Have You Seen Us Lately?

ONE OF THE OLDEST INCORPORATED CITIES IN CENTRAL FLORIDA, Sanford is home to a wealth of history and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Brick-lined streets, elegant storefronts and large Victorian homes throughout the downtown area and adjacent neighborhoods immediately remind visitors of the city’s 19th century origins.

Sanford is the largest city in Seminole County and is the county seat. With more than 55,000 residents, the city is a community on the rise with the planning and implementation of numerous projects and initiatives across the community.

Picturesque First Street, which runs through the center of downtown Sanford, has been the focus of revitalization for several years. Historical elements such brick streets, traditional light posts, historical signage and street side parallel parking have been incorporated. The streets of the downtown district have welcomed new retail, restaurants and micro-breweries, along with a renovated community theater. The resurgence has in turn created a buzz across the region about the district and its dynamic nightlife.

Recently, a new streetscape project along six blocks of Sanford Avenue in the historic downtown area was completed. With new brick driving lanes, wide sidewalks and new landscaping the area is highly conducive to the vibrant nightlife that exists within the district.

Today Downtown Sanford is also home to a large number of community activities. Among them are the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, Memorial Day Parade, the 4th of July Celebration, Sanford High School Homecoming Parade, the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Illuminated Christmas Light Parade, Lighted Bicycle Parade and Lighted Boat Parade.

In addition, the City of Sanford Department of Parks and Recreation produces or sponsors numerous holiday and youth programs such as an Easter Egg Hunt, Youth Summer Camp, and Spooky Halloween, to name just a few.

In addition, the City of Sanford has invested in parks and the city’s waterfront along the St. John’s River and Lake Monroe. Work on the extension of Riverwalk Park from downtown west along the lakefront was recently completed and its completion further west past the entrance to Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens and on towards the I-4 interchange is in process. Pedestrians, joggers and bicyclists very much enjoy the meticulously landscaped and maintained RiverWalk with its gazebos, swinging benches and awesome vistas while fisherman sit near the water’s edge.

Lake Monroe, a 9,406-acre expanse of shining blue water, borders the city’s downtown on the north side. On breezy days, sailboats depart the Monroe Harbor Marina and dot the lake with their white sails and spinnakers. The marina is also home to the passenger ship Romance, which offers river cruise-some with lunch or dinner-on a paddle wheel powered ship on Lake Monroe and the St. John’s River.

Fort Mellon Park, another waterfront feature of the City, was transformed into a showcase recreational facility with a unique and dynamic splash pad feature popular with residents and visitors. The park and adjacent Seminole Avenue provide additional venue opportunities for large-festivals and events.

Sanford boasts a robust variety of parks and recreation programs for all ages and interest. Whether it is softball, basketball, an aquatic interest or something unique, like the Sanford’s famed Soap Box Derby, Sanford has something to keep you active and capture keep your interest.

Visitors and residents can been seen seven days a week strolling the City’s downtown while enjoying the shops, boutiques, and restaurants. Alive After Five, a popular event held the second Thursday of each month, brings thousand more downtown for live music, wine tasting and art displays and much more.

Sanford’s education options are among the best in the state including Seminole State College at Sanford/Lake Mary. The College’s first and largest campus, Sanford/Lake Mary offers a complete curriculum that is sure to meet the needs on residents and visitors.

The campus is home to dozens of degree and certificate programs in the construction, technology and healthcare fields. It is also home to the University of Central Florida at Seminole State, which allows UCF students to complete select bachelor’s degree programs on the Seminole State campus.

In addition, the Seminole County Public School System is one of the premier school system in the state and country. The district has been named an “Academically High Performing School District” by the Florida Department of Education with an “A” rating since the inception of district grading in 1999. Seminole County Public Schools are ranked #1 for all Central Florida School Districts as measured by standardized testing (FCAT) for Math, Reading and Writing.

Crooms High School of Information Technology, located in Sanford, ranked number 1 in the 2011 U.S. World Report as the most connected school by quantifying its comprehensive high school online infrastructures and access students, parent and faculty have them at school and at home.

Sanford’s transportation network is also a major quality of life asset, whether it is the City’s international airport with a growing number of domestic and international destinations, easy access to Interstate 4 and the 417 Expressway or the recently opened Sanford SunRail commuter rail station, it is easy to get around Sanford and travel to the other parts of the Metro-Orlando area, beaches, attractions and beyond.

CHAMBER COMMITTEES Business Development Division The Business Development Division directs Chamber resources and focus to areas that are important to the overall retention and development of new business within our service area.

Committees will provide Chamber initiatives that will encompass recruitment, retention, education and workforce development, public policies input and other key issues.

The following committees will work to accomplish the Chamber’s goals:

SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE Chairwoman CYNTHIA BLACKWELL Black Rain Partners Objective: The committee is working to build marketing, business development, small business growth, education and other opportunities for small business.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE Chairman GUSS RAHAL Metrovista Printing Objective: The Education Committee is working in partnership with Seminole County Public Schools to develop a pilot program for mentoring at-risk students within Sanford schools.

Through the support of the (CRA) the City has created a partnership with Sanford’s Amtrak Auto Train to provide free round trip shuttle service for waiting passengers to visit and enjoy historic downtown as well as free round trip shuttle service from the Sanford SunRail station into historic downtown (shuttle coordinates with the Sanford SunRail station schedule Mon.-Fri. between 10am-3pm).

WATERFRONT STYLE

Lake Monroe, a 9,406 acre expanse of shining blue water, borders the City of Sanford on the north side. On breezy days, sailboats depart the Monroe Harbor Marina and dot the lake with their white sails and bright spinnakers. Pedestrians enjoy the palm lined RiverWalk with its gazebos and swinging benches while fishermen sit near the water’s edge.

This includes the installation of an 8 foot wide cultural pathway where there is opportunity to feature artistic elements to this area such as street sculptures and murals. The cultural pathway of the streetscape is a direct connection to Sanford’s RiverWalk. This pathway also includes heritage markers featuring information on the historical role Sanford Avenue and the Georgetown neighborhood has played in Sanford’s history. The City also has a facade and rehabilitation program for building owners in the downtown area to facilitate private investment in the revitalization.

These changes have transformed the City’s downtown from a sleepy, historical site to a vibrant and enticing family-friendly destination.

Visitors and residents can be seen seven days a week strolling the City’s downtown while enjoying the shops, boutiques, restaurants and pubs.

The City of Sanford offers an array of engaging and unique dining opportunities as well as craft breweries and several other craft beer friendly establishments all within a pleasurable short walk of each other.

A popular event held the second Thursday of each month, called Alive After Five, brings thousands more downtown for live music, local artists, food and craft beers. “Sanford’s investment in the downtown area has set the stage for numerous events and festivals,” says Triplett. “Downtown

The completion of the $11.2 million RiverWalk in 2004 was one of Sanford’s biggest park improvement projects since the 1930s. The lakefront amenity features a 1.76 mile pedestrian path and the Gateway at RiverWalk, completed in 2007, a six story residential development along the RiverWalk that includes luxurious million dollar townhomes, office space, restaurants as well as specialty retail shops. Sanford continued to expand on this unique amenity with RiverWalk Phase II, a $4.6 million dollar project completed in 2015. The expansion of Florida’s award winning and internationally recognized RiverWalk is a dynamic City amenity built for all to enjoy.

Fort Mellon Park, another waterfront feature of the City, is a showcase recreational facility with a unique and fun splash pad feature popular with residents and visitors. The park and adjacent Seminole Avenue provide additional scenic venue opportunities for large festivals and events.

Sanford’s transportation network is also a major quality of life asset, whether it is the City’s International Airport with a growing number of domestic and international destinations, easy access to Interstate 4 and the 417 Expressway or the Sanford SunRail commuter rail station, it is easy to get around Sanford and travel to the Metro-Orlando area and beyond.
