• Don’t underestimate a child’s mo bility; children begin climbing before they can walk.

The father of a two-year-old Langley girl who broke her leg and lost two teeth in a tumble out of a third-storey window is urging other parents to secure their homes. “Taryn is a lucky, lucky girl,” said Sean Lim. On Monday, Aug. 8, his daughter, who is a couple of months shy of three years old, was with her mother, Sally Jo, getting ready for a play date. The little girl was hiding behind the curtains in the master bedroom, said Lim.Her mother told her to come out, but the second time, Taryn didn’t come from behind the curtains. Jo looked out the window to discover that Taryn had fallen three storeys. She called 9-1-1. Lim said his wife was “screaming” when she called him. She told him Taryn had fallen onto the concrete. “As soon as I heard that, I thought, ‘Oh my god, she’s not going to make it,’” Lim said. While he rushed home from work in North Vancouver, Langley Town ship firefighters and B.C. Emergency Health Services paramedics were rushing to the home. Taryn was taken to hospital by air ambulance. “I was getting ready to say goodbye when I got there,” Lim said. Fortunately, her injuries were much less serious than they could have been. Taryn has a broken leg, and two broken teeth had to be extracted. She has some other bumps and bruis es, but was released from hospital and returned home on Thursday, Aug.Lim’s11.family is incredibly grateful that their youngest child will be okay. He said in the past, he’s seen cover age of children being injured, and has blamed the parents, thinking he and his wife were cautious, and nothing would happen. They had warned their children about the dangers of windows, and even demonstrated the risk of a fall with a dropped teddy bear.“But it could be anybody,” Lim said. “It was me.” As far as they can tell, Taryn used the curtains and a baseboard heater to climb up to the window, which was open in the summer heat. Lim has already purchased window locks, which can keep the windows from opening more than 10 centi meters. He urges all other parents of young children to do the same. So far this year, 11 children have been treated at BC Children’s Hospi tal after falling from a window, and in 2021, 16 children from infants to 15-year-olds were treated for falls from high elevations, according to Children’s Hospital. Two of those children died. BC Children’s Hospital offers the following tips for safety:

Nick Greenizan Black Press Media Surrey RCMP are investigating after shots were fired at a South Sur rey residence shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, and a burning car was found a short distance away just minutes later. According to police, reports of shots fired at a home in the 2600block of 176 Street came in just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday. A vehicle was heard speeding away from the scene. Police officers spoke with a home owner who had located bullet holes in the exterior of the residence. No one was injured, police added. “Within minutes” of the shots-fired call, police received a report that a vehicle was “fully engulfed in flames” in Grandview Heights, near 28th Av enue and 194A Street. The torched vehicle had been previously reported stolen from the Kelowna area, police said. “Given the timing and proximity of these two incidents, police believe them to be linked,” a news release issued Monday morning said. Police said it’s believed the shoot ing is targeted, and are looking into connections to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict. Surrey RCMP’s general-investiga tion unit has taken over the investi gation, and are canvassing the area for CCTV footage and additional witnesses.Anyone with information, or se curity-camera footage, is asked to call the RCMP at 604-599-0502, or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or visit solvecrime.ca.

On the second day, the team played to a second-place finish, and proudly posed for a picture with their plaque. About 10 minutes later, they re turned to the bus, to discover thieves had struck again, this time making off with backpacks, cash, a laptop, headphones, clothes, and some of the girls’ passports. It appeared someone had forced the bus door open, possibly with a crowbar.“Thefirst few rows of stuff [on the seats] were taken,” Cameron told the Langley Advance Times Fortunately, the team had copies of the birth certificates for the players whose passports were stolen, and they also had their driver’s licences, so they were able to get back across the border, after explaining the cir cumstances to the Canada Border Services Agency. “The customs guys were super awe some,” Cameron commented. Cameron was philosophical about the trip, saying she had no reason not to return to Oregon, though probably not in a bus. “We had a really good weekend on the field,” the coach observed, “In the field, it was not quite so good.”Afew days after the bus was dam aged, police in Oregon announced they busted a $22 million catalytic converter theft ring that allegedly trafficked in 44,000 stolen converters since early 2021. The core areas alongside the SkyTrain line, and near its terminus, include a mix of uses, from low-rise res idential, to big box shop ping centres, restaurants, and small shops. There are also a significant number of car dealerships, auto shops, parts dealers, and light industrial buildings. “Most of those are already purchased,” Klea man said of the light in dustrialDevelopersdistricts.are willing to pay a premium to buy within Langley City, he noted, because the City has a reputation for pro cessing development appli cations faster than Surrey or Langley Township. In the City, an appli cation can take months, rather than years. But that means a lot of plans won’t be submitted right away. “They’ll time the mar ket,” he Developerssaid. will wait until the market is right for their project, comfort able in the knowledge that they can get a project ap proved in a timely manner. Kleaman said another land assembly on 196th Street, near the other main SkyTrain station in Lang ley, didn’t sell for as much as the Eastleigh Crescent site, because it was outside the City’s boundaries. “That was one of the factors in pricing,” he said. The City is planning for significant population growth and increasing density over the next three decades, and SkyTrain and other forms of public transit are key to its OCP. As of 2019, there were 28,085 people in Langley City. By 2050, the City ex pects there to be 41,438. The mix of housing will radically change. While Langley City has long had plenty of lowrise apartment buildings, it also had many areas of single-family housing, es pecially near the Nicomekl River and on the west side of the City south of 56th Avenue.Butcondos and town houses are being rapidly built, and the arrival of SkyTrain and more mixeduse housing downtown will change that. As of the creation of the OCP, there were 7,260 apartments, 1,945 town houses or duplexes, and 3,760 single family homes in the City. The “total capacity” for those three types is 24,713 apartments, 6,094 duplexes and townhouses, and 3,046 single family homes. Wolves escaped from their enclosure Tues day morning at the Greater Vancouver Zoo, prompting a response by the BC Conservation Officer Service and Langley RCMP.

“The Greater Vancouver Zoo is working with the Langley RCMP and the B.C Conservation Officer Service to contain wolves that have been found outside their enclosure this morning, this is an ongoing investigation and is suspicious, and believed to be due to malicious intent,” a statement posted by the zoo said. According to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service, as of Tuesday afternoon, just one wolf was still at large. The zoo said there is no danger to the public, and asked anyone who sees a wolf in the area around the zoo to contact the zoo at 604-8566825 ext. 2004, the Langley RCMP at 604-5323200, or conservation at 1-877-952-7277. Most wolves were back in the care of their animal health and welfare team, the zoo said. “GVZoo staff continue to actively search for small number of remaining wolves un-account ed for,” it added. The cause of the escape appears to be “un lawful entry and vandalism,” the zoo said. Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Largy confirmed officers were called in to assist BC Conserva tion at about 9:30 a.m. The zoo was closed Tuesday. Its webpage lists nine wolves one to three years old, along with cubs born in June.

A report by the fiscally conservative Fraser Institute shows that municipal spending per person is going up fast in Langley Township, but it doesn’t break down sources of govern mentTherevenue.reportranks Lower Mainland municipal ities by both municipal spending per person, as well as municipal revenue per person, based on data from 2019. Langley City was near the bottom in terms of revenue in 2019, coming in at 15th spot, with $2,040 in revenue per person. Langley Township was in sixth, with $2,826 in revenue perCoquitlamperson. was in the top spot for revenue per person, at $3,181, while Port Coquitlam was at the bottom, at $1,813. Meanwhile when it came to municipal spend ing, the City spent $1,705 per person, while the Township spent $1,968 per person. The City’s spending per person, adjusted for inflation, was up 13.2 per cent over the 10 years from 2009 to 2019, while the Township’s was up 20.6 per cent. The report does not break down types of municipal revenue. For example, it does not make a distinction between property taxes, ca sino revenues, and fees charged to developers, although the report’s appendix points out that Coquitlam had such high revenues per person because of a development boom in 2019. It also doesn’t make a distinction between residential property taxes, and property taxes on industrial or commercial developments, or on agricultural lands. Commercial lands are taxed at a higher rate, while working farms in the ALR are taxed at a lower rate. Different municipalities gain different amounts of revenue from multiple sources. Langley Township and City both have signif icant commercial and industrial areas, and both have seen surges of development that have increased the amount they collect from devel opers in recent years. Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese noted that between 2009 and 2019, the Township in creased its development cost charges (DCCs), but also saw increases in service fees for utilities like water and sewage. Other revenues have in creased as new rec centres and pools have been opened.Butthere have also been big increases in expenditures, Froese said, pointing to the cost of building and maintaining more parks, rec centres, and infrastructure for things like roads andEvenwater.the cost of climate change has added up, with flood repairs after major rainfall events in recent years, including last year’s at mospheric river. “Every municipality has its own unique chal lenges,” said Froese.

The passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in the United States last week could be one of the most significant pieces of legislation the Americans have passed related to Canadian manu facturing and mining in decades. One of the provisions in the extensive bill intro duces big tax credits for electric vehicles – but with the caveat that they have to be built or sourced with in North America. Likewise, battery materials are to be sourced from nations with which American has free-trade agreements. If automakers bite, this could lead to one of the biggest re-shoring efforts ever, as auto and battery manufacturing, and mining of key minerals such as nickel, copper, and lithium, can come straight to Canada.Thereare concerns with whether or not the new mining boom will cause its own environmental is sues, not to mention the need to consult and work with Indigenous Canadians on their traditional lands.Butthe trade off for mining more of these min erals is that a lot less coal and oil comes out of the ground, now and in the future. Coal mining and oil extraction are pretty destruc tive themselves. And there’s no way to recycle coal or oil but there is for copper, nickel, and lithium. Canada’s leaders need to get moving to take ad vantage of this economic and environmental oppor tunity, while minimizing any downsides. That means working with both environmentalists and First Na tions from the start, along with mining firms, auto manufacturers, and major labour unions.

Canada has a potential for plants that will provide generations of jobs and create a cleaner, healthier atmosphere for everyone. There will be an environmental impact. But there will be a lot less of an impact than mining and burning fossil fuels is having on our country and our world right now.

Poilievre’s big problem

Pierre Poilievre, it’s safe to say, is not likely to be a normal Conservative Party leader. Yes, there’s still an outside, tiny, minis cule chance that Jean Charest will manage to scrape up enough of an “anybody but Pierre” vote in the leadership race to succeed Erin O’Toole. But the odds are that Poilievre is about to become the face of Canadian conservatism for the next sev eralSoyears.thequestion becomes, will Poilievre be a serious threat to the Liberals in 2025, three years from now? Pulling back and being ob jective, I think Poilievre has one big advan tage that has only been discussed a little bit. He’s an appealing candidate for people who don’t ever vote. Previous Conservative leaders ,like An drew Scheer or Stephen Harper, and pre vious Liberal PMs like Jean Chretien and Trudeau senior, have attempted to craft a popular image and set of policies, designed to appeal to the broad middle swathe of Canadian voters. Think of a regular Canadian voter. They come in a variety of forms. Some are firm partisans, and the cies,vatives/Greens/etc.NDP/Liberals/Consercancountontheirvotesyearafteryear.Othersaremoremildlyideological,andmayskipfrompartytoparty,dependingonpoliciesandtheirimpressionoftheleaders.Buttheyallhaveonethingincommon–theythinkvotingisworthdoing.Thelargestuntappedresourceintheelectorateisthefolkswhodon’tbothertoshowuptothepollsatall.Manynon-votershaveabaselinebeliefthatpoliticiansareallcrooks,they’reallthesame,andthereforevotingneverchangesanything.ThosearethefolksPoilievreiscourting.Poilievre’spolicies,suchastheyare,havebeenaimedatpeoplewhohaveverylittleconnectiontomainstreamconservatism(ormainstreamanythingelse).He’spushedBitcoinandcryptocurrenandhe’sdeclaredacrusadeagainst any and all vaccine mandates. Neither of those are major concerns of mainstream, middle-class Canadians, which is why no other political leader is talking about them much right now. But they’re things that get a lot of people angry, and a lot of those people are not regularPoilievre’svoters.plan seems to be to create a co alition between those who reflexively vote Conservative, and a bunch of newcomers, including conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxx ers, cryptobros, and whatever other outsid er groups he can add by 2025. But that’s Poilievre’s big problem. For the next three years, he has to keep those people all facing the same way, all fired up, and ready to vote. Despite the fact that the key thing we know about them is that they usually don’t do that! Bitcoin’s price tanked this year, and vac cine mandates and even masking rules are all but gone, with better vaccines expected as soon as this fall. For Poilievre to win and become PM, he’s going to have to keep a lot of very peculiar plates spinning all the way to 2025. I doubt he can manage that trick.

Later that day I was able to verify that indeed I had a postdated payment arranged and I phoned the City to advise of the dou ble payment. I could not reach a person and left a message which was answered two days later as a message, advising me to either ask for a cheque, which would take four to six weeks and draw a $25 refund charge, or leave the money with the City to be applied the following year including a “small” interest amount. As a pensioner on a fixed income, I cannot afford to leave funds for a year and felt unfairly treated to allow four to six weeks with the monetary penalty and phoned the City again to speak to ofbackEventuallysomebody.IgotacallfromaPaulGilberttheCity’sadministra

Nika Maria: That’s good, the area needs a complete overhaul it’s pretty scary right now. Hopefully this will create a family friendly environment with a lot of young families and professionals moving in.

tion, who confirmed the two options available to me and when questioned about the length of delay and the extra charge, he defended the policy. He then responded that it would normally only take two weeks and takes four to five levels of au thority to issue the cheque, and that procedure will cost the City the amount charged.Iwasalways under the impression that the City staff is there to service its residents as it is paid by residents.Ihavebeen working in business all my life and have been involved in all aspects of accounting and cheque generation. The City is probably issuing thousands of cheques every month and for an unexpected occasion like this, would not make a difference nor be felt in the workload. It sounds to me more like gouging the public whenever chance permits.Regardless of the waste in manpower and resourc es which is known to be rampant in any bureau cratic institution as the ef ficiency takes a backseat to the stress reduction of its staff, it is further evidence of public office feeding its own existence far beyond collecting of taxes. In my case this is adding insult to injury.Incontrast, I can return merchandise to any store within a reasonable time no questions asked with out delay and monetary penalty despite items re turned must be restocked, requiring extra time and manpower.Eventually I got the refund cheque from the City on July 28, less the $25 the City ungraciously deducted.

Dear Editor, Monday, July 25 was Langley Township’s last council meeting, as we go into a election. At this last meeting retiring Mayor Jack Froese and councillors reflected on their past term. Froese was overcome with emotion remembering his years in office, his children, grandchildren and the loss of his late wife, and his many years serving for Lang ley Township as mayor. Councilors as well reflected on their passed term, with Council lors Steve Ferguson and Petrina Arnason indicating running for another term, and join Eric Woodward (running for mayor), Blair Whitmarsh (running for mayor), and Margaret Kunst (running to be re-elected for councillor).This2018-2022 mayor and council related very passionate ly their love for their jobs, and whole heartedly as that was so well worded by each and every one of them as they took their turn speaking at this last council meeting. I wish one and all a very happy and safe summer, and if you are one of ones that are run ning in our up and coming elec tion in the Township, I and many others wish you well knowing you are proud to serve for beautiful Township people. Shirley LangleySawatsky,Township Dear Editor, As a Langley resident of many years, I’m seeing the downtown area of Langley as a disgrace, not good to see for someone new coming into the city. The bus loop and casino area are really bad, and as we know, the homeless some times stay there. There is broken concrete at the loop and sidewalks are so stained. I don’t know what the solution is, but someone take that first step and help the people living on the streets. No one should be without a home. Irene Rooney, Langley City The City obtains most of its revenues from property taxes. Most land on City SkyTrain route already bought by developers.

Vicki Forbes: Great event! Was there on Friday.

City fee feels like gouging

Carmen Neilson-Phelan: For those of us who own within this yellow/orange map, we just wait for the developer to come a knocking? Holly Pavlovic: This area is already riddled with homeless drug addicts, it will only get worse once the SkyTrain is here! What’s the city’s plan to combat this?

The elevator, they say, “suddenly dived downwards and hard stopped between floors with the plaintiffs as occupants inside.” They say the drop and sudden stop injured the family members, and that they were then trapped “for a lengthy period” inside the hot elevator, without water, terrified it would fall further.

An elevator that allegedly plunged and jerked to a stop, injuring a family of nine, is the subject of a lawsuit against Langley City, a local condo complex, and a maintenance company.Theincident, accord ing to a July 29 notice of claim filed with the Supreme Court of Brit ish Columbia in Van couver, took place on Aug. 2, 2020, when four generations of a fam ily went to visit a new condo unit purchased by one of the family

As we learnedduringthe pandemic, many folks struggle with loneliness. Seniors, singles and young families stuck at home andtryingto juggle everything and still remain sane. The Wage_Wagon was only completed about a month ago, and King said the UA170 team (he and a half dozen other union members) has already rolled it out to a few car shows this summer, including one recently in White Rock and another coming up in Mission. They’re joining what King called a real push to get young men and women involved in the trades, and he’s excited to team up with Cruise-In.“We’rejust trying to get in front of people and get them to realize the trades are an option,” he said. Car shows are a great place to reach young people who like to work with their hands and may hold a strong inter est in mechanics, he added.

He cited housing afford ability and homelessness as key issues, but also economic development and attracting a vibrant business community. Ashdown was a board trustee from 2011 to 2014, then was defeated in the 2014 elections. She ran again in 2018 as well. She will be running for one of the two Langley City seats on the board. Candy Ashdown was a trustee from 2011 to 2014. Her mom was also one.

She said that the strain on the school system from the pandemic has been “tremendous,” and that a lot of work needs to be done at the school board table.“Iwill always be very proud of what our board accomplished during the term,” she said of her time in office. “We paid off a $13 million deficit a year early, hired a new district leadership team, developed a much-need ed Long-Term Facilities Plan, and formed liaison committees with both the Township and City.” She said working with the municipal govern ments is also important now, as rapid growth has made the need for space in schools even more im portant.Whenshe was on the board, Ashdown was chair of the Education Committee, and sat on the Policy Committee as well. She was a school board representative for several Langley City committees, including Recreation, Culture and Public Art, and the Parks and Envi ronment Advisory Com mittee.Ashdown has a long history with the district, not only having graduated from it, but via involve ment with her children’s schools, including six years as president of vice-pres ident of her local Parent Advisory Council, and was on the executive term of the District Parent Ad visory Council (DPAC). The upcoming municipal elections for school board and local councils will be held on Oct. 15.

She was fortunate in that she didn’t have to wait very long. In 2022, the association announced that it would re turn with the annual event on Saturday, Aug. 20, and Bon nell is excited for the day. “I know it is a great avenue for people to get outside to meet like-minded people,” she said. “It is a healthy way to be a part of something com munal.”Ashundreds of vendors will be taking part in the event this year, Bonnell was not the only one who had been

It would be their third Arts Alive for McDougall and her Burnaby-based business part ner, Ashley Ozechouski. “We were shy and nervous the first time, but it went real ly well,” said MacDougall. With COVID and Ozechouski’s pregnancy last year, the duo couldn’t work on many projects; hence, MacDougall said she is pret ty “anxious” for this year’s event. She also felt disap pointed when the event had to be cancelled during the pandemic.“Weput things on pause and did a little research to bring new items to Arts Alive,” MacDougall said. MacDougall added she is thrilled about this year’s event. Both trained masseuses, MacDougall and Isaak, sell hand-made massage candles, essential oils, and massage bars. McDougall said she would also give free candle holders with every purchase from her booth 128. The Aug. 20 Arts Alive will run all day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., between 204th and 206th Streets on Fraser High way. Some of the activities planned for the day include facepainting, live music, visu al art, and more. Teri James, executive director at the Downtown Langley Business Association said nice weather could result in more than 30,000 people stopping by throughout the day.

DLBA investing in making return of downtown festival memorable Tanmay Ahluwalia tanmay.ahluwalia@langleyadvancetimes.com Arts Alive festival draws thou sands annually to Langley City, and art lovers and enthusiasts alike are expected to be back in record numbers later this month. As the event enters its 27th year, the Downtown Langley Business Association (DLBA) team is in vesting additional resources this time to make the day more mem orable.The2022 Arts Alive festival will focus on kids with multiple activities planned throughout the entire day-long festival. Instead of one, there will be two facepainters, and the bouncy castle and balloon twisters will be replaced with a whole stage of children’s entertain ers, said Teri James, the DLBA’s executive“Throughoutdirector.the day, there will be multiple children’s entertainers on stage… magicians, singers, per formers, and dancers,” she said. James also confirmed this year’s festivities will have “way more” roving entertainment than ever before. Some of the activities planned include facepainting, live music, visual art, and more. James said that if the weather cooperates, she expects more than 30,000 people throughout the day. “That includes people coming and going, of course,” she added. Her guesstimates are backed by the response she has been getting from the community. The festival has filled all of the spots for ven dors. All 136 stalls along Fraser Highway were booked about a monthThoughago.James said DLBA itself is not raising funds for any cause, there will be some non-profits pres ent for fundraising purposes. Recalling the time she took over the charge of the festival 22 years ago, James said, “it [Arts Alive] was a very small event back then and the festival has just grown over the years – substantially.” James said the free event allows artists and performers to showcase their talent and offers “awesome” food, music, and entertainment to theThecommunity.Aug.20event will run full day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., be tween 204th and 206th Streets on Fraser Highway.

School heading back in just a few weeks, and a program that helps feed kids and fam ilies in need in Aldergrove is also getting ready to resume its fall operations. The Starfish Program’s volunteers provide back packs full of nutritious food to get families through the weekends, benefiting kids at three Aldergrove elementary schools, and as of September, Betty Gilbert Middle as well, said Charlie Fox, the pro gram’s 14,000“We’vecoordinator.givenoutoverbackpacksinthe last six and a half years,” Fox said.Aldergrove Rotary Club organizes and supports the program.Thiswas the first summer that the program partnered with Meals on Wheels during July and August. In the past, the program has given out gift cards for grocery stores, but this year packing and picking up of backpacks con tinued.“From an operations point of view, it has gone well,” Fox said.Meals on Wheels ran a great operation, and even hired the same shopper who selected the foods for the backpacks during the school year, ensuring continuity in the kinds of foods clients couldTheyexpect.packed 71 Starfish backpacks a week, Fox said. The only issue was a slight decrease in the number being picked up, as family’s summer plans disrupted their pick ups from time to time. Now that the program is coming back, students head ing into Betty Gilbert Mid dle’s Grade 6 who are on the program will continue to be accommodated, Fox said. He also expects the schools will be referring more fami lies to the program. “I don’t suspect our back pack numbers will decrease,” Fox said. “We’re seen an in crease in need.”

The other big change this year will be on the fundrais ing“We’veside. had a couple of good fundraisers over the summer,” Fox said. There was a lemonade stand at the Aldergrove Fair dedicated to donations to Starfish that raised $1,000, and a 50/50 draw at the last Fraser Valley Bandits basket ball game brought in about $1,700.Thisfall, the Pasta Party fundraiser will be back for the first time since the pan demic. Supported by Bonetti Meats, it will be held this year on Oct. 29 at the St. Dun stan’s Anglican church hall. “It’s one of our main fund raisers,” said Fox, and they’re glad to be able to hold it again.Inaddition, Rotary clubs in Langley are supporting the program through their 50/50 mega draw, which had more than $220,000 as a jackpot. The draw was set for Aug. 19, so the winner was picked after Langley Advance Times deadlines.Theprogram is ready for an increase in demand if it comes with volunteers, as well. The Aldergrove Communi ty Secondary School (ACSS) hairdressing students are helping out again this year, and at present there’s plenty of hands to help with that end of things, Fox said.

The chapter of Bikers Against Bullying has about 29 member from the Sunshine Coast out as far as Chilliwack. They will get together on short notice to make a public show of support for those being“Thebullied.goalof our ride is to raise awareness that bullying exists – unfortunately now more than ever. It will be a straight haul – no stops so that we can get all groups back as they started – no stragglers!”Beforethey hit the road for the 67 kilometre trek, there will be a mandatory pre-ride safety meeting. “It is a ride for bikes – all bikes and skill levels are wel come, ” Rae explained. “For those who don’t ride, they are welcome to participate if they wish to drive a vehicle for sure. Everyone is welcome to enter a blackberry treat to share at the annual Blackber ryWhileBake-off.sharing is good, a lit tle more effort can go a long way in making the yearly event successful, suggested Alexandra Falconer, garden programs coordinator at Langley Environmental Part ners Society (LEPS). The organizers hope that when people pick their blackberries, they destroy the bushes or at least knock them back enough that it is managed and not spreading, because blackberries are an invasive species. To raise awareness about the impact of the Himalayan blackberry on the environ ment and to enjoy its fruit, LEPS introduced the bakeoff in 2001. After being held virtually in the past two years, the contest is returning to Langley Demonstration Garden on Thursday, Aug. 25. “We are thrilled to be able to host this popular event again. It’s great to welcome the community back to this popular yearly event after having a two-year break,” Falconer said. To participate in the con test, attendees enter their favourite blackberry recipes. LEPS has already received a “great” array of dishes, but blackberry pie, blackberry strudel and blackberry mon key bread are some of Fal coner’s personal favourites. Putting a spotlight on the invasive plant, LEPS team members will talk about its origin and how it became a highly invasive species. “While the fruit is deli cious, the plant itself takes over natural vegetation and threatens local biodiversity,” Falconer explained. She added that LEPS is committed to helping spread awareness about the impact this overly successful plant has on the quicklynance,withoutvines“Himalayanenvironment.blackberryspreadrapidlyandadequatemaintecanovertakeareas”shenoted.Thoseinterestedinparticipatingcanemailgarden@leps.bc.caforalistofrules.Thethree-hour-longeventstartsatnoon.Formoreinformation,peoplecanvisitleps.bc.ca.TheLangleyDemonstrationGardencanbefoundintheDerekDoubledayArboretum,onthenorthside of the 21200 block of Fraser Highway. There’sample parking and the day includes an onsite barbecue, live entertainment, kids activities, and more. This year, the fundraiser – on Sat urday and Sunday, Aug. 27 and 28 at Philip Jackman Park – benefits the family of Daxton, son of Mela nie Arsenault and Jared Skocylas. The Aldergrove family is in the midst of dealing with Daxton’s cancer.Mangat has not yet met the family, but learned of their plight through TikTok, and knew that they could use some extra help. In an email, Arsenault said Dax ton, whose name means “warrior to who conquers great obstacles,” has had to struggle since birth. The little Aldergrove toddler was born prematurely at 23 weeks, in April 2020, weighing just 580 grams (1.28Thepounds).first141 days of his life were spent in a neonatal intensive care unit, where he fought many battles simply to stay alive. His parents were able to bring him home 144 days after his birth. Just 16 days after he turned two in April of this year, they found out that he has a tumour on his liver. Hepatablastoma is a rare form of cancer that usually strikes children four years old and younger. “It’s absolutely devastating to hear your child has cancer. My heart aches for all my son has had to endure in the first two years of life,” Aresenault said. “With four cycles of chemother apy done so far, we are extremely hopeful that the tumour will be safe enough to be resected (surgically removed) soon,” Mom shared. “These are words we are hopeful and optimistic to continue to hear. “Our sweet little boy is the brav est, most fearless, strongest little toddler we know. He loves spending his days on the farm and being with the horses every chance he gets. He spends every minute with his dad that he possibly can. Whether it’s going to the grocery store or for a cruise in the Mustang, he loves his adventures,” she added. “It doesn’t matter how bad of a day he is having, a smile and laugh will appear that lights the entire room up. Nothing brings our little miracle down and he barely skips a beat. He is a force to be reckoned with,” said Mom. Mangat says her family fundraiser at first collected funds to go to the B.C. Cancer Foundation, but now funds go directly to families who need some assistance. “We are so glad we have found someone to help this year.” The Mangats are also appealing to individuals and businesses in the Aldergrove area for help with donations of tents, tables, food, and other items that can be used at the tournament.Atotalof12 teams are taking part in this year’s softball tourna ment.Jodi Mangat can be contacted at jodi8475@gmail.com. And fore more details about the tournament and fundraiser people can visit the Facebook page.

Aldergrove’s Daxton, 2, is fighting a rare form of liver cancer

The latest in a series of fundrais ers by the Mangat family, to help people whose lives have been affect ed by cancer, will take place later this month in Aldergrove. The Mangat family has held fund raisers since 2015, in memory and honour of Jodi Mangat’s mother Surjit Dhillon, who passed away of pancreatic cancer at age 72 in 2014. After her passing, the family de cided they did not simply want to move on, but also remember her by helping others. The family first hosted a series of poker nights at the Aldergrove le gion (the most recent one they held was in June), but this is the second Mangat Family Softball Memorial Tournament they have organized as a fundraiser.“Everythird person is affected by cancer,” Jodi Mangat said. “It was hard losing Mom, but at least she lived to see her grandchildren. We want to help others.”

Melanie Arsenault and Jared Skocylas and their two-year-old son, Daxton. The little boy has had several health challenges and is now fighting a rare form of cancer. (Special to Black Press Media)

Zosia Ettenberg moved to Lang ley many years ago as a physio therapist, but as a person with a physical disability, her experiences accessing public facilities remained the same – often disappointing. Ettenberg had polio as a child. The situation worsened with age, and she ended up requiring a wheel chair.Along-time activist for disability rights and an experienced medical practitioner, Ettenberg was able to identify “many, many” gaps in the system – gaps that make life more difficult for people living with dis abilities, she Determinedsaid.tochange the narra tive around how disability is seen, she founded Langley Pos-Abilities Society 12 years ago with a focus to “celebrate the abilities of people liv ing with disabilities,” she said. She initially started with a ‘per sonal assistance devices program,’ through which her small team col lected used equipment, which were later given to those in need after minor fixes. Two years into her new venture, she started an annual event called Day of Pos-Abilities, which is en tering its eighth year in 2022 after a two-year COVID hiatus. Bringing in the spotlight on the talent of those with mobility issues, the event includes artists, musicians, Paralympians, and more. The event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 20 at Douglas Park. “What we are trying to do is pro mote inclusion,” said Ettenberg, founder and executive director of theEttenbergsociety. said that inclusion is still lacking in society, and it is dis appointing, especially when she sees people using parking spaces intend ed for those with mobility challeng es or when she visits a hotel that is not wheelchair accessible. Focusing on the theme of inclu sion, the society will offer activities like the Try on a Disability (TOAD) challenge and a seminar by the fire chief on how to prepare for disas ters. There will also be a friendly competition between the fire and police personnel, tackling an obsta cle course together. “People living with disability have to think about a lot of things before leaving the house. So if enough help is not available how are they [people with disabilities] going to survive,” Ettenberg commented. She added that the goal is to ed ucate people about inclusion and disability issues through the event. The seminar starts at 1 p.m., but there will be various entertainment activities throughout the day, be ginning at 11 a.m. Artisan crafts, a choir, mouth-watering food, a talent show, and kids’ zone are some of them, Ettenberg shared. With more than 700 people at tending this event each year, Etten berg is hoping to have a successful eighth year. The society is also run ning a 50/50 draw on the same day to raise funds for its work. Cat fanciers congregate at Langley show

Coy Cosburn took her two-year old cat, Sabrina Rose, who won the Bengal cat category, to the Langley show jointly hosted by Cat Fanciers of BC and Garden City Cat Fanciers on Saturday, Aug. 13, and Sunday, Aug. 14. (Tanmay Ahluwalia/Langley Advance Times)

Many attendees at The Internation al Cat Association’s (TICA) Langley cat show were in wonder when twoyear-old Sabrina Rose was taken out of her cage and brought to the front table. They were impressed by the rare and clean rosettes (rose-like forma tions of fur) on Coy Cosburn’s cat. It wasn’t Cosburn and Sabrina’s first time participating in a cat show. In fact, the little cat was recently awarded the title of grand champion in Victoria. But the Vancouver Is land-based pet owner could still feel a “little bit of ner vousness.”Sabrinaand 125 other participating cats were being judged to a standard set by the International Cat Fanciers Association – each getting points based on their features. The higher the points, the higher the chances of getting the champion shipSabrinatitle. was competing in the first class Bengal category, along with seven other cats. “It is a tough competition. It requires great perseverance,” com mented Cosburn. She had been preparing for months for the Therecompetition.wasalotof regular groom ing, shampooing, shredding, and nail clipping involved in the prepara tions, Cosburn shared. When a judge hung a tag that read ‘first’ on Sabrina’s cage, Cosburn was“Itdelighted.isanamazing feeling,” she said. Gillian Huber, the vice president secretary of Cat Fanciers of BC, participated in the two-day competi tion with her two cats. Participating in cat shows throughout the year, pet owners accumulate points at every show. With multiple titles to be award ed, each title requires a certain number of points. For example, it requires 3,000 points for a cat competing in the ‘household pet’ category to win the supreme grand champion award. Jointly hosted by Cat Fanciers of BC and Garden City Cat Fanciers, the took place on Saturday, Aug. 13 and Sunday, Aug. 14 at George Pres ton Recreation Centre. Lineups for the resurrected RibFest started before the gates opened, and continued inside, as people lined up at “Ribbers” (barbecue fans) with names like Smoke Dem Bones, Prai rie Spice, and Boss Hogg’s to sample theirRunningwares.from Friday, Aug. 12, to Sunday, Aug. 14 next to McLeod Athletic Park, it was the first RibFest since 2019, after the four Langley Ro tary clubs that organized the annual fundraising event closed it down for two years in a row due to concerns about COVID-19 Jeff Morfitt, chair of RibFest, said “it’s way bigger than people usu ally expect. When they come in the door, that’s the big surprise, it’s a big event.”Thelast RibFest, in 2019, saw more than 35,000 people enjoy a food-filled family weekend while raising approximately $150,000.

This year, the clubs were hoping to do better, and they did. Attendance was 37,400 guests over the three days, up 15 per cent from 2019. There were 27,720 of the 50-50 tickets available for sale. As of the sales deadline of midnight, Sunday, Aug. 14, a rough estimate put the amount raised at $285,000. Next is the 50/50 Draw, which is set for noon Friday, Aug. 19 at the Derek Dou bleday Arboretum. Half the jackpot will go to the winner, and half will go to charities supported by the four Rotary Clubs in Langley.

“I’m not the type of guy who looks too far in the future,” Zibin told the Langley Advance Times. Which doesn’t mean he didn’t imagine himself in the majors, he clarified, just that he preferred to focus on the work needed to getThisthere.year, after some concentrated effort at the baseball-centric TNXL Academy in Flor ida added some muscle to his frame and speed to his pitching arm, Zibin put his name in the major league baseball draft. At 17, 6’2” and 218 pounds, a right-handed pitcher with a fastball clocked up to 98 miles an hour (along with an effective changeup), Zibin has just be came the youngest player signed by an MLB team this year, a 10th round draft pick who inked a contract with the Cleveland Guard ians for $1.2 million (U.S.). It is believed to be the biggest-ever signing bonus for a 10th round pick. For Zibin, a high point was signing day with the other new drafts in the U.S., when his family was flown in by the team to be with him for the event. “It was awesome,” Zibin commented. Now working under the guidance of Guardians development trainers, Zibin still isn’t looking too far head, concentrating on the immediate steps he needs to take before he next appears on the pitcher’s mound. “In a month, month-and-a-half, I’ll get into my first game,” Zibin estimated. Zibin said he was being “set up to succeed” by the Guardians trainers, who are known for getting good results with young players.

Langley’s Kyle King won the $100,000 CSI3* ONNI Grand Prix 1.50m at Thunder bird Show Park on Sunday. The win came after two almost-victories for King at tbird, the CSI3* tbird Speed 1.45m, where he finished third to Matthew Samp son, and the Maui Jim Grand Prix, where he finished second to Sampson. King and Christine Maclean’s Etalon flew through the timers more than a second faster than his competi tor. Sampson settled for second with Ebolensky (41.98 seconds), with Kara Chad (CAN) and Quidamo F third (42.44) “I’ve been watching Matt. He’s just been kicking my butt every time, and I kind of con sider this my home field, so I was getting a little [upset] about it,” King said. King, who bases his business in Langley, defended his home turf in an exceptionally quick jump-off that saw 14 horses navigate a clear first round. “I saw that [Sampson] was a little bit slow from [fences] one to two,” he said. “I got the same numbers on the rollbacks, and then maybe I was a little quicker to the last jump. I pulled on the reins a little later.”

A celebration of life will be held from 1 – 4pm, Tuesday, September 13, at the Aldergrove Legion and those who knew him are invited to come and share their memories. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Aldergrove Legion would be welcomed. The old sailor will go home to the sea. In loving memory of Bill Holliday

Culley, Amber January 14, 1979 - July 21, 2022 We are devastated with the loss of our beautiful Amber Culley in a tragic & brutal murder on July 21, 2022 in Chilliwack BC. Her dear friend was also murdered and her brother, Aaron survived an attempted murder during this senseless homicide. Amber arrived in this world on a beautiful Sunday morning, January 14, 1979. She was an Angel who simply loved life from the second she arrived. She was a bundle of pure LOVE and joy to all. As she grew-up she was always smiling, laughing & dancing… she made everyone feel happy! We all called her our little Ambeydoe. She was like a gentle fawn. She loved animals & they loved her. She worked in the Fashion Industry, the Cosmetics Field and the Spa Industry. She loved making women feel more beautiful & confident. She made friends everywhere she went dropping stardust all over Sheeveryone.ispredeceased most recently by her partner, TJ, her Grandparents (Magnus & Jacqueline Jorgenson) (George & Edith Culley), her Uncle Dale, her Auntie Kelly, her Mother-in-Law, Carolyn Duquesne and Great Auntie Sheila. 14, 1979 - JULY 21, 2022

Born in Bolton, Lancashire to William and Ellen Holliday, Bill served in World War Two as a tank recovery driver with the REME UK, and witnessed the liberation of Belsen. After the war, he found his true love: the sea. Bill worked as a ship’s engineer on the CPR’s Princess Patricia, and always said he was at home when he was at sea. After coming to Canada in the 1950s, he built his home on the land in Langley, where he made many great friends and was a proud and active member of the Royal Canadian Legion for decades. Bill lived “his way,” independent and strongminded, until he was 92 years old, when he moved into Harrison Landing. His loved ones are grateful for the wonderful care he received there, as well as at Langley Memorial Hospital. Bill was predeceased by his parents and his sister Hilda. He is survived by his nephew David (Erin) and his sister Millicent and many nieces and nephews and their families in the UK.

years there. He married his wife Clara Demko on September 15, 1956, in Eastend, Saskatchewan, and they remained lovingly devoted to each other for some 65 years. Bill worked as City Engineer in Brandon, Manitoba, from 1957-1971; as Engineering Director in Kelowna from 1972-1983; and as Director of Engineering for the Township of Langley, BC, from 19831993. In each of the cities that he worked in, he was deeply committed to the ideals of public service. He retired in 1993, and remained in Langley. In 1976 Bill and Clara found a rustic A-frame cabin at Mabel Lake, BC. It would become their own bit of paradise, a cabin accessible only by boat, situated on a deep-water lake with inland salmon swimming past their front door each summer. After retirement, they would spend every May to October at the lake.

World’s best riders summer at tbird

The $100,000 CSI3* ATCO Cup is one of the elite competitive events that public can enjoy Tanmay Ahluwalia tanmay.ahluwalia@langleyadvancetimes.com

Starting with Summer Fort Welcome, the annual riding se ries will move to Summer Fort Classic and, finally, Summer FortEachFestival.week-long event has distinct features and includes events of various equestrian classes.Thetop events of this year’s series have three grand Prix with total prize money of $250,000.The“big” prize amount has attracted riders from all across North America and Europe, some coming to the event to prepare for their masters, shared Chris Pack, president of Thunderbird Show Park. The public will want to be sure to catch the CSI3* ATCO Cup on Sunday, Aug. 21, offering a winning prize of $100,000, the kind of top money that attracts the top tal ent in the sport. The winner of the third and last of the series – the Sunday, Aug. 28 Paladin Risk Solutions Grand Prix – will take home $50,000.Adding that there is a lot more than sports available for spectators, Pack said his team wants to make sure whomever comes to their facility can enjoy show jumping but also partake of the park’s amenities and at tractions.Theevent will have food trucks, vendors, a beer garden, face painting, and pony rides. “We want to make sure when someones comes to the park with their family… they have a good time. There will be a lot of things to do all day long for families,” he said. In terms of show jumping, the highest levels of events are those categorized as five stars. “The bigger the star rating, the bigger the jumps, the bigger the cash prize,” explained Pack. Two of the upcoming Thun derbird events are three stars, which Pack said makes the event “a high level” competi tion.According to Pack, spectators can expect to see some of the biggest horse jumps at threestar“Theyevents.[the horses] are jump ing 1.6 metres and above.”

Competitions this time of year means there will be about 1,000 horses on scene, and Pack expects about 1,500 spectators for the Sunday cup. “We know people love our events, and they come here year afterPackyear.”added that watching the size of the jumps these horses are capable of will be a surprising and exciting element for first-timers as well as those familiar with the sport.

Thunderbird Show Park is a busy place during the summertime, host ing some of the best riders from around the globe.

In June, the pair won the $5,000 MarBill Hill U25 League 1.35m, taking advan tage of Crown Royal’s height to omit a stride down each of the middle lines in the arena. There is usual ly a big puttinginvolvedteamintogeth er an equestrian event, and when it is about a high-calibre international sporting event like the $100,000 CSI3* ATCO cup, there are hundreds behind the scenes. Those unfamiliar with the sport might feel surprised to learn about some roles that usually don’t come to the lime light very often. Kim McDougall’s cur rent job title isn’t very different from the one she had before retirement. A flight-attended for more than 40 years, Mc Dougall now works as a steward – not for airlines but Equestrian Canada, a national governing body for the sports involving horses.During the competitions, summershewill be working at the Thunder bird Show Park, ensuring literally ‘a fair playing field’ for all the athletes. Making sure the field conditions are always the same for each athlete, McDougall’s job often involves keeping a sharp eye on anything that can alter the playing condi tions. Jan Blackhall will put her decades of experience to good use at a big upcoming competition

Venue rated tops for developing new talents I spent 50 years as a sionalprofes-rider,trainer,andcoach.

The Thunderbird Show Park in Langley will be filled with horses and their riders set to compete in the $100,000 CSI3* ATCO Cup show jumping event on Sunday, Aug. 21.

When Dayton Gorsline rates Langley’s Thunderbird Show Parks as one of the best places for developing young riders in Canada, it is the opinion of the Jumping Youth Development Program advisor for the Eques trian Canada (EC) Jumping Talent ID Program. “It’s a wonderful venue,” Gorsline told the Langley Ad vance Times “Thunderbird, I would say, is the best place in Canada [for developing new riders]. If it’s not the best, it’s in the top two.”

“I don’t know if everyone out there appreciates how good it is, in their backyard.”

Jumper judge ready for tbird cup

Jan Blackhall will be one of the jumper judges over seeing the event as a longtime member of the equestrian community. “It’s my 18th year at Thunderbird as one of their judges,” said Blackhall.“Butbefore that, I spent 50 years as a pro fessional rider, trainer, and coach. I basically did everything that goes into developing young horses for dressage.” With so much of her life invested into the art of show jumping, Blackhall knows exactly what to look for in the con testants this weekend. “Having past experience with horses and riders makes a big dif ference as a judge,” said Blackhall. “It’s much easier to spot any dis crepancies in the equipment, horses, or riders.”

Up and coming riders have an opportunity at tbird to com pete against top riders from the U.S. and Mexico, he noted. “You get good competition out there,” Gorsline observed. “Thunderbird does a great job.”He said the pandemic has hampered some young riders, creating what he called a “weird gap” for the youngest compet itors, in the 12- to 14-year-old category.“Thatage group is a little behind [in competitive experi ence],” he said. With the gap, there are fewer riders ready for competition, he“Asaid.lot of people were a little reluctant to travel,” Gorsline commented.“Itgivesyou a smaller pool.” Gorsline will have an op portunity to see some of the younger riders at tbird, where he and his wife compete. “We brought about 20 hors es,” he estimated.

As part of the 2022 Summer Fort Classic show, the $100,000 CSI3* ATCO Cup brings out a wide va riety of horses in several different classes, which is a large part of what makes the event so interesting and challenging, according to Blackhall. “A big part of the difficulty for these events is the level of training that a horse has had,” she said. The Summer Fort Classic is already un derway, with each day involving riders com peting in either jumper, hunter, or equitation events.Sunday is the culmi nation with $100,000 in prize money up for grabs.Blackhall hopes the event will draw quite the possibleate“Weaudience.reallyappreciasmanypeopleasgatheringtheir families and coming down to these events,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun to see the horses in that way.” Admission to the event costs $11.51 for general admission and is free for children younger than five yearsTicketsold.can be purchased through the tbird website. Gorsline suspects many Lang ley residents aren’t aware they have a world-class equestrian facility.“They [tbird] run their shows to standards that people like me need to see,” Gortsline sum marised.
