2021 - 2022

From the President’s Desk

Dear Friends of the Villa,

As I write for this year’s Villa Voice, I am completing my last week at St. Ursula Villa. As I reflect on the memories, growth, and accomplishments over the past 14 years of my tenure, I am grateful for the many hats I have worn and all I have learned as Technology Coordinator, Director of Operations, Assistant Principal, Principal, and President. The memories that I take with me are those of the people and the relationships my family and I have made over these years. Memories I treasure and will carry with me fondly into the next chapter of my career.

In this edition of the Villa Voice, you will read about the exciting developments and vision that has happened at the Villa this past year. Most notably, the Villa’s partnership with the Institute of School and Parish Development (ISPD), a strategic planning consulting firm out of New Orleans, that created the framework for a long-range strategic growth plan for the school. With the support of ISPD, we invited over 1,500 members of the Villa community to provide input, expertise, recommendation, and direction for the Villa for the next five years. Of those 1,500 community members, over 200 participated in in-person workshops, culminating in a convocation to prioritize St. Ursula Villa’s strategic initiatives. Once the plan is finalized, the school will form implementation teams and communicate more about the plan with the school community around the start of the school year.

With my departure, I wish to welcome Jody Sedler back to the St. Ursula Villa staff as the Interim President for the 2022-2023 school year. I am grateful for Jody’s selfless response to the call to this leadership role and her acceptance of the challenge to begin implementing the strategic growth plan and transition the Villa to its next president. Jody’s many years in the St. Ursula Villa community and time on the Board of Trustees allow for a seamless experience for our students and community.

I am proud that we developed a theme that truly represents the collective mission of our caring faculty and dedicated staff … “Without doubt, you will see marvelous things.” I truly believe that you can see amazing things happening every day at the Villa and, with new leadership and our strategic plan, you will experience it even more. I will be forever thankful to those who have walked with me during my journey with St. Ursula Villa and I want to recognize, with gratitude, all the St. Ursula Villa students, parents, staff, and friends for their dedication to the Villa and its mission. I know I leave the school in the most capable and caring hands. The Villa is an extraordinary place, and I look forward to watching its continued success for many years to come.

Sincerely,

Charting the Course for the Villa’s Future

Building on the strengths, identifying the opportunities, and exploring the challenges was the charge of the 100+ volunteers and staff who came together to create a 2022 Strategic Plan.

St. Ursula Villa's last strategic plan was conducted in 2015 and provided a visionary roadmap for the school to follow. This plan focused on the critical planning areas that have guided us for the past seven years. As with any plan, conditions change, environments are altered and new opportunities present themselves. With all that we have faced these past few years, The Board of Trustees felt strongly that we needed to identify and understand future needs of the school, students, and families to strengthen and broaden our mission.

Earlier this year, the school contracted with the Institute for School and Parish Development (ISPD) to launch the 2022 Strategic Growth Plan. The planning process involved the entire Villa community with participation from hundreds of stakeholders—including current and past parents, grandparents, administration, board members, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the school—who participated in an initial assessment and planning sessions. The goal was to engage a broad base of connected individuals to gain insight and consider their thoughts, ideas and recommendations, to guide the Villa’s leadership for the future of the school.

The process began in January with an Initial Assessment. Initially, ISPD interviewed 31 members of the school community, reviewed materials and publications, and talked about the process. ISPD then worked with school leaders to access our present situation in several areas including: governance, finance, engagement, enrollment management, communication, development, marketing, staffing, and more.

Over 350 people responded to a survey that offered a better understanding of the school’s strengths and opportunities for growth.

Armed with all this information—the assessment, interviews, and survey results—the Steering Committee felt they were prepared for the next phase of the process where over 100 participants attended planning sessions focused on four domains: Misson and Catholic Identity, Governance and Leadership, Academic Excellence, and Operational Vitality

A Convocation was held gathering members of the Steering Committee, Planning Area Team members, and community members (who have expertise in the four domains but are not necessarily affiliated with the Villa), who developed strategic solutions for the identified challenges and opportunities that came about from the four planning sessions. Later this summer, ISPD will deliver to the Board of Trustees a final document of St. Ursula Villa's Strategic Growth Plan. This plan will provide a framework for the next six years so that we can build on our successes and face our challenges with actionable information that will support our priorities, so our students’ educational success is achieved.

Reflections from the Villa’s Academic Leadership

As we reflect on the past year, we can’t help but remember all the marvelous things we saw from our students.

The Manor House emphasizes supporting students in developing key foundational social skills, such as cooperation, responsibility, and empathy, so that we can continue to build on those skills as they advance to the next grade levels. Throughout the year, we saw many marvelous things as our youngest students put into practice what they had learned from the safe and nurturing environment created by their teachers.

We saw our students learn to give of themselves in service to others. Although they may be small acts of kindness, our Manor House students collected items in December, such as lip balm, playing cards, and crossword puzzles, and shared them with the guests of the Marielders Senior Center, accompanied by handmade cards.

Taking turns and playing nicely with others are important lessons to learn while children are young. In the spring, our students enjoyed Field Day, where they participated in fun outdoor games and activities, such as relay races, obstacle courses, and pool noodle soccer.

And we saw our students show an enthusiasm and love for learning. Students learned about the life of the butterfly and were overjoyed to watch caterpillars turn into butterflies. The students’ excitement could not be contained when it was time to finally release their butterflies outside.

In the Main School, our teachers help our students build upon the important foundational skills learned in the Manor House. This school year was filled with many marvelous moments as our elementary and junior high students developed the skills and values which will serve them well into their futures.

Faith is at the core of our values, and we saw our students grow in their faith. Students participated in Mass at least twice a month and also visited the Chapel regularly to engage in various practices of the faith, such as praying the Rosary and participating in Adoration. We saw our students share their artistic talents with our community through music and theater. Our band and guitar classes performed a fun spring concert for parents; the 4th through 6th graders performed 101 Dalmatians, Kids, and our 8th graders shined brightly in their musical, Pirates of Penzance, Jr.

Marvelous accomplishments were made by our class of 2022 as they developed into strong leaders who are prepared with the skills and knowledge to excel in high school and beyond. The marvelous trait of caring was evident when these students led the younger students on a jungle-themed walk-a-thon to Alms Park in the fall; organized service projects to benefit the homeless and the elderly; and planned and oversaw our school-wide Pink Week to benefit the Karen Wellington Foundation.

Throughout the year, within each Villa student, we see marvelous things happen every day. History confirms that Villa graduates use the lifelong skills faculty and staff at our school reinforce, encouraging them to make a difference in their community. Without doubt, we are confident the class of 2022 will do many marvelous things in the future and those younger students will follow in their footsteps.

EDUCATION

Developing the Whole Child Through Fine Arts

The arts (drawing, painting, music, choir, and drama) have always been an integral part of our curriculum. We weave the arts into our classroom curricula and teach specific artistic skills and abilities that broaden students’ learning. Teaching about visual arts, music, choir, or drama promotes student growth, increases academic achievements, and develops fine motor, decision-making, critical thinking, and visual learning skills. The arts inspire students to go beyond their comfort zone, use their creative talents, and experience the world in a different way.

Students learn to appreciate the arts early by becoming familiar with the elements and principles of art and incorporating them as they work with various media to create works of art. Students are encouraged to use freedom of expression in their projects and challenged to express their individual creativity. Our commitment to providing robust arts programming helps to promote positive development in other subjects like math, science, language arts and geography.

Music appreciation begins in the Early Childhood Program and transitions throughout our primary, intermediate, and jr. high grades. As early as 3rd grade, students can elect to take recorder training, while students in 4th through 6th grades can advance into music electives like band or choir. Expanding electives to our jr. high students, they can choose choir, band, and guitar. There are many opportunities for our students to showcase their talents to the public including the Christmas choral and band concerts; while the 8th grade students participate in the spring musical as actors, behind the scenes, or as part of the artistic design team.

Camp Villa—Enriching Students All Summer Long

Even during the summer months, St. Ursula Villa continues to nurture the whole child while fostering academic excellence.

Our camps provide academic and creative enrichment programs for students from early childhood through jr. high, helping children explore new interests and skills that complement and expand their thirst for knowledge. Each camp program offers students a chance to develop their critical thinking skills, strengthen their creative imaginations, and learn how to work collaboratively in group settings.

8 EDUCATION
Our visual arts program gives students the chance to be creative through painting, drawing, and sculpting. Students in grades 4-6 perform an impressive band concert each spring. The students in our Wearable Art Camp could become the next Versace as they show off their creative designs they made on their shirts.

Faith: Honoring and Stengthening Our Ursuline Connections

St. Ursula Villa’s commitment to our Ursuline heritage and identity is apparent through several recent initiatives to engage our community, elevate our Ursuline charism, and ensure the continued legacy of the Ursulines of Cincinnati.

St. Ursula Villa Principal Julie Scherer has joined the Ursuline Education Network as a member of their Board of Trustees. The Ursuline Education Network (UEN) promotes the preservation and development of the Ursuline charism and mission in Ursuline-sponsored schools and other educational settings, and celebrates the history, mission, and traditions of Ursuline education. In October, the UEN’s Board of Trustees will gather in Cincinnati for their fall conference. As part of this meeting, board members will visit Cincinnati-area schools in the Ursuline tradition including St. Ursula Villa. Ms. Scherer says, “I am eager to welcome Ursuline representatives and educators to our unique school to demonstrate how the Villa lives out the Characteristics of an Ursuline Education and celebrates our Ursuline heritage. Through my participation on the UEN Board of Trustees, I look forward to working closely with educators from Ursuline schools all across our country to create more opportunities for students, particularly our junior high students, to grow stronger in their faith by engaging more fully with the Ursuline charism.”

The Ursuline Education Network also organizes a biannual convocation and announces a reinvented format for the upcoming 2022 Ursuline Convocation that opens a wide horizon of possibilities and creates an inclusive, earth-friendly experience that is logistically accessible for more members of the Ursuline family. In keeping with Saint Angela’s love of pilgrimages, the 2022 Ursuline Convocation will be a virtual pilgrimage where attendees –virtual pilgrims – will explore a dynamic Virtual Oratory; share contemplative prayer; and walk, talk, and pray with Angela on six consecutive Fridays beginning September 16 and concluding with the Feast of Saint Ursula on October 21. Pilgrimage “stations” will include Angela's Italy; Brescia College in Ontario, Canada; the Navajo Nation; and end with a final celebration in Mexico. Many St. Ursula Villa faculty, administrators, and Board of Trustees members intend to join the 2022 Ursuline Convocation and the Villa will benefit from their personal and professional experiences on a virtual pilgrimage of encounter with Saint Angela Merici and her Ursuline family.

The Villa’s Ursuline identity was an important topic during St. Ursula Villa’s recent strategic planning process, with many discussions and ideas centered around how to infuse our Ursuline identity into the Villa’s school programs, curriculum, and facilities. A newly created position of Director of Mission Integration will focus on identifying, developing, and implementing ways to increase familiarity and appreciation of our school’s special Ursuline charism as well as include the previous roles of Campus Minister and Ursuline Identity Coordinator. Ms. Lisa Wolfer has enthusiastically accepted the position and shares, “I am excited to add lessons and activities to students’ classroom experiences and deepen their connection with this important aspect of our school. I also hope to incorporate the lives and teachings of Saint Angela and Saint Ursula into worship and faith formation and enrich our St. Ursula Villa community. I enjoyed working on the Strategic Growth Plan Executive Committee and look forward to continuing that work and implementing our action plans.”

St. Ursula Villa’s Board of Trustees welcomes Sr. Margie Efkeman, OSU, who brings her lifelong commitment to the Ursulines of Cincinnati and deep love for St. Ursula Villa to this important role. The Board will oversee the implementation of action plans that arose from the recent Strategic Growth Plan, using their skills and expertise to continue discussion and development through Board committee work. Sr. Margie will be a valuable member of the Ursuline Identity Committee as we explore ways to grow knowledge and appreciation of our Ursuline heritage and the characteristics of an Ursuline education shared with other schools in the Ursuline tradition.

We anticipate an exciting year of growth and development as St. Ursula Villa strengthens our Ursuline identity through these school initiatives and connections to our Ursuline heritage.

Villa Parent Organization

We are so lucky to have the involvement of all our parents here at the Villa through their engaging and enthusiastic support of the Villa Parent Organization (VPO). Through strong connections and an inclusive focus, the VPO board provides financial and volunteer opportunities that enrich our educational programing through the support of the faculty, staff, and administration.

VPO plans and executes numerous educational and social events throughout the year, such as Grandparents Day, Catholic Schools Week, Everybody Counts Week, and COSI, just to name a few. The organization also hosts Graduation and First Reconciliation receptions, manages the coordination of room parents and lunchroom duty, provides 3rd-grade recorders, and organizes the popular Halloween Trail, Elves Shelves, and May Party.

To thank our supportive administration, faculty and staff, VPO also hosts a welcome back luncheon in August, a staff appreciation soup lunch, and thank you gifts during Catholic Schools Week. Each month this past school year, room parents coordinated the celebration of every teacher’s birthday by providing desserts served in the teachers' lounges. And to demonstrate their focus on offering our teachers the tools they need to do their job, the VPO provides financial support to every teacher to meet specific classroom needs.

This long-standing support system of parents is vital to the overall vibrancy of our school. The VPO encourages all Villa parents to learn more about the various opportunities available to them. The Villa is our community; let's continue to ensure that the Villa thrives today and is sustainable for the next generation of families.

Villa Booster Organization

Playing sports teaches life lessons such as teamwork, accountability, self-confidence, responsibility, and self-discipline, while preparing students to face life's challenges and enhance their physical and mental abilities. Engaging in sports is also an excellent way for students to stay healthy and fit.

Students at St. Ursula Villa have the opportunity to participate in baseball, softball, basketball, tennis, soccer, golf, and volleyball. In addition, we offer track-and-field (in partnership with St. Gertrude), triathlon club, ski club, and Cougar football (in partnership with St. Mary and Cardinal Pacelli).

The sports program is governed by the Booster Board comprised of parents, teachers, and administrators. We are grateful for more than 80 parents, alumni, and teachers who give their time and talents each year to coach our students.

Any student in kindergarten through 8th grade who desires to participate in Booster-sponsored sports can do so without a “ pay-to-play” requirement. St. Ursula Villa Boosters’ fall fundraiser, led by the Jr. High Student Council, raises the funds required to operate the program, covering uniform, league fees, referee fees, equipment, and maintenance of our soccer fields. The Boosters also organize programs such as Eaglet soccer for our preschool/ kindergarten students and hold a variety of camps, clinics, and training sessions.

From the Board of Trustees Chair

Dear Villa Family and Friends,

This year, our school theme from Saint Angela Merici, “Without a doubt, you will see marvelous things,” not only describes some of the changes we encountered over the year, but also brings to life the marvelous opportunities of hope and growth for the school’s future.

I am excited to report on the remarkably positive and productive strategic planning process. The Villa's communitydeveloped, strategic growth plan will be completed in September 2022 and will serve as a roadmap to build on our successes so that we can advance and improve our school. I am grateful to the administration, faculty, staff, board members, parents, grandparents, alumni, and community leaders who contributed to the process. I look forward to continuing our work—Cultivating Excellence Together—as we launch the implementation phase of the strategic plan in the 2022-2023 school year.

As we look to the future, we must also reflect on the past. In doing so, I extend a sincere thank you to Kent Halaby, President of St. Ursula Villa. As we bid farewell to Kent after 14 years of dedicated service to our school, I am grateful for his contributions and leadership. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish him the best in his next chapter.

Key to the success of any organization is its leadership. The Villa is fortunate to have an engaged and visionary Board of Trustees. While all have made important contributions during their terms, we must say farewell to those leaving our team, including: Paul Frodge, Karen Janke, Jim Neyer, and Jody Sedler. They have truly given their professional advice and personal support in so many ways. Paul served as Chair of the Marketing Committee and advanced the Villa's marketing efforts through updates for our website and numerous marketing materials. Karen served as a member of the Education and Ursuline Identity Committees and led service-learning projects, including the pen pal program and annual food drives. As Chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, Jim made many contributions to the maintenance and management of our facilities. He was instrumental in developing and improving our Villa nature trails. And Jody, a former Board chair, served on the Executive Committee for the Strategic Planning process among many other contributions she made during her tenure. She now steps away from the Board to serve as the school's Interim President. We are blessed to have her institutional knowledge and professional expertise as she leads the school through this time of transition. I am deeply grateful to all our outgoing Board members for the countless hours and incredible service they have given to St. Ursula Villa.

I am pleased to welcome the following new Board members: Nadia Butcher, who brings her expertise as an architect and serves on our Building and Grounds Committee, will continue to bring new ideas to the management of our facilities and campus as a Board member; Sister Margie Efkeman, OSU, a long-time advisor and counsel to the school on the Ursuline charism and values, serves as a member of the Ursuline Committee; Julie Muething, attorney and co-chair of the 2022 Annual Fund, shares her knowledge and experience in the areas of development and governance; and David Taylor, a member of the Marketing Committee, shares his talents in marketing and communications.

A major initiative of the Board of Trustees in the coming months will be hiring the next President of St. Ursula Villa. A search committee has been formed, and efforts are underway to cultivate and identify potential candidates. The position will be posted in early October. For more information, please visit the Villa’s homepage (www.stursulavilla.org), under President Search

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, staff, and students, I thank you for sharing your gifts of time, talent, and treasure with St. Ursula Villa. When we come together as a community in service to others, we can experience “marvelous things,” and live our Villa Values to the fullest.

Sincerely,

Extending Our Thanks and Gratitude to Kent Halaby

For more than 13 years, Kent Halaby served St. Ursula Villa, holding several positions during his tenure at the school, including President, Principal, Assistant Principal, and Director of Finance and Facilities. With our school’s mission and Ursuline charism at the heart of every decision, Kent proved to be a man of impeccable character—especially during the difficult circumstance brought on by the COVID pandemic. Thanks to Kent’s tenacious leadership, the faculty, staff, and students successfully navigated the many changes in routines and policies. His dedication to return to in-person learning never superseded putting the safety and welfare of the Villa community first.

Instructional Salaries: 42.9%

Kent’s strengths as President extended well beyond crisis management. Throughout his time at the Villa, he made decisions and implemented planning efforts to improve the operational vitality of the school. In September 2021, in partnership with the Board of Trustees, Kent initiated a strategic planning process and enlisted The Institute for School and Parish Development to assist in this effort. He continued his leadership role throughout the strategic planning process, offering his expertise and institutional knowledge in the public engagement phase, Planning Area Team meetings, and the Convocation.

Kent’s leadership style extended well into the school halls and classrooms, where he valued each faculty and staff member and inspired students to dream more, learn more, and become more. He united the entire Villa community toward a common goal of achieving academic excellence and living a Christ-centered life.

The entire Villa community will miss Kent, but we wish him the very best as he takes on his new role as Pastoral Planning Support Specialist in the Catholic Schools Office of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

Continuing the Villa’s Mission Through Your Support

Our wonderfully supportive current and past parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the Villa have impacted our students, faculty, and school this past year. Your contributions have allowed us to continue our mission of providing a quality, academically challenging education to our students in the Ursuline tradition.

Because of you, we inspire students to achieve their greatest potential in a Christ-centered atmosphere. We equip our teachers with professional development opportunities that transfer to classroom instruction that creatively and positively impacts teaching and learning for our students.

This year, you accepted our invitation to support the school and helped us raise more than:

$350,478 for the Annual Fund

Your gifts were impactful, helping us close the $1,500 gap between tuition and the actual cost to educate each student. Funds raised help offset the expense of faculty professional development, classroom assistants, educational materials, and much more.

• Parent participation in the Annual Fund increased by 9% and our overall total fund goal was easily surpassed.

• Thank you to Annual Fund co-chairs Julie Muething and Peter Solimine and the 17 other Villa parents who gave their time reaching out to the Villa community, asking for their support for the campaign.

$350,000

for Villabration

The Villa’s annual gala brought parents, past parents, faculty, staff, and friends together for a fabulous evening and raised money to benefit the needs of our students, faculty, and school.

• Villabration raised 49% more than the previous year thanks to the tremendous support we received for the Special Appeal. This year’s Special Appeal will help upgrade and improve the school’s aging gymnasium.

• Thank you to Villabration co-chairs Mindy Langston-Cho and Chang Cho and Shasta and George Haddad, event sponsors, Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, parents, and businesses that donated hundreds of items for the live and silent auctions.

We invite you to join our Saint Angela Merici Society with a leadership gift to help ensure the success of each St. Ursula Villa student.

PLANNED GIVING

Those who include St. Ursula Villa in their estate planning are a group of like-minded, visionary leaders passionate about making the school stronger and more resilient for years to come.

Areas of Planned Giving

• Life Insurance

• Bequests

• IRA/Pension Funds

• Personal Property

• Appreciated Securities

Caring for, developing, and enhancing the lives of the future generation of leaders, makes giving to the Villa the best long-term investment anyone could ever make.

Your generosity makes our mission possible. Thank you!

For more information about supporting the school, please contact Julie Althaver, Director of Development, at j.althaver@stursulavilla.org or 513-533-7374.

MAJOR BENEFACTOR $5,000 and above LEADERSHIP $2,500 to $4,999 HONOR $1,000 to $2,499
Villa students enjoy the annual Walk-a-Thon. Saint Angela Merici Society Giving Circles

A “ Full Court Press” Night at Villabration 2022

The grounds of St. Ursula Villa were electrified on Saturday, March 26, as more than 250 people attended Villabration Slam Dunk and raised $350,000 for the school.

Beginning 46 years ago as the Western Auction, this year’s event welcomed Honorary Co-Chair couples Mindy Langston-Cho and Chang Cho and Shasta and George Haddad, all of whom have been fixtures at St. Ursula Villa for over a decade, volunteering their time and talents for the school and many VPO and Booster functions.

"We continue to be amazed and extremely grateful for the generous support we receive for this event," said Kristy Thomas, St. Ursula Villa Event Coordinator.

"This year, we set an ambitious goal, but our Villa community, once again, rose to the challenge and helped us surpass the goal through their sponsorships, donations of live and silent auction items, giving to the Special Appeal, and attendance at the event. Because of their continued support, Villabration proved to be a slam dunk."

Villabration's Special Appeal raised a record-breaking $170,635. Money raised for the Special Appeal will go toward making improvements to the gym in honor of gym teacher, Beth Hake, who retired after 37 years of dedicated service to the school. The planned improvements to the gym, built in 1999, include lighting upgrades, new retractable side backboards (and upgrades to the main backboards), bleacher improvements, floor refinishing, and a sound system.

2121 ANNUAL REPORT

St. Ursula Villa Bids Farewell to Four Retirees

“Without doubt, you will see marvelous things” … we couldn’t fulfill that call to action without the selfless work of our teachers who have dedicated their time to the Villa. Thank you.

She’s an icon, a legend, and will be missed by the students she taught, the faculty who worked with her, and the families who grew to love her—Beth Hake

For 37 years, Beth taught physical education to preschool through 8th-grade. She brought energy and creative activities for our students, including the art of juggling, line dancing, shooting hoops, the mile run, Tinikling, and the “ Riley Mack Throw Championship.”

Beth started a number of time-honored traditions that our students always looked forward to such as the Polar Express and Field Day “ I loved planning these days and seeing the children’s excitement when they entered the gym,” said Beth.

Beth’s teaching style focused on the Villa Values including instructing the students to treat others with respect, show school pride, strive to be their best, and always care for those around them with a smile. Teamwork and camaraderie were two traits she instilled in her students through her lessons. Besides the activities she planned for her students, Beth also played an important role as a coach for girls’ softball and volleyball teams and the chess club.

Before leaving the Villa, Beth shared with us some parting thoughts, “ Teaching at the Villa was never a job. I had too much fun. I enjoyed watching the students’ reactions to their achievements and failures, teaching a child from their preschool days to 8th grade, and being around long enough to teach former students’ children. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to teach your children, as they taught me too!”

For more than 16 years, Debbie Ellis called the Villa “home”. For the first eight years, she was a substitute teacher for various grades, then spent another eight years as an Instructional Assistant in the traditional preschool three-year-old program helping Nichole Rouse. “ It has been an honor to have worked with the children over the years, and I will carry each of them in my heart forever,” says Debbie.

Debbie considers the teachers and staff at the Villa a part of her family, and she will miss seeing them daily. Although Debbie is retiring as an Instructional Assistant, she plans to keep connected to her Villa family by substituting at the school when the occasion arises.

Gayle Schwartz started her career at the Villa in 2000, working with Nicole Schmidt in the Montessori classroom, and later joined Rebecca Morena for the remainder of her time at the Villa. “ I loved working with three- through six-year-olds,” says Gayle. “ Watching them grow and learn over three years has been a rewarding experience, and I will miss seeing their faces. The staff at the Manor House have truly been my school family, including the wonderful staff in the Main School.”

While she will miss her daily interaction with Rebecca and the students, Gayle looks forward to spending time with her eight grandchildren, gardening, traveling, and counting her blessings. Gayle wishes to thank the wonderful parents, co-workers, and children who have always been so loving and gracious to her.

22 FACULTY NOTES

(Retirees cont. from page 22)

A hard worker, full of life, and someone who has a "bubbly" personality, are words our faculty uses when describing Ginny Verdin

Ginny, a Villa student for grades 2-8 and a former teacher, returned to the school in 2014 to be an Instructional Assistant for Holly Heekin’s 1st grade classroom. The following year, she assisted Diane Horst in her classroom before returning to Holly's classroom for the next seven years. “ I loved coming to the Villa to work,” said Ginny. “ It was a bit like coming home.” And, if you ask Holly about Ginny’s contributions in the classroom, Holly is eager to tell you that Ginny truly loved the children and treated them with such kindness and care.

Outside of the classroom, Ginny loved working the car line. “ It was amazing seeing past, present, and future students every morning,” says Ginny.

Deciding to retire wasn’t an easy decision for Ginny, but she thought it was best so she could spend more time with her aging parents and have more time to travel.

Faculty and Staff Celebrate Milestones

St. Ursula Villa honors ten faculty and staff members who achieved “Milestones of Service” to the school.

The Villa Community Remembers a Dedicated Teacher

For more than two decades, Ruth Nelson Hilmer spent time at the Villa in Auxiliary Services helping countless students with reading, writing, and organization skills.

Although Ruth passed away last year, we will always remember her for her ever-present smile, great attitude, genuine kindness and caring that she effortlessly shared to both the students and faculty.
