urrey residents can sleep better knowing that South Fraser Search and Rescue volunteers are ready at any given moment to perform.

Formerly called Surrey Search and Rescue, the outfit adopted its new name seeing as since 1973 it’s been serving Surrey, Delta, Richmond and White Rock as its primary coverage area – roughly about 10 per cent of the population of B.C. When one thinks of search and rescue, things like crampons, ropes, slippery slopes and icy cliffs come to mind. But there’s not too many mountains in these parts, of course. Out here, it’s more like fields, ravines, streams and city streets.

“We are a bit unique that we’re one of the few teams in the province that pretty much doesn’t do rescue but almost everything we do is a search,” says Andrew Wallwork, 34, who has been volunteering with South Fraser Search and Rescue for eight years.

When tasked with a mission, it’s typically to find people who’ve been reported missing.

Part of the trick is trying to figure out what the missing person is most likely to do.

“A substantial part of our calls are folks living with dementia or kids living with sortof neuro diversions that make them more prone to wandering,” Wallwork says.

“The majority of our calls come from Surrey, which makes sense given the population demographic, but certainly throughout the region the requests for service has been on a bit of a steady uptick recognizing that the fundamentals of our calls for service are pretty well directly tied to an aging population and more folks are living with conditions that do make them more prone to wandering.”

Sadly, this looks to be a growth industry.

A 16-year-old boy is in hospital and several youths were taken into custody after a stabbing in North Delta near Delview Secondary school just before noon on Monday (Feb. 27).

Wallwork notes the percentage of the population living with dementia is expected to double or even triple over the next 10 years.

The volunteers also offer presentations through a program called AdventureSmart for schools, community groups and cadets that focuses on planning, training and safety essentials aimed at reducing the need for calls for help from people venturing into the great outdoors.

“We’ve reached thousands of people over the last three years, basically giving them that skillset so when they go out, it’s really simple things like tell somebody where you’re going,” he said, “what time you’re coming back.”

Or packing a signalling device, a whistle, and a headlamp.

After all, “It gets dark at night.”

The organization has about 50 members, all volunteers. Most have day jobs or are self-employed. Wallwork, for example, is a tax auditor for the provincial government.

The South Surrey resident and search manager has a background in scouting and

was looking for a way to give back.

“It seemed like an interesting opportunity to go through, do something different,” he says.

“There’s no such thing as a typical call.

There can be a wide range of reasons why somebody may go missing, we don’t care, we just want to go through and provide that help, so we certainly don’t judge.”

Wallwork says reuniting a lost person with his or her family “is one of the best feelings in the world.”

“Feeling the family’s gratitude, that’s the best feeling in the world.” Finding somebody who was lost is also “the best feeling in the world, knowing that you’ve taken somebody on one of the worst days of their life and made it better.”

On-call day and night, usually at the request of police, SFSR has since Jan. 1 tackled seven incidents, all in Surrey – in South Surrey, Newton, and near the Port Mann and Alex Fraser bridges. Of those seven, two of the people were “despondent,” and the others live with dementia.

A springtime date for Surrey’s Vaisakhi Parade has been announced, and planning is now underway for the return of the popular event after a three-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2023 Khalsa Day parade will be held on Saturday, April 22, organizers with Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar said Tuesday morning.

The event fills Newton-area streets with close to 500,000 people. Hundreds of booths line the parade route as businesses and families hand out food and treats to attendees.

Gurdwara president Gurdeep Singh Samra said “significant crowds” are expected this year after the parade was cancelled in 2020, 2021 and 2022. The event is an important one on the Sikh calendar, he noted.

Surrey RCMP Cpl. Vanessa Munn says SFSR is an “invaluable resource which we most commonly utilize to assist in our missing or lost persons reports. You know, we’re very thankful for all those dedicated volunteers that ensure that this program continues to be able to operate in our area.”

In 2022 the volunteers put in 255 hours on 41 tasks, with an average team attendance of 11 people on each one though a field search can involve up to 30. A response is typically measured in hours. Generally speaking, a volunteer will be on the task for a maximum eight hours before fresh people are called in, if necessary.

South Fraser Search and Rescue doesn’t have somebody waiting at a base ready to go, like you would have with an ambulance station or a firehall. Not all search and rescue members are able to respond all of the time.

“People do shockingly have lives outside of volunteering,” Wallwork notes.

“They will receive a pager and the system will page them and if somebody’s

available to respond they reply yes, if they’re not, which happens from time to time that they reply no, then we’ve got the great benefit of if we’re having a day when our members, something just isn’t happening for them to have that availability to come right that instant, and we need more people, we can call in mutual aid.”

That assistance might come from the Central Fraser Valley, or Coquitlam Ridge-Meadows, “and from time to time we’ll bring in our friends over at North Shore as well, although they’re kind of a little busy with their own stuff most of the time.”

All 2,800 search and rescue volunteers throughout the province are trained to a common standard and Wallwork says it’s “a very strong system here in B.C.” All take a 70-hour course through the Justice Institute of British Columbia, learning about navigating, communication and documentation among other things. There’s also a three-day course for team leaders, a four-day course for managers and training related to swift water rescue and boat operation.

“It’s certainly not something where you can sign up one day and go from zero

to hero in a day,” Wallwork stresses. “You’re very much in it for the long haul.”

Sometimes a search will take volunteers out on the water, mostly on the Fraser River. Sometimes it’s easier to search a dyke from the water.

“When somebody goes missing there’s this massive area that needs to be searched. You can’t all do that from a vehicle.”

Bodies are recovered from time to time.

“Not all searches have that strong positive outcome and yet a recovery is still a success – it gives family closure.

Is it an outcome we like? Of course not. But it gives them closure.

“When there’s incidents that close bridges, to put it somewhat delicately, and trying to provide that closure for the families. I’d like to say we have 100 per cent success, no search and rescue team ever has that. But providing that mapping, showing everywhere a person’s been, I like to think that at least to give families comfort that this massive effort was put through, and it’s not for lack of effort or lack of trying.”

Mostly, he says, people are just “grateful somebody cared.”

To ease some strain on Surrey’s emergency room, the Urgent and Primary Care Centre in Whalley has expanded its access to urgent care services.

In addition to the existing primary care providers, emergency room doctors and nurses are available at the centre seven days a week.

Dr. Craig Murray, regional medical director of emergency medicine for Fraser Health, told the Now-Leader that because of this expansion, patients will have quicker access to urgent care.

Murray said this is especially important in light of the strain our healthcare system is under.

Close to 700 people filled a Surrey banquet hall to raise a whopping $2.4 million for Surrey Hospitals Foundation.

Saturday night’s sold-out Celebration of Care gala (Feb. 25) was held at Aria Banquet and Convention Centre, where the “Sweet Escape”-themed party featured the band Dr. Strangelove, Surrey City Orchestra, acrobats, auctioneer Fred Lee, co-emcees Sonia Sunger and Dr. Imran Ratanshi, scotch tasting, auctions and more.

More than $11 million has been raised in recent years, thanks to those who chip in to help “change the lives of countless patients in Surrey,” according to a post on surreyhospitalsfoundation.com.

This year’s event, billed as “the largest and most celebrated gala in Surrey,” benefited children’s mental and physical health services at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

The night’s fundraising total includes a $1-million gift honouring the legacy and memory of Sherrold Haddad, a longtime supporter of the foundation.

The donation was announced

by Haddad’s wife, Marina, two years after the March 2020 death of the popular auto dealer and community builder.

As well, an Air Canada Giving Tree Raffle raised more than $100,000 thanks to a matching challenge from Bob Hans.

Gala guests were welcomed into “a French Court and Royal Garden” and two reception areas, and were treated to live music, performances, “walking human art and a “delicious dinner that celebrates the diversity of cultures that call Surrey their home.”

“It’s so important to have children’s health care close to home,” said Jane Adams, President and CEO of Surrey Hospitals Foundation.

“We’ve seen time and time again that community support is a vital catalyst for change, and Saturday night was no exception. We raised over $2.4 million to bring life-saving health care to our kids.

“With Surrey being the province’s youngest city, these funds are absolutely critical. I know our city will continue to rally together so Surrey can have the health care it deserves.”

Since Dec. 12, 2022, emergency room doctors – including pediatric doctors – and nurses have joined the existing primary care providers at the centre.

In addition to the primary care providers, the ER doctor and nurses are available to see anyone over

the age of two from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. seven days a week.

Murray said staffing at Surrey Memorial ER has not been impacted by this change, and additional nurses have been added.

“We haven’t decreased nursing in the emerg at all,” he said. “In fact, the nurses were really very supportive of this idea.”

The family-run Roath’s Pawn Shop, on King George, north of 108 Avenue, is “unlike other pawn shops in Surrey,” Dhaliwal said.

Ken Roath said his parents started the business in 1967.

“These last few months have been

challenging with the new drop-in centre at the end of our block,” Roath said. “I mean, it’s just not fair what the government did to us, actually. It’s a challenge every day now.

“We’ll continue there,” he added.

“My son’s third-generation and he’s doing it now, and I’m hardly ever there, actually, and according to him, his son is interested too, so maybe a fourth generation one day.”

After a pair of fast-food openings in Vancouver over the past year, Jollibee has expanded its reach in the region with the first of two Surrey restaurants.

A new King George Hub outlet opened to lineups out the door Saturday (Feb. 18), and a fourth Jollibee location in B.C. is on the way in Newton in coming months, in a new building at Strawberry Hill Shopping Centre.

A Surrey effort to boost Special Olympics athletes has raised thousands of dollars.

Culminating on the Semiahmoo Peninsula with a chilly dip Saturday (Feb. 25) in the waters off Crescent Beach, the annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics BC inspired Surrey RCMP officers, firefighters, BC Lions, Special Olympians and more to brave the ice-cold waves, with some even racing into the water in uniform.

Shortly before taking the plunge, Supt.

Aaron Paradis, Community Services Officer, said supporting the multiple programs offered through Special Olympics BC is “just an incredible piece” of the effort.

“Today is certainly a cold one that we’re braving. But, the part that’s gonna warm us up, certainly is, it warms you up to see our Special Olympians and all of the programs that it supports.”

Helping Special Olympics BC rebuild programming that was impacted by the pandemic was a key focus for event organizers this year.

Clem Andrews, head coach of a Special Olympics basketball program in Surrey for the past 15 years, said tournaments, uniforms and facility rentals are among costs that donations help cover.

Just one fix would be nice T his is the season of lofty promises.

From the Speech from the Throne in the B.C. Legislature a few weeks ago, to the budget announced Tuesday (see story on page 13), we’re hearing a lot about how the province will tackle the myriad problems we face.

You’ve heard about them for years – the housing crisis, the overdose and toxic drug crisis, inflation and the rising cost of living and, of course, the overstretched healthcare system and lack of family doctors.

The government has promised, and will again, to tackle all of these.

It can hardly do otherwise.

But these problems go back years. None of them are likely to be solved entirely in a single legislative session. We hoped that the first ministers’ meeting last week delivered aid on health care.

We can hope that decriminalization and more funding for treatment help the drug crisis. We can hope for a housing policy that helps rein in the still-absurd cost of a home.

But we can’t expect any of them to be solved.

Maybe these are problems that are, by their very nature, intractable.

Some of them may be liter-

ally impossible to solve – there is no magic number of doctors and nurses that will create a perfect healthcare system, after all. A perfect system just doesn’t exist.

But it would be nice if Premier David Eby’s government could make some solid progress on at least one of these fronts by the end of the year.

If just one thing worked out – a plunge in toxic drug deaths, thousands of new affordable homes, immigrant doctors being accredited – it would feel like we might actually solve these other hard problems, finally.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing; I probably include more meat in my diet than I should. But for some people, it is off the menu entirely. We can adjust our diets, clip coupons, buy items on sale and freeze them, or compromise on the quality of the food we eat, but the overall trend is up, up, up.

And it’s putting a ton of pressure on the most vulnerable people in our community.

I can only imagine what it must be like for a senior on a fixed income or a single parent trying to feed a growing family. It’s no surprise that rising demand is stretching local food banks to their limit.

This trend of skyrocketing food prices has been dubbed “greedflation,” and the federal NDP is

happy to make political hay out of the situation.

They’ve called on the Trudeau government to extend its investigation into the rapid rise in food costs until CEOs of the major grocery store chains are forced to explain themselves, which they have so far managed to avoid doing.

“While families are deciding if they can afford the more than 35-per-cent hike on a head of lettuce – grocery CEOs are making billions in profits,” reads an NDP news release from Feb. 21.

“In fact last year, Loblaws made an extra million dollars a day … It doesn’t make any sense, and Canadians deserve answers from the big CEOs profiting off of food.”

They’re not wrong – the numbers are hard to swallow.

They’re also probably not going to get far with their demands.

bloody as they did in 18th century France. We live in a world where people, once they’ve risen to a certain level, are nearly impossible to hold to account. It’s bizarre to think that grocery chain CEOs fall into that category, but here we are.

It’s certainly not too much to demand a little transparency.

Obviously, the stakes aren’t quite as high as they were 200 years ago, but if things continue the way they have been, at some point, the view from the top of the tower may once again include torches and pitchforks – even if this time, they’re only metaphorical.

For now, though, it appears these modern-day monarchs will have their cake.

And they’ll eat it, too.

Surrey’s slice of $1B grant may help offset proposed 17.5% tax hike

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke says Surrey’s share of a $1-billion community infrastructure grant announced by Premier David Eby on Feb. 10 could “absolutely” be used to offset a portion of a potential 17.5 per cent property tax that’s bearing down on Surrey taxpayers this year.

“But, you know, we can only budget a bird in the hand – we can only budget on what we know and we have nothing in writing confirmed, nothing established,” Locke told the Now-Leader on Friday.

“Hopefully, and I did reach out to the premier to ask him if he could give us an indication because certainly if we did have that information we could make changes now, but I haven’t heard back from him.”

Locke revealed the proposed 17.5 per cent tax increase, which doesn’t include utility rate hikes, at a news conference Feb. 18 with the biggest portion of that, 9.5 per cent, levied “entirely due” to cover costs associated with the policing transition.

Locke said this proposed budget is based on the premise the Surrey RCMP will continue as the city’s police force.

“If we were to go with the Surrey Police Service, that number would be significantly more,” she said.

Locke said the proposed budget is “certainly not a budget that I am happy to deliver but it is a budget that we have to deliver.”

Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth has yet to render his decision whether Surrey should maintain the RCMP as its police department of jurisdiction or continue with the

“We haven’t had a call, we’re waiting on it,” Locke said Friday.

On Feb. 10, Eby was in Surrey, with Locke at his side, to announce a $1 billion pool of funds from which all 188 of B.C.’s municipalities and regional districts can draw for local government infrastructure.

Locke at the time told the Now-Leader it was her understanding Surrey would receive somewhere in the neighbourhood of $60 million to $80 million.

“That’s what they said to me – I certainly hope it’s significantly more than that, it should be, if it’s properly apportioned if we get our fair share, I will certainly be asking for that,” Locke reaffirmed Friday. “But we have had anything confirmed.”

Part of Surrey’s slice of the pie would go toward developing the third rink at the Cloverdale arena, for example. “It’s supposed to be designated to capital projects so yes absolutely we could make that move that number significantly and that’s why I reached out to the premier but I didn’t hear back from him yet.”

Otherwise, part of that 17.5 per cent tax hike, some $34 million, would be used to fund the Cloverdale project.

“It would make a significant dent because the 9.5 per cent is only for three years and we don’t anticipate it’s going to go for even three years so it would be a very effective way of reducing that number.”

and Mayor Brenda Locke for comment. The City of Surrey’s communications manager, Oliver Lum, provided an emailed statement attributed to Locke.

“I have full confidence in Councillor Stutt and will not be commenting further while this complaint is active,” the statement reads.

Stewart said that on Nov. 14, 2022, Stutt voted in support of a motion to end the transition, with the final vote tally being 5-4.

On Jan. 30, 2023, Stewart added, Locke appointed Stutt chairman of the Public Safety Committee, “which she claims will offer a new standard for accountability and oversight over the RCMP should it remain as Surrey’s Police of Jurisdiction.

“Throughout the public discourse prior and subsequent to this motion, Councillor Stutt has never disclosed that the RCMP employs his son in the Surrey Detachment, nor has he ever declared that his daughter is assigned to the RCMP via secondment from the City of Surrey,” Stewart’s statement reads.

“Referencing the Code of Conduct, Mr. Stutt failed to notify the Chair of all City Council meetings (Mayor Brenda Locke) and recuse himself from participation in the debate and vote on the aforementioned motion.”

ical” elected officials presiding over the transition are “above reproach” considering that the future of policing “will impact the public safety of residents for generations to come.”

Stewart also noted in his written statement, emailed to the Now-Leader, that Locke during the Nov. 7, 2022 city council meeting announced she’s bringing back the Office of the Ethics Commissioner to “help protect the integrity of the city and give residents a sense that there is oversight in decision-making.”

He cited City of Surrey Council Code of Conduct Bylaw, 2020, No. 20020, noting it “clearly outlines the parameters, rules and expected protocol for City Council Members.

“Specifically, Section 20, that “[a] Council Member shall rigorously avoid situations which may result in claims of pecuniary interest, conflict of interest or bias” and Section 32, that “[a] Council Member shall not attempt to obtain a benefit from the City for a Family Member.”

The SPU has submitted a formal request to the Office of the Surrey Ethics Commissioner to investigate Stutt’s alleged breach of the City of Surrey’s rules around conflict of interest.

“In spite of the ongoing search by Surrey City Council for a new Ethics Commissioner, SPU trusts that this request will still receive the attention it deserves considering the magnitude and timely nature of the matter in question. SPU hopes that today’s (February 27, 2023) Ethics Commissioner Selection Committee meeting will help to expedite this investigation,” Stewart said.

“Surrey residents’ faith in public safety is essential to upholding the quality of life within our city. SPU is advancing this request in support of maintaining and enhancing public trust,” Stewart concluded.

Meantime, Locke noted in her statement that the city is in “advanced stages” of hiring a new ethics commissioner and it’s expected the position will be filled within 30 days.

“The hiring committee, which includes members of the public, will recommend a shortlist of three candidates for council’s consideration and approval,” she explained.

“Complaints to the Ethics Commissioner are treated equally and, under my watch, the commissioner will have full independence in their investigation without interference from any member of council. It is important to note that there would not be an Ethics Commissioner if not for my commitment to reinstate the position that was eliminated by the previous city council.”

Snow blanketed the provincial capital in the morning hours of B.C.’s budget day, but David Eby’s New Democratic government plans to make it rain in the upcoming fiscal year.

Finance Minister Katrine Conroy presented the 2023-24 budget Tuesday (Feb. 28), saying this year’s budget helps protect people who can’t afford high prices and takes action on issues people care about like finding affordable housing and accessing health care.

But the budget is also short on key details, includes future deficits and warns of potentially rough economic winds ahead.

Highlighted spends include $1 billion in one-time grants for municipalities, $199 million of new money for mental health, addictions and treatment services and the long-promised, long-delayed renter’s rebate, albeit in form of a credit, of up to $400 per year.

Starting April 1, the tax will increase by $15-per-tonne of carbon dioxide each year until it reaches $170 in 2030.

It currently sits at $50-per-tonne.

The increase means that the tax’s share on a litre of gasoline will rise to 37.4 cents by 2030 from just over 11 cents today.

This increase is perhaps the most significant pocket-issue for British Columbians coming out of a budget that is some $4.2 billion dollars in the red thanks to nearly $80.2

billion dollars worth of estimated spending. About $4.7 billion is new spending starting April 1.

Estimated revenues for 2023-24 are down nearly $5 billion from the latest forecast as the provincial government expects B.C.’s economy to grow by 0.4 per cent in the 2023 calendar year, thanks to the conflict in Ukraine and other economic factors such as interest rates.

But dark clouds on the economic horizon are not stopping the provincial government from spending another $3.7 billion before March 31 with $2.7 billion requiring legislative approval outside the regular budget process.

This funding includes the $1 billion for one-time grants for municipalities announced in February.

The rest – $500 million for the renters protection fund announced in January 2023 and $500 million for an additional affordability credit for families – does not require legislative approach because it falls under existing legislation.

B.C. will finish the 2022-23 fiscal year with a surplus of $3.6 billion, which is $2.1 billion lower than the

treatment services. Over three years, the government plans to spend $867 million on mental health, addictions and treatment services in responding to the overdose drug crisis.

Fueled up for a tour to Surrey and other B.C. cities is “Driving Me Crazy,” a comedy-drama about three generations of a family forced to navigate the highways of life.

The play stars Ellie King as Liz, a grandmother fighting to keep her driver’s license, but that’s not

from it, apparently.

“At the moment I own three vehicles and a trailer, so there’s a big truck and a MR2 turbo and I still have my electric car, too,” King said with a laugh during a break from rehearsals in North Vancouver.

She’s travelled the highway there from Langley, but

and playmaker follows the October 2022 death of her beloved husband, Geoff King, who helped her build Royal Canadian Theatre Company over the past decade-plus.

Last summer King retired from running from the Whalley-based company to return to acting, and then along came “Driving Me Crazy” at the perfect time.

She was offered the role of Liz for a spring 2023 tour that includes four show times at Surrey Arts Centre’s Main Stage this week, from Wednesday to Saturday (March 1-4).

“Losing Geoff, I was not in a good space, and doing this could not have come at a more opportune moment for me,” she said. “It hasn’t filled the gap, because it just can’t do that, but it’s given me something to think about, you know, something to do.”

King now has “the unbelievable pleasure” of just being an actor again.

“I’ve been 30 years running theatre companies or producing shows, directing, writing grants, booking venues, all that, and I haven’t had time for me. There were some acting bits here and there, doing Shirley (Valentine) off and on, and now I’m way past that.

So other than that I haven’t had much of a chance to be on

away, it’s a surreal scene, but at the end of it they go from being these strangers to being part of my family, and I genuinely found myself tearing up because it felt so real. It’s a real family feeling, which is amazing, because we’ve only been working together since last Tuesday.

The bond is very strong already.”

Wrestlers on a Surrey school team won another provincial-championship banner in tribute to a team member killed in a single-vehicle crash not long ago.

Taren Lal, 17, was heading home after a long day of work Jan. 7 when he lost control of his vehicle in Langley, near Fraser Highway and 228 Street.

On Saturday (Feb. 25), less than two months later, his Tamanawis Secondary teammates rallied to win a fourth-consecutive B.C. boys wrestling title at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, beating the second-place team (W.J. Mouat of Abbotsford) by a whopping 27 points.

“We had a bit of extra energy,” confirmed Tamanawis co-coach Jessy Sahota. “We all had a conversation before the tournament, that it would be dedicated to Taren Lal, and I know that all of the wrestlers had that in the back of their heads this weekend.”

Sahota said Taren was “a go-to person” on the school wrestling team, “the one everyone would go to, and he was a very positive person. He is missed.

“We’re in talks with the school principal to somehow celebrate this victory and also honour Taren, so he’s remembered as well,” added Sahota, who co-coaches with brother Paul (Pola) Sahota, Shaan Randhawa and others.

Also Tuesday, four Surrey school teams were still in the hunt for the 4A South Fraser boys basketball championship, and eight still had a shot of playing at the B.C. hoops championships in Langley.

moo Secondary’s gym in South Surrey, the four best teams will earn berths at provincials.

The two teams in Friday night’s final (March 3) will earn trips to Langley Events Centre, but the losers must win playoff games today (Thursday) to advance to provincials.

In multiple tiers, the many provincial championship basketball tournaments will again take place at Langley Events Centre, starting with junior boys (ended Tuesday), followed by junior and senior girls (March 1-4) and senior boys (March 8-11). At Tamanawis, work will continue on building the female wrestling team.

“We had just one female this year,” Sahota lamented, “and in the past we’ve had up to four. But the lack of training partners is an issue, because they’re understandably reluctant to train with the guys.

Even this one female, we were scared of losing her because she didn’t have a training partner. We’re looking at having a female mentor come in and help build the female side of things.”

Surrey Eagles finished February with a pair of road wins on Vancouver Island, and now have playoffs on the horizon with a month of regular-season games remaining.

The BC Hockey League team beat the Bulldogs 3-1 in Port Alberni on Friday (Feb. 24) before scoring a 3-2 victory in Victoria over the Grizzlies on Saturday.

In February, the Eagles won seven of eight games, other than a 1-0 home loss to the league-leading Penticton Vees to start the month, and seven straight.

With a playoff spot already locked up and 11 games to play in March, the Eagles sit in second place in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference, six points back of Nanaimo Clippers (as of Monday, prior to a Wednesday-night game March 1 in Coquitlam).

In Port Alberni Friday, Tate Taylor, Ryden Evers and Ante Zlomislic scored for the Eagles, and goaltender Eli Pulver stopped 35 of

LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS AND VOLUNTEERS New Frailty Self-Management Health Coach Study Starting in March 2023 Self-Management BC is launching a new study in the Fraser Health Region to evaluate the effectiveness of peer coaches using self management strategies and the Canadian AVOID Strategy to slow down and/or prevent the progression of frailty in older adults.

- Seniors 65+ with fluency in English and • Living in the Fraser Health Region • Concerned about becoming frail • Have one or more chronic health conditions • Able to give consent • Have access to computer, internet, and a telephone • Willing to commit to being in the study for 5 months To Volunteer as a Health Coach Health coaches will: • Receive training • Be paired with a study participant • Provide a 45-minute weekly telephone call for 13 weeks • Provide support, encouragement, and empower the participants towards health-enhancing actions.
