada

Translated by Pamela Huby, University of Liverpool, UK, Sten Ebbesen, Saxo Institute, Denmark, David Langslow, University of Manchester, UK, Donald Russell, Carlos Steel & Malcolm Wilson, University of Oregon, USA

Olympiodorus, possibly the last non-Christian teacher of philosophy in Alexandria, delivered 28 lectures as an introduction to Plato. For us, these lectures can serve as an accessible introduction to late Neoplatonism. Lectures 10–28 are here translated into English with an introduction and comprehensive commentary notes. The first nine lectures with a biography appear in Olympiodorus: Life of Plato and On Plato First Alcibiades 1–9 (Bloomsbury, 2014).

Priscian recorded philosophical conversations of exiled Athenians with the king of Persia. The work survives only in an often-obscure Latin version. This English translation is accompanied by an introduction and comprehensive commentary notes that clarify and discuss the meaning and implications of the original philosophy.

An Inquiry into the Philosophical Concept of Scholê

Aesthetic Themes in Pagan and Christian Neoplatonism

Leisure as a Political End

From Plotinus to Gregory of Nyssa

Kostas Kalimtzis, Arcadia University, Greece

Daniele Iozzia, University of Catania, Italy

Though the ancient Greek philosophical concept of scholê is usually translated as ‘leisure’, there is a vast difference between the two terms. This book argues that Aristotle's proposition that musical play was the quintessential activity of a leisured citizenry in a just republic, is key to our understanding the concepts of leisure that we have inherited from the intellectuals of the Hellenistic and Roman empires and the early Church Fathers. Cleopatra's Needles The Lost Obelisks of Egypt

This book reconstructs the aesthetic philosophical views of Late Antiquity, and their relation to artistic production of the time. By examining the resonance of Plotinus’ thought with contemporary artists and with Christian thinkers, including Gregory of Nyssa, the book demonstrates the importance of Plotinus’ treatise On Beauty for the development of late ancient aesthetics. The Cappadocian fathers’ interest in Plotinus is explored, as well as the consequent legacy of the pagan thinker’s philosophy within Christian thought, such as the concept of beauty and the narration of the contemplative experience. Bob Brier, Long Island University, USA "Mr. Brier tells these stories with panache and with authority. His cast of characters-pharaohs, emperors, popes, engineers, Egyptologists and millionaires-can hardly be beat." Wall Street Journal In the half-century between 1831 and 1881 three massive obelisks left Egypt, bound for Paris, London and New York. With no records of how obelisks had been moved in the past, the engineers entrusted with transporting them across oceans had to invent new methods, and they were far from certain that they would work. The world held its breath. Bob Brier recreates a turbulent era, caught up in obelisk mania, with astounding tales of engineering dexterity and naval endurance that will fascinate all those interested in Egypt, its iconic monuments and the history of great endeavour. Foreigners in Ancient Egypt Theban Tomb Paintings from the Early Eighteenth Dynasty Flora Brooke Anthony, Georgia State University, USA This volume analyses the way early 18th dynasty tombs made a new presentation of foreigners. Previously depicted as symbols of chaos, now they are shown in an orderly fashion, carrying tribute that underscores the wealth and prestige of the tomb owner. This orderliness reflects the ability of the Egyptian state to impose order on foreign lands, but also crucially symbolises the tomb owner’s ability to overcome the chaos of death and achieve a successful afterlife. This important and original study is illustrated with colour plates that show the paintings in all their glory, as well as black-and-white images. The Egyptian Oracle Project Ancient Ceremony in Augmented Reality Edited by Robyn Gillam, York University, Canada & Jeffrey Jacobson, PublicVR, Boston, USA For more than 2,000 years, the Egyptian processional oracle was one of the main points of contact between temple-based religion and the general population: in a public ceremony, a god would indicate its will or answer questions through the movements of a portable cult statue. The Egyptian Oracle Project reenacts the oracle using virtual reality and live performance and this book's collection of essays provides vital background to the path-breaking project, introducing educational theatre and virtual reality, describing the ancient ceremony and its development, and exploring the virtual temple setting and the wider implications of this project for virtual heritage. Evidential Reasoning in Archaeology

Butrint and the Global Heritage Industry

Robert Chapman, University of Reading, UK & Alison Wylie, Durham University, UK

Richard Hodges, The American University of Rome, Italy Butrint has been one of the largest archaeological projects in the Mediterranean over the last two decades. Major excavations and a multi-volume series of accompanying scientific publications have made this a key site for our developing understanding of the Roman and Medieval Mediterranean. Through this set of interwoven reflections about the archaeology and cultural heritage history of his twenty-year odyssey in south-west Albania, Richard Hodges considers how the Butrint Foundation, which he established, has aimed to protect and enhance Butrint’s spirit of place for future generations. How do archaeologists actually work with the forms of data they identify as a record of the cultural past? How are these data collected and construed as evidence? What is the impact on archaeological practice of new techniques of data recovery and analysis? To answer these questions, the authors identify key examples of evidential reasoning in archaeology that are widely regarded as successful, as pivotal to the development of the field, or as instructive failures, and build nuanced analyses of the forms of reasoning they exemplify.

The Dragoman Solomon Negima and his Clients (1885–1933) Rachel Mairs, University of Reading, UK In 2014, Rachel Mairs made the remarkable discovery of the ‘Testimonial Book of Dragoman Solomon N. Negima’. Using the reference letters pasted inside recommending Negima's services as guide and interpreter, and the first-hand published and unpublished accounts of the travellers themselves, this volume tells the stories of 19th-century tourists such as an intrepid Victorian female traveller, and an African-American minister who had been born into slavery. Between the lines of others’ letters, Negima’s remarkable story also emerges, allowing us an insight into the lives of individuals whose histories would otherwise be lost to us, and a new perspective on the history of travel in the Middle East. Building Colonialism Roman Reflections Iron Age to Viking Age in Northern Europe Klavs Randsborg, University of Copenhagen, Denmark Roman Reflections uses a series of case studies to explore how Roman society connected with and influenced Northern Europe during the Iron and Viking Ages. The book brings late prehistoric Denmark – best known for its so-called ‘bog bodies’ – into a world dominated by textual histories, principally that of Tacitus. Throughout, traditional sources and history are presented in conjunction with new archaeological observations and interpretations. Archaeology and Urban Space in East Africa Daniel T. Rhodes, Area Archaeologist at the National Trust for Scotland, UK Building Colonialism draws together the relationship between archaeology and history in East Africa using techniques of artefact, building, spatial and historical analyses to highlight the existence of, and accordingly the need to conserve, the urban centres of Africa's more recent past. By exploring the physical remains of European activity and the way that the construction of harbour towns directly reflects the colonial mission of European powers in the 19th century, Rhodes looks at the social and spatial implications of these towns, with their centres of derelict and unused buildings. He discusses contemporary approaches to the conservation of colonial built heritage, and highlights the difficulties faced in ensuring valid participatory protection of the urban heritage resource. The Last Royal Rebel

A New History of the '45 Rebellion

The Life and Death of James, Duke of Monmouth

Jacqueline Riding The 1745 Jacobite Rebellion was a turning point in British history. At its height it threatened to completely destabilize the British state, while disrupting her military capability in Europe and colonial activities in America and beyond. Yet the reality of this crucial episode continues to be obscured by fiction and myth: the heroic but doomed ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’, versus the heartless ‘Butcher’ Cumberland. This magnificent, wide-ranging account draws extensively on contemporary sources, revealing the thoughts of key players and eyewitnesses as these remarkable events played out. It presents a story more complex, paradoxical and even tragic than the myth suggests. Christmas and the British: A Modern History Martin Johnes, Swansea University, UK The modern Christmas was made by the Victorians and rooted in their belief in commerce, family and religion. Their rituals and traditions persist to the present day, but the festival has been changed by growing affluence, shifting family structures, greater expectations of happiness and material comfort, technological developments and falling religious belief. Martin Johnes shows how Christmas and its traditions have been lived, adapted and thought about in Britain since 1914. Christmas and the British is about the festival's social, cultural and economic functions, and its often forgotten status as the most unusual and important day of the year. The Grass Roots of English History Local Societies in England before the Industrial Revolution David Hey, University of Sheffield, UK In medieval and early modern Britain, people would refer to their local district as their ‘country’. Core groups of families that remained rooted in these ‘countries’ shaped local culture and passed on their traditions. In The Grass Roots of English History, David Hey examines the differing nature of the various local societies that were found throughout England in these periods. With its broad coverage from the medieval period up to the Industrial Revolution, the book shows how England’s socio-economic landscape had changed over time, employing evidence provided by archaeology, architecture, botany, cultural studies, linguistics and historical demography. Drinking, Driving and Dancing, 1925-1955

This is the first book to examine the cultural phenomenon of the roadhouse in mid 20th-century Britain and its impact on British leisure. Roadhouses were an important component in the transformation of leisure in the 1930s and beyond, reflecting the increased levels of social and physical mobility brought about by new technologies, suburbanisation and the influence of American culture. Communal Violence in the British Empire

Hitler's Echo

Disturbing the Pax

Paul Jackson, University of Northampton, UK

Mark Doyle, Middle Tennessee State University, USA

"Fresh and utterly up-to-date scholarship which draws upon a truly impressive range of research materials…But just as impressive is the strength of Dr Jackson's accessible writing." Gregory Maertz, St. John's University, USA

"Thoroughly researched and engagingly written, this book draws together the local and imperial in impressive ways." Jill C. Bender, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, USA

Paul Jackson casts fresh light on one of post-war Britain’s most prominent fascists, using him as a lens to examine the contemporary history of the extreme right. The book explores the various neoNazi groups that Colin Jordan inspired, led and contributed to throughout his time as Britain's foremost promoter of Nazi ideology. Using numerous primary sources, it offers a new analysis of political extremism in post-war Britain.

Communal Violence in the British Empire focuses on how Britons interpreted, policed, and sometimes fostered violence between different ethnic and religious communities in the empire. Mark Doyle uses outbreaks of communal violence in Ireland, the West Indies, and South Asia to uncover the inner workings of British imperialism: its guiding assumptions, its mechanisms of control, its impact, and its limitations.

Ron Geaves, Cardiff University, UK This book charts the history of Muslim missionary activity in London from 1912 until 1944. During Britain’s last great economic crash, politicians and planners in Liverpool and Manchester responded by investing in dramatic and ambitious programmes of urban regeneration. This is the first book to provide the hitherto unknown story of the innovative transformation of these cities. It offers a complex interpretation of the ways cities develop, pointing to new methods and ways of understanding both interwar Britain and urban history more generally. At a time of debate and discussion about devolution and decentralisation of government, this book makes an opportune contribution to debates about urban governance and regionalism in contemporary Britain. Medical Negligence in Victorian Britain The Crisis of Care under the English Poor Law, c.1834-1900 Kim Price, Northumbria University, UK "This is an excellent, detailed account of what medical negligence under the New Poor Law of 1834 meant theoretically and practically in Victorian Britain… What emerges from this groundbreaking work is that the crusades launched in the later 19th century by official and non-official groups to reform the poor law system actually made conditions much worse for both doctors and patients. Summing Up: Essential." Rehabilitation and Probation in England and Wales, 1876-1962 Raymond Gard, Independent Scholar, Germany

The Policing of Belfast 1870-1914 Mark Radford, Oxford University, UK "This is a fascinating and very readable account of policing that was, and still is, very different from the rest of the UK." Police History Society

This study examines the arrival of a modern probation service. Focusing on the first half of the 20th century, it describes the debates, conflicts and compromises that resulted in the creation of a state-sponsored, centrally-controlled, professional and secular agency based on social work and psychology. Ray Gard explores the arrival of the so-called period of 'penal optimism', showing how rehabilitation arrived in the courts of England and Wales.

Offering an important insight into the social, political and military history of Ireland, this book examines the Royal Irish Constabulary in lateVictorian Belfast. It looks at the contrast in styles between urban and rural policing, and how the largely rural constabulary adapted to the challenges of urban policing.

The Bitter Taste of Victory Life, Love and Art in the Ruins of the Reich Lara Feigel After the end of WWII, the Allies began to not only rebuild Germany, but also to indoctrinate the German people in the ideas of peace and civilization, using the arts as crucial guides to alternative, less militaristic ways of life. In an extraordinary extension of diplomacy, many writers, artists, actors, and filmmakers were dispatched by Britain and America to help rebuild the country their governments had spent years bombing. This book shows how many of them became disillusioned by the contrast between the destruction they were witnessing and the cool politics of reconstruction. Robert Goodwin In the sixteenth century, Spain was the first nation in history to have worldwide reach. Goodwin tells the story of Spain and the Spaniards, from great soldiers like the Duke of Alba to literary figures and artists such as El Greco, Velázquez, Cervantes, and Lope de Vega, and the monarchs who ruled over them. At the beginning of the modern age, Spaniards were caught between the excitement of change and a medieval world of chivalry and religious orthodoxy, they experienced a turbulent existential angst that fueled an exceptional Golden Age, a fluorescence of art, literature and poetry. Out of the Shadows Portugal from Revolution to the Present Day Neill Lochery Out of the Shadows captures in vivid detail the emergence of democratic Portugal, beginning with the Carnation Revolution in April 1974 and using previously unseen material from documentary sources and files from the National Archive in Kew. In a departure from the numerous accounts depicting Portugal as a golden imperial power, now lackluster, or as the modern day ‘poor man of Europe’, Lochery argues that Portugal’s best days are far from behind her. Instead, this is a nation emerging from the ashes of the financial crisis, one of increasing relevance on the world stage, and with much to offer. Interrogating Francoism History and Dictatorship in TwentiethCentury Spain Edited by Helen Graham, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK "A fine, authoritative collection of essays." Donald Bloxham, University of Edinburgh, UK Interrogating Francoism uses an effective three-part structure to look at the old regime and the makings of Francoism, the nature of Francoism itself and the ‘history wars’ that have taken place over the dictator’s legacy. Social, political, economic and cultural historical approaches are integrated throughout the text and ‘top down’ political analysis is incorporated along with ‘bottom up’ social perspectives. Angelica's Book and the World of Reading in Late Renaissance Italy

Vagrancy in English Culture and Society, 1650-1750

Brendan Dooley, University College Cork, Ireland

David Hitchcock, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK

In a Florentine antique shop, Brendan Dooley discovered a damaged copy of Straparola’s 16thcentury work, Piacevoli Notti, inscribed with text by its apparent owner, Angelica Baldachini. This book scrutinizes Angelica’s inscription from the standpoints of calligraphy, orthography, linguistics, dialectology and the socio-psychology of writing; it also examines the copy of Piacevoli Notti, its author and the book’s place in literature. In doing so it tells us much about Renaissance publishing, censorship and women's involvement with reading, books and knowledge. Frank Dikötter

Michael Meyer’s In Manchuria brings rural China to life a scintillating combination of memoir, contemporary reporting, and historical research, presenting a unique profile of China’s legendary northeast territory. For three years, Meyer rented a home in the rice-farming community of Wasteland, hometown to his wife’s family, and their personal saga mirrors the tremendous change most of rural China is undergoing, in the form of a privately held rice company that has built new roads, introduced organic farming, and constructed high-rise apartments into which farmers can move in exchange for their land rights. Once a commune, Wasteland is now a company town, a phenomenon happening across China that Meyer documents for the first time. A People's History, 1962—1976 In 1966 an ageing Mao launched an ambitious scheme to consolidate his legacy, unleashing Red Guards against all remnants of old culture. Soon rival factions were fighting each other in the streets with semiautomatic weapons in the name of revolutionary purity. The military intervened, turning the country into a garrison state marked by bloody purges that crushed as many as one in fifty people. But after the army itself fell victim to the Cultural Revolution, ordinary villagers saw an opportunity to undermine the planned economy and resurrect the market. As fresh evidence from the archives shows, they quietly buried Maoism. Darjeeling A History of the World’s Greatest Tea Jeff Koehler In the heart of the Eastern Himalayas, bound by Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim, rows of brilliant-green, waist-high tea bushes cover the steep slopes and valleys around Darjeeling. They produce a fraction of the world’s tea, and less than 1 per cent of India’s total. Yet that limited crop is the world’s best. This is the story, rich in mythology, ecology and culture, of the industry’s rise under British Imperial rule, recent decline, and current struggle to produce. As this Edenic region seethes with unrest in a violent fight for independence and against climate change some measures to protect this unduplicatable tea are nothing short of radical. Brian Fagan From the first wolf to find companionship in our prehistoric ancestors' camp, to the beasts who bore the weight of our early empires, to the whole spectrum of brutally exploited or absurdly pampered pets of our industrial age, animals have left an indelible mark on the history of our species and continue to shape its future. Women’s Activism and 'Second Wave' Feminism

Capitalism

Transnational Histories

The Reemergence of a Historical Concept

Edited by Barbara Molony, Santa Clara University, USA & Jennifer Nelson, University of Redlands, USA

Edited by Jürgen Kocka, Berlin Social Science Center, Germany & Marcel van der Linden, International Institute for Social History, Netherlands

It is no longer possible to imagine that feminism has ever fostered an unproblematic sisterhood among women blind to race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, nationality, and citizenship status. The chapters in this collection modify the ‘wave’ metaphor in some cases and in others re-periodize it. By studying individual movements, leading international scholars address several themes that advance our understandings of the history of feminism. By analyzing practical activism, they produce new ways of theorizing feminism and new historical perspectives about the activist locations from which feminist politics emerged. Hirohito's War

Language, Rhetoric and the Traditions of Hatred

The Pacific War, 1941-1945

Beth A. Griech-Polelle, Pacific Lutheran University, USA

"Magnificent … Hirohito’s War by Francis Pike sets a new standard: oceanic in scope, comprehensive in detail, subtle in dissection, magisterial in organisation and consistently readable." The Spectator

This book examines varieties of anti-Semitism that have existed throughout history, from religious anti-Semitism in the ancient Roman Empire to the racial anti-Semitism in Germany and Austria in the late 19th century. Griech-Polelle analyzes the tropes, imagery, legends, myths and stereotypes about Jews that have surfaced at these various points in time. She considers how this language helped to engender an innate distrust, dislike and even hatred of the Jews in 20th-century Europe and the part this language played in the Holocaust. This is a vital book for any student of the Holocaust keen to know more about the language of hate which fuelled it. A Higher Form of Killing Six Weeks in the First World War That Forever Changed the Nature of Warfare Diana Preston In 1915, Western civilization was shocked. World War I was already appalling in its brutality, but until then it had been fought on the battlefield, following rules long agreed upon by international convention. Suddenly, between April 22 and May 31, those rules were abandoned. On April 22 German canisters spewed poison gas over French and Canadian solider at Ypres; on May 7 a German submarine torpedoed the Lusitania; and on May 31 a German zeppelin began the first aerial bombardment of London. In A Higher Form of Killing, celebrated historian Diana Preston links these events for the first time, vividly chronicling the birth of weapons of mass destruction. Many soldiers were illiterate and travelled from remote villages to fight in the muddy trenches. For King and Another Country tells, for the first time, the personal stories of some of these Indians who went to the Western Front: from a grand turbaned Maharaja to a lowly sweeper who dies in a hospital in England. A Guest at the Shooters' Banquet My Grandfather's SS Past, My Jewish Family, A Search for the Truth Rita Gabis Rita Gabis comes from a family of Eastern European Jews and Lithuanian Catholics. As a child, she knew one version of her Catholic grandfather’s history: before emigrating from Lithuania, he had fought the Russians, whose brutal occupation destroyed thousands of lives prior to the invasion of Hitler's army. Decades later, she discovered he had been the chief of security police under the Gestapo in the Lithuanian town of Švencionys, near the killing field of Poligon, where eight thousand Jews were murdered over three days in the fall of 1941. A history and family memoir like no other, Gabis recounts her remarkable quest to learn all she can about the man she thought she knew. The Victims of Slavery, Colonization and the Holocaust A Comparative History of Persecution Kitty Millet, San Francisco State University, USA This book investigates the experience of being exterminated, as felt by victims of the Holocaust, and compares this with the experiences of people who have been colonised or enslaved. Using numerous victim accounts and a range of primary sources, this book moves away from the 'continuity thesis', to look at the victim experience on its own terms. By affording each case study its own distinctive aspects, Kitty Millett allows for a more enriching comparison of victim experience to be made. It is an important volume for all students of the Holocaust, genocide and the history of mass political violence. War, Culture and Society Series Editor: Stephen McVeigh, Swansea University, UK This is a multi- and interdisciplinary series which encourages the parallel and complementary military, historical, and socio-cultural investigation of 20th- and 21st-century war and conflict.

Women, Warfare and Representation American Servicewomen in the Twentieth Century Emerald M. Archer, Woodbury University, USA

David J. Anderson, Swansea University, UK

This book considers the various ways the American servicewoman has been represented throughout the 20th century and how those representations impact her role. The primary focus is on the American case, but Archer also shows how women's integration in the military differs in other countries, including Great Britain and Israel. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the book draws on military history, theory and social psychology to offer an integrated history of women in the military and their representation in society.

This book examines the ways in which white and black southerners used historical material to define and understand themselves. Starting with the Confederacy's defeat in 1865, it builds on the idea that memories are produced out of experience before reshaping it. Using diaries, letters, reminiscences, magazines, fiction and film, this study illustrates how the creation of the Lost Cause was at once political and emotional, not only reflecting the political, economic and racial interests it served, but also reflecting the genuine desire to compensate for what had been loved and lost.

Second World War British Military Camouflage Designing Deception Isla Forsyth, University of Nottingham, UK This study examines the history of camouflage, through the scientific biography of Dr Hugh Cott and other camouflage practitioners, to offer an original approach to the cultures and geographies of military conflict. It shows how camouflage transformed battlefields into unsettling theaters of war, and the lasting consequences this meant for both military technology and the ethics of battle. Filming the End of the Holocaust Allied Documentaries, Nuremberg and the Liberation of the Concentration Camps John J. Michalczyk, Boston College, USA "Solemn and intense...Recommended." CHOICE This book considers how the US Government commissioned the US Signal Corps and other filmmakers to document the horrors of the concentration camps during the April-May 1945 liberation. The Holocaust as Paradigm?

African Soldiers in Europe, 1914-1922

Rebecca Jinks, University of Exeter, UK

Dick van Galen Last & Ralf Futselaar, both of NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Netherlands

Representing Genocide explores the diverse ways in which Holocaust representations have influenced and structured how other genocides are understood in the West. Rebecca Jinks focuses on the canonical 20th-century cases: Armenia, Cambodia, Bosnia, and Rwanda. The book pursues five thematic areas: how genocides are recognised as such; the representation of the origins and perpetrators of genocide; how witnesses represent genocide; representations of the aftermath of genocide; and western responses to genocide. The Philosophy of Knowledge: A History Four-Volume Set Edited by Stephen Hetherington, University of New South Wales, Australia The first in-depth survey of the history of knowledge in Western philosophy. The Philosophy of Knowledge: A History presents the history of one of Western philosophy’s greatest challenges: understanding the nature of knowledge. Divided chronologically into four volumes, it follows conceptions of knowledge that have been proposed, defended, replaced, and proposed anew by ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary philosophers. Each volume centers around three key questions: what conceptions of knowledge have been offered? Which have shaped epistemology in particular and philosophy in general? How is knowledge conceived by philosophers now? Overseen by an international team of leading philosophers and featuring 50 speciallycommissioned chapters, this is a major collection on one of philosophy’s defining topics. Two-Volume Set Edited by Mark G. Spencer, Brock University, Canada The first reference work on this key subject in early American history. With over 500 original essays, The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of the American Enlightenment provides a comprehensive account to complement the intense scholarly activity that has recently centered on the European Enlightenment. With substantial and original essays on the major American Enlightenment figures, including Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, David Rittenhouse, Benjamin Rush, Jonathan Edwards and many others, this wide-ranging collection also includes topical essays and entries on dozens of often-overlooked secondary figures. It has long been known that Americans made their own contributions to the Enlightenment, most notably by putting Enlightenment ideas to work in defining the American Revolution, the United States Constitution, and the nature of the early American Republic. These volumes show that the American Enlightenment was more far reaching than even that story assumes. Presenting a fresh definition of the Enlightenment in America, this remarkable work confirms that the American Enlightenment constitutes the central framework for understanding the development of American history between the 18th and 19th centuries. History and Politics in the 20th Century: Europe in the 20th Century - Bloomsbury Academic Collections Ten-Volume Set This collection of ten facsimile titles, chosen from our imprints Pinter, Mansell and Continuum, covers a broad variety of themes that confronted Europe throughout the turbulent 20th century, focusing on European politics abroad as much as on inter-European political changes and challenges. The titles in this set examine the development of Britain from Empire to Commonwealth, paying particular attention to the inter- and post-war years, the emergence of the European Union and the struggles faced by former Soviet states in the 1990s. They also pick up on two of the leitmotifs of the 20th century: the quest for sovereignty and the rise and fall (and rise) of extreme right ideas and politics.
