Before the Ring, and Proposal Ariel and Brad met on Block Island in 2013. It was Ariel’s first summer working on the island, and one night out, her cousin Jake introduced her to his friend Brad. The rest was history. On their third year anniversary, Brad took Ariel to dinner at a very fancy restaurant in Providence. With a table by the fireplace, Brad and Ariel shared fabulous wine and conversation. After finishing dinner, Brad quietly grabbed a box out of his coat, held it up, and asked Ariel to marry him. Block Island Because...... Anyplace other than Block Island wouldn’t have made sense for Ariel and Brad — the island is Brad’s home, where the couple works, and where they met. Ariel and her family would visit the island on their boat each summer to see her uncle and cousins that live on the island. Wedding Day The wedding ceremony took place on The Atlantic Inn’s lawn, and Ariel’s cousin Jackie, officiated. The arch that the newlyweds were married under was made from Block Island drift wood, and the “guest book” was a nau-
6
tical map of the island that guests signed. The reception was held under the tent at The Sullivan House where guests enjoyed delicious food and a spectacular sunset. There was no seating chart and no sit down meal, letting guests flow through the reception and choose to sit where they wished. The DJ kept everyone dancing all night long. Wedding Weekend Ariel and Brad had a barbecue and lobster bake at the rehearsal dinner, followed by a welcome party for all at The Atlantic Inn. Brad’s parent’s are the innkeepers of The Atlantic, and it’s also where the couple works. DIY creations included whiskey bottles with string lights, Mason jars filled with island sand and tea lights for the tables, and tiny glass jugs and jars that Brad’s mom filled with tiny flower arrangements with flowers from her own garden. A fun “rap style” farewell brunch was held for guests on Sunday morning, With perfect weather for each day, magical sunsets ended each day. The couple built a wedding website to help guests with boat schedules, plane rides, accommodations, and babysitting, as well as a list of the weekend activities.

Before the Ring, and Proposal After trying the online dating scene for awhile, Christina was completely done with it until a friend talked her into trying again, and that’s when Christina and Alberto started chatting. They made a plan to meet at a local restaurant, and they really hit it off. They met up again a few days later, and started to spend more time together. Because Christina and her family own Aldo’s Restaurant, she spends half of the year on Block Island, and eventually Alberto started to join her, and worked at The Spring House Hotel for three summers before joining the staff, and family, at Aldo’s. Christina became pregnant, and at eight months along Alberto surprised her with a maternity shoot. They went to all of their favorite scenic spots on the island, and the last spot was Black Rock. Alberto had Christina walk up a very small cliff to get to this amazing bluff that makes you feel like you’re on top of the ocean. Alberto had the photographer distract Christina for a moment, and when she turned back around, he was on one knee with a ring, and at the bottom of the cliff was Christina’s whole family.
Wedding Day Christina and her bridesmaids had their makeup and hair done at a close friend’s house where several of her out of town guests stayed for the weekend. The bride then got dressed at The Sullivan House in the suite that she and Alberto would stay in for the night. Alberto and the groomsmen got ready at The Bellevue House. The ceremony and the reception took place at The Sullivan House where the couple’s family and friends gathered for a relaxing and fun day after a busy summer of working on the island. Christina’s favorite moments from the ceremony included walking down the aisle with her dad, having a best friend as their officiant, getting mooned by some boaters in the pond, and becoming husband and wife. Guests raved about the food — the braised short rib was a favorite. Favors were homemade lemoncello made at Aldo’s. With great speeches given by the maid of honor and best man, spectacular views and sunset, a photo booth for priceless and fun pictures, the day was exactly what the couple had hoped and dreamed for. The couple and their guests headed to Yellow Kittens after the reception for more dancing and celebration.
Block Island Because...... Block Island is Christina’s home.

Before the Ring, and Proposal Amy and Ryan frequented the same coffee shop every morning in 2012. They got to know each other by waiting in line due to very slow service, and one morning, Ryan asked Amy to go out for breakfast with him. She declined, but told him she would have a cup of coffee with him the following week. When he asked her out for breakfast again the next week, she accepted. In the summer of 2018, Ryan and Amy had dinner plans at The Atlantic Inn. Ryan insisted that they visit the Southeast Lighthouse before dinner because they had a little extra time before their reservation and their kids were already with the babysitter. When they got to the Southeast Lighthouse, they walked to the edge of the lawn and Ryan proposed. Amy was surprised and ecstatic. There was one other person enjoying the scenery — he didn’t speak any English, but they convinced him to take their picture. Block Island Because....... Ryan has been visiting Block Island with his family for over 35 years. When the pair first started dating, Ryan brought Amy to visit for a couple of nights and she fell in love with both Ryan, and the island. Wedding Day The ceremony took place on the back lawn at the Spring House. Amy and Ryan agree that best part of the ceremony was by far the vows. The couple chose to read
10
and write their vows together — an extremely realistic take on the actuality of what marriage is — and alternated reading their vows together. The reception was on the back patio of the Spring House. Highlights included the couple’s first dance, to the Carpenter’s “Close to You”, guest’s impromptu speeches, and Ryan’s dad’s killer dance moves. The raw bar served during cocktail hour was raved about by all, as were the scallops and the steak at dinner. Wedding Weekend Guests traveled from all four corners of the country, flying into Providence and making the trek to the island. The second they all stepped foot on the island, they understood that their journey was worth the trip. Block Island provided the perfect atmosphere for the important people in Ryan and Amy’s lives to merge together as one family. Their group bonded while meeting on ferry rides while overlooking the perfect blue sea; at dinners at The National; group trips to paint the rock; on trips to the beach with magnificent waves, and at the rehearsal dinner lobster bake at a private residence, where the couple gave tours of the island. Welcome bags were handed out in custom beach bags that included embroidered beach towels, chapstick, travel tins with “A & R” m&m’s, and “Q” sunglasses. The morning after the wedding, Amy and Ryan had their guests meet for breakfast at Ernie’s in Old Harbor.

Before the Ring, and Proposal Anna and Parth met on a dating site and had their first date at a pub in Notting Hill. They bonded over their love of languages and long walks in nature. Parth proposed in the summer of 2018 while vacationing on the island. They both woke up early, and Anna suggested a walk on the beach to see the sunrise. Before she knew it Parth was pulling on a t-shirt that had a picture of them on it and said: Anna Pearce, will you marry me? Block Island Because...... Anna and Parth pretty much always knew they would get married on Block Island, since it is Anna’s favorite place in the world, and quickly becoming one of Parth’s, too. Wedding Day Anna and Parth did a first look at the beach path north of state beach, where Anna has been going to the beach since she was little. Anna recalls how special it was going up that path she’d walked a thousand times, to meet her future husband. After a storm on Friday, the Saturday
of the wedding was an absolutely beautiful day — the views from Stonebeach were gorgeous and everyone was treated to a perfect September afternoon. The ceremony was especially personal with vows written by Anna and Parth, officiated by a family friend, and held under an arbor handmade by the bride’s brother. The American guests didn’t know they were in for such a treat with the raucous British speeches! The evening ended with a spectacular dance party. Wedding Weekend Block Island pulled out all its charms, but the added excitement of Hurricane Dorian threatening the arrival of about a third of the wedding guests on the Friday before the wedding. The couple started getting in touch with everyone on Wednesday to warn them, and people ended up coming early, as New England Airlines flew plane after plane of people over from Westerly. Almost everyone made it – Parth even thanked the airlines in his speech at the wedding – and it was such an adventure that it became part of the lore of the weekend.

Top 3 pieces of advice: 1. Hire local vendors! They are all on top of the weather situation and had Plan B and Plan C and Plan D all ready to go if it needed to happen. 2. Try to get to the island at least a few days (or even a week) before the wedding. 3. Pick people you trust and delegate! Then, stop worrying.

Before the Ring and Proposal Amanda and Tim met eight years ago at a bar in Newport called Billy Goode’s. There was a band that night so the bar was crowded, but within minutes upon Tim’s arrival, their eyes locked. Amanda made her way over to Tim to talk, and the rest is history. The day Tim and Amanda became engaged, they spent the afternoon sightseeing along the southern California coast, ending at Pacific Beach in San Diego where they had lunch and walked the boardwalk. Just before sunset, they found a spot to sit on the beach, and Tim actually went swimming in the freezing water just minutes before he proposed. Amanda was really surprised — she wasn’t expecting it at all. Block Island Because...... Block Island has always been a special place for Amanda and Tim. For this couple, the island is a wonderful place to escape the daily grind and experience absolute serenity, and they wanted to share this same feeling with friends and family. Wedding Day Beautiful weather made for a picture perfect wedding day. The couple’s first look was a special moment, and Amanda also did a first look with her dad and two broth-

ers. Taking photos with the bridal party was a fun part of the afternoon. Tim arrived at the ceremony in a Block Island Fire Department engine, as he is a fireman at the Newport Fire Department. The outdoor ceremony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean was officiated by the couple’s friend, and Tim’s fire Captain. Amanda and Tim wrote their own wedding vows to each other creating an intimate touch to the day. The ceremony was followed by a cocktail hour on the porch and a delicious dinner in the historic Spring House Hotel, with dancing in Victoria’s Parlor to a customized playlist created by the newlyweds. Wedding Weekend Guests were treated to welcome bags upon check in with personalized koozies, and a detailed itinerary for the weekend. Most guests stayed for two nights to get the most out of what Block Island has to offer. The rehearsal dinner was held at Winfield’s and afterwards, the wedding party walked next door to Yellow Kittens for a welcome reception where they met the rest of the guests. On Saturday morning Amanda and Tim hosted their own polar plunge at Surf beach. After the evening reception, everyone headed to Yellow Kittens to keep the party going. A Sunday brunch was held at Ballard’s — a nice send off for guests.

WEDDING CHECK LIST 10 TO 12 MONTHS OUT Pick a Date and discuss a budget Decide on three different preferred dates for your wedding and list in order of preference. Remember that June and September are peak wedding months on Block Island — venues may have restrictions that don’t meet your guest count or budget. Most hotels will have a three-night minimum required of your guests in July and August. If you are on a tight budget, consider having your wedding on a day other than Saturday. Come up with an estimated guest count Make a list of all the people you would like to see at the wedding. Keep in mind: more guests equal more money. Before the Ring, and Proposal Megan and Charlie’s story started about 20 years ago, on the night of the first of many annual Kieltyka-Davis family summer dinners. Fast forward several years to a montage of summer dinners, days at the beach, boogie boarding, Frisbee, and tans. Charlie and Megan were there for all of it, and for many years remained friendly family acquaintances. The stars began to align in the summer of 2015. While Megan and Charlie had thought they were being subtle, they had been a bit more obvious than either had intended. It had become clear to everyone else that Charlie and Megan liked each other. Charlie proposed to Megan the night of their annual Christmas party. Megan was just about finished getting ready, when Charlie snuck out the ring, and a bottle of champagne. When Megan came out, she took one look at the ring and froze. Charlie got down on his knee and asked her if she would marry him. Block Island Because...... The island is incredibly special to Megan and Charlie, their families, and their relationship. There really was no other place! Wedding Day On the lawn overlooking the Great Salt Pond, the ceremony was officiated by Charlie’s uncle, who played

an indirect, but very large role in Megan and Charlie’s relationship — he introduced the two families. The arbor the couple was married under was built by Megan’s parents, made from driftwood they had collected from around the island. Highlights included delicious food — the braised short rib was a favorite, the flowers and décor transformed the tent and the band kept everyone dancing right until the end of the evening. When the reception ended, the wedding party, families, and the majority of the guests went to the Kieltyka house for the after party and more food, drinks, and dancing. Wedding Weekend Megan and Charlie created a brochure for guests, complete with map highlighting their favorite spots around the island. The couple sent out holiday cards in December reminding everyone to book their ferries and hotels or houses, and their wedding website had very detailed instructions on all of the different ways to get to the island. Both families hosted guests who had arrived on Thursday evening for dinner and drinks. On Friday, a small rehearsal dinner was held on the back patio of the Spring House, and after dinner everyone headed down to where it all began (Captain Nick’s) and met up with friends for wedding-eve drink. The Davis’ hosted brunch at their home on Sunday morning before guests started to leave.

Top 3 pieces of advice: 1. Be patient. Block Island tends to run a little differently, so just know that the vendors know what needs to be done to make a wedding perfect. 2. Tell guests early. Especially in the summer, ferries fill up and hotels get booked. 3. Take a moment to appreciate the day! Take a step back and appreciate that everyone you know and love came to celebrate with you.

Before the Ring, and Proposal Bill and Brooke met on the 10th annual “Crawl around the Block.” Amongst the sea of 200 people in matching shirts, Brooke and Bill managed to lock eyes and the rest was history. They spent the day enjoying the sights and each other on the island. After dancing at Ballard’s they made plans to see each other again, and haven’t been apart since. Bill proposed to Brooke on a sunset cruise in Key West. Brooke said yes and they danced to “Just the two of Us” played by a local band over the water. It was romantic and unexpected, just as Bill had hoped for. Block Island Because…… Brooke had always dreamed of getting married on a beach, and this couple couldn’t imagine having their wedding anywhere else. Block Island is where they met! Wedding Day On the morning of the wedding, the groom went swim-

ming with his groomsmen to start the day off. The weather was perfect for the official last day of summer, and Brooke spent the entire day barefoot — including walking down the sandy aisle. Highlights included having the ocean as a backdrop for the ceremony, the jumbo shrimp at the cocktail hour, a delicious steak and lobster dinner, and dancing at Ballard’s. On each table were ‘message in a bottle’ centerpieces made by Brooke, a memorial to the bride’s parents. Wedding Weekend Brooke and Bill created a website for guests with links to many different hotels and rentals throughout the island, as well as ferry and flight schedules. Their guests enjoyed a weekend on the island and were able to explore the island on their own time. The couple hosted a welcome party and barbecue dinner at Club Soda on the Friday night, and refer to this venue as “a hidden gem” with delicious food and friendly staff.

Before the Ring, and Proposal Felicia and Steve both worked together in 2014, but worked different shifts with just an hour of overlap. Felicia was working late one day, and Steve sent her a message over an interoffice messenger system asking for a favor. He later shared that it was just an excuse to get the conversation started. In return for her unneeded assistance, he offered to buy Felicia a drink. She said yes, but declined dinner. Steve lived a short block from where Felicia lived at the time, so she offered to help him out with the renovation of his new home instead. She learned later that Steve told his parents the night after their first date that he had found the woman he was going to marry. Steve proposed to Felicia on her 28th birthday, almost 2 years after their first date, while on a trip to Hawaii after Christmas. Block Island Because…… While growing up, Felicia would sail to Block Island with her grandparents every summer. They had a mooring in New Harbor and spent as much of the summer on the island as possible. After they got engaged Steve simply stated “I just assumed we’d get married on Block Island!”, and suddenly, nowhere else made sense. It had to be Block Island.

Wedding Day Felicia and Steve had a very specific vision for their wedding — they wanted it to be relaxed and Rhode Islandthemed. They suggested casual dress for guests, had lawn games to enjoy pre-and-post-ceremony, served Del’s lemonade as guests arrived, and used an oar for a guest book. A New England themed dinner menu was served with clam cakes, New England clam chowder, and lobster rolls, and they had a beach bonfire for an after party. The hope was to give all of the out-of-town guests a great first “Rhode Island” experience. People on boats in the Great Salt Pond and at The Oar sang “Sweet Caroline” while the couple exchanged vows, and all the boats honked their horns when Felicia and Steve sealed their vows with a kiss. Wedding Weekend Felicia and Steve had a wedding website including information on ferry schedules, the link to the Block Island Chamber of Commerce for a complete list of accommodations, and a reminder to book early. A welcome event for family and guests was held on Friday evening at Ballard’s, and on Saturday evening a southern style barbecue rehearsal dinner was held on the porch of The Sullivan House. The wedding after-party was a beach bonfire with s’mores and pizza from the Block Island Pizza Pie Company. On the day after the wedding, the couple gathered with remaining family and guests at Ballard’s for drinks.

Top 3 pieces of advice: 1. Be sure to give your out of town guests as much information as possible about what to expect regarding transportation and accommodations. 2. Delegate tasks and ship items when planning from afar. We had a ton of décor shipped to family members that lived in R.I. and were taking a vehicle to the island, to avoid having to fit everything ourselves. 3. Have fun! Once you step off the ferry onto the island, remember what you’re there for – to marry the love of your life on one of the most beautiful places there is.

Before the Ring, and Proposal Helen and Rob had known each other for years through mutual acquaintances. Both having been in long term relationships, they were just happy to have found each other — they have been together more than eight years at this point. After asking Helen’s older kids for their blessings, Rob proposed at their home on Christmas morning, 2017 in front of their 5 children and both of their mothers. Block Island Because…… Rob and Helen both have been visiting Block Island for almost 20 years, but together, with their children for the past eight years. They love the fact that all of their kids have experienced the island every summer for virtually their entire lives — from babies in a tent on Crescent Beach, to being old enough to ride bikes all over the island, and now some old enough to drive. The entire family can’t imagine a summer without visiting the island for a week in the summer. Wedding Day Helen and Rob wrote their own vows for each other that they didn’t hear until the ceremony. The couple also

asked their officiant to incorporate their five children into the ceremony, for this was not only joining the pair in marriage, but blending their families together. The reception included hors d’ouvres and drinks on the patio, dinner inside in the dining room, and dessert and dancing outside on the patio. With so many young kids in attendance, they had a long kids-only table – the kids loved it, as did the parents. Guests raved about the food, with swordfish and steak being a favorite. As the reception wrapped up, the skies opened up with rain, and the entire group danced in the rain on the lawn of the Spring House. Wedding Weekend Being second marriages for the both Helen and Rob, the intention was to keep the weekend low key. The couple hosted an informal rehearsal dinner and welcome party at the home they had rented for the week, with pizza, wings and salad ordered from Club Soda. The wedding ceremony was held the next day, on a Sunday, with sunny skies. The party continued on until they left the following weekend. “Magical” was the adjective most used to describe the entire week.

Before the Ring, and Proposal Lauren and Kevin worked for the same company for almost a year before one fateful happy hour brought them together. On the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend in 2013, their co-workers decided to kick off the long weekend with a happy hour at a favorite spot. The pair got to talking, and when everyone started to go home they just weren’t ready to end the night. Kevin proposed at Black Rock Harbor four years after becoming a couple on September 1, 2017. Block Island because…… Lauren grew up vacationing on Block Island with her parents, and they wanted their wedding to be a weekend long event for all of their guests. Wedding Day The ceremony took place at St. Andrew Church in town and included five young ring bearers, all nephews of the couple. Guests thought it was the nicest mass they had ever attended. After the ceremony Lauren and Kevin enjoyed stepping away for a little bit to take portraits at various locations around the island. The reception, with a formal sit

down dinner, was held under the tent at The Sullivan House. Highlights included the speeches given by Lauren’s father, the maid of honor, the best man, and a blessing presented by Lauren’s brother. Guests had fun with the photo booth and the band had everyone up and dancing right up to the last song of the evening. Wedding Weekend This couple created their own magazine for their weekend that included recommendations on things to do, what to eat, where to go, favorite stores, and details on the wedding party. Many of the events were located in town, allowing guests to walk from one event to the other. The weekend kicked off on Thursday with a barbecue at Lauren’s family house. A welcome bonfire was held at Ballard’s after the rehearsal dinner at the National Hotel. After the wedding was over, the couple invited everyone to Captain Nick’s for an after party that included latenight food from Poor People’s Pub. A catered brunch was held at Lauren’s family home the morning after the wedding.

Wedding Show – even if you’re a month out and think you have all of your vendors. 3. Stay organized – there’s a lot of moving parts (and people) in a destination wedding. Eva Girard and Joseph Murray were engaged September 5, 2019 at long time friend Lorraine Cyr’s home. Eva has been vacationing on Block Island for more than 35 years, most of which was at the Surf Hotel. Joe has been joining Eva the last nine years and is in love with everything Block Island, as well. The Girard annual vacations in August became a reunion of former clients of the Surf Hotel. After the big proposal, the couple shared in a toast with family and friends. Father Joe of St. Andrew Church blessed the ring. Block Island is definitely a possibility for Eva and Joe’s wedding.

I have been going there since I was three months old to visit my grandparents’ house on West Side Road. Before the Ring, and Proposal On a trip to visit her sister in Georgia, Krissy was introduced to Chad at a resort on St. Simons Island. Krissy and Chad talked all day and night. A hurricane blew in and postponed Krissy’s trip home, and it wasn’t long after that Chad took several trips to spend as much time as he could with Krissy, in a variety of places including Block Island. The couple knew it was time to move forward with their love for each other. In the summer of 2016, they booked a room in Providence for the Water Fire event, and Chad proposed that night, alongside the waterway. Block Island Because…… Krissy spent family vacations as a child visiting Block Island, and her family would stay at The Narragansett Inn. It had always been Krissy’s dream to have a wedding at the Surf Hotel, now the new Block Island Beach House. Wedding Day Everyone was in awe over the views and location at The Block Island Beach House, and were blown away by the food. Guests enjoyed lobster sliders, beef brisket,

lobster mac ‘n cheese, fried green beans, burger sliders, and shrimp cocktail. The ceremony took place on the beach just below the hotel, where waves were crashing and guests dressed in shades of blue to make the photos unique. Wedding Weekend A welcome party was held at Summer Hill, a rented home for the weekend. Krissy made welcome bags for her guests that included water, snacks, chocolate, a weekend itinerary, and a map of Block Island. When guests arrived, there were name tags on their doors, and wine and cheese. The rehearsal dinner was on the lawn of Summer Hill where a fabulous dinner was prepared. Macaroni salad and potato salad was brought in from Aldo’s restaurant. Krissy and her mom stocked the house with hot dogs, burgers, snacks, water, wine, beer, and all kinds of other foods for the weekend. Chad’s dad and wife prepared a farewell breakfast, which included home-made corned beef hash.

Top 3 pieces of advice: 1. Rent a huge house for family to stay at, everyone can chip in. 2. Keep it simple. Less moving parts mean less can go wrong. 3. You don’t need to spend a fortune to have the time of your life. Hire locals, relax, and enjoy every single moment!

Before the Ring, and Proposal Natalie and Tom met through mutual friends at the first annual St. Patty’s Day Bar Crawl that happens in Boston each year. Natalie caught Tom’s eye with her crazy dance moves, and the rest is history. On a trip to Israel to see Natalie’s family, the pair went on their annual bike ride along the beaches of Tel Aviv to Old Jaffa. Tom popped the question along the way, and the couple flew back home engaged. Block Island Because...... Natalie and Tom visited Block Island on their third anniversary of dating and fell in love with it. When the couple returned to look at wedding venues, they knew it was the perfect place to get married and have a wedding weekend that would bring their closest friends and family together. Wedding Day Natalie’s family is from Israel, so there was the seven blessings read in Hebrew by Natalie’s dad, and seven important people in our lives read it in English. The Spring House Hotel hosted the cocktail hour and reception on the back terrace under a tent with a raw bar that was

filled with shrimp cocktail and oysters — the perfect compliment to a classic New England wedding. Highlights included two amazing speeches made by Natalie’s maid of honor, and Tom’s best man. Following tradition, the couple broke the glass at the end, which was a perfect transition into a fun night ahead. The second everyone moved to the lounge, the dance floor was packed with people dancing to tunes from the DJ. In Jewish tradition, the bride and groom were lifted on chairs while everyone cheered! The Wedding Weekend Natalie and Tom had a very detailed wedding website and included extra information about visiting Block Island on their invitation. They also sent a save-the-date for guests to make plans well ahead of time. A welcome bonfire was held at Ballard’s on Friday night, with the most amazing weather and sunset. Guests loved the relaxed environment, sipping cocktails on the beach, and exploring an island they had never been to. Natalie and Tom’s wedding also served as a family reunion for both families. Each family rented a large house for the weekend, and are already asking if everyone can all go back for their five-year anniversary.

Top 3 pieces of advice: 1. When you get to the island forget about all the stress of planning a wedding. †2. Enjoy all the people who are traveling so far to spend this time with you. 3. Take a step back during the day to take a mental snapshot of how you feel surrounded by all the people that made you who you are.
