In this symbol, we see a monstrous green dragon arising out of the sea. It is fierce and ugly, and is most definitely posing a threat to the city. They represent the same deity, and his name is Satan. Of course, this is the same definition the Bible gives the dragon and the serpent. With this concept in mind, let us look at a particularly powerful traditional Satanic image, the Basilisk Serpent. This coiled serpent is colored a bright green, the same green as this Marine Corps dragon. He is crowned and is pictured as devouring a human being! Yet, New World Order writings say that, when Antichrist arises, the entire world will be organized into a planetary Worldwide Initiation in order to place all mankind into subservience to Antichrist.

It is likely that it is at this time that the False Prophet forces everyone to take the Mark of the Beast as a symbol of commitment to Antichrist. Thus, perhaps this green dragon is meant to symbolize that, one day soon, the entire world will be forced into a Worldwide Initiation, with the World Trade Center being the first step in this direction!

3. Our Masonic forefathers used to meet in one of their favorite watering holes, a tavern called the "Green Dragon", located on 11th Street in Boston! The parallel in this historic fact to the tragedy at the World Trade Center is so heavy it almost staggers the imagination! In considering the symbolism of this U.S. Marine Corps logo, one has to ask the obvious question: is this green dragon the evil the Marine Corps is fighting against? In this image, you see U.S. Marines going ashore a short distance away from a large metropolitan city that is located on the ocean. You see the one representative Marine ashore, looking at something through binoculars. Behind him is a bombsniffing dog, and in the background are other Marines coming ashore. We see a barge about to disembark on the shore, and other barges, supposedly filled with supplies. In the air, we see a helicopter, a couple of fighter planes, and an aircraft that looks like an Osprey. All the aircraft are headed to the left of the image, in the same direction as the Marine is looking through his binoculars! Masons claim that their organization finds its roots with the builders of King Solomon's temple, but others trace its origin to the Ancient Pagan Mysteries. According to Pike's Morals and Dogma, Buddha was a Mason some one thousand years before Christ. The first Grand Lodge was founded in London in 1717.

Masons claim that their "fraternity" is not a religion, but over and over again we find religious elements in their practices. (See I Peter 2:4-8) Regardless of their claims, the Masons are clearly embedded in a mystical religious system of salvation through works. Any "God" will do in this religion, because the Lodge teaches that it isn't God who saves one's soul anyhow: it's one's good works. In fact, in nations where Christianity isn't embraced, Masonic alters display the appropriate "Book of the Law" instead of the Bible. Freemasonry is definitely a religion, and a very BAD one at that.

The entry level in Masonry is The Blue Lodge, which consists of three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. One may stop at the level of Master Mason, or he can choose to enter either the Scottish Rite or the York Rite. The Scottish Rite advances by numerical degrees, the highest being the 33rdhonorary degree. The York Rite advances

by Chapter, Council, and Commandery degrees, with the highest level being The Order of the Knights Templar Commandery.

The Masons speak much about approaching "the light," yet their whole organization is shrouded in secretive practices and blood curdling oaths which should deter any true Christian. In clear violation of the words of the Lord Jesus Christ (Mat. 5:33-37), an Entered Apprentice Mason SWEARS BY GOD to: "...always hail, ever conceal, and never reveal, any of the arts, parts, or points of the hidden mysteries of Ancient Free masonry...binding myself under no less penalty than that of having my throat cut across, my tongue torn out by its roots, and my body buried in the rough sands of the sea..." Thank God this is an entry level oath, for it has no doubt turned away many God-fearing Christian men!

The deep secrets of Masonry are just as unscriptural. It is falsehood and wickedness that dwell in dark secret corners . Truth is worthy of propagation (Mat. 28:18-19). Jesus Himself said, "...I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing." (John 18:20) In the initiation of an Entered Apprentice, the "Worshipful Master" (Mat. 23:10) asks: "In your present condition, what do you most desire?" The candidate responds: "Light." The "Master" later informs the candidate that he is "yet in darkness." Then for the Second Degree (Fellow Craft) the candidate is required to ask for "more light." According to God's word, Jesus Christ is the LIGHT (John 1:9; 8:12) and God's word is LIGHT (Psa. 119:105, 130). If you are saved, then it is an outright BLASPHEMY for you to agree that you are "yet in darkness" and to ask for "more light." Please note: "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." Now the member is ready to climb the ladder of the Lodge and encounter some of the most ungodly practices known to man.

For example, let's consider the Knights Templar initiation. The following is taken from pages 67-68 of the book, Masonry: Beyond The Light, by former Mason, William Schnoebelen: "The high point of the KT initiation is when the candidate is brought before a large, triangular table covered in black velvet illuminated by candles and containing eleven silver goblets and a human skull enthroned on the Bible. (Skulls figure prominently throughout this initiation.)"

"This is intended to be the Last Supper. It seems but a grim mockery, though. The visual effect is more satanic than Christian, especially to one accustomed to the Table of the Lord in churches. However, the ambiance is the least of the problems."

"The candidate is asked to partake of five libations, (toasts). The first three libations are given, respectively, to the memory of Masonic heros King Solomon, Hiram, King of Tyre, and Hiram Abif. The fourth libation is to the memory of Simon of Cyrene, and the fifth is the most sinister of all." "The candidate is never told to whom the fifth libation is drunk (it is "sealed"), and it is offered to him in a human skull!..."

After the toast in this ritual, the candidate is required to take an oath which makes him the sin-bearer of his own sins and the sins of the person from whom the skull was taken. Friend, does this sound like something that a Christian man should do?!

html Mysteries abound about World Trade Center 7's (WTC-7) demise on September 11. In the early evening in the Big Apple of that horrific day this 47-story steel building suddenly collapsed. An odd series of failures had occurred.

They began when a small amount of debris falls from the implosion of World Trade Center 1, a block away. Somehow small fires subsequently break out in WTC-7. The fireproofing systems completely fail. The fires burn all day from an unknown fuel. Eventually, the flames reach tanks of diesel fuel at ground level.

Suddenly, the penthouse begins to fall. The entire lower levels immediately experience the same massive failures. About seven seconds later the entire building is gone. It takes a minute for 2 million square feet of office space to become a large pile of rubble.

Satellite photos later confirm that the vast majority of WTC-7's rubble rests in what was the building’s footprint. The neatness of the rubble enables clean-up crews to swiftly remove and recycle the steel after just a cursory examination (See Eric Hufschmid at http://www.erichufschmid.net/PainfulQuestions_1.pdf) World Trade Center 7 (WTC-7) was built in 1985. It was located across Vesey Street from the main World Trade Center compound. It was a largelyconventional steel building which had forty-four floors. Somewhat dark and sleek, it was designed by Emery Roth & Sons. It collapsed at 5:20 p.m. on September 11, 2001. Fortunately, WTC-7 had been evacuated and no one is known to have been killed by its demise.

It fell about seven hours after the strange collapses of the North and South Twin Towers. (WTC-2, the South tower, collapsed around 10:00 a.m. WTC-1, the North, came down about a half hour later.) The unknown quantity of debris from WTC-1 is said to have caused fires in WTC-7 that prevailed on the 11th floor.

Sherlock Holmes once remarks how odd it is that a guard dog did not bark at a midnight intruder. Apparently, the WTC-7 fires were not photogenic. Indeed, when viewing the extant documentation there are only small fires that are localized within the offices of the Securites Exchange Commission (SEC). Ironically, never before 9/11/01 in history has a steel building even partially collapsed from a fire.

Neither has any since.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (“World Trade Center Building Performance Study”, document number 403, May, 2002) , 36,000 gallons of diesel fuel was stored in diesel tanks just above and at ground level. The fuel, stored in fire-resistant containers, was there to run backup generators. However, the report never says for sure whether any burned. It also fails to confirm that burning diesel was the source of the building’s collapse. The report even ignores the biggest mystery of all. How this building could have fallen in its own footprint rather unlike what is expected from the Leaning Tower of Pisa is not discussed.

FEMA’s report is filled with rampant speculation and hypothetical scenarios.

Throughout it are weasel-words such as “appears” and “apparently”. The tone is set in the first paragraph. It says that the “performance of” World Trade Center 7’s collapse is “of significant interest because it appears the collapse was due primarily to fire, rather than any impact damage from the collapsing [Twin] towers.” Overall, very little of this report is stated with conviction.

FEMA's nonchalance about WTC-7’s collapse is stunning. Structural failures of this magnitude do not normally take place. In addition, there was high-profile, large-budget government agencies leasing office space in WTC-7 that day.

Besides the SEC, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Department of Defense (DOD), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and New York’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) were all tenants. None of the current heads of these departments have been vocal in demanding to know why this building collapsed. In addition, while some details have been released, a full accounting of what data these agencies lost has not been prominently reported.

Another source of curiosity is what the NYC Office of Emergency Management (OEM) was doing prior to 9/11/01. We know that the OEM took up the entire 23rd floor, serving as some sort of command center for then-Mayor Guiliani.

activities at that time remain a source of widespread speculation.

With the two-year anniversary of the destruction of the World Trade Center arriving, the subject of WTC-7's odd disintegration is due some scrutiny by the liberal US media. To name just one, does Z Magazine believe that we now live in an era when tall steel buildings can collapse in large cities without any significant discussion of why? Even George Orwell might have trouble imagining that scenario.

Adam Weishaupt Adam Weishaupt founded the Illuminati of Bavaria on May 1, 1776 on the principles of his early training as a Jesuit. Originally called the Order of the Perfectibilists, "its professed object was, by the mutual assistance of its members, to attain the highest possible degree of morality and virtue, and to lay the foundation for the reformation of the world by the association of good men to oppose the progress of moral evil."(1) Adam Weishaupt was born February 6, 1748 at Ingoldstadt and educated by the Jesuits. His appointment as Professor of Natural and Canon Law at the University of Ingoldstadt in 1775, a position previously held by an ecclesiastic, gave great offense to the clergy. "Weishaupt, whose views were cosmopolitan, and who knew and condemned the bigotry and superstitions of the Priests, established an opposing party in the University.... Status as a Mason was not required for initiation into the Order of Illuminati since the fourth, fifth and sixth degrees of Weishaupt and Baron Von Knigge's system practically duplicated the three degrees of symbolic Freemasonry. Although Knigge claimed to have a system of ten degrees, the last two appear never to have been fully worked up.(3) "The Order was at first very popular, and enrolled no less than two thousand names upon its registers.... Its Lodges were to be found in France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, and Italy. Knigge, who was one of its most prominent working members, and the author of several of its Degrees, was a religious man, and would never have united with it had its object been, as has been charged, to abolish Christianity. But it cannot be denied, that in the process of time abuses had crept into the Institution and that by the influence of unworthy men, the system became corrupted; yet the course accusations of Barruel and Robison are known to be exaggerated, and some of them altogether false.... The Edicts (on June 22, 1784, for its suppression) of the Elector of Bavaria were repeated in March and August, 1785 and the Order began to decline, so that by the end of the eighteenth century it had ceased to exist.... it exercised while in prosperity no favorable influence on the Masonic Institution, nor any unfavorable effect on it by its dissolution."(4) In the following year, 1785, Weishaupt was deprived of his professorship and banished from the country. He moved to Gotha where he died in 1811.

The Encyclopedia Britannica refers to the Illuminati "cells" in an article on eighteenth century Italy as "republican freethinkers, after the pattern recently established in Bavaria by Adam Weishaupt."(5) and as a "rationalistic secret society" in an article on Roman Catholicism.(6). Depending on your perspective, the lack of any information on the Illuminati in the Encyclop他dia Britannica can be ascribed to their current power and secretiveness or to the much simpler explanation that the editors found the order to be of little importance in the flow of history and social development.

John M. Roberts claims that "The Illuminati were the first society to use for political subversion the machinery of secret organization offered by free masonry ... through the craft they began to spread."(7) while Robert Gilbert feels that Christopher McIntosh "overestimates the strength and significance of the Illuminati."(8) Documented evidence would suggest that the Bavarian Illuminati was nothing more than a curious historical footnote. Introductory remarks. THIS DOCUMENT was originally written by Pike to demonstrate the unimpeachable authenticity of the Constitutions of 1786, signed by Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. This was due to the competition that existed between the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite (AASR) and the Cerneau Rite. The Cerneauists claim that the Patents granted to Stephen Morin were bogus, while the AASR held that the Patents granted to Cerneau were bogus. There is some reason to hold that both sides of the argument were equally in the right, and equally in the wrong. At any rate, our reason for including the following material has less to do with the story of the Cerneauists versus the AASR. We are including a rather interesting narrative penned by Albert Pike concerning the history of the Order of the Illuminati, containing material that is generally not available.

Most of what is usually available is written to depict Adam Weishaupt as an evil genius, scheming to take over the world. The present material being offered paints quite a different picture. It shows that a check against the Jesuits was a necessary thing, then as well as now.

From the time of Ramsay's Oration, described elsewhere at this site, the Catholic Church had been excommunicating Freemasons, and had been instrumental in infiltrating Lodges with the sole object of neutralizing them.

While Weishaupt's plans were similar, at least in practice -- at least in intention they were for the benefit of the Order as a whole. Unfortunately, when Zwack's papers were discovered, the whole thing was let out of the bag, as it were, and a new strategy was required. The general story is that from the breakup of the original Order, it went into the Tugendbund, and then into a long string of "Friends" and "Literary" Societies, up to and including those which were responsible for the propagation of the Communism of Marx and Engels. There is some reason to hold that other branches of the original Order perpetuated themselves in the various branches of the R+C Order.

These included the later versions of the Gold Rosicrucians, namely, the Order of Perfect Initiates of Asia, or the Asiatic Brethren, the Order of Saint Joachim (St. Jonathan), the various Orders of Light, and these would also eventually come to include their 19th Century survivors. Some have said that there is no historical continuity between the original Order of the Illuminati and the revived Orders created

by Theodor Reuss and by Leopold Engel. Maybe, but we can see that there is some reason to hold that such a continuity existed in Europe, and, perhaps, too, in America.

Who was Adam Weishaupt? A Revolutionary, certainly. A Natural Philospher, like Rousseau, Jefferson, and Franklin. A Mystic? Perhaps not. However, the influence he had on modern society is one which cannot be easily dismissed. Unfortunately, the people usually writing about him are from the camp of the enemy, always finding dark conspiracies, wherever any honest Bearer of Light and Liberty has come up against the Church. We hope to expand on the biography of this interesting character and the influence he had, in future installments.

It is worth noticing, too, on 01 May, in 1776 e.v., we get the foundation of the Bavarian Illuminati. Ten years later, we get the (alleged) Constitutions of 1786, signed and ratified by Frederic the Great. Both characters are covered in the following extracts by Albert Pike.

Furthermore, it is possible that the latter Baader was inspired by the work of Kleuker, who may have been taught by Ferdinand v. Baader. Franz Xaver von Baader would have an influence upon another important individual, Franz Joseph Molitor, one of the Asiatic Brethren.

Another area of influence upon the life and thought of Weishaupt, according to an article that was handed to us last year (2001 c.e.) is that of the Frankist / Shabbetean tradition. We can see where some similarities exist, particularly the concept of religious dissimulation. It is said by the author of the article that Weishaupt and his family even were secret Frankists. Maybe, but we don't possess any documentation on the subject.

Finally, we see that Moses Dobruschka was possibly affiliated with the Illuminati, possibly after he assisted in the establishment of the Initiated Brethren of Asia. A gig with the Illuminati would have paved the way for his future and final career move as a Jacobin propagandist.

A number of conspiracy theories have arisen alleging that Skull & Bones is an offshoot of an old Bavarian secret society called the Illuminati and that some of its members are actively involved in a plot to control world events. Weather Warfare A New World Order weapon could trigger climate change MICHEL CHOSSUDOVSKY The important debate on global warming proceeding under UN auspices provides but a partial picture of climate change. In addition to the devastating impacts of greenhouse gas emissions on the ozone layer, the world's climate can now be modified by a new generation of sophisticated "non-lethal weapons." In fact, both the US and Russia have developed capabilities to manipulate the world's weather.

In the US, the technology is being perfected under the High-frequency Active Aural Research Program (HAARP) as part of "Star Wars," otherwise known as the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). Recent scientific evidence suggests that HAARP is fully operational and has the ability to potentially trigger floods, droughts, hurricanes, and earthquakes.

While there is no evidence that this deadly technology has been used yet, surely the UN should be addressing the issue of "environmental warfare" alongside the debate on the climatic impacts of greenhouse gases. From a military standpoint, HAARP is a weapon of mass destruction.

Potentially, it constitutes an instrument of conquest capable of selectively destabilizing the agricultural and ecological systems of entire regions.

Owning the Weather Despite a vast body of scientific knowledge, the issue of deliberate climatic manipulations for military use has never been explicitly part of the UN agenda on climate change. Conference on Climate Change (CO6) raised the broad issue of "weather warfare" or "environmental modification techniques" (ENMOD) as relevant to an understanding of climate change.

The clash between official negotiators, environmentalists, and US business lobbies has centered on Washington's outright refusal to abide by commitments on carbon dioxide reduction targets under the 1997 Kyoto protocol. The protocol calls for nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5.2 percent to become effective between 2008 and 2012. (For details, go to www. globalwarming.net/gw11.html.) Yet, the impacts of military technologies on the world's climate aren't an object of discussion or concern. Narrowly confined to greenhouse gases, the ongoing debate on climate change serves Washington's strategic and defense objectives.

World-renowned scientist Dr. Rosalie Bertell confirms that "US military scientists are working on weather systems as a potential weapon." As The Times of London reported on November 23, 2000, "The methods include the enhancing of storms and the diverting of vapor rivers in the Earth's atmosphere to produce targeted droughts or floods."

In the 1970s, former national security advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski predicted in his book Between Two Ages, "Technology will make available, to the leaders of major nations, techniques for conducting secret warfare, of which only a bare minimum of the security forces need be appraised ... . Techniques of weather modification could be employed to produce prolonged periods of drought or storm."

Marc Filterman, a former French military officer, has outlined several types of "unconventional weapons" using radio frequencies. According to a 1999 report in Intelligence Newsletter, he refers directly to "weather war," indicating that the US and the Soviet Union had already "mastered the know-how needed to unleash sudden climate changes (hurricanes, drought) in the early 1980s."

These technologies make it "possible to trigger atmospheric disturbances by using Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) radar."

A simulation study of future defense "scenarios," described in a report by the Air University of the US Air Force, calls for "US aerospace forces to Ôown the weather' by capitalizing on emerging technologies and focusing development of those technologies to war-fighting applications. From enhancing friendly operations or disrupting those of the enemy via small-scale tailoring of natural weather patterns to complete dominance of global communications and counterspace control, weather-modification offers the war fighter a wide range of possible options to defeat or coerce an adversary. In the US, weather modification will likely become a part of national security policy with both domestic and international applications. Our government will pursue such a policy, depending on its interests, at various levels."

by the Air Force Research Laboratory's Space Vehicles Directorate, it constitutes a system of powerful antennas capable of creating "controlled local modifications of the ionosphere."

In The Military's Pandora's Box, Dr. Nicholas Begich, a scientist actively involved in the campaign against HAARP, describes it as "a super-powerful radiowave-beaming technology that lifts areas of the ionosphere (upper layer of the atmosphere) by focusing a beam and heating those areas.

Electromagnetic waves then bounce back onto earth and penetrate everything - living and dead."

Bertell depicts HAARP as "a gigantic heater that can cause major disruption in the ionosphere, creating not just holes, but long incisions in the protective layer that keeps deadly radiation from bombarding the planet."

Although presented as a program of scientific and academic research, Begich notes that US military documents suggest HAARP's main objective is to "exploit the ionosphere for Department of Defense purposes." Without explicitly referring to the program, the Air University study points to the use of "induced ionospheric modifications" as a means of altering weather patterns as well as disrupting enemy communications and radar.

According to Bertell, HAARP is part of an integrated weapons system with potentially devastating environmental consequences. "It is related to fifty years of intensive and increasingly destructive programs to understand and control the upper atmosphere," she notes. "It would be rash not to associate HAARP with the space laboratory construction, which is separately being planned by the United States. HAARP is an integral part of a long history of space research and development of a deliberate military nature."

The military implications of combining these projects are alarming. The ability of the HAARP/ Spacelab/rocket combination to deliver very large amounts of energy, comparable to a nuclear bomb, anywhere on earth via laser and particle beams, is frightening. The project, adds Bertell, is likely to be "sold" to the public as a space shield against incoming weapons, or, for the more gullible, a device for repairing the ozone layer.

In addition to weather manipulation, HAARP has a number of related uses. According to Begich, "HAARP could contribute to climate change by intensively bombarding the atmosphere with highfrequency rays. Returning low-frequency waves at high intensity could also affect people's brains, and effects on tectonic movements cannot be ruled out."

More generally, it has the ability to modify the world's electro-magnetic field. As Don Herskovitz explained in the August 1993 issue of the Journal of Electronic Defense, it's part of an arsenal of "electronic weapons" which US military researchers consider a "gentler and kinder warfare."

According to Herskovitz, "electronic warfare" is defined by the US Department of Defense as "military action involving the use of electromagnetic energy."

Avoiding the Issues According to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) signed at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, "States have, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of international law, the responsibility to ensure that activities within their jurisdiction or control do not cause damage to the environment of other States or of areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction." In addition, an international convention ratified by the UN General Assembly in 1977 bans "military or other hostile use of environmental modification techniques having widespread, long-lasting or severe effects."

Both the US and the Soviet Union were signatories to the convention, which defines "environmental modification techniques" as referring to any technique for changing - through the deliberate manipulation of natural processes - "the dynamics, composition or structure of the earth, including its biota, lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere or of outer space." Yet, the UN, disregarding the 1977 environmental modification convention as well as its own charter, has decided to exclude climatic changes resulting from military programs from its agenda.

Responding to a report of Maj Britt Theorin, Swedish member of the European Parliament and a longtime peace advocate, the parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, Security and Defense Policy held public hearings on the HAARP program in February 1998. The committee's subsequent Motion for Resolution, submitted in January 1999, "considers HAARP by virtue of its far-reaching impact on the environment to be a global concern and calls for its legal, ecological and ethical implications to be examined by an international independent body; [the Committee] regrets the repeated refusal of the United States Administration to give evidence to the public hearing into the environmental and public risks [of] the HAARP program."

The committee's request to draw up a "Green Paper" on "the environmental impacts of military activities," however, was casually dismissed on the grounds that the European Commission lacks the required jurisdiction to delve into "the links between environment and defense." In short, Brussels was anxious to avoid a showdown with Washington.

Fully operational HAARP is part of the weapons arsenal of the New World Order under SDI. From military command points in the US, entire national economies could potentially be destabilized through climatic manipulations. More important, the latter can be implemented without the knowledge of the enemy, at minimal cost, and without engaging military personnel and equipment as in a conventional war.

To advance US economic and strategic interests, for example, it could be used to selectively modify climate in different parts of the world, resulting in the destabilization of agricultural and ecological systems. While there's no concrete evidence that HAARP has been used, scientific findings suggest that it's fully operational. If so, it could potentially be applied by the US military to selectively modify the climate of an "unfriendly nation" or "rogue state" with a view to destabilizing its national economy.

Agricultural systems in both developed and developing countries are already in crisis as a result of New World Order policies such as market deregulation and commodity dumping. Amply documented, IMF and World Bank "economic medicine" imposed on the Third World and the countries of the former Soviet bloc has largely contributed to the destabilization of domestic agriculture. In turn, the provisions of the World Trade Organization have supported the interests of a handful of Western agri-biotech conglomerates in their quest to impose genetically modified seeds on farmers throughout the world.

In that context, climatic manipulations under the HAARP program (whether accidental or deliberate) would inevitably exacerbate these changes by weakening national economies, destroying infrastructure, and potentially triggering the bankruptcy of farmers over vast areas.

Surely, national governments and the UN should address the possible consequences of this and other "non-lethal weapons" on climate change.

Seven signers of the Declaration of Independence are known to have been Freemasons. Probably there were more, but in those days lodge records were not so carefully kept as now, and research by competent Masonic scholars has failed to produce adequate evidence to support the claim, sometimes advanced, that a majority of the Continental Congress of 1776 were members of the Craft. Yet we know that the great leaders of the Revolution, civil and military, were Freemasons, and many were as prominent in the fraternity as they were in affairs of the new nation.

When Benjamin Franklin helped draft the Declaration of Independence, he was Past Grand Master of the Pennsylvania Freemasons. He was a deep student of Masonic philosophy, and had delved into its historic sources.

Although he parodied astrological charlatans in Poor Richard's Almanac, he, like Thomas Jefferson, knew and practiced genuine astrology. He had, also, great skill in the construction of magic squares, and in his day almost the only sources of information concerning these mathematical curiosities were the books of such writers on the occult arts as Henry Cornelius Agrippa and the Qabalists. All his life he was very active in the Craft. While at Paris he served with distinction as Master of the Lodge of the Nine Muses. At that time he may well have become acquainted with those two Masonic adepts, St. Germain and and maligned Cagliostro.

George Washington was a Mason, and so were twelve of his generals: Greene, Marion, Lee, Sullivan, R. and I. Putnam, Edwards, Jackson, Girt, Baron Steuben, Baron De Kalb, and Lafayette. When Washington took office as President, he was sworn in by a Past Grand Master of New York.

The Jacobin Clubs in France were the aristocratic terrorists who spearheaded the French Revolution, which sent King Louis XVI, on January 21st, 1793, to the guillotine. It was the Jacobin Clubs that actually abolished Christianity through the National Assembly, and established the worship of the goddess of Reason, or Liberty.

The name "Jacobin" derived from the name of the convent these aristocratic terrorists used to secretly plot the overthrow of King Louis XVI. The convent was called Jacobin Dominican Convent.-Encyclopedia Americana, vol.15.p.657. They were also known as the society of the Friends of the Constitution, and were soon organized in every important town in France. They were the most wealthy and influential people in France. used as a pretext to crush that organization.[THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD] In retrospect, it is clear that Nasser was the reluctant champion of the Arab struggle against Israel.

Domestic development was his priority. A dangerous pattern of violent interactions, however, was evolving that would eventually draw the Egyptians into conflict with Israel. Small groups of Palestinian raiders, including some operating from Egyptian-controlled Gaza, were infiltrating Israel's borders. In October 1953 the Israeli government initiated the policy of large-scale retaliation that it pursued thereafter.

One

such strike--an attack on Gaza in February 1955 that left 38 Egyptians dead--exposed the military weakness of the FREE OFFICER REGIME. In September 1955 Nasser announced that an arms agreement had been signed between Egypt and Czechoslovakia (acting for the Soviet Union). The way to improved Soviet-Egyptian relations had been prepared by Nasser's refusal to join the Baghdad Pact (the Middle East Treaty Organization, later known as the Central Treaty Organization), which had been formed earlier that year by Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom, with the support of the United States, to counter the threat of Soviet expansion. With the arms agreement of 1955, the Soviet Union eluded efforts to contain its actions and established itself as a force in the Middle East.

The erosion of Nasser's initially pro-Western orientation was accelerated further by the denial of funds previously promised by the United States and Britain for the construction of a high dam at Aswan.

Defiantly, Nasser announced the nationalization of the Suez Canal Company in 1956 to finance the dam. In its subsequent attack on Egypt in October 1956, Israel was joined by the British, who were enraged by the nationalization, and the French, who were angered by Egyptian aid to the revolt in Algeria. Pressure on the invading powers by the United States and the Soviet Union, however, soon ended the so-called Suez War, leaving Nasser triumphant (despite his military losses) and with the Suez Canal firmly in Egyptian hands.

Nasser, who had been elected president in June 1956, pursued a more radical line in the decade following the Suez War. He launched an ambitious program of domestic transformation, a revolution from above that was paralleled by a drive for Egyptian leadership in the Arab world. Early in 1958 Egypt combined with Syria to form the United Arab Republic (U.A.R.), but it was a reluctant marriage of convenience and was dissolved in bitterness in September 1961 (Egypt retained the name United Arab Republic until 1971).

The secession of Syria was blamed by Nasser on Syrian "reactionaries," and in direct response he pushed the revolution in Egypt further to the left. The following spring a National Charter proclaimed that Egypt's

Impressive domestic gains were registered. In 1950 industry contributed 10 percent to the total national output; by 1970 that figure had increased to 21 percent. Unfortunately, these achievements in industry were not matched in agriculture, and they were further undercut by rapid population growth.

Throughout this period the potential military danger from Israel was a constant factor in the calculations of the U.A.R. government. It was a motive in strengthening ties with the Soviet bloc and producing a series of initiatives for cooperation among the Arab states, which, however, were disappointing. Nasser masked essential Egyptian moderation on the Israeli issue with a militant rhetoric of confrontation that was necessary to preserve his standing in the Arab world.

The failure of the union with Syria had been a blow to Nasser's pan-Arab standing. To regain the initiative, Nasser intervened in 1962-67 on the republican side of the Yemeni civil war. That intervention provoked conflict with Saudi Arabia, which supported the Yemeni royalists, and with the United States, which in turn supported the Saudis. Until then, Nasser had managed to obtain impressive aid from both the Soviet Union and the United States. Because of Egyptian intervention in the Yemen, U.S. aid was cut off in the mid-1960s.

This series of reversals was one key factor in the mood of desperation that pushed Nasser to abandon his policy of "militant inaction" toward Israel. For 10 years relative peace on the border with Israel was precariously maintained by the presence of a UN Emergency Force (UNEF) stationed on the Egyptian side.

In the Arab summit conferences of the early 1960s Nasser had counseled restraint, but in 1966 events eluded his control. Palestinian incursions against Israel were launched with greater frequency and intensity from bases in Jordan, Lebanon, and, especially, Syria. A radical Syrian regime openly pledged support to the Palestinian guerrilla raids. On Nov. 13, 1966, an Israeli strike into Jordan left 18 dead and 54 wounded.

Taunted openly for hiding behind the UNEF, Nasser was forced to act. The Egyptian president requested the withdrawal of the UNEF from the Sinai border. But that would include, as the United Nations interpreted the order, the removal of UN troops stationed at Sharm ash-Shaykh at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba. The posting of Egyptian troops there would mean the closing of the gulf to the Israelis.

Israel had made it clear that the closing of the gulf would be a cause for war. On June 5, 1967, Israel launched a preemptive attack on Egypt and Jordan later known as the June (or Six-Day) War. All of Egypt's airfields were struck, and the bulk of Egyptian planes were demolished on the ground. In the Sinai, Egyptian forces were defeated and put to flight. An estimated 10,000 Egyptians died. The Israelis reached the Suez Canal on June 9. Egypt was crushed and Nasser resigned. A popular outpouring of support, only partially manipulated by the government, refused the President's resignation. But the Nasser era was, in fact, over. In both domestic and foreign affairs, Nasser began a turn to the right that his successor, Anwar el-Sadat, was to accelerate sharply.

Nasser died on Sept. 28, 1970, and was succeeded by his vice president,

Sadat, himself a

FREE OFFICER. Although regarded at the time as an interim figure, Sadat soon revealed unexpected gifts for political survival.

In May 1971 he outmaneuvered a formidable combination of rivals for power, calling his victory the "Corrective Revolution." Sadat then used his strengthened position to manage a war with Israel in October 1973, thereby setting the stage for a new era in Egypt's history.

The Sadat era really began with the October (or Yom Kippur) War of 1973. The concerted SyrianEgyptian surprise attack on October 6 surprised not only Israel but also the world. There were no illusions that Israel could be vanquished. Rather, the war was launched with the diplomatic aim of convincing a chastened, if still undefeated, Israel to negotiate on terms more favorable to the Arabs. Preparation for the war involved a loosening of ties with the Soviet Union; to that end, in July 1972 Sadat had announced the withdrawal of all Soviet military advisers who, it was claimed later, had opposed the Egyptian determination to fight.

Egypt did not win the war of 1973 in any military sense. As soon as Israel recovered from the initial shock of Arab gains in the first few days of fighting--and once the United States abandoned its early equivocation and resupplied Israel with a massive airlift--the Israelis demonstrated their military superiority. A ceasefire was secured by the United States.

Still, the initial successes in October 1973 were sufficient to allow Sadat to pronounce the war an Egyptian victory and to openly and honorably seek peace. Egyptian interests, as Sadat saw them, dictated peace with Israel. Despite almost immediate difficulties with his Syrian allies, Sadat signed the Sinai I (1974) and Sinai II (1975) disengagement agreements that returned Sinai and secured large foreign assistance commitments to Egypt.

When Israeli inflexibility combined with Arab resistance to slow events, Sadat made his dramatic journey to Jerusalem on Nov. 19, 1977, to address the Israeli Knesset (Parliament). The subsequent meeting in September 1978 of Sadat, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and U.S. Pres. Jimmy Carter at Camp David, Md., led directly to the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty of March 26, 1979.

The treaty provided for Egyptian-Israeli normalization and established a framework for the Palestinian issue. Its provisions included the withdrawal of Israeli armed forces and civilians from Sinai within three years, special security arrangements in Sinai, a buffer zone along the Sinai-Israel border to be manned by

United Nations peacekeeping forces, the exchange of ambassadors, and the establishment of normal economic and cultural relations. The status of the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza territories and the question of Palestinian autonomy were to be negotiated.

Sadat linked his peace initiative to the task of economic reconstruction, and an open-door policy was proclaimed. A liberalized Egyptian economy would be revitalized by the inflow of Western and Arab capital. The peace process did produce economic benefits, notably a vast U.S. aid program, begun in 1975, that reached more than $1,000,000,000 a year by the 1980s.

Egypt After Sadat The Sadat peace with Israel was not without its costs, however. As the narrowness of the Israeli interpretation of Palestinian autonomy under the Camp David agreement became clear, Sadat found it impossible to convince the Arab world that the accords dealt justly with legitimate Palestinian rights. Egypt lost the financial support of the Arab states and, shortly after signing the peace treaty, was expelled from the Arab League.

At home democratization of political life did not prove to be an acceptable substitute for economic revitalization. On Jan. 18-19, 1977, demonstrations provoked by economic hardship broke out in Egypt's major cities. An estimated 79 persons were killed, 1,000 were wounded, and 1,250 were jailed. The removal of the most oppressive features of Nasser's rule, the return in controlled form to a multiparty system, and (at least initially) the Sadat peace with Israel were all welcomed. But, as Egypt entered the 1980s, the lack of progress on the Palestinian issue and the failure to relieve mass economic hardships, heightened by widening class gaps, threatened to destabilize the Sadat regime. In the West, Sadat's international role initially obscured these danger signs. Then, in September 1981, his arrest of more than 1,300 of the political elite of Egypt signaled the precariousness of his position.

Sadat's assassination on Oct. 6, 1981 by members of the radical fringe of the Muslim religious opposition was greeted in Egypt by a deafening calm. It was with a profound sense of relief that Egyptians brought Hosni Mubarak, Sadat's handpicked vice president, to power with a mandate for cautious change. As an air force general and hero of the October War, Mubarak had played an important role in Sadat's rule from the early 1970s. (R.W.Ba.)
