INTRODUCTION

My name is Blake Martin and I decided to take ARTS 102 because I wanted more practice in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Adobe Illustrator. This class has significanlty improved my skills in all the apps listed previously and I think it will benefit my future projects I have planned.

I am an Art Studio major and intend to keep it that way throughout all of college. I really enjoy art and creating things that people have never seen. It is something I want to do for my future. Throughout this process book I intend to add some of my artwork that I’ve created over the years to show more of what I can do and what I’ve done before.

SIX WORD STORIES

My Process

The Six Word Stories project was our first project assigned to us in this class. It was a fun and helpful experience, I think it got me warmed up again in photoshop since I haven’t used it since junior year of highschool.

Image #1

I chose the first image because I thought it matched the words perfectly. You see a man and a women sitting at a table with ambient lighting and it almost seens like she is not interested in him because she is leaning away as he leans in. An interesting detail are the people in the background , they seem more engaged with eachother. They are close and look like they both care about what’s on the phone the man is holding.

Image #2

The second Image I decided to pick is of a women stumbling and turning in bed. I wanted to use this image because I thought it gave a good example of someone that is having problems sleeping at night. If you’ve ever had a rough time sleeping and just can’t seem to find the right position to lay down and be comfortable you tend to keep tossing and turning in bed for hours until you eventually fall asleep. The quote goes along with this as well since it’s about laying down on a pillow but not sleeping.

Extra Details -

I wanted the wording to go top to bottom to follow the form of the woman and the word sleeping to be wavy to match her laying down.

SIX WORD STORIES

Process Details

The Process

While creating both of these six word stories I was thinking about composition and color scheme. I wanted to really match the feel of the image in the first image with the feel of the typog raphy and the color of the text. This is why I decided to make the wording a yellow tone. I think making it yellow adds to the overall feel of the image and combines everything as a whole. We only started this project by creating a word map after we found a six word story we wanted to do. This really made us think and be creative about how we approached this project.

Typography

The typography was a very important factor in this project. Making changes to each word can influence the piece a lot. I liked adding a different feel to at least one word in both images. The way a simple change to the coloring or shape of the text can make everything feel different is really interesting to me so that’s why I tried to incorporate that into both of my iamges.

7

TYPOGRAPHIC ABSTRACTION

Typographic Abstraction was the second project we did in this class. The point of it was to be as creative as possible with only three letters of your choice. I wanted to do a different style with every piece I did. It was a very interesting project to do since we were so limited with the options we got. It all depends on what type face you pick and how you place and turn each letter you decided to choose. I decided to do the first piece as a modern typeface and combine and merge some of the letters to create

a more unqiue feel. The second piece on the next page on the top is a piece that I wanted to make feel like a modern but very loud design and make it simple at the same time. The next piece I wanted to make it feel flowy and wavy. I wanted the design to be diferernt than the others so I decided to put the L inside the D and have the U balance out the piece so I put it on the bottom right of the D and made it go toward the bottom of the piece.

Font Type

For the first font type I decided to use Brush Script MT Italic . The different font sizes I used were 311 pt for the letter D, 123 pt for the letter L, and 307 pt for the letter U.

For the second image I decided to use the Copperplate font. I used 260 pt size for the letter G, 238 pt for W, 256 pt for P, 174 pt for the letter W.

For the third and last image I used the Times font. I did 259 pt for the letter b, 276 pt for N, and 251 pt for the letter O.

POSTER DESIGN

This is project 3, this project was about picking a quote that was on a sheet with a bunch of other quotes and creating a poster for it. It was important to create a poster that wasn’t controversial and can be understood easily. I liked this project because we had a lot of freedom to create what we invisioned and saw in these certain quotes. I decided to create a poster that would go from the top to the bottom and put an image of something that represents what that chunk of words is saying. For example I wanted Real Change to have the earth because real change would be something that impacted the whole world and changed things for the greater good. For enduring change I wanted to put someone holding a protest sign because when I think of enduring change I think of all the people that want and need change in society and are willing to fight and protest for it. For the last

chunk of words I wanted to put it in a clock because the saying “happens one step at a time” is a saying I have heard a lot in my life and everytime i heard it I always thought of a clock and how it never stops and never will no matter if you take advantage of time or don’t, time will always keep going no matter what.

Poster Design Process & Detail

The Process

The poster project was a fun process. First I picked my quote and chose what I did because I thought I could do a cool poster design with it and the quote had a good mean ing behind it. First I started with a series of sketches and designs and ended up picking one and refining it. I decided I wanted to draw the charatcer holding the sign and every thing elese would be from the interenet.

The Details

I wanted to keep everything simple and legible on this poster. If I could do it different I would probabley do al the fonts hand drawn to add more style and interest. I do like the fonts I chose because I feel like they are simple but make sense with the words.

CHARACTER LOGOMARKS

WALL E

Project 4

Character Logomarks was our fourth project in this class. This project was all about picking one of your favorite movies and creating a logo mark for two of the characters in the movie. If you decided to pick a movie that’s already animated you would need to be more creative for what your logomark would be considering the characters and movie is already in an animated form. I decided to take this risk and pick Wall-E because it was the first movie I thought of and I reme, ber enjoying it as a kid. For this project you needed to do a logo in color and the same logo in black and white. I decided

to do the boot and plant for Wall-E because it represents an imporatnat message and moment in the movie that I thought would fit since it’s not just Wall-Es eyes and his name as the logo. For Eve I decided to do the logo mark that appears on her once her and Wall-E find the plant which resembles life can return back to this planet. I liked my final result be cause both of these logo represent the same thing but tell a different story. Wall-E is a trash pickup robot and I think my logo resembles his style and his type of robot. For Eve I think I represented her well becuase she is a more advanced robot and is very clean and sharp.

Character Logomarks Process & Details

The Process

The process for this project was the same as the poster design project. We started with a sheet of thumbnail framed paper and had to fill them with some designs we thought could work with the character we picked. I could come up with a good bit for Wall-E but I had more trouble with com ing up with a lot for Eve. I really liked the two I made with stars but decided the angle would be too weird to make for a logo mark. I didn’t really want to have shading for my logo so I decided to do my final design once I started working on the project.

The Details

The details on this project were to create a logo to represent each character. I created the mood boards as seen on the left page to get some ideas flowing and see what I could work with. It has been a long time since I saw the movie so looking at images really helped me come up with the final designs I chose. I am satisfied with what I came up with but if I could change anything it would be to add shading and a bit more detail to the boot for Wall-E.

SYNTAX & SEMANTICS

This was project 5 and our final project in the class before we started working on our process books for the final. This project was different than the other project we did because it wasn’t mainly about the design of the project but what the information in the project had. We were instructed to pick a product and find four different types of that shoe and give a syntax, semantics: denotation, semantics: expression, semantics: connotation, and presence for each one.

Syntax: -

The syntax is the visual elements & relationships that product has. For example I decided to do shoes for this project. For my syntax I described the shoe in the design and materials that were used.

Semantics: Denotation -

The semantics expression is about going from vague to spe cific in what the product is. For example I went from shoe to Off White Nike Dunk in my first shoe. You go from what the product is to what the product specifically is.

Semantics: ConnotationConnotation is the associations related to that product. This can be where it was manufactured and made or it could be the group of clothing it’s associated with. For ex ample on the second shoe it is made for teens and is based in Boston, MA.

PresencePresence is all about where the product would look out of place or in place in. For example the business shoe would look out of place in a highschool or in a nature setting. On the other hand it would look in place and have little contrast to a place such as a business building or a fancy street in a city.

Semantics: ExpressionSemantics expression is about describing what the prod uct is by telling what kind of age this product relates to or is designed for. It can also be used to give off the vibe that the product is meant for. For example the hiking shoe on the end is rough, tough, durable, and meant for the

FINAL STATEMENTS

This course was very beneficial for me. I’m glad I got to work in a lot of different softwares and improve my skill in all of them. I do like doing digital work with art and I’m glad I got to work on my graphic design skills. I think this class is great for anyone wanting to step foot into the graphic design world and see how it is before they committ to anything. I like the digital world but want to focus more on tradi tional art because that’s what I want my future career to be in. I think this class has improved many skills that I wanted to improve on and I highly recomment this class to anyone with interest in art.
