McGarry says that BIRM would like to be able to offer recycling for large plastic items, but that not enough comes through the transfer station to make it viable. The Central Landfill in Johnston is actually not a long trip, and is easily combined with a stop at the malls in Warwick and Cranston. Just take Exit 5 off Route 295 and follow the signs. The Landfill is open from 6 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on weekdays, and from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturdays. Call 466-2864 for Block Island Transfer Station hours that change seasonally.
