150th Anniversary Gala in December of 2018. I feel very fortunate to be serving as president at this significant time in the College’s history.

Since our last issue of On The Green, we’ve hosted a number of 150th divisional events where we celebrated long-time faculty, alumni, and friends; the College’s nursing and creative arts programs have topped academic ranking lists; and we’ve ushered in over 300 new alumni. It was wonderful to

have honorary degree recipients Governor Murphy, Christian McBride, and Prof. Oh share words of wisdom with our graduates. Looking toward the fall, I can promise you we have so much more to celebrate.

For those who have a lifetime relationship with Bloomfield College, the College’s evolution from a small, German Presbyterian Institution to a nationally recognized, highly diverse liberal arts college is striking. We have now been recognized in a new report by the American Council on Education, one of the most respected national centers on America’s educational institutions, as one of only five predominantly black institutions with a “high extended mobility rate”. That is, from the lowest two quintiles of wealth to the top two quintiles. The other four were the University of West Alabama and three of the colleges in the CUNY system (City University of New York).

I do not want you to miss an opportunity to connect with the College during this historic year.

C apping off a year of 150th anniversary celebrations, on Friday, May 18, 2018, Bloomfield College embraced 320 new alumni at the College’s 145th Commencement Ceremonies.

The institution conferred recognition upon its distinguished retiring faculty during the program, with Dr. Glen Hayes and Dr. Glenda Kirkland receiving Faculty Emeritus/a honors.

College President, Richard A. Levao, gave special mention to the Alumni Marshal, Reverend Ernie Kosa, from the class of 1945. Rev. Kosa was a chaplain in the United States Army and received the Bronze Star by order of the President of the United States.

Honorary degree recipients included New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy; Christian McBride, Grammy-winning jazz bassist; and Prof. Deog-Seong Oh, President of Chungnam National University.

“Looking at the crowd today, I see the promise of New Jersey, I see the pride of New Jersey, I see the great diversity of New Jersey. And most importantly, I see the future of New Jersey,” said Governor Murphy, in his remarks, elevating his voice over the applause. “Help us ensure that the New Jersey you hand off to your children is better, more equal, and more tolerant than the one you have inherited…It will be your jobs to see the next great wave of societal change through. I know you are up to the task. Your generation has already shown that it is ready to lead. Your generation is not letting anyone tell you to sit down and wait your turn. You will become this nation’s leaders. I, for one, am really excited to see your generation do so.”

“Every last one of you here today are all jazz musicians.

Everyone sitting out there is Duke Ellington, Mary Lou Williams, Miles Davis, or John Coltrane,” said

Christian McBride. “When you go through life, and hear people speak, that’s a note. The rhythm of everyday life is a drum pattern. When you are around friends or strangers, that’s your harmonic foundation. In life, you create these wonderful notes and songs, based on rhythm, melody, and harmony.”

“My father encouraged me to dedicate my life to helping others. I try to reach students through actions, rather than words, as an educator. I believe it is more important to live for others, than to live for oneself. It is a lesson I try to instill in my three daughters and my students. Living for others is something I hope you all consider as you graduate today and take with you on the next chapter of your lives,” said Prof. Oh. Bloomfield Mayor, Michael Venezia, attended the ceremony.

The day also featured remarks from other notable speakers, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, John Delucca ’66; President of the Alumni Association, John Murdock ’73; and Class of 2018 Valedictorian Nadira Fant, a Creative Arts & Technology student.

“As we all set goals and make plans for the things we want to accomplish, just remember that sometimes life doesn’t always go as planned,” said Fant, speaking directly to fellow graduates. “It’s okay to stumble or even fall, but you can’t let it slow your momentum. Whatever life brings, don’t lose focus on what you set out to accomplish. Instead, learn to adapt to change and rise up to any challenge you may face because you just may surprise yourself, I know I did.”

Following Commencement, in a sea of decorated caps, maroon diplomas, balloons, flowers, and smiles, both graduates and guests continued the celebration on a very crowded Liberty Street.

CAMPUSNEWSROOM Partnerships Announced Newark’s Pillar College

B

loomfield College and Pillar College, two of the founding members of the Newark City of Learning Collaborative (NCLC), have partnered on the matriculation process of Bloomfield College students seeking a master’s degree in counseling, with specializations in marriage, couple, and family counseling.

“This agreement marks an exciting day for Bloomfield College students,” said Richard A. Levao, President of Bloomfield College.

“Through this signed agreement, we’re making the process of transitioning to graduate school practically seamless, and, in the process, supporting our students’ desire to reach the pinnacle of their desired professions, ensuring a promising future ahead.”

The collaborative arrangement allows Bloomfield College students who have achieved a bachelor of arts with a major in one of the so-

cial or behavioral sciences to “fast-track” the admissions process with Pillar College.

“We are excited to establish our first partnership with Bloomfield College, offering its qualified students the ability to obtain an MA in Counseling in two years, as well as the potential to obtain their Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credentials,” said Pillar College President, Dr. David Schroeder. “We hope this is just the first of many collaborative arrangements between the two schools, which share not only geographic proximity, but a highly motivated student body that’s representative of New Jersey’s diverse population.”

This agreement between Newark’s Pillar College, a Christian-based institution of higher learning offering accredited degrees at the associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s levels, and

Bloomfield College, brings NCLC closer to reaching its goal of increasing the percentage of Newark residents who hold degrees, certificates, and other high quality credentials to 25% by the year 2025.

“Bloomfield College’s student body has much in common with Pillar’s demographic, especially our mission to support and nurture firstgeneration college students,” said Dr. Tracy M. Duncan, Chair of Pillar’s master in counseling program. “The signed agreement supports academic, professional, and personal development by removing many of the barriers that are typically part of the graduate admissions process.”

East Orange Housing Authority Bloomfield College is the first college to partner with the East Orange Housing Authority (EOHA) on an initiative to create clear pathways to college, EOHA-specific scholarships, internship opportunities, mentoring, and academic support for EOHA-assisted students at Bloomfield College.

“The East Orange Housing Authority is proud to partner with Bloomfield College to offer scholarships and resources to families in need. This initiative assists to minimize the financial barriers to higher education and creates a pathway for sustainability and success,” stated Elena D. Coley, EOHA Director of Operations.

The partnership offers a model for collaboration between Bloomfield College and EOHA to encourage college readiness and support the neighborhood and families.

“I am so impressed with the commitment to higher education shown by the Housing Authority of the City of East Orange,” said Adam Castro, Vice President for Enrollment Management. “I hope this partnership demonstrates how powerful these relationships between colleges and local organizations can be to provide access to life-changing educational experiences to the youth of our county and state.”

Together, the College and EOHA will create and nurture programs, projects, and activities that will address college access and persistence challenges for students under the purview of the EOHA. The partnership is based on a mutual desire to provide opportunities to achieve a higher education and life-changing experiences to qualified and motivated students; provide and promote college access and affordability; and strengthen the re-

lationship between Bloomfield College and EOHA. This partnership extends beyond collegebound students and to the employees of EOHA. Bloomfield College will offer current and active EOHA employees a 25% tuition reduction on fulltime undergraduate, part-time undergraduate, and graduate tuition rates. Applicants must meet Bloomfield College admission standards and be formally admitted to the institution to receive this benefit.

“As an educational institution, we must always revisit and evaluate how we partner and serve our neighboring communities to assure our collective success. EOHA is an exceptional organization with a great mission,” stated Dr. Patrick Lamy, Vice President for Student Affairs. “We hope

this partnership is one of many to follow to support our mission to provide some of the most diverse student populations in New Jersey with a superior and affordable educational experience.”

The EOHA partnership with Bloomfield College was initiated in honor of EOHA’s new community development campaign, “Building Homes, Changing Lives.” The campaign commemorates the EOHA providing 60 years of service to the community and the start of over $30 million dollars in redevelopment projects.

The first series of scholarships were awarded at the kickoff event of the campaign, the Diamond Jubilee Gala, on Thursday, March 29.

County College of Morris Bloomfield College and County College of Morris (CCM) formally signed a Guaranteed Transfer Agreement on February 16. The partnership will take effect at the start of the Fall semester.

The Guaranteed Transfer Agreement will enable CCM students enrolled in the A.A. or A.S. Teacher Education programs to complete their associate degrees at CCM and seamlessly transfer as a junior in good standing to Bloomfield College’s Division of Education, concentrating in elementary education with subject matter specialization.

“Bloomfield College and County College of Morris share a mutual commitment to student success, and this agreement strengthens this shared goal. We are dedicated to providing options for students to receive the highest quality college

Bloomfield College Joins Cisco Networking Academy

Bloomfield College has joined over 9,000 institutions and has become an official Cisco Networking Academy.

Cisco is the world leader in networking technology. According to Cisco’s website, since 1997, Cisco CSR has invested in the development and promotion of the Cisco Networking Academy, a Cisco Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program.

Joining a global network of diverse educational institutions dedicated to the values and mission of Networking Academy and student success, this partnership will provide Networking Engineering majors at Bloomfield College exclusive access to Cisco courses. These courses provide in-depth technology training and encourages students to solve problems and work together, just as they will in the workplace. Its community of support and training centers prepares students with hands-on labs and provides career-building resources to help students transition from classroom to career path.

“Adding Cisco Academy status to our B.S. in Network Engineering program will give students access to the premier provider of

networking software and education, beyond the important theoretical foundation provided in our courses, and state-of-the-art equipment,” said Carolyn Spies, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. “As a result, our students will be eminently prepared for a career in network administration and highly desirable as employees.”

The Bachelor of Science in Network Engineering program will continue to include the content that elevates the curriculum to the college level; however, becoming a Cisco Networking Academy brings with it many benefits. These benefits include immediate and free access to all Cisco curriculum changes, textbooks, and lab manuals for all Cisco-based courses.

Additionally, students will receive vouchers for discounted certification exam prices; the College will gain access to Cisco’s Packet Tracer, an emulator that mimics the workings of an actual physical network; and the College will receive Cisco equipment for the classroom at a discounted price.

Prior to becoming a Cisco Academy, the Network Engineering program at Bloomfield College utilized virtual networking software for teaching purposes. Although the virtual software proved effective, students will now be better prepared for a career in networking by working on actual hardware thanks to Cisco.

Director of the Center for Career Development

Game Design Program Ranked 2nd in State by Princeton Review

T

he Princeton Review released its ninth annual ranking lists naming the best undergraduate and graduate schools for students to study— and launch a career in—game design. Bloomfield College captured the #2 spot in New Jersey and the #44 spot overall on the undergraduate schools list.

“The CAT Division has a positive community of faculty and staff who are dedicated to supporting our students and concentration,” said Assistant Professor GJ Lee. “It’s wonderful to see our college receive this recognition.”

Bloomfield College’s Bachelor of Arts in Game Design within the Creative Arts & Technology Division is a practice-orientated program focused on core principles, concepts, methodologies and skills that are reinforced through the creation of hands-on projects.

“The schools on our list offer extraordinary opportunities to launch a career in the game industry,” said Robert Franek, The Princeton Review’s Editor in Chief.

“We want to help students find the best program for their needs and interests. The top schools on our lists will give students the skills and experience they need to pursue a career in this dynamic and burgeoning field.”

“National recognition from the Princeton Review validates what we at Bloomfield College witness on a daily basis. We have stellar faculty and programs that are some of the best in the country,” said Dr. Tresmaine Grimes, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty.

s. Diana Mendez has joined Bloomfield College as Director of the Center for Career Development.

The Center for Career Development at Bloomfield College supports and empowers students to be active participants in the career development process. The office prepares students to make informed decisions regarding their future by providing comprehensive resources, advising, programs, and access to internships, employment, and graduate school opportunities.

“Bloomfield College is very fortunate to secure a very talented career coaching professional to lead the Center for Career Development,” said Dr. Patrick Lamy, Vice President for Student Affairs.

Ms. Mendez is a career development and student affairs professional with 11 years of experience in higher education. Ms. Mendez’ experience managing large internship programs comes from her time as an Assistant Director at Pace University, where she managed one of the largest internship programs in the country and won the Jefferson Award Bronze Medal for Public Service. Throughout her career, Ms. Mendez has been deeply committed to enhancing students' university experience by promoting, developing, and executing experiential education programs for diverse student populations.

Ms. Mendez received a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Rutgers University.

Leah Brown-Johnson has joined Bloomfield College as the Director of CITEL. The Center for Innovation in Teaching to Enhance Learning services include a Tutoring Center and Writing Center, Testing and Test Preparation, Academic Support Counseling, Graduate Preparation, a Group Study Hub, and the Office of Adult Education.

An educator and visionary, Johnson comes to Bloomfield College with years of experience in college preparation and retention of first generation college students. Prior to Bloomfield College, Johnson amassed over 15 years of non-profit management experience working with youth in both Harlem, New York, Leah Brown-Johnson and Newark, New Jersey.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from Wesleyan University and a Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Johnson’s career highlights include her time as Program Director for the StreetSquash Program in Harlem where she created the college prep program and the college retention program. The program saw an 83% retention rate for students in college. This was three times the national average at that time (2012), and was six times the national average for the demographic of students Johnson was assisting (low income, inner city youth from under-served or under-resourced schools in Harlem, NY). Seeing the Program’s success, Johnson established and was the Founding Director of the first urban squash college preparatory program in New Jersey (Newark).

Having taught courses in numerous Newark schools, Johnson also has teaching experience and will act as an adjunct professor at the College.

“CITEL is an essential part of building student success at Bloomfield College,” said Dr. Tresmaine Grimes, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. “We are very pleased that Mrs. Brown-Johnson has joined the Bloomfield College community.”

BSN Program Ranked Second in State

T

he Frances M. McLaughlin Division of Nursing at Bloomfield College has been ranked as one of the best Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs in New Jersey, earning the #2 spot.

This marks the second year in a row that Bloomfield College has been ranked in this position by RegisteredNursing.org.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by RegisteredNursing.org as a high ranking nursing program,” said Division Chair Dr. Neddie Serra, EdD, CNE, MSN, RN. “Not only does this accolade applaud the hard work of the Bloomfield College faculty, but it also speaks highly of our wonderful students who strive and work so hard to become professionals.”

Nursing programs were assessed on several factors that represent how well a program supports students toward licensure and beyond including analyzing past and present National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) pass rates, weighted by year.

“Congratulations to all the well-deserving Bloomfield College nursing graduates who helped make our program what it is today, a recognized force in this state,” said Dr. Serra.

loomfield College has an extensive history of supporting its students through a variety of fundraising and awareness activities. In March 2014, the College launched a capital campaign to focus on scholarships aimed at student retention. The College fundraises continuously to support all its academic and recreational activities, as well as housing and student support programs, through fundraising events, donor appeals, grants, an annual scholarship dinner, and much more.

“I am very grateful for the generosity of Trustees, alumni, corporations, and foundations that give their time and talents as well as philanthropic support. This generosity makes for a stronger Bloomfield College,” said Richard A. Levao, College President.

Since arriving at Bloomfield College, President Levao and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, William H. Turner III, have established their leadership in many ways, including embracing and encouraging the importance of philanthropy for the College’s future.

“In my 16th and final year as President of Bloomfield College the Chairman of the Board and I have each made substantial leadership gifts. Just this year, Bestfoods returned after nearly 10 years to bestow the College with $1 million in memory of Alain Labergere, Bestfoods executive vice president and president, Bestfoods Europe. To celebrate one of the largest gifts the College has received, the College will host the Bestfoods Educational Foundation recognition program and reception on campus on Thursday, September 13.

“This is a shining example of what cultivation, engagement, and decades of friendship can do,” said Bartley. “But not for the friendship of the Iversen and the Schuchinski families, this gift never would have happened. Over one thousand students through the years have benefited from this relationship and have gone on to earn their degrees and begin their lives.”

Nicholas Carlozzi, Ph.D. joined the Board in 2004 and he, along with his wife, Cathy, have also established an endowed scholarship, which has culminated in the College naming an area of campus in their names. “Carlozzi Commons” will occupy an outside space near the quad; a special place for Nick and Cathy, who come to commencement every year to cheer on and celebrate students.

A significant relationship the Iversen family introduced to the College is that of the Bestfoods Educational Foundation through Luis and Vivian Schuchinski. Mr. Schuchinski was serving as vice president with Bestfoods Educational Foundation at the time. Now, the College is celebrating an almost 20-year partnership with Bestfoods. Nearly 100% of Bloomfield College students, some homeless, receive need-based financial aid.

75% are Pell Grant eligible, the highest of all private colleges and universities in New Jersey. The

institutions with a “high extended mobility rate.”

That is, from the lowest two quintiles of wealth to the top two quintiles. The other four were the University of West Alabama and three of the colleges in the CUNY system (City University of New York).

It is because of dedicated Trustees and friends like Marren, the Carlozzi family, Bestfoods, and many more, that the College has been able to progress and stay true to its mission. n

n Tuesday, January 9, a group of Bloomfield College Trustees, faculty, staff, students, and alumni had the opportunity to spend “An Afternoon on Wall Street.” The day was complete with a tour of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), guided by Peter Costa, former NYSE Governor, CNBC Market Analyst and Contributor, and Investor, as well as a special program hosted by the Oppenheimer Corporate Offices.

“Oppenheimer provided us with a once in a lifetime opportunity to view the inner workings of an investment company located on Wall Street — the financial hub of the country,” said Bloomfield College alumna and current graduate student, Portia Chimbirai ’16 ’18. “Not only did we meet influential people in the financial world, but we also got the chance to visit the New York Stock Exchange which is the largest equity-based trading platform in the world. I believe the lessons learned from this event will be instrumental in ensuring my success and will last a lifetime.”

Oppenheimer’s A.G. Lowenthal, Chairman and CEO, and John Stoltzfus, Chief Investment Strategist, led a discussion on current economic trends. They shared their journeys to Wall Street and provided the group a crash course in stocks, bonds, Wall Street, and the Federal Reserve.

“Nothing is more exciting than the financial service industry,” stated Lowenthal. “People come to work every day to be engaged in this industry.”

Lowenthal has been Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Oppenheimer & Co. Inc., since 1985. Lowenthal’s extensive experience in the securities industry and as Chief Executive of Oppenheimer gives him unique insights into the Company’s challenges, opportunities, and operations. Since his arrival at the Company, Mr. Lowenthal has built the Company through acquisition and organic growth taking stockholders’ equity from $5 million to $527.6 million at December 31, 2014.

Lowenthal has worked in the securities industry since 1967. Prior to his arrival at Oppenheimer & Co., Lowenthal served as the Chief Executive Officer at Advantage Advisers Management LLC and Advantage Advisers LLC, as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer at First of Michigan Corp, Chief Executive Officer, as President and Chairman at Freedom Investments, Inc., as the President at Cowen Securities Inc., and as a General Partner at Cowen & Co until 1985.

Prior to joining Oppenheimer & Co. Inc., Stoltzfus was Senior Market Strategist at Ticonderoga Securities where he provided all macro, market outlook, and strategy ideas to the firm and its clients. John came to Ticonderoga from Bank of America, where he worked in their Global Wealth & Investment Management Division as Senior Market Strategist in the Investment Strategies Group.

Before Bank of America, Stoltzfus was at Morgan Stanley in a variety of roles, including Vice President of Marketing and Equity Sales, Vice President of Capital Market Solutions, and Vice President of U.S. and International Equity Marketing. In the early 1990s, Stoltzfus worked at Chase Manhattan Bank as Vice President of Investments, CMIS and GNA securities. He holds a B.A. from Colgate University.

The Program was made possible by former Bloomfield College Trustee and alumnus, Mark Whaley ’76, who also shared words of wisdom. Whaley currently serves as the Executive Vice President of the Private Client Division at Oppenheimer.

“I find great pride in being a Bloomfield College alumnus on Wall Street,” said Whaley. “Coming from Bloomfield College is a badge of honor. I compete against people from Yale and Harvard.”

Whaley, who earned a degree in English and later an MBA, was the first in his family to go to college. Raised by a single mother, he didn’t believe he could afford a college education without joining the military and acquiring the GI Bill, but between financial aid, working numerous jobs, and his own savings, he enrolled in Bloomfield College and graduated in three and a half years.

Whaley is responsible for the strategic management of the Firm’s Financial Advisors and branch network. He is also a member of the Management Committee and assists with setting the Firm’s direction by serving on the Operating, Management, Risk Management, and New Product Committees.

He joined Oppenheimer in 2008, after holding a variety of leadership roles in the Industry. He was the President of Gibraltar Securities, an Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of Tucker Anthony Sutro, a Senior Vice President and Regional Director for the Royal Bank of Canada, and a Branch Manager for Bear Stearns. He has managed Middle Market Fixed Income Sales, Private Client Services, and the integration of acquisitions. He is also a former member of FINRA District 9.

Whaley served on the Bloomfield College Board of Trustees from 20022009 as Vice Chair of the Committee on Development and Public Affairs, and as a member of the Student Affairs Committee.

“These are people like you and me. This is not an alien world,” Bloomfield College President Richard A. Levao told Bloomfield College students at the end of the Program. “These gentlemen are showing you what could happen when you become serious about internships, working, and looking for opportunities. It’s amazing the paths that life can lead you down. I want to thank Mr. Lowenthal, Mr. Stoltzfus, and Mr. Whaley for showing our students the other side of what life in finance and business is like.”

This event was part of the College’s year-long 150th anniversary celebration.

In my 50-plus years in the business world, I have never received an invitation to be on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange,” said Robert Collmier, Professor of Accounting. “This was a real learning experience for students and a great kickoff event to the College’s 150th anniversary.” n

n Thursday, April 19, Bloomfield College’s Nursing Recognition Program, Nursing Leaders Panel Discussion and Reception was held. The Division’s namesake, Frances M. McLaughlin ’45, was honored for her distinguished service, dedication to the nursing profession, and commitment to the future nurses and graduates of Bloomfield College.

“Among the most prestigious programs we have at Bloomfield College is the nursing program, which holds the second highest NCLEX pass rate in the state of New Jersey,” said College President, Richard A. Levao. “We are so delighted and proud to carry the Frances M. McLaughlin name. We are honored to present her today with the Presidential Medal of Excellence.”

The Presidential Medal of Excellence is an honor bestowed upon only a few select individuals who best exemplify leadership, diversity, engagement, and the ideals of Bloomfield College. It is rarely given out at the College and President Levao noted that the last medal he conferred was over one decade ago “I am so happy that you are all here today. I am grateful for this magnificent honor and I am also grateful that I am still here!” quipped Fran as the room applauded and filled with laughter.

Fran began her nursing journey on September 14, 1942, 76 years ago, at the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. Fran graduated in 1945 and became a teacher there in 1949. In 1962, Fran was called off the floor at the hospital by the hospital director while she was supervising students and told that “as of 15 minutes ago, you are now the school’s director. Go find out what you need to know before the previous director leaves.”

The Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing enjoyed an excellent reputation (it was rated in the top 25 percent of nursing schools in the nation according to the National Grading Report of 1932) and Fran wanted to make sure her students had access to the highest academic standards available.

During this same time in Bloomfield College

history, the Board of Trustees was taking a critical look at the College’s offerings and was considering eliminating the seminary and becoming a full liberal arts college. Fran had written a position paper investigating the possibility of moving the school of nursing to a college in order to confer baccalaureate degrees to the nursing students.

Her first attempt to sell her idea with the dean, Dr. Ralph Caulkins, was turned down primarily due to the cost to the College for faculty and facilities. Not to be deterred, Fran met with the president, the Rev. Dr. Theodore Rath, and proposed a division of nursing at Bloomfield College. President Rath was willing to consider the idea and they met with the Board of Trustees.

The Board challenged Fran to find funding.

The dean, the director of development, and Fran approached area businesses and the state govern-

ment for seed money and, in 1967, with enough to get started, began the process of developing a curriculum. The Presbyterian Hospital willingly donated equipment and the entire nursing text and resource library as well as some funding to the fledgling Presbyterian Division of Nursing at Bloomfield College. In 1968, the first nursing classes were held on the Bloomfield College campus. In 1972, the first class of students from the Presbyterian Division of Nursing at Bloomfield College graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. The Division also has the distinction of being the only school in New Jersey that has evolved from a diploma program to a baccalaureate program.

According to the lady who started it all, “The smartest move I ever made was knocking on the dean’s door at Bloomfield College.”

On September 17, 2009, the Presbyterian Division of Nursing was renamed the Frances M. McLaughlin Division of Nursing.

The officers of the Alumni Association of the Frances M. McLaughlin '45 Division of Nursing received certificates for their dedication to the profession and for providing an endowed scholarship to Bloomfield College to help future nurses complete their degrees. These members included Frances M. McLaughlin '45; Ruth Sulc '45; Edwina Zengerle '52; Josephine Giorgi '54; Dr. Joan Higgins '56; Marilyn O'Neill '56; Shirley Alino '57; Marlene Potts '61; and Helene McKnight '84.

A nursing panel followed these recognitions, with Dr. Neddie Serra, EdD, CNE, MSN, RN, Chair of the Division, acting as moderator. Thelesha Gray '13, Nurse Epidemiologist, New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, and Judy Padula, Chief Nursing Officer, St. Joseph's Health, joined Fran on the panel.

“I am deeply honored and happy to receive this beautiful medal. It has been a very special day in my life. Thank you,” closed Fran. n

A STARTUP IS BORN

embers of the Bloomfield College community have come together to help a young alumnus secure office space for his startup. This initiative has also created a wonderful internship program for current students.

“I’ve always believed that the BCAA should be more than just an organization that plans galas and social events. Assisting this alumnus with his business who, in turn, will be providing internships for our students is a perfect way for the BCAA to make a difference at the College. I hope to see more projects like this in the future,” said BCAA President, John Murdock.

Ray Rivera ’08, an Essex County native, graduated from Bloomfield College from the Division of Creative Arts & Technology (CAT) with a double specialization in Multimedia Design and Game Design. He is a freelancer and the founder of SkyTank Labs. Rivera works on a variety of projects from healthcare benefit apps to virtual reality tourism. Leading up to starting his own business, Rivera worked as a salaried professional for six years at IMP Digital, a digital production studio in Paramus.

“Working with the College in the space they helped provide means a great deal to myself and the growth of my business. Having a dedicated, private space to operate from allows me have in-house freelancers and interns. It also allows me to host meetings with potential partners and clients,” shared Rivera. “Most importantly, I can provide Bloomfield College students on-campus internship opportunities and real-world work experiences. If not for Bloomfield College’s assistance, this would have been much more difficult to accomplish.”

No stranger to his alma mater, Rivera had previously worked with current CAT student, Michael Stoess, on a virtual 360 tour of campus for visitors and prospective students. “Everything we did for the project was a learning experience and nothing ever felt unimportant or tedious,” said Stoess, at the time. “While working on the project, I was always excited to wake up and start the day, it really showed me that this is the career I truly wish to pursue.”

scholarship evening, Stoess approached fellow alumnus and Trustee John Skowronski ’91 in hopes of finding a way to help Rivera secure permanent space at the College so he could continue to work with current students in an internship arrangement. Unfortunately, Skowronski quickly discovered that there was no available space on the small campus.

“Michael deserves a lot of credit. It is because of him I became willing to not only reach out to the College, but take it to the next level when the College was unable to provide Rivera with space.

I felt compelled to support the project and asked the BCAA to do the same,” shared Skowronski.

Along with the BCAA, Skowronski began looking for potential space near Bloomfield College. Upon realizing that Trustee Jacquie Colgan and her husband, Bill, owned 2 Broad Street, a building in which space was already being leased to the College, Skowronski met with Ms. Colgan.

The Colgans enthusiastically offered space on the same floor as the College, all in support of Bloomfield College students. Because of the Colgans’ generosity, coupled with Skowronski’s support toward the rent which the BCAA happily matched, Rivera was able to sign a lease. He will be occupying the space rent free his first year.

“We are so pleased that a Bloomfield College alumnus of Ray’s stature has returned to give back to students who are currently in the Creative Arts and Technology program,” said Dr. Tresmaine Grimes, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. Dr. Grimes was instrumental in helping Rivera gain network access for his office and, through her support, the project was fasttracked. “Ray’s extensive experience will provide two student interns with experience and exposure in preparation for their own careers. This is a tremendous opportunity for the College.”

Rivera has already begun working with Yuichiro Nishizawa, Chair of the Creative Arts & Technology division, to develop the internship program.

“I am thrilled about the startup and am grateful for the generous contribution by Mr. John Skowronski, Mrs. and Mr. Jacquie and Bill Colgan, the BCAA, and Bloomfield College to make this

happen,” said Professor Nishizawa, who noted some computers were donated by his contact, Ms. Rebecca Lee, at the NYC office of Glen Raven as well. “While pursuing their creative career, many of our Bloomfield College students wish to contribute back. Ray is creating an on-campus internship opportunity for our existing students.

We are making a blueprint for other alumnus to follow! This is CAT. This is what Bloomfield College is about.”

Current Bloomfield College students will soon be able to earn college credit, as well as realworld experience, all within steps of the College.

“My personal goal is to see this as a spark that starts a much larger program where we can help our students segue into the real world and help stimulate a vibrant high-tech environment in downtown Bloomfield and put us on the map,” said Skowronski. “When parents ask about what we do to help students gain experience in their chosen fields and secure jobs after graduation, I hope that this becomes a shining example of what can and is being done.” n

and she held the Laura Carnell Chair in English at Temple University. She is the recipient of the Harper Lee Award, 2004, Alabama Distinguished Writer, and the National Visionary Leadership Award for 2006.

The day also consisted of an exciting line-up of writing workshops, readings, and panel discussions with distinguished writers and scholars. Attendees had the opportunity to select from a variety of workshop offerings, which engaged various aspects of the issue of marginality as it pertains to race, culture, class, gender, etc. The day concluded with readings and book signings by writers including Jane Wong, Ysabel Gonzalez, Roberto Garcia, Kem Joy Ukwu, and Keisha-Gaye Anderson.

Writing from the Margins connected writers and readers in a dynamic exploration of the power and potential of literature.

n March 23, 2018, Bloomfield College hosted its second biennial “Writing from the Margins.” This event was made possible by a generous grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.

Renowned poet Sonia Sanchez joined the event as keynote speaker. Bloomfield College Trustees, President Levao, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and guests gathered to meet Ms. Sanchez and hear her keynote address.

Before speaking herself, Ms. Sanchez called Bloomfield College alumna, Amanda S. Kibler ’12, to the stage to share a piece of her own personal poetry entitled, “An Ode to Sonia Sanchez.”

Ms. Sanchez then made her powerful presence felt as she weaved together her speech with her poetry, delivering poignant and timeless pieces such as Norma. Her rendition brought many in the audience to tears, with Ms. Sanchez also becoming choked up.

“Someone asked me, “‘Why do you write?’ And I said, ‘Because I wanted to tell people how I became this woman with razor blades between her teeth,’” said Ms. Sanchez.

Ms. Sanchez is the author of over 16 books. A recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts, the Lucretia Mott Award for 1984, the Outstanding Arts Award from the Pennsylvania Coalition of 100 Black Women, and the Community Service Award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, she is a winner of the 1985 American Book Award for Homegirls and Handgrenades, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Humanities for 1988, the Peace and Freedom Award from Women International League for Peace and Freedom (W.I.L.P.F.) for 1989, a PEW Fellowship in the Arts for 1992-1993, and the recipient of The Langston Hughes Poetry Award for 1999. She is the Poetry Society of America’s 2001 Robert Frost Medalist and a Ford Freedom Scholar from the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

Ms. Sanchez has lectured at over 500 universities and colleges in the United States and has traveled extensively.

WELCOME TO GLOBAL GAME

he last weekend of January marked Bloomfield College’s third annual participation in the Global Game Jam (GGJ) event, which sees contestants attempt to create a stand-alone game in just 48 hours. Bloomfield College first hosted Global Jam in 2016.

The Global Game Jam is the world’s largest game jam event (game creation) and takes place around the world at physical locations. The weekend stirs a global creative buzz in games, while at the same time explores the process of development, be it programming, iterative design, narrative exploration, or artistic expression. “Hosting the event at Bloomfield College is far more valuable because it builds community here, making lasting connections between students, alumni, faculty, and local professionals,” said GJ Lee, Assistant Professor. “Our students meet and collaborate with alumni and professionals.

This goes beyond networking; it fosters meaningful and lasting relationships.

Alumni share their professional/postgrad experiences with our students and further their own professional development. Local creatives see the Center for Technology+Creativity as an accessible resource and facility. The community that forms from events like GGJ create opportunities for everyone.”

This year, the theme was ‘transmission.’ Participants, also known as “jammers,” were challenged to make games based on that theme, with

games to be completed by Sunday afternoon. Some created digital games (video games, mobile games, virtual reality, augmented reality) or non-digital games (board games, card games, physical games, escape room games).

On Sunday, the event was open to the public, who were encouraged to play many of the games created in the last 48 hours.

“The values of Global Game Jam are innovation, experimentation, and collaboration, which lines up perfectly with our approach in the Creative Arts & Technology Division,” continued Professor Lee. “Working together to create something out of nothing provides a unique shared

experience: barriers between students, alumni, faculty, and local industry professionals are broken, as they all become equals, form teams, and make games within the same highly challenging controls as everyone else around the entire globe.”

For example, CAT faculty member Alyssa Menes created 10 music compositions for 10 different teams, a meaningful accomplishment for her, and a wonderful opportunity for Bloomfield College students to work side-by-side with an experienced professional and faculty member.

This event was made possible by the support of the Creative Arts & Technology Division, CSLE, the student-run Game Development Club, the College’s local event sponsor: The Sheep's Meow, and the Global Game Jam organization.

College Commemorates the Life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. loomfield College commemorated the life and labor of MLK on campus on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

“I hope we act in ways that are helpful. I hope we act in ways that better the world and enrich rather than tear down,” said Dr. Tresmaine Grimes, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, in her opening remarks. “Today, we are dealing with many of the same challenges as Dr. King did in his time, but I do not believe his death was in vain.”

“We all remember where we were when Dr. King was killed,” remarked Trustee and 150th Sesquicentennial Committee co-chair, Rosemary Iversen. “I had a very young baby at the time and when I saw what had happened on the news, I remember becoming worried for the future of our children.”

mbry, Jr., adjunct professor of Religious Studies at the College; Bloomfield College senior Kiamsha Bynes; and Dr. Kristopher Burrell, Assistant Professor of History at Hostos Community CollegeCUNY, discussed Rev. Dr. King and his legacy.

“Bloomfield College provided me with a quintessential education. Had it not been for this college bringing students like me up from poverty, I do not know where I would be,” said alumnus Rev. Maurice Bowden ’82, who traveled to campus from Baltimore to attend the event. “I was a child when Dr. King was assassinated. He became my invisible mentor. Bloomfield College practices a mantra very similar to what MLK preached.”

Ruby Sales, public theologian, historian, activist, social critic, and educator, joined the event as keynote speaker. Sales participated, at the age of 17, in the Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965.

Tom Coleman, who was a special county

deputy, shot and killed one of Sales' fellow marchers, Jonathan Daniels, a white Episcopal seminarian, in a store in front of Sales. Sales was so traumatized by Daniels' murder that she lost the ability to speak for seven months. Sales resolved to testify at Tom Coleman's trial. He was acquitted by a jury of 12 white men. The result of the trial led to legal challenges and a reform of the jury selection procedures, which had long excluded African Americans.

Sales earned her B.A. in American History in 1971 from Manhattanville College and then enrolled in graduate school at Princeton University.

Between 1971 and 1976, she was a Danforth Scholar, and advanced to Ph.D. candidacy in American History before leaving the University. In 1994, Sales entered the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts and, in 1998, received her master’s of divinity. She currently lives in Washington, D.C.

Nurses’ Pinning and Baccalaureate he Frances M. McLaughlin Division of Nursing at Bloomfield College celebrated its graduating nursing students on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at its annual Nurses’ Pinning.

The pinning ceremony is a time-honored nursing school tradition. It signifies students’ official initiation into the nursing profession. The modern ceremony dates back to the 1860s, when Florence Nightingale was awarded the Red Cross of Saint George in recognition for her unstinting service to the wounded during the Crimean War. To share the honor, she in turn presented a medal of excellence to her brightest graduates. By 1916, the practice was commonplace throughout the United States.

Following Nurses’ Pinning, students were honored for their academic achievements at Bloomfield College’s annual Baccalaureate ceremony.

Highlighting students who achieved a high GPA while pursuing honor society membership, graduates received honors cords for earning cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude distinctions.

Students also received cords for their work in the institution’s honors societies, with Alpha Chi (all majors), Delta Mu Delta (Business), Kappa Delta Pi (Education), Psi Chi (Psychology) and Sigma Theta Tau (Nursing) bestowing their organization’s highest honor on the group of distinguished academics.

Dr. Glen Hayes, Associate Professor of Religion and dedicated member of the Division of Humanities since 1980, delivered the baccalaureate address. The following day at Commencement, Dr. Hayes, now retired, received faculty emeritus status.

President’s Dinner

n Thursday, May 17, 2018, Bloomfield College hosted its annual President’s Dinner at the Cedar Hill Country Club in Livingston.

“I want to thank all 230 guests for joining us tonight. Since the last commencement, one thing that's very important is that we're celebrating a sesquicentennial anniversary,” said President Richard A. Levao. “The evening clearly demonstrates what the College is all about: celebrating the successes of Bloomfield College students.”

In a special moment, Board of Trustee members received pins in recognition of serving 15 years or more on the Board. The College also honored former trustees with emeritus status and presented them with a Trustee Service Pin. Vice Chair Rosemary Iversen; Vice Chair John Delucca ’66; Former Chairman of the Board and 2015 honorary degree recipient, Martin McKerrow; 1998 honorary degree recipient, Adrian Shelby; Steve Glasser; Hank Uberoi; Nick Carlozzi; Maureen Grant; Nancy Van Duyne; Nancy Lane; and Trustee Emerita Alice Price all were recognized.

Later in the evening, a graduating student from each of the seven academic divisions spoke about the impact Bloomfield College made on their lives. These students included Education major, Johnny Vega; Psychology major, Amanda Faison; Accounting major,

Gabby Borrero; Biology major, Gonzalo Marques; Creative Arts & Technology major, Brandon Collins; Nursing student, Shakira Drones, who also used her time at the podium to announce that she would be establishing a yearly $1,000 scholarship at the College; and English major, Jessi Melendez.

“My family was afflicted with many of the same struggles that distress millions of other immigrant families in the U.S. We were a humble family with a roof over our heads, and just enough food on the table to stave off hunger,” said Marques. “Academia was my way of reciprocating my parents’ hard work. Bloomfield College was a place for me to cultivate my curiosity, my talents, my interests; it was a journey like no other.”

“I grew up in a broken household in Newark.

Some may say growing up in an environment with negative role models will lead you down the wrong path, but I am a living example of one who was able to take that negativity to fuel a drive to steer me in the opposite direction,” expressed Collins.

“I often had to take semesters off to work to save money so I could continue my courses. Although the process was long, I was encouraged to continue on,” said Drones. “Bloomfield College has provided me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of becoming an

educated African American woman. My journey has taught me to be resilient, to stay focused, and to chase your dreams.”

“A home is more than a place,” said Melendez, who shared intimate details her experience with PTSD and homelessness. “A home is the people who make that place feel special, and the people at Bloomfield College have made this a home for me; it is because of these people I get to go to my top graduate school choice with a full ride. I am going to make you all proud.”

n Wednesday, April 11, as part of Bloomfield College’s 150th anniversary, the College welcomed Trustees, faculty, staff, students, and alumni to the Natural Science and Mathematics Alumni Panel Discussion and Reception on campus.

Dr. Michael Schiro, Mathematics professor, was recognized for his 50 years of service and presented with a certificate by President Levao.

“My time at Bloomfield College predates this building,” Dr. Schiro quipped, referencing College Hall. Dr. Schiro reflected on his first time on campus in 1968, when he was deciding between job offers.

“Once on this campus, I realized really quick that there were some really good people here who wanted, and could, get stuff done. I wanted to get stuff done.

So I decided to stay at Bloomfield College.”

“Dr. Schiro has been a vibrant, contributing member of the Bloomfield College community for 50 years. During that time, he has been on the forefront of new ideas, new programs, and innovation.

His years of dedicated service to the College are valued and appreciated by the entire college community.”

Dr. Jim Murphy, Chair of the Division of Natural Science and Mathematics and Biology professor, moderated the alumni panel. Dr. Murphy has been with the College for 25 years.

The panel included Dr. Michael De Castro '01, Associate Professor, Farmingdale State CollegeSUNY. “Bloomfield College felt like home,” reflected Dr. Castro. “Chemistry is my calling. I haven’t worked a day in my life because I am doing what I am passionate about.”

Joining Dr. Castro was Erika Ramirez '10, Manager of Global Compliance Operations, Celgene Corp. “Chemistry is my passion, and

Danielle Patterson '13 worked for five years as a Clinical Histotechnologist with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and has recently continued her career with the Bio Defense.

“As alumni, we are supposed to give back to our community,” said Patterson. “Bloomfield College has awarded us so much. I’m lucky to have been employed in my desired field immediately upon graduation.”

Rounding out the panel was Marcia Reynolds '94, a Bloomfield High School Science Faculty Member. “Chemistry is a way for me to keep my brain alive!” said Reynolds, who attended the College part time while working full time.

he Division of Creative Arts & Technology’s Conference, Alumni Panel, and Luncheon was held on Saturday, March 24, featuring an Artist Talk by Flash Rosenberg, a Guggenheim Fellow in the Creative Arts and “Attention Span for Hire” who draws, photographs, writes and performs.

As artist in residence for LIVE from the New York Public Library she live-drew literary discussions in real time to create animated “Conversation Portraits.” She translates complex concepts into instant drawings for major clients, such as Visa, Gatorade, the nation of Mexico, Verizon, the Ford Foundation and the UN — and has created animations for PNC Bank, Advanced Solutions International, CNBC, Random House, Houghton Mifflin, Amazon Publishing, and many more. Her “FlashThink” cartoons were a weekly feature on Archetypes.com.

Her animations were featured on Broadway for The Rascals’ “Once Upon a Dream.” She is a Mainstage storyteller for The Moth, a performer in “Monologues and Madness,” a member of the poetry collective “brevitas,” and was the official DoodleClown for the New York Clown Theater Festival. She teaches Live-Drawing at The Art Students League and is the host of “Flash Perception Lab.” Rosenberg, who legally changed her name to “Flash” once a nickname stuck, delivered an

energetic and colorful keynote address to members of the Board, President Levao, faculty, staff, students, and alumni in the black box studio on campus.

“Stay curious, stay fun,” Rosenberg urged the crowd. “The better your ability is to see into the future, the longer you’re allowed to live to see it! That’s what I like to think.”

In an unorthodox fashion, at the conclusion of her time at the podium, Rosenberg opened the floor to questions, both from the crowd and herself. She presented guests with questions such as, “What surprises you?” “What do you wish people would ask you?” and “If you could ask the future a question, what would it be?”

Following Rosenberg, the room broke for portfolio reviews and reconvened for the alumni panel that was moderated by Peter Gordon, Professor of Music at the College. The panel featured Peter Parlegreco '09, Graphic Designer at BioReference Laboratories; Tim Fernandez ’08, Graphic Designer for Print & Digital Media at Harding Loevner LP; Jennifer Martinez ’15, a 3D Animator at NextWave; Ali Onque ’17, Junior Mobile Director at Dom & Tom; Cristina Wulff ’14, Animation Teacher at Cicely Tyson School in East Orange; and Justin Roberts ’17, who recently released his music.

rom April 7 - 9, the Company @ Bloomfield College debuted its first full-length production. They performed In The Room, Waiting, three nights to standing-room only crowds. The audience was mesmerized by the level of talent displayed by Bloomfield College students.

“I can really relate to this play,” echoed Naja Long '20, who plays the role of Aisha. “It has so much to offer in terms of current reality.”

Directed by Thaddeus McCants, who was onsite for the production, In the Room, Waiting is a funny and moving look at fate, choice, and compassion. The play focuses on Malcolm and Aisha, a young couple who get into a tumultuous disagreement over whether or not to bring a child into the world. As denizens file in from every strata of society, and corner of crazy, they unknowingly help the couple find their way, even if they aren’t always friendly about it. In The Room, Waiting is a bawdy and intelligent look into how each decision we make changes our path through the universe.

“This show is important because it speaks to issues that at times are over-politicized and therefore dehumanized,” said McCants. “I couldn’t be more impressed at the talent, professionalism, and energy of the students at Bloomfield College.”

According to Founding Director and Producer and Assistant Professor of Rhetoric, Dr. Freddie Harris, In the Room, Waiting was the perfect play to launch The Company.

“I want to produce plays that are new and fresh and that speak to the issues that our students care about, not what we think that they should care about, but art that speaks to them and represents them. In the Room, Waiting is that play,” Dr. Harris stated. “In this political landscape, it is becoming increasingly apparent that young people are picking up the slack and challenging the status quo. And many, especially students at Bloomfield College, are doing that through their art.”

College Appoints Two New Trustees

Sandra Gonzalez n 2017, Bloomfield College welcomed Sandra Gonzalez, Senior Counsel for Goya Foods, and Dr. Thomas Wilfrid, former Executive Director of The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, to its Board of Trustees.

For the past 12 years, Sandra Gonzalez has served Goya as inhouse counsel. Her focus has been managing a variety of complex real estate transactions and commercial contracts for the company. In addition, Ms. Gonzalez oversees and provides counsel to various business lines within the Company on a broad array of legal, risk management, and compliance issues. She

loomfield College continues to invite student-athletes to ‘Write their own story’ at the collegiate level with the introduction of women’s bowling as announced by the Director of Athletics, Sheila Wooten. The NCAA intercollegiate sport is set to begin in the 2018-19 academic year and will bring the Bears’ total athletic programs offered to 12.

“With the recent addition of Men’s and Women’s Track & Field and their quick rise to success, we are excited to be able to offer bowling for the upcoming academic year and give incoming students a chance to choose Bloomfield and experience competing at this level,” Wooten said.

“We hope to take advantage of our location to attract the best and brightest in the area to help build a successful program.”

The Bears’ athletic director also announced the hiring of Brianna Balkin as the head of coach of Bloomfield’s newest program. Balkin graduated from Nutley High School where she was a four-year varsity starter on the bowling team. Balkin attended Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) and was a member of the University’s first-ever NCAA National Championship team in 2006. In 2007 and 2009, FDU earned trips to the NCAA Division I Tournament and were national semifinalists.

As a coach, Balkin began at Lyndhurst High School in 2013. In five seasons, her teams garnered four league championships, three Bergen County Group 1-2 championships, one Bergen County Overall Championship, two North 1A Group 1 championships, and one North 1A Group 2 championship. In 2015, they were Group 1 State Champions as well as the first ever team from North Jersey to win a New Jersey Tournament of Champions (TOC) title.

Her teams won 70 matches in a row and held the longest win streak in New Jersey in any sport in league play. She also coached them to four undefeated seasons in a row from 2014-2017. Brianna was named the NJIC Meadowlands Division Coach of the Year four times.

“It’s exciting to become a part of the Bloomfield College family and build this program from the ground up,” Balkin said of her hiring. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to coach at the collegiate level and look forward to developing a team that performs well both on the lanes and in the classroom.”

The Bears’ women’s bowling team will compete as an associate member of the East Coast Conference (ECC) when they open up their inaugural season in the Fall. n

Prior to her position at Goya Foods, Ms. Gonzalez acquired over 10 years of experience working as an associate at various firms throughout New Jersey including Graham Curtin, P.A., where she focused on transactional work, and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where she advised on tax minimization strategies.

The first in her family to go to college, she earned a BA in Political Science from Penn State University, a JD from Fordham University, and a Taxation LL.M from Georgetown Law.

Thomas N. Wilfrid was appointed to the Board shortly after retiring from a long career in higher education and philanthropy. At Mercer County Community College, from 1969 through 2007, he taught physics, mathematics, and computer science and held administrative positions, including fifteen years as Vice President for Academic Affairs and two years as Acting President. He also served on or chaired more than twenty accreditation teams at colleges and universities throughout the Middle States region.

From 2007 through 2016, Dr. Wilfrid served as Executive Director

of The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, which awards scholarship grants to colleges and universities, including Bloomfield College, in support of mature women students and students with disabilities.

Upon their retirement, Dr. Wilfrid and his wife, Diane, established the Tom and Diane Wilfrid Scholarship Fund for Single Parent Scholars at Bloomfield College, with significant help from the Newcombe Foundation’s Trustees.

“I have always been impressed

by Bloomfield College. My respect for the College grew as I worked with President Levao and members of his staff during my leadership roles at Mercer County Community College and The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation,” said Dr. Wilfrid. “Now retired, my wife Diane and I have chosen Bloomfield College as a primary focus for our charitable giving. I look forward to working with other Trustees to help Bloomfield thrive during the coming years, which promise to be very challenging for many private colleges and universities.”

The Wilfrids, who reside in Lawrence Township (Mercer County), are active volunteers in their community and in the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville.

Among Dr. Wilfrid’s past positions in Lawrence were Mayor, Board of Education President, and Planning Board Chair.

Dr. Wilfrid earned a BS in Physics from The Cooper Union, an MA in Physics from Princeton University, and a PhD in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2010, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Rider University.

1968 Judie ’68 and Joe ’64 Wilcox Judie and Joe are thankful to Bloomfield College for being matchmaker. Joe graduated in 1964, the same year Judie graduated from high school.

Joe went to Vermont for a few years and taught in the small town of Bristol and also was a ski instructor at Glen Ellen.

Judie began her studies in the fall of 1964 at Bloomfield College. Fast forward a few years, and Joe returned to Bloomfield College as an

work study program. Judie needed a job and met with Joe to be placed in the main office with Mrs. Furtney, who was in charge. They began dating after that, fell in love, and became engaged in April 1967. They were married in June 1968 at the Livingston Presbyterian Church by Dean David O. Roberts of Bloomfield College and Rev. Bill Ackerman (graduate of Bloomfield College). They are celebrating 50 years of marriage this year and look back fondly at their chance meeting that turned into a lifetime of happy memories. They are the proud parents of two sons and their wives Elliott Wilcox (Destiny) and Ethan Wilcox (Rasmiyyah) and grandson Remy Wilcox ( son of Elliott and Destiny).

Reeves because of a lack of a goal keeper. It was there that he was injected with a passion for the game. He was a fourtime first team all CACC keeper and a Regional All American and continued playing into his 40’s until parenting took over and all three of his daughters played the game. He met great friends and teammates during those years and still run into them today.

“I will leave you with the great coaches for whom I had the pleasure of playing; John Reeves, Al Restaino, Bob Nichols, and Bob Bannon. I have continued to attend the basketball games for the last 10 years and enjoy it immensely.”

He lives in Randolph, New Jersey with his wife, Jileen, and daughters Amanda, Casey, and Robyn.

He owns Churchill Rugs & Carpets, a flooring store in Montclair. He still plays music (Fender Bass) and enjoys traveling.

Brian K. Lawton ’99 Savannah State University has named Maj. Lawton as the interim chief for the university’s police force. Lawton began his law enforcement career with the Georgia State University Police Department in 2000, where he has served on various assignments for the campus, according to a press release from SSU. Lawton has been leading the patrol division at all Georgia State campuses and has the responsibility for both the Pedestrian Safety Team Traffic Motors Division and Crime Suppression Team.

Lawton has also been supervising the Internal Affairs Division and assisting the department’s accreditation team at Georgia State.

2013 Christopher Cancel ’13 Chris is the creator of the “My Life as an American Hero” graphic novel franchise. He received his MFA from Full Sail University and after watching a lot of 9/11 documentaries and a lot of anime shows, he was inspired to create a graphic novel to help people surpass tragic events. The first book is available for purchase and he is currently working on book two, “My Life as an American Hero 2.”

Terri Hunter ’13 Terri transferred to the College in 2010. “During my time at Bloomfield College, the professors not only challenged me intellectually, but also challenged me into becoming a better professional.

Bloomfield College provided me with the necessary tools I needed to successfully attend graduate school.”

After graduating from Bloomfield College, she attended Caldwell University

Counseling Psychology, with hopes of earning a Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) and becoming a New Jersey Licensed Psychologist. To aid in her career goals, she works as a Mental Health Associate at Newark Beth Israel Hospital in the Involuntary, Voluntary, and Child and Adolescent psychiatric units.

She is also a Licensed Mental Health and Substance Abuse Clinician at CenterPath.

After finishing her degree, Tysha later accomplished her dream

2015 Jaclyn Kosh ’15 In 2014, while living on campus, Jaclyn met the love of her life, Ray (2017 graduate). Ray was on the baseball and she was on the soccer team.

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we share with you that Paula Craig ’94, a dedicated employee, dear friend to everyone at the College, and alumna, passed away on June 2. I know that those of you who knew her share our grief.

This loss has been incredibly sad for the faculty, staff, and students who have been touched by Paula’s loving presence. This heartbreaking tragedy has shocked us all, and we will miss her greatly.

Paula will forever be missed. If she was involved in an event on campus, you knew it was always going to be a smashing success. She will always be with us in spirit.

In reflecting on Paula's life, everyone has a story to share of how Paula lifted their spirits, impacted their life in a meaningful way, or put a smile on their face with just the briefest encounter. She was unforgettable.

Remembering

John

B

eloved donor and friend of the College, John T. Lyons, passed away on March 29, 2018. John devoted most of his adult life to serving his country, first as a combat marine in Vietnam and later as an attorney.

John was introduced to Bloomfield College through his wife, Christa Lyons, whose family shares a long history with the College.

Born in 1911 in Paris, Christa’s father, Kurt Munchheimer, later entered medical school in Frankfurt, Germany. Being half Jewish, his life took a dramatic turn when the Nazis began their horrific rise in Europe. With an anonymous benefactor, Kurt managed to finish his schooling, although he was considered ineligible to work under the Nuremberg laws. Persevering, he found a medical position in which he was able to get a license from the British Colonial Office to serve as the managing doctor for a leper colony in Nigeria. Going with him was his soonto-be wife, Christa’s mother, Hilde.

As England declared war on Germany, they were put on parole and then deported to an internment camp in Jamaica. Eventually, the family was reunited in a family camp, which closed at the end of the war, leading the family to be split up again. At this point in their lives came a critical juncture: should they return to Germany, try to gain employment in Africa, or attempt to immigrate to the United Sates?

Christa’s father attempted to gain access to the U.S. by applying to seminaries. Kurt and his family met Dr. Schweitzer and Dr. Jung, two seminary professors at Bloomfield Theological Seminary. At Bloomfield, Kurt, Hilde, and their children Peter, Christa, Walter, began their new life. Ultimately, Kurt and Hilde set up house in Rio Dell, California, practicing medicine and preaching. Christa’s father became involved in conservation efforts, served on the city council, including one term as mayor, and retired from his medical practice in 1977, only to become a medical missionary in Cameroon.

marry John Lyons, a graduate of Notre Dame Law, who shared many of the same admirable traits as her father.

Together, they established an endowed scholarship at Bloomfield College for immigrant students in memory of Kurt. The scholarship is designed to continue the family tradition of better education, a chance for improving one’s life, and opening new doors to foreign students.

“Bloomfield College gave my family room and board and made sure my family’s needs were met.

They opened the doors to America,” Christa said at the time.

John and Christa created their own legacy at Bloomfield College through his scholarship, and opened John’s eyes to the College and its mission. Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Jackie Bartley, had the privilege of getting to know John and Christa the last few years and attended his celebration of life on May 20. About three months prior to his passing, Jackie had visited John and Christa in Alexandria to update them on all the 150th events going on at Bloomfield College.

“When I first met Christa and John, I was embraced with open arms. John shared that he grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts. I’ve known many people from there. John fit that bill of being hardworking and from very humble beginnings.

John, like Christa’s father, was someone who had to overcome extraordinary circumstances to be successful.”

In her memorial tribute, Jackie remarked,

“John once said that ‘education is the path for a better future.’ He was always so open to hearing our students’ stories. How they were first-generation students, some of whom were homeless or from broken homes, having to hold down multiple jobs to continue in their schooling.

Those were the students John believed in most.”

“John’s enthusiasm and passion for helping those less fortunate find a path to success never waned,” Jackie said, in closing. “I know you are with us today, John, looking down as we celebrate you and your well-lived life. Your spirit lives on in all of us. You were the best of the best.” n
