The photography series documents the artist home in Barcelona from his childhood, now uninhabited for thirty years. The images portray each of the rooms of the house from an intimate and nostalgic perspective: gone by memories and experiences emerge from the past.

Time is deposited silently over the left objects, furniture and works of art. Neglected and forgotten, family memories reverberate through light and colour that once took place.

“I remember the light at noonday. It entered from the right side of the room. The afternoons were long and had a warm shade, mainly because the room was facing west. Perhaps that’s the reason why my spatial sense is so sharp. Memories of my childhood being projected in an uninhabited space with dust accumulated for years.

The sun heated the big living room like a greenhouse. Sundays used to be summer, even in the coldest winter. Now it looks cold, only dimly lighted by the sunlight, filtered through fatigued closed blinds.

Sounds of jazz and bossa nova, rhythms from the 50s and 60s, still reverberate in the blurry space, especially those by Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto.

I feel a faded nostalgia. This place was my home only at times. A disrupt home when my parents traveled caused continuous temporary moves to my grandparents’ house. However, the return back home was always nice.

For many years the seasons were back and forth, when afternoons after school were dreamy moments of childhood and adolescence. A period affected by historical changes during the progress of a country that was forging a new democracy. Rooms and hallways were witnesses of time passing. Longings frozen in mental images, portrayed by the beauty of vague memories, like the shadow of a smile.

Going back to my roots and briefly find these remote feelings. Lucky to recharge my soul, but also suffer the sad disappointment of confronting something lost, abandoned, forgotten.”

Recuerdo la luz del mediodía. Siempre llegaba por el lado derecho del salón. Las tardes tenían un tono cálido y eran largas, debido a que la estancia estaba orientada hacia poniente. Quizá por ese motivo mi sentido espacial es tan agudo. Memorias de infancia que se proyectan en un espacio deshabitado con polvo acumulado durante años.

Los domingos solían ser verano, aun en el más frio invierno. El sol calentaba ese gran salón, como si fuera un invernadero. Ahora parece frio, tan solo iluminado tenuemente por rayos de luz que se cuelan por las persianas, bajadas pero dilatadas por el paso del tiempo. En el espacio despojado de su nitidez reverberan los sonidos del tocadiscos con ritmos de jazz de los años 50 y una dulce bossa nova de los 60, en especial de Stan Getz y Astrud Gilberto.

Siento una nostalgia difuminada, tal vez porque fue mi casa a ratos. Un hogar interrumpido cuando mis padres viajaban. Continuas mudanzas pasajeras a casa de mis abuelos. Sin embargo, el retorno a ese lugar siempre era agradable.

Fueron temporadas salpicadas durante muchos años. Tardes después del colegio y momentos de ensoñación durante mi infancia y adolescencia. Un periodo lleno de vivencias marcadas por cambios históricos y progresos de un país que estrenaba la democracia.

Habitaciones, pasillos y rincones testigos de otro tiempo pasado. Anhelos detenidos en la memoria, retratados con la belleza de su vago recuerdo, como la sombra de una sonrisa.

Volver otra vez significa vivir brevemente lo lejano. Es una suerte poder presenciarse allí, aunque también supone sufrir el triste desencanto de confrontar algo ya perdido, abandonado, olvidado.

MIGUEL SOLER-ROIG BIO

He studied at the Art School of Basel. He subsequently completed a Master of Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. After working in New York, he returned to Spain and did a Masters in Art in Photography at the European Institute of Design in Madrid (IED), and international photography workshops.
