MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
MISSION & VISION - REVISED 2024 GUIDING QUESTIONS STAFF
STUDENT ASSOCIATES
BOARD OF ADVISORS
PROGRAMS & CINEMA 2023-2024

Throughout the last year, The Block has undertaken a process of self-study and self-reflection to seek a deeper understanding of the value we are providing our stakeholders and of how we might continue to evolve.
What we learned has contributed significantly to a revision of our mission and vision as well as to the strategic goals that will guide our investment of time and resources. As we assessed our work and our contributions to campus and community, we asked the question, “Who are we now?”
This year we are proud to share our revised mission, vision, and guiding questions that reflect a clearer understanding of our purpose. This new framing seeks to foreground our style of collaboration, interdisciplinary connection, experimentation, and questioning and to better articulate the broad impact to which we aspire.
This reflection has reinforced our belief that art and museums have a vital role to play in fostering dialogue, inspiring inquiry, and building relationships across disciplines and perspectives. The Block exists within a dynamic university setting and an engaged public sphere, where our work connects students, scholars, artists, and our broader communities in meaningful ways. Through this process of self-examination, we reaffirmed our commitment to amplifying many voices, championing innovative approaches, and engaging deeply with the histories and contemporary experiences that shape our world.
The programs we have presented over the past year reflect this commitment. Rosalie Favell: Indigenous Artists Facing the Camera celebrated the individuality and identity of Indigenous artists through portraiture, offering an intimate and powerful testament to presence and representation. Actions for the Earth: Art, Care & Ecology invited us to consider the role of art in fostering both individual care and collective responsibility.
Reframe, a collaboration with Northwestern Athletics, underscored how art can serve as a powerful lens for self-reflection, dialogue, and identity. Led by visual artist and former Northwestern student-athlete Dwight White II, this program provided student-athletes, coaches, and staff an opportunity to engage deeply with The Block’s collection, drawing connections between artistic expression and personal growth. Through curated art selections, discussions, and creative responses, Reframe demonstrated how museums can be dynamic spaces for fostering understanding, resilience, and belonging.

This year we were especially proud that exhibitions such as The Block Collects, Looking 101, and For One and All underscored our commitment to using The Block’s collection as a dynamic teaching tool. These exhibitions showcased the richness of our holdings, reinforcing the museum’s role as a space for close looking, critical inquiry, and academic engagement across disciplines. By bringing artworks from the collection to the forefront, we continue to activate new ways of learning and discovery for students, faculty, and the public.
In the coming year, we will continue to advance this vision through a series of exhibitions, programs, and partnerships that reflect our dedication to critical conversations, expansive storytelling, and collaborative exploration. We are deeply grateful for the many individuals who have contributed their insights and perspectives to this effort.
As we move forward, we invite you to join us in shaping the next chapter of The Block’s evolution. Thank you for your continued support and belief in the work we do.
Lisa Graziose Corrin
Ellen Philips Katz Executive Director, The Block Museum of Art

The Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University is an engine that drives questioning, experimentation, and collaboration across fields of study, with visual arts at the center.
Weenvisionafutureinwhich

We do this by activating art’s power as a form of insight, research, and knowledge creation that makes human experience visible and material.

Fueled by a broad range of perspectives and ways of knowing, we create shared encounters with art and with one another to deepen understandings of the world and our place within it.
The Block has a sustained impact on its diverse audiences who join us in asking bold questions and who find meaning in ongoing engagement with the museum.
The Block is integral to Northwestern's commitments to academic excellence, dialogue across differences, public discourse, and student sense of belonging.
The Block is considered fundamental to teaching, learning, and research by faculty, students, and staff across all of Northwestern’s twelve schools.
The Block consistently embodies Northwestern values within decision-making, in organizational culture, and in all aspects of its work.
The Block propels the work of academic art museums forward, contributing to their potential, deepening their relevance, and expanding their value.
How can we activate the possibilities of what art can do?
The Block’s work is fueled by questioning. At the center of who we are as a museum is the insistence on asking questions of our work, our motivations, and our values. These questions guide our work:
Experiencing works of art can open spaces within and between us. Museums are special sites for exploring these spaces The Block convenes bold conversations that explore the relevance of art to our lives and that deepen our thinking about the world, ourselves, and our relationships with one another We are as committed to exploring what art can do as we are to studying what art is
How can we expand the possibilities of what an academic museum might be?
We have, at times, found ourselves constrained by assumptions about what a university art museum is and does Our new mission statement preserves an openness to how we define “ museum ” and how we execute our mission and vision. The Block is more than its gallery walls Through our work within and beyond our building, we nourish inquiry, ideas, and insights
What does it mean to be doing our work now and from here?
We deepen the resonance of our work by making decisions grounded in our time and place. We consider the needs of the current moment and its connections to the past We think about our place in all its richness and complexity within Northwestern; within the context of our region; and as part of the global community. We think about our place on Indigenous lands
How can the way we work be as important as what we produce?
For us, the journey is as important as the destination. Our most transformative efforts result from a museum-wide commitment to dialogue, collaboration, and reflection Shaping our approach to the specific needs of projects and partners, we challenge ourselves to try new ways of working that often yield unexpected insights and outcomes.
How
does our work connect diverse fields of study to yield new ways of thinking?
We believe encounters with art and artists can be a catalyst for discoveries that happen at the intersections of academic disciplines. Our work embodies this belief and amplifies Northwestern’s distinct commitment to interdisciplinary teaching, learning and research We are creative in imagining and encouraging collaboration among faculty, students, and staff that connects fields of study and changes the ways in which we think and work

The Block Museum Student Associates (BMSAs) serve as public facilitators, peerto-peer ambassadors for the museum on campus, and in-house student advisors for all levels of museum staff and our Board of Advisors. BMSA students lead tours throughout the museum and engage our broad array of campus and community visitors in dynamic conversations about art and ideas that are relevant to our lives today.
In addition to this public-facing role, Associates serve as key campus ambassadors for The Block and student advisors for all levels of museum staff and leadership, help to shape programming and projects at the museum, and learn more about museum practice through behindthe-scenes insights and experience.

Each year, The Block Museum expands its collection to support Northwestern University’s teaching and learning mission. These works become part of a growing resource for students, faculty, and the public activated through classes, research, and exhibitions
This exhibition featured works selected in conversation with the 2022–2023 Block Museum Student Associates (BMSAs), a cross-disciplinary group of undergraduate students who serve as gallery guides, campus ambassadors, and in-house advisors As part of their annual hands-on acquisition project, the BMSAs explored themes of gender in contemporary art
On their recommendation The Block acquired Frederick on Lake Pontchartrain | after Lincoln Beach by Derrick Woods-Morrow. The photograph was shown alongside other works from the museum’s collection that reflect diverse perspectives on gender, identity, and representation.
The exhibition was also on view from January 26 to March 3, 2024.

From its founding, The Block Museum of Art has been recognized for exploring the role of prints and printmaking in visual culture. With their capacity for reproduction and broad circulation, prints have long served as tools for sharing ideas and inspiring change. The Block’s early collecting efforts focused on etchings, lithographs, screenprints, and other printed media.
For One and All: Prints from The Block’s Collection celebrated the medium’s richness through works spanning centuries and movements. The exhibition explored histories of print production, circulation, and activism showing how artists have used prints to document, persuade, and engage.
Featured works included early modern European prints, Depression-era and activist graphics, and experimental works from U S print workshops many never before exhibited Together, they reflected the collection’s depth and the enduring relevance of printmaking in academic and public contexts Originally shown in Winter 2021, the exhibition was reinstalled in Fall 2023

This intimate exhibition, curated by 2023–24 Block Interdisciplinary Fellow Madison Brown, explored the layered meaning of family photographs images that often present idealized versions of ourselves and our relationships. Drawing from The Block’s collection, the exhibition featured personal snapshots and works by contemporary artists who integrate family photography into their practice to uncover the memories, absences, and emotional complexities beneath the surface.
Through visual storytelling, the artists invited viewers to question the relationship between what we see in a photograph and what we know, don’t know, or choose to forget The exhibition asked: How do photographs shape familial memory? What roles do absence, concealment, and imagination play in how we remember? In an era of filters and digital editing, this exhibition offered space for reflection on how photographs mediate personal and collective histories.

This exhibition invited visitors into The Block’s Teaching Gallery to experience a core classroom activity: close looking Most museumgoers spend less than 30 seconds with a work of art, often forming immediate judgments This gallery encouraged visitors to slow down, observe deeply, and reflect on how personal experiences shape interpretation
Deliberately presented without wall labels, the exhibition prioritized direct engagement with the artworks Information and prompts were available via brochures and online, supporting both individual reflection and group conversation.
The exhibition supported Northwestern’s undergraduate curriculum especially first-year seminars by featuring works from The Block’s collection selected in collaboration with faculty across disciplines. Each artwork related to course themes, demonstrating the value of visual analysis across fields of study.

May 3 - June 16, 2024

In Spring 2024, Maximiliano Cervantes, Tarik Dobbs, Morisha Moodley, and Jonathan Rosemond—candidates for the Master of Fine Arts degree—presented their thesis projects and concluded their residencies in the Department of Art, Theory, and Practice at Northwestern University. The exhibition marked the culmination of two years of intensive studio work and research and highlighted the artists’ diverse approaches to material, concept, and form. Presented in collaboration between the Department of Art, Theory, and Practice and The Block Museum of Art, the exhibition served as a platform for emerging voices in contemporary art and underscored the university’s commitment to supporting experimental practices and interdisciplinary inquiry.

In conjunction with Crying in H Mart, the 2023–24 One Book One Northwestern selection, The Block Museum presented a curated selection of prints and photographs exploring themes of family, grief, identity, and cultural connection. Inspired by Michelle Zauner’s memoir an intimate reflection on the loss of her mother and her connection to Korean heritage the artworks highlighted shared experiences of growing up, navigating intergenerational relationships, mourning, and moving between cultures
Drawn from The Block’s permanent collection, the selected works served as visual entry points into the book’s themes Accompanying texts offered brief contextual descriptions and suggested connections to Zauner’s writing, while also encouraging viewers to reflect personally and make their own associations.
The presentation invited the Northwestern community and broader public to engage with the memoir through art whether through quiet contemplation or shared conversation and served as a reminder of art’s power to illuminate complex emotional and cultural experiences.

Launched in 2022–23, Reframe is an ongoing partnership between The Block Museum and Northwestern Athletics that uses art to spark dialogue around identity, empathy, and belonging Co-developed with former Wildcat and artist Dwight White II, the initiative connects student-athletes, coaches, and staff with The Block’s collection through curated programs and resources In 2023–24, Reframe expanded to include the project’s first facilitated trainings, engaging athletics staff and student-athletes from five teams in reflective sessions around artworks like She’s Mighty, Mighty by Deborah Roberts A February 2024 evening event brought over 100 attendees together at Walter Athletics Center for art-centered storytelling and community building. Honoring Black History Month, the program celebrated Dwight White’s creative contributions and underscored the museum’s role as a campus-wide resource. In 2023–24, the Block Museum Student Associates selected two photographs by Cara Romero (Chemehuevi) for the museum’s annual student-led acquisition: TV Indians (2017) and Amber Morningstar (2020) Romero’s vivid, cinematic images explore Indigenous identity, media representation, and cultural visibility with nuance and wit This year’s theme “humor as an artistic strategy” prompted students to reflect on how comedy can critique power and shape perception Romero’s work offered a powerful opportunity to consider Indigenous self-representation in contemporary art, challenging stereotypes and prompting critical conversations. The acquisition aligns with The Block’s mission to expand perspectives in the collection and create opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching and research.

“Our students had to consider aspects of their own positionality and their own understanding and relationship to humor This was a challenging theme, but it offered really rich possibilities and a really important space for growth.”
– Erin Northington, Block Museum Susan and Stephen Wilson Associate Director Campus and Community Education and Engagement
In 2023–2024, The Block Museum’s Collection Spotlight blog series continued to illuminate artworks from the museum’s permanent collection, offering new entry points for reflection, teaching, and engagement. Each post highlights a single artwork, sharing insights into the artist’s practice, historical context, and relevance to contemporary questions. Written by interns, researchers, and staff, the series showcases the breadth of The Block’s holdings while encouraging close looking and interdisciplinary thinking.

“Knowless empathy for Black men ’ s self-presentation is evident in her careful drawing of the two figures’ hair the only aspect of the drawing not outlined in either black or white Her love for the men who have shaped her life comes through in her detailed attention to the two figures, rendered with very realistic, softly shaded facial features”
“Yaus work reflects Chinese traditions but also embodies a vital international modernist spirit Her work represents the transnational experience of an artist who grew up in China and worked in the US Yaus artwork, which she referred to as her “daughters,” serves as a bridge between the artist’s two worlds and her experiences of immigration”

“The artist Lowell Nesbitt (1933–1993) was invited to join the NASA Art Program to document the Apollo 9 mission in March 1969 and the Apollo 13 mission in April 1970 As a NASA artist, Nesbitt joined Norman Rockwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and others who participated in the program Nesbitt, who was well-known for large-scale, hyperrealistic flower paintings, produced a varied array of works during his two years at NASA, including the Moon Shot print series in 1969”

“All the objects used for the composition of Bacchus were gathered from a junkyard in Brazil Specific brands and logos can be found including a Shell brand oil barrel on the right and several Sherman-Williams Kem Tone containers The Baroque art to which Muniz refers is generally associated with excess, further highlighting the theme of consumption Additionally, the vastness of the composition and Bacchuss association with inebriation point to the wild excesses of waste in today’s culture”

In 2023–2024, The Block Museum’s collection was activated in exhibitions, classrooms, public programs, and national collaborations. Artworks sparked conversations about memory, identity, technology, humor, and representation appearing not only on gallery walls, but in coursework, research, and off-site installations. Long-held pieces gained fresh context through new interpretation, while recent acquisitions introduced perspectives that broaden the scope of inquiry Whether through a campus seminar or a riverside banner, the collection supported curiosity and connection This year reaffirmed The Block’s role as a teaching museum—one where art is not just displayed, but continually explored, questioned, and shared
