Whether outdoor areas need a jet wash, or the carpets could do with a steam clean, spring is an ideal time of year for a big workplace clean.

Work out the need Planning for the spring clean includes working out which cleaning products will work hardest in each environment.

While one product may cost a little more than another equivalent, user experience and evidence could show it is more concentrated, more efficient and lasts longer. In other words, it’s actually cheaper in use than the lower priced version.

Use chemicals safely Chemicals have their place in certain areas of the workplace, including healthcare, food preparation and animal environments.

Where you need to use chemical products it’s important to provide all end users with the respective safety data sheets and the right personal protective equipment.

End users should also be given protective equipment and uniforms, such as a face mask, goggles and apron, free of charge, whenever they need to use chemicals.

Higher workplace temperatures can have an even bigger impact than cold ones on employee satisfaction.

While our comfort at both ends of the thermometer matters, employers need to prepare for the warmer months to support better wellbeing and productivity.

Three ways to get an office ready for the heat include air quality, air temperature and hydration.

Although opening windows seems an obvious answer to the heat, air quality has to be considered. This can have a significant impact on employee health and productivity.

Keeping everyone happy about the temperature isn’t always easy. 15% of workers say they have argued with a co-worker about office temperature and nearly one in five have secretly changed the office temperature during the summer. Of these 13% made it cooler and 6% made it warmer.

Making good quality, filtered water easily available to employees is even more important when it gets hot, but also has a direct impact on productivity.

Studies have found poor air quality and elevated temperatures can consistently lower performance by up to 10%, with researchers measuring factors such as typing speed and units’ output.

The World Green Building Council recorded an 11% increase in productivity as a result of increased fresh air to workstations and a reduction in pollutants.

Air purifiers can safely remove 99.97% of airborne particles, even those as small as 0.3 microns, including allergens, viruses, germs, dust mites, mould spores, pet dander and cigarette smoke.

Giving people more personalised control over their thermal comfort can help to stop these kinds of arguments.

Desktop or deskside fans give individuals the chance to cool down when they feel warm, without annoying cooler colleagues by turning up the air conditioning.

Not only will it prevent dehydration, but water has numerous benefits for health, helping to improve sleep quality and energy levels, and improving focus and alertness levels.

Employers can support employee hydration by providing water coolers on every floor or making bottled water readily available in kitchen areas.
