Biggest rugby fan Kaikoura’s world-famous giant lobster has had a makeover to become the ‘Mainland’s biggest rugby fan’. The normally orange Lobster Inn trademark has been painted in black and white for Rugby World Cup 2011. “The Kaikoura region is a popular tourist spot and the ‘Paint It Black’ lobster is a great way for our region to show we’re cheering for our team too...”, restaurant manager Neil Pablecheque says. The lobster reached icon status in New Zealand in 1998 when it featured on a New Zealand post stamp issue celebrating town icons.

REVIEW

Arj Barker Marlborough Civic Theatre Reviewed by Damian George The Marlborough Civic Theatre was treated to a masterful performance from one of the world’s premier comedians Arj Barker last Tuesday. For those of you who missed it - whoops! On the surface, it may appear as though Barker is just spinning off some yarns, which, to an extent, he is. But, as the show goes on, it becomes clear the Californian comedian’s show is in fact a carefully crafted, highly skilled composition. On more than one occasion, Barker ties up loose ends some 20 or 30 minutes after they have gone as ‘dud’ jokes earlier in the set. You may call it a 20-minute set-up, but with 20 minutes of comedy inbetween. The rhythm of Barker’s performance and the subtle touches thrown in is like listening to Abbey Road. Like most modern-day comedians, the Flight of the Conchords’ star observes social curiosities, but does it with a twist, turning an argument on its head. Past favourites such as his blaming of global warming on the sun (“All I’m saying is: When I burn my toast, I don’t blame the toaster”), were replaced with radical ideas such as that nature is not our friend, but our enemy. Barker is also an expert harmonica player, and treated the audience to a few blues-style cameos throughout the set. A must-see? Definitely.
