The victories they enjoyed on the way to the championship were certainly the result of hard work and many, many hours of practice, but when they stepped onto the floor, the Patriotes made it look easy.

In their first game of the tournament they outscored ninth-ranked ES Macdonald-Cartier 48-29.

In game two it was a 62-23 win over fourteenth-ranked Rainy River.

Game three was a 42-26 over sixthranked Guido de Bres.

they managed a 51-34 victory, which put them in the gold medal game against number one-ranked NouvelleAlliance.

In a game between number one ranked Nouvelle-Alliance and threeranked La Citadelle a number oneranked and a number three-ranked team, you could expect to see some really great basketball, and probably a tight game, and it was, for the first few minutes when both teams seemed to be having trouble finding the range. The Patriotes, however, quickly adjusted and the race was on. La Citadelle led 9-4 after the first quarter, but 27-14 at the half. They increased their margin to 18 points (43-25) by the end of the third and then coasted (just a bit) to a 52-34 final.

Following the game an emotional coach Stephane Fontaine could not say enough about what he was feeling about his players.

“Great pride in this team,” said Fontaine. “I’ve known them since they were little, most of them. Four of them have played senior with me since they were in grade nine, so it’s a culmination of all that.

“We’re finally at our final destination together and to share with them the utmost pinnacle of our high school sport…great pride, great pride and I’m

so happy for them.”

The Patriotes will be losing six players from their championship team, and that loss made the victory somewhat bittersweet for teammates who had been together for so long.

Myriam Fontaine, one of the team’s captains and a perennial leading scorer said there was a real mix of emotions.

“It is bittersweet,” said Fontaine, when asked about playing her final game as a Patriote. “Some of us have been together so long, been through so much together and have become such good friends, but it couldn’t have ended up any better.”

Karate Komments - Supporting your child in Karate

T

he parents of children that are being enrolled in karate classes today were children themselves when the martial arts began gaining acceptance as a mainstream sport in this area.

Although few of these parents may at some time have been involved in a martial art, the majority of them were concentrating on hockey, soccer, basketball, and various other more traditional sports.

Karate can be a difficult sport for some children without proper support from their parents. For a child to succeed at karate and earn that coveted Black Belt requires perseverance over a period of many years. There are often slumps to get through, and children do not yet have the life experience to understand that by pushing forward they will achieve their goals. The necessary repetition and refinement of kata do not make sense to some children who are used to learning something and then quickly moving on. The self-defense and sparring drills, even though there is no contact

may seem a bit frightening to some children.

It is easier for parents to give informed encouragement in a sport that they themselves have previously participated in and have a good understanding of. A parent without a martial art background may initially lack understanding of technical details and methodology of instruction.

Parents should always feel free to talk with their child’s instructor before or after class – questions are always welcome.

At Seaway Karate we view this interaction as a ‘partnership with parents” which gives us a better understanding of your child’s needs or concerns which can be addressed to help facilate their development. Behind every child that climbs the karate ranks and eventually earns the rank of Shodan (First degree black belt) after several years of training, are parents, possessing the same attributes needed by the child to achieve that rank – discipline, focus, commitment, sacrifice and perseverance.

Here are a few tips for Karate parents that may be helpful.

1) Attend as many classes as possible. With a parent present a child usually tries extra hard to impress. You will learn a few things about the

art and become “karate literate” enough to be able to help your child.

2) Don’t judge your child’s performance – leave that up to the instructors. The supportive parent must stay positive. A correction by the instructor is taken on its technical merit, while critism from a parent can negatively affect the child’s progress and development. Stay complimentary, focus on fun and stay committed to goals.

3) Video your child’s kata and technique – review the video pointing out only the positives.

The child will discover on their own the areas that can use improvement.

4) Re-inforcement at home – the physical skills learned by children are important, but not as valuable as the life skills – focus, discipline perseverance and leadership. Using time away from karate to positively reinforce these is a great way to support your child.

5) Help your child have fun – a parent’s encouragement and positive attitude are instrumental in ensuring that your child has fun at class. The art of karate is a blending of fun and serious training. Help your child achieve the proper balance.

a lot of time training for their favourite sport, highland dancing. Tia (13) and Kiera (10) have each been taking highland dancing lessons since the age of 4 and they’ve never looked back. Their hard work and determination are put to the test often at local competitions. This summer the girls had the opportunity to expand their horizons as they shared their favourite dancing moment together at the National Highland Dancing competition in Vancouver, B.C. The three day competition held at the Richmond Oval saw dancers from around the world competing in a variety of highland dances.

Tia and Kiera both competed in the Premier divisions. Tia enjoyed meeting competitors from around the world while Kiera’s favourite moment was dancing in front of the large crowd. It was truly a sporting moment to treasure.

How amateur boxing matches are made weeks before his own local event.

If you have ever gone to an amateur boxing night, you would have seen good, evenly matched amateur boxing contests. There would be plenty of action, good sportsmanship, respect and a seemingly smooth organized evening on the outside. However, behind the scenes it’s often a very different story. It can be a very complex and chaotic process with many hours of planning and communication between clubs to arrange and match bouts.

Usually amateur boxing shows are put together by local boxing clubs. They have to get the event sanctioned and approved by the Provincial and National Boxing Associations governing amateur boxing. The host club will begin making phone calls and emails concerning the show, looking to match boxers. The boxers are matched according to age, weight and experience level according to the rules of amateur boxing.

As the local event nears things start to get hairy. Boxers scheduled for the event get injured or have not trained properly or a variety of other things…so now your line-up of bouts starts to change. Come fight week the local host hopes to have double the bouts booked that he/she needs. Why? Because bouts start to drop, illness, injuries, other commitments and priorities interfere. Back in the 70’s and 80’s you could match Johnny Boxer against Joe Boxer a month or two ahead of time, put their names and pictures on a poster and put out hundreds of porters and know the boxers on the poster would show up to box.

Short of a family funeral or a life threatening illness those matches were good to go. No longer is that the case except in rare instances, a reflection of our times maybe.

Now the night of the fights is here.

As I remember: Cornwall tennis in the forties and fifties

Other excellent players were George, Freddie, Nick and Eddie Kaneb, Ralph Galt, Art Fournier, Orval Tessier, Alex McAllister, Rick and Alex Kalil and others.

In mixed doubles Eddie Kaneb and Ola Newman, Charlene and Nick Kaneb, Oval Tessier and Helen Lebrecque and others won championships.

Georgette Delekatraze won an all Ontario Championship. George Kaneb won an Eastern Ontario championship.

William Fagan Senior was a Cornwall champion in the twenties and thirties.

It is worth noting that the late Donat Poirier won the over eighties Canadian Championship some sixty years after these pictures were taken.

This is a short summary of tennis information and events that happened in the Cornwall area many years ago. Hope you enjoyed it.

I did not play tennis for more than two or three years, as I much preferred softball. However, our home on York Street revolved around tennis. Some of the players came to our house to have their racquets restrung.

I remember many of the young players and the older players as well.

The picture featured in the Dulux Colourful Moments on page 30 was taken in the early fifties and shows Nick Kaneb coaching some of the younger players of the area. Nick was demonstrating the proper strokes needed to play tennis properly.

Cornwall tennis fans watched Henri Rochon play an exhibition match against Bill Fagan Junior. Henri Rochon was a top ten Canadian tennis player for thirty years and Cornwall was fortunate to have him pay us a visit.

New World Martial Arts tournament held in Cornwall

artial arts experts of all skill levels and ages descended upon Cornwall earlier this month, when Mike’s Contact Karate hosted their regional tournament at L’Ecole Heritage. On November 16, participants competed in multiple styles of martial arts, and chanbara, a popular ancient Japanese samurai form of sword fighting. Family and spectators cheered while students as young four years, and masters in the prime of their life faced off in the dojo area.

Mike’s Contact Karate operates all over eastern Ontario, with schools in Hawksebury, Morrisburg and Brockville. Soke Mike Bissonnette is the school’s master instructor, training with some of the area’s top talent in karate and other martial arts.

“We have two tournaments a year, and two seminars a year,” said master instructor, or shihan Claude Corriveau. Corriveau has trained with Bissonnette for over 16

years, and teaches at their school in Hawkesbury.

Corriveau explained that the tournament was unique compared to others, because they award all the kids who come out for the day, “All the kids have recognition regardless of who comes first or second place,” Corriveau said, meaning that kids who participate in Mike’s Contact Karate are guaranteed to walk away with a medal from whatever weight class or category they were competing in.

Eastern Ontario wins bronze in World Broomball Championships Submitted article

J

apan is a long, long way to go to play Broomball, but when you come back with a bronze medal in the world championship tournament, it all seems worthwhile.

The team, made up of players from eastern Ontario qualified for the medal round with a record of two wins, two losses and a tie. In the elimination round they lost 2-1 in a very close game and were eliminated from the gold medal game, but qualified for the consolation game and defeated the Australian Team 3-0 to win the bronze Medal.

While the players were disappointed in not winning gold, they took comfort in knowing that they are the only team that have won four straight medals at the World Broomball Championships. The team will try for gold again in 2016 in Saskatchewan, which won the bid to host the next World Broomball Championships.

aylor Beitz is a Grade 11 Holy Trinity student who has already committed to attend the University of Minnesota for a full 4 year scholarship in Kinesiology! She will be a goalkeeper for the women’s soccer team, being part of the Division 1, Big 10 Conference.

Taylor started playing soccer (and just about every other sport too) at the tender age of 4.

It’s all been uphill since then. She has worked hard both on the field and at school. She is always on the honour roll and knows the importance of academics. She played with the Coyotes, then the Blazers as a striker, and one day the goalkeeper was injured so she offered to go in nets. She has not come out of the nets since! She moved on to play for West Ottawa then Ottawa South United and last summer they finished second in the province. Still 15, (not turning 16 until late December) Taylor also plays for the Holy Trinity Falcons in sports such as soccer (obviously), basketball, volleyball, and track & field.

So between now and September 2016, Taylor will continue to get good grades, play on school teams, and play soccer for Ottawa. Her future goals are to play in the Olympics and World Cups as well as make the U20 Canadian Women’s National Team. Everyone here at Holy Trinity knows she can do it and couldn’t be prouder of her achievements!

Registration is now open for the CGHA’s developmental stream (DS) program. The program is an opportunity for young players to play fun and challenging hockey at a more enhanced level.

Starting Wednesday January 14th

These Gentle Yoga classes will focus on breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, for health and relaxation. Hatha yoga focuses on stretching and aligning the body, and helps with the promotion of balance and flexibility. For the 8 weeks we will explore different postures, stretches and relaxation techniques. Class is led by Farhana Meghji, who has over 10 years experience teaching yoga.

Stroller Babes Fitness Returning 2015

Stroller Babes focuses on intervals of power walking and running with functional strength training, followed by postnatal specific core work and flexibility. This course is led by Pre & Post-Natal Fitness Specialist Jenny Irvine. Classes take place every Monday and Wednesday morning at the Benson Centre. Program is now eight weeks long. Monday and Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m.

Adult Badminton

This programs goal is strictly for enjoyment. It will also provide participants with the opportunity to play games with other participants of varying skills. Please Note: No instruction is provided and birdies and racquets are required. Four courts will be set-up each week. Tuesday and Friday evenings at 8:00 p.m.

Adult Table Tennis Monday Evenings

Join other ping pong players in weekly games and tournaments. Practice and improve your skills in a fun and recreational setting. All level of players welcome. Walking, Jogging and Running

Stay safe this winter by walking, jogging and running in our climate controlled Fieldhouse.

The walking track is available during non-event times. The walking track is generally open for walkers on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., but please note some hours may be restricted due to private rentals.

Senior Skating

The free skating program runs on Mondays from 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and on Fridays from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. The Senior Skate is compliments of the City of Cornwall.

Family Stick & Puck Skates

The Stick & Puck program is designed to enable skaters in full hockey gear, the opportunity to work on passing, puck control and skating drills. An adult or coach must accompany all youth on the ice (Adult to Child ratio: 1 to 2). Youth ages 5 – 14. Full hockey equipment required for all youth. he Vanier Cup is to Canadian University Football what the Grey Cup is to the Canadian Football League (CFL).

It signifies excellence, confirms that you have won all the games that mattered, and that you are indeed a champion. This year marks the Cup’s 50th anniversary.

This year the Vanier Cup was played at Percival Molson Stadium in Montreal on Saturday, November 29, and it will feature the number two-ranked Montreal Carabins and the number threeranked McMaster Marauders.

Montreal won the right to play in the Vanier Cup by virtue of their 29-26 victory over the Manitoba Bisons in the Utek Bowl, which was played on Saturday, November 22. It will be the first Vanier Cup appearance for the Carabins.

Sports Panel

The World Junior Hockey Championships return to Canada this December with games being split between Montreal and Toronto. The tournament has become a bit of a holiday ritual for many Canadians, with the initial round getting underway on Boxing Day, December 26. Every year there is a new crop of potential NHL’ers showing what they can do. Will you be watching the games this year, and if so, what (or who) will you be looking for?

I had the privilege in 2009 of covering the tournament, which was held in Ottawa, for the Canadian Press, and the opportunity to speak with such future stars as Erik Karlsson, Canadian Press Correspondent John Tavares and P.K. Subban.

Its fun to look back and see how even then these players, and many others displayed the qualities that let you know they were going to be something special.

It is pretty much a given this year that “everyone” will be watching Connor McDavid, provided his broken hand heals in time. For the most part, I don’t find that as many names jump out at me as in some years and that’s okay. A team can succeed on the back of nameless players, who make a name for themselves by showing what they can do on the world stage, much like Curtis Lazar did last year.

More importantly though, the team needs to have a successful run. Following a string of five consecutive gold medal wins, Canada has only two silver and a bronze to show for the past five years and zilch in the past two. It’s time to get the program back on track.

I will definitely be watching the World Juniors again this year, as it has become part of a tradition within our family. Young men Minor Hockey Coach playing for their country and pride while also trying to show their skills to future employers and fans of the game, I will be interested in watching Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel as they are considered to be franchise prospects, but, I will enjoy watching the teams as a whole and their passion for the sport. It is a special moment in those young men’s lives and the top of their minor and junior careers and should be enjoyed by all. It celebrates the spirit of the game and the youth that play it.

My Christmas wish list

Dean Santa, My name is David. I am 42 years old living in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.

I understand it’s your busy season and you’re down to crunch time so I thank you for taking the time to read my letter to you.

One of the things I’m really hoping to happen this Christmas and beyond is a long winning streak for our hometown Cornwall Colts. They’ve been great on home ice so far this year and if they can string together a long winning streak, they can catch those dastardly Carleton Place Canadians, not only in the CCHL but as a top Junior A team in all of Canada. Building good momentum heading into the Fred Page Cup would play into the Colts favour as Cornwall hosts the Eastern Canadian Championships April 29th-May 3rd.

Another item on my wish list has to do with local athletes getting the recognition they deserve. I’m specifically talking about the La Citadelle Patriotes Senior Girls Basketball Team. They not only dominated locally but they won the OFSSA Championship making them the best in all of Ontario!

A special mention has to go to the organizers of the tournament, which was hosted at Rothwell-Osnabruck in Ingleside.

And finally, I’m leaving you three chocolate chip cookies and a glass of chocolate milk – just like you requested in last year’s letter to me!

I enjoy the World Juniors and plan to watch whenever time permits. Like many people, I will be looking forward to seeing Connor McDavid, if he receives medical clearance to

play. Other than that I will view it as an opportunity to learn a few things about some future NHL’ers, as many of them will make that transition in the next few years.

At present there are almost 400 players in the National Hockey League who have, at one time, represented their country in the World Junior Tournament. It will be interesting to see how good Canada’s depth is as several players that are eligible such as Curtis Lazar, Jonathan Drouin, Bo Horvath, and Aaron Ekblad have stuck with their respective NHL teams.

We should still be able to ice a strong, competitive team that is capable of keeping some of those medals here in Canada.

T

he Seaway Valley Rapids Minor Atom A took a break from regular season play to travel to Pickering to participate in the Pickering Panthers “AA” hockey tournament over the November 7th weekend.

The Rapids opened round robin tournament with a game against the Oshawa Generals. Despite traveling that morning, the Rapids came out strong against the Generals and won 6-0 with Tristan Shoniker earning the shutout. Carey Terrance, Jr. opened the scoring in the first period of play with two unassisted goals.

In the second period, Carson Martin connected on a pass from James Sullivan. During the third period, Braxton D’alessio scored on a pass from Jett Jock. Rylan Adams, who was the player of the game, got the last goal on an assist from Terrance.

For the team’s second outing they faced the Belleville Bulls and the Rapids were victorious again by a score of 11-0 with Connor Fox earning the shutout. Terrance got the scoring underway on an assist from Trysen Sunday. Terrance got a hat trick plus one more for good measure. Martin, Jock with two goals, Ethan Montroy, Sullivan, and Sunday each scored and notching assists were Sunday, Sullivan McCarthy, Adams, Jonah Ashby, Martin, and Sunday. Jett Jock was named the player of the game.

the Ajax Knights and walked away with a 6-1 win. Terrance opened the scoring in the first, unassisted, followed by Sunday with two goals in the second. In the third period, Jonah Ashby scored unassisted followed by Terrance assisted by Sunday and Adams. Rounding out the third was Marco McCarthy, who scored on a pass from Sunday.

McCarthy was the player of the game.

For the final game of the round robin the Rapids faced the Clarington Toros and won 5-1 with defenseman Antoine Lafrance being named the player of the game. Terrance once again got the team rolling with two points in the first period. That was followed in the second by Sunday and in the third by Martin and Jock.

Assists went to D’alessio, Adams, Montroy, and Sullivan.

Generals for the tournament semifinal. The Generals scored first and it was the first time in the tournament that the Rapids fell behind. The team shook off its nerves with Martin scoring on a pass from Sullivan.

The Generals quickly went up again by one point. Going into the second period, the team was down by one, Martin scored to even it up. The Generals scored again, but Terrance with an assist from Montroy evened it up. Terrance then got the goahead goal with Jock getting the insurance goal while D’alessio added an empty-netter for a final score of 6-3.

The team returned to regular season play on Friday, November 14, at home in a game against the Cumberland Grads. It was the teams’ first meeting of the season and it was hotly contested. The Grads scored early in the first period, but Carey Terrance, Jr. evened the scored on a breakaway. During the second period, the Grads went up again, but Jett Jock on an assist from Jacob Anderson tied it up. Both teams were unable to capitalize on power plays with the Rapids failing despite six tries and the Grads missing an opportunity on three tries.

The Rapids played again at home on Saturday against the Kanata Blazers. The game remained scoreless after the first period. The boys were able to shake off the tie and got rolling in the second period.

Ethan Montroy opened the scoring on an assist from Rylan Adams.

Carey Terrance, Jr. followed it up on a breakaway then scored a shorthanded goal. In the third period with the score of 3-0, Montroy connected on a pass from Carson Martin. Not to be outdone, Jett Jock scored another short-handed goal on a pass from defenseman Antoine Lafrance. The last goal went to Marco McCarthy on an assist from Montroy for a final score of 6-0. Connor Fox earned the shutout between the pipes.

There’s no age limit on staying fit

A

s we age, staying active, both mentally and physically is something that requires a bit more of an effort. For some, getting up and walking down the street can feel like a marathon. Cathy Bourgon is a fitness instructor for the Seaway Seniors Citizen Centre, where she helps men and women get up and work out. “The administrator of the Seaway Seniors Centre approached me and asked if I would be interested in starting a group fitness class at the Centre,” says Bourgon. “Realizing there was a need to get senior citizens moving and healthy, I quickly accepted the position and thus the journey began of my friendship with this fantastic group of people.”

Many people need inspiration to get up and move. For Bourgon, the sight of the elderly men and women actually moving is all she needs.

“Seeing them active and healthy and always trying their best to maintain their health, it motivates me to guide them and help them socialize and have fun!” she says. “In the end, having fun is the key to successful active living.”

Bourgon’s own active lifestyle isn’t something new. Since she was young, fitness and working out has been her passion. “I got a membership at the first gym in Cornwall to open, ‘Aerobics and Iron’ and continued

my active lifestyle,” she says. It was her exercise ethic that made her realize it could benefit others as well. “I realized quickly that helping others to achieve the same active lifestyle would be rewarding for me also, so I made the decision to become a Personal Trainer/Group Fitness Instructor.”

At nine in the morning, four out of the five days a week, Bourgon heads to the Seniors Centre, and begins her classes. She creates different programs for different people, since some choose to participate differently. “There are some classes aimed more at seniors looking to challenge themselves, and other classes aimed at an overall fitness for all levels of fitness,” says Bourgon.

“I focus each class on strengthening, flexibility, balance and some light cardio for the heart.”

But exercise isn’t Bourgon’s only area of expertise; she also has a fondness for racing, including the Kingston Twosome race, which is made up of groups of two: one man, one woman. “The age of both team members is added up and that equals the age category for you to race in. At the end of the race, both completed race times are added up and that is the overall time for your team,” explains Bourgon. “My race partner for three years was Allan Savage, age 70 years old, and I was 46 years old the first race we completed. That

put us in the 110+ age category, which we both thought was pretty exciting.” She says they almost hit first twice. “The first two years we missed out on first place by seconds, so the third year we were determined to place, and we did! We were very pleased!”

individuals. For her, this was not a new experience. “I had previously done Dragon Boat Races for two years in Ottawa,” she says.

How she decided to participate in the race came up during one of her senior exercises. “Teaching my seniors class one morning, we were doing an exercise that mimicked rowing a boat, and I was talking about my experience in Ottawa, and they all said, “We should do that!” That was the beginning, and within no time a team was gathered and we began training for the big race.” Bourgon found the experience a great way for everyone to connect outside of her classes. “The experience brought the class closer together as we got to know each other outside of the fitness classes,” she says. However, funding is the only reason this isn’t being done more often. “We all thoroughly enjoyed the race, and would love to do it again, but it was a lot of money to raise as the registration fee was $700. The Seniors Centre is a non-profit organization, and a lot of seniors are on a fixed income, so to do this again it would once again require raising funds for the Sensational Seniors Race Team.”

While she loves helping seniors work out their minds and bodies, Bourgon has no shortage of ways to stay sharp herself. “My main passion outside of teaching is my Continued on page 18

Continued from page 16 triathlon training,” she says. “I was always amazed as a young teenager watching the numerous triathletes on television, and thinking it would be an amazing accomplishment to do that one day, but never thinking I would. That was until I heard about the Cornwall Multisport Club eight years ago, and became a member and completed my first event; a TryA-Tri. Since then I have completed numerous running races (5km, 10km, half marathons), as well as sprint & Olympic Triathlons.”

Setting goals is a great way to find motivation, and Bourgon she already had something in mind as to what race she wanted to defeat next, “I set a goal for when I turned 50 years old to train and complete the next step up from Olympic Triathlon, being a Half-Ironman distance event.” she says. “Through the Cornwall Multisport Club, I met my fantastic triathlon coach, Tanya Deeks. She pushed me and challenged me with my swimming, biking and running, and in September 2014 I completed the Niagara Falls Barrel Man Half Iron distance event.”

Bourgon, through determination and

help of friends and coaches, beat her goal. But she is very humble, and quickly points to the people she says made it possible. “This would not have been possible without the fantastic support, encouragement and motivation that I receive from the members and friends of the Cornwall Multisport Club.”

When asked what advice Bourgon can give to those already living an active lifestyle, even in the later years, she advises to get out and get others moving. “If someone is older and they already live a healthy, clean lifestyle then I would encourage them to continue and perhaps help others around them.”

She also has some advice for those who think it’s too late for them. “I would tell them that it is never too late to start, no matter your age or abilities,” says Bourgon. “Health for seniors is not all about the physical health, it also needs to incorporate mental health, and more importantly the ‘social aspect,’ meaning communicating and interacting with other people who are having fun and living a healthy, active lifestyle. I believe success comes from incorporating the mind, body and spirit!”

W

hen Sports Energy caught up to Carly McPhail, she had just completed playing into two basketball games and had just arrived at the Seaway Karate class where she both teaches and learns. She is, to say the least, a busy young woman with a very bright future.

Currently in her final year of high school at Rothwell-Osnabruck in Ingleside, she is enjoying being a part of a very successful Lancers senior girls basketball team and is looking forward to participating in the OFSSA “A” championship tournament, which being hosted by RO November 2022, 2014.

When she isn’t playing basketball, Carly’s other love is Karate, and she has been a member of the Seaway Karate Club for seven years. She was awarded her black belt after passing eleven katas at the World Kobuto Confederation, and is recognized as a Sensei, teaching at many of the different age levels that make up the club. Her strength, according to Sensei Jim Riddell, is in her kicking, and she has (deservedly) become a role model for many of the younger students in the class.

Carly was inducted this year into the South Stormont Sports Hall of Fame (student category.)

The Border League included the towns of Vankleek Hill, Hawkesbury, Winchester, Casselman, Cornwall, Finch, Russell, and Metcalf. DiCola’s teammates included Gibby Wilson, Marcel Lemieux, Kenny Baker and Raymond Dewar who are all now deceased.

C

hico DiCola grew up playing various team sports in the Cornwall area. He played outside linebacker for Cornwall Collegiate Vocational School (CCVS). After his high school career was over it did not end his career in sports or football.

He continued playing football for various leagues and teams throughout the 1960s. DiCola played for Emard’s Football team, which was part of the Quebec Senior League. Although the team was not very successful he enjoyed his time with them. The reason for Montreal’s success? “(We played) against teams from Montreal which recruited exAlouettes players,” said DiCola.

After the team switched owners they became the Cornwall Clippers and had more success since it, according to DiCola, recruited ex-CFL players from the Ottawa Rough Riders.

DiCola also played box lacrosse as part of the Senior League for Cornwall. During the 1950s, lacrosse was not offered at the high school level so he played in a senior men’s league. The Cornwall team played teams from across eastern Ontario including Alexandria, and even played some New York teams from Hogansburg, and Onondaga.

The competition was pretty fierce. “CFL players would play lacrosse in the summer to stay in shape for football,” said DiCola,

After his playing days were over, Chico remained involved in local amateur sports. He coached throughout the 1970’s for the Optimist Minor Football League.

The league started for kids under 15 and eventually included different age groups. At one time, there were eight teams of kids 12 and under and four teams of kids between the ages of 12-15.

Chico DiCola loved sport and has been involved in many sports, in many ways for his entire life.

After that league ended, Cornwall had a team called the Cornwall Clippers, which Chico coached. The team’s manager was Ed Lumley and it was part of the Quebec Junior Football League.

Chico helped develop some good players with that team. Some of his players played for Canadian universities and he coached Dave Still who later played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Even though his playing and coaching days are over, Chico remains active. He has run several marathons in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto. He enjoys crosscountry skiing and alpine skiing with his wife and they often travel to ski and love Whiteface, Titus, and Mont Ste. Anne.

Annual clean-up day at The Summerstown Forest Submitted article

ummerstown – More than 20 members and friends attended the annual clean-up day organized by the Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) this past Saturday, Nov. 22.

In spite of the cold temperature to start with, the volunteers were upbeat and eager to tackle the work to be done, and motivated by the snow that had fallen in the days prior the event. “I am here to express my thanks to those who look after the trails. I appreciate the closeness and convenience of the trails to Cornwall. I come here often all winter long and cross-country ski or snowshoe whenever I come here,” said FOTST member Glenna Redmond.

Because of the work done in previous years and the general awareness by the general population as to the importance of this recreational site for the community, there is less garbage and other debris to be found on the trails and in and around the parking lot. Consequently, rather than picking up garbage as in previous years and also because of the snow cover, most of the volunteers were put to work

on the trails, making them ready for the coming season, which is a much better use of volunteer hours.

In addition to clearing dead branches and fallen trees on the 20 plus kilometres of cross country ski and snowshoe trails, the volunteers also did regular maintenance work, in the form of cutting back the small branches and vegetation that grows back every year. OFSAA Girls’s “A” basketball a resounding success

T

here is a lot of behind-the-scenes work involved in successfully hosting a provincial tournament such as the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) Girls’ “A” Basketball championship. No one is probably any happier than the organizers when the planning and prepping part is complete and the games actually get underway.

Rothwell-Osnabruck (RO) located in Ingleside successfully completed the task last month, and from all accounts the event was deserving of two thumbs up.

Bob Thompson, one of the coaches of the RO team, says the feedback he received was all positive. “ I

spoke with a number of people who have been to OFSAA before,” says Thompson, “and they said our banquet was the best they had been to.”

Despite weather issues in some parts of the province, all the teams arrived in good condition and on time. The facilities, both at RO and in Cornwall at T.R. Leger functioned as expected, the cheering crowds did their part, and the live stream of the tournament games went off almost completely without a hitch. It was an example of how a small group, with a little help from their friends, can accomplish big things.

he Cornwall girls Bantam B Typhoons have now won gold in backto-back tournaments, as a result of taking home the golden hardware at the 32nd Annual Kanata Girls Hockey Association competitive tournament.

Cornwall opened the tournament with a 4-0 win against the MRO Eagles from Outremont, Quebec and followed it up with a 9-0 win against a second team from Front row: Sydney Seymour, Alicia Hartholt, Eryn Morgan, Taylor Outremont.

Sharks make it to semi-finals at Humber Invitational

T

he 2013-14 Challenge Cup Champions, SLC-Cornwall Sharks women’s hockey team, travelled to Toronto on November 20th for the first invitational of the 2014-15 Ontario Colleges Committee on Campus Recreation (OCCCR) season.

Last year, the Sharks finished second overall in all four regular season invitationals, but saved their best performance for the Challenge Cup, where the girls defeated Fanshawe College in the Semifinals and won 10 in a thrilling overtime championship game against Humber College, to capture their first Challenge Cup Championship in program history.

Mamakwa, scored her third goal of the tournament, and opened the scoring for the Sharks. The Falcons quickly responded with a goal of their own to tie the game at one.

After Sarah Hutchingame score her first goal of the season late in the first period, Henderson (3) and Lortie (2) added a goal each to give the Sharks a 4-1 lead. Fanshawe scored once in the second and once in the third, but could not overcome the deficit.

Alas, all good things must come to an end, and so it did for the Sharks, with a 2-1 loss to Wilfred-Laurier University-Brantford. Both teams played a scoreless first period but in the second, the Golden Hawks scored on the power play. On the next faceoff,

the Hawks won the draw, skated into the offensive zone and scored again to go up 2-0. The goals came just 15 seconds apart .

With their net empty and with just 16 seconds left, the Sharks were finally able to get the puck past the Golden-Hawks goalie, thanks to Sutton. But with just 16 seconds, there was not enough time on the clock to create a scoring chance and finish the comeback.

“This was a tough one to lose,” said Shark coach, Sean Boulerice. “The girls played so well. We had so many chances to score. We hit posts, missed tap in goals, and were robbed several times by their (Laurier-Brantford’s) goalie.”

Cornwall Mosquito Wildcats win championship

I

t has been five years since the Cornwall Mosquito Wildcats have ended their fall season victorious.

However, with a combination of dedication, hard work, and coaching, the Commercial Truck Repair Wildcat Mosquitoes this year came home with the NCAFA “B” Cup championship, a feat that has left the Cornwall Wildcats, coaches, parents and football community very proud.

Co-head coaches, David Gould and Richard Keenan, led the team of 11 and 12-year olds, comprised of players from all over S.D.&G. The commitment of the players and their parents was evident in solid attendance and hard work during their twice-weekly practices and weekly games, which took place in and around the Ottawa area.

The season started off a bit shaky, with a disappointing loss to the Bell Warriors, and a subsequent loss to the Cumberland Panthers (who went on to win the NCAFA “A” The Cornwall Mosquito Wildcats had a lot to celebrate after they capture the NCAFA “B” Cup championship Cup championship). The Mosquitos by defeating the Orleans Bengals 20-8.

Rookie of the Month LANDON BROWNLEE

Landon is an athlete who enjoys all sports but his favourites are Hockey, Lacrosse and Baseball. He currently plays center for the Delaney Bus Lines Major Atom AA Rapids hockey club where he is fourth in team scoring. This is Landon’s third year playing for the Rapids and he thoroughly enjoys the challenge that AA hockey presents. Landon started playing hockey when he was 3 years old.

That was when his sister Makenna started in IP and there was no way she was going on the ice without him. Landon completed 3 years of IP and one year of Novice with the NGS Minor Hockey Association before making the jump to Seaway Valley. During the spring and summer months Landon stays active playing lacrosse with the Cornwall Celtics and baseball with the Monkland Monkeys who are three time Cornwall House League Baseball Champions. Landon also enjoyed his time playing for the Cornwall River Rats and looks forward to this spring when he hopes to crack the Celtic’s and River Rat’s lineups once again. When Landon is not refining his athletic skills he can be found practicing his drumming as he hopes to become a member of the Glengarry Pipe band one day.

rallied in Week three though, with a win over the Brockville Buccaneers at the Wildcats’ home opener. Weeks four and five followed suit with wins over the Orleans Bengals and Gloucester South Raiders. A loss in Week six refocused coaches and players, and the team went on to win again in Week seven against the East Ottawa Generals. The final game of regular season was a disappointing loss for the Wildcats against the South Ottawa Mustangs.

Throughout the regular season, Eric and Patrick Cumberbatch led the team in touchdowns and field goals, giving quarterback Brody Fairbairn the luxury of multiple offensive options. In addition to the defense’s two shutouts, defensive players Ethan Da Silva, Robbie Rivard and Jared McLeod scored touchdowns for the Wildcats.

Offensive lineman, Kurtis Bellemore, added an additional touchdown to the team’s total, helping the team as it ended the regular season 4-4.

Quarterfinal action saw the Commercial Truck Repair Mosquito Wildcats play against the thirdseeded west division, Nepean

Eagles, who won by a score of 5236. The Cornwall team went on to the “B” Cup semi-finals and beat the Myers’ Riders, 30-16. This led the Mosquitoes to play the Orleans Bengals for the final game of the championship.

The final game had the crowd on the edge of its seat. In the fourth game of the regular season, the Wildcats beat the Bengals, 2820. In the game for the cup, Eric Cumberbatch scored the Wildcats first touchdown. The score remained 6-0 until the third quarter, when a Bengals player intercepted a pass and scored a touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion. It was not until the fourth quarter that the Cornwall Wildcats were able to score again on a touchdown by Kurtis Bellemore.

To send home the message that the Wildcats wanted to go home as “B” Cup champions, Eric Cumberbatch followed up his first touchdown of the game with the final touchdown.

His brother, Patrick, kicked the conversion, giving the Wildcats the NCAFA “B” cup championship against the Bengals, 20-8.

The Ottawa 10K gets the Gold!

rganizers of the Ottawa 10K, one of the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend’s signature events, have announced they have been awarded the prestigious International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) Gold label standard for the race. The Ottawa 10K is the first road race in Canada, and the fourth 10K in the world, to receive the Gold label.

“The IAAF Gold label takes the Ottawa 10K to a new level,” said John Halvorsen, president of Run Ottawa and race director of the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.

“This really puts Ottawa on the map as a destination for amateur and elite runners looking for a worldclass running experience.”

The Gold label - the highest standard awarded by the international governing body for running - signifies that a race has met IAAF’s stringent criteria on the caliber of the elite field, the breadth of media coverage and logistical execution of the race.

The Ottawa 10K was also recently announced as the venue for the 2015 Canadian 10K Championships.

“With the Gold label and the Canadian 10K championships, I expect 2015 to be a banner year for our 10K event,” said Manny Rodrigues, elite athlete coordinator, Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.

“We’ll be attracting even faster runners and setting new records.”

“We all strive for excellence, congratulations to John, Manny and the team at Run Ottawa for achieving the highest honour from the international governing body,” said Rob Guy, chief executive officer, Athletics Canada. “Hosting the Canadian 10K Championships as part of an IAAF Gold label event is very exciting.”

Next year, organizers will be looking to also upgrade the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon from a Silver label to a Gold label status.

The 30th running of the Ottawa 10K will be held Saturday, May 23, 2015 as part of the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend.

ith a renewed focus, the Delaney Bus Lines Seaway Valley Major Atoms have taken stock of their individual and team progress this year following a successful tournament in Pickering that saw them reach the semi-finals.

The tourney opener saw the Rapids face a familiar foe, the Rideau St. Lawrence Kings. Fresh from defeat a week earlier in league play, the Kings played a determined game opening the scoring half way through the first period. The Rapids responded with Dominic Martin netting one, assisted

by Tristan Miron.

The Rapids would fight back to tie

the game twice in the third period with goals by Tyler Sauvé and Nolan MacMillan. MacMillan also added a helper along with Landon Brownlee.

The Betty Bread / Lanthier player of the game was Connor Carriere.

The Rapids found their stride in the second matchup against Timmins winning 3-1. Brownlee netted a pair with helpers from Roenick Jodoin, Connor Macdonald, and Zack Speck-Meek while Martin put one in off the pass from Thomas Pasco.

Brownlee’s contributions earned him the Cornwall Flowers player of the game.

Day two started with the West Hill GoldenHawks. Again, the Rapids controlled the game with plenty of

practice on the powerplay thanks to the undisciplined play of the Goldenhawks. Putting, the ‘pass’ in Pasco, Thomas teamed up with Martin again while Macdonald netted one with an assist by Jake Esdale and provided a helper for Jodoin.

Final score Rapids 3, Goldenhawks 0. The D&R Welding player of the game was earned by Zayne Pitblado who put forth a solid effort at both ends of the rink.

With their sights set on the semis, the Delaney Bus Lines Rapids maintained their team play downing the Pickering Panthers in game four.

Speck-Meek and Macdonald worked together dishing one to Jodoin who lit the red light for the first goal of the game. MacMillan took matters

into his own hands at the end of the first with a great individual effort for goal two. The final goal was a beautiful passing play with Brownlee chipping in from Macdonald and Jodoin who was named the player of the game.

In the semi-final match-up against Uxbridge, the Rapids struggled to get on the board in what was a sluggish affair. Uxbridge took the game 3-0.

Returning home with a feeling of unfinished business, the Rapids immediately regrouped, reflected and agreed that they have indeed been climbing the mountain. In a show of solidarity the team committed to getting to the next level, to work together, to keep climbing.
