Global News reported Monday that according to unnamed sources, McCallum refused to step down from his position on the Surrey Police Board when it asked him to after he was charged on Dec. 10, 2021. His trial is set for Oct. 31, two weeks after the Oct. 15 civic election in which he intends to run for a second consecutive term as mayor. A pre-trial conference has been set for Aug. 31 in Surrey provincial court.

Melissa Granum, executive director of Surrey Police Board, told the Now-Leader on Tuesday that she is “unfortunately” unable to comment “on what the board discusses in-camera.”

Asked if she’s concerned about leaks from within the Surrey Police Board, Granum said she “can’t comment on that. This whole project we’ve … when you look at what’s going on, there’s people who are doing that.

But I’m quite confident in my board.”

Board members could not be reached for comment by deadline Tuesday.

McCallum declined to comment.

He is charged with one count of public mischief contrary to Section 140(2) of the Criminal Code, stemming from an encounter last September between himself and a group that was gathering petition signatures outside the South Point SaveOn-Foods store in South Surrey for a referendum on the policing transition. The mayor claimed a car ran over his foot.

Sanjana Karthik, a student at Semiahmoo, plans to pursue a sociology degree and then a master’s

in restorative justice.

The Guru Nanak Institute of Global Studies was launched in Surrey last week.

The online-only institute, or GNI, aims to be an “academic environment for research and teaching on Sikh philosophy, history, literature, culture, and devotional music in an interdisciplinary manner.”

The non-profit institute is a PTIB, or Private Training Institution Branch, founded in 2021 to commemorate Guru Nanak’s 550th anniversary. Registration is now open for GNI’s three programs, which are Sikh Studies Diploma, Punjabi Studies Certificate and Gurmat Music Diploma.

The provincial government recently staged a press conference, with Surrey-Whalley MLA Bruce Ralston (minister of energy, mines and low-carbon innovation) accompanied by Bob Espey, president and CEO of Parkland Corporation, which runs the Burnaby Refinery. The presser was designed to showcase new initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and building the province’s “clean economy” to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

But that was overshadowed by reporters wanting to know what the government is doing in the here and now to apply the brakes to runaway gas prices.

Parkland operates in 25 countries. Its Burnaby Refinery, Espey said, “helps keep B.C. moving, on the road, on the ocean and in the sky” by supplying roughly one quarter of Greater Vancouver’s gasoline requirements as well as 30 per cent of YVR’s jet fuel.

Asked what can be done to bring prices down at the pumps, Espey noted that the price of energy has gone up globally and is driven in part by “unrest” in Europe pushing the price of crude higher, and sanctions against Russia reducing global supply. “So it’s not just a B.C. phenomenon.”

Still, it’s not lost on British Columbians that they are experiencing the highest gas prices in North America.

“Again, the price of energy in B.C. is determined by the world market and the biggest thing, I would say, to make sure people in B.C. enjoy or have the best economics around energy is to make sure that there’s sufficient manufacturing capacity,” Espey said.

Ralston himself has complained of price gouging at the pumps.

“People feel like they’re being ripped off when they fill up at the gas station. And they’re right,” he told the Now-Leader in 2019.

Espey noted that the price of fuel is dictated by the market, that Parkland is just one of many fuel suppliers, and that there is “plenty of competition” in the market.

“Hence, that’s become the market clearing price,” he said.

Asked what his company can do to ease the pressure on consumers right now, Espey replied that the “key thing is to make sure that there’s available products in the market, which there is, and let the markets dictate the price to the consumer.

“Again, we are in an environment that is inflationary and seeing prices dictated by items that are out of our local control. Like I said, the situation is Europe right now is really driving the dramatic price increases we’re seeing across Canada at this point.”

Asked why the market is dictating grossly higher gas prices in B.C. compared to, say, Washington State, or Alberta, Espey noted taxes are different in each market “and those fit the regulatory regime of each area and their

goals associated with that revenue stream, so it’s not something that’s within control of an organization like Parkland.”

Ralston said the rise in the price of fuel, given the war in Ukraine, is “completely unprecedented.

“It’s across Canada, it’s across North America, it’s across Europe and the additional ingredient of a boycott of Russian oil by even in the European Union will shrink supply globally as well which will have an impact on price,” Ralston said. Here in B.C., he added, the provincial government is providing motorists with a $110 gas rebate.

But that’s no comfort for Sahota.

“They’re blaming Ukraine,” Sahota sighed. “I could be wrong, but I haven’t seen Zelenskyy getting up in the B.C. Legislature and say OK, we’re going to increase the gas tax in B.C. by 10 cents. It’s all our own B.C. politicians who have been doing that.”

The NDP, Sahota noted, is in its second mandate, “and for a party that has been running on affordability, well you know, affordability sure is taking a big hit. Real estate, housing, and gas prices, food prices, who’s being hit? The average person. They’re all pulling these six-figure salaries and everybody else is suffering.”

Perception is everything T he laws of physics play out hard and fast.

Political science, on the other hand, is more akin to art – the art of knowing when to do this, or to not do that.

At what point along the continuum of political problems does a politician conclude that the temperature has grown too hot to stay in office, too cold to carry on?

Surrey’s Mayor Doug McCallum is facing a doozy of a problem – heading into an election campaign while charged with public mischief, not to mention chairing a police board with that same criminal charge hanging over him.

At what point does a politician decide that personal interests and aspirations must be put aside for the better good of the community he or she serves?

While some are relatively quick to arrive at

what must be a difficult decision to call it a day, others will hang onto power by their fingertips.

In McCallum’s case, he has not been found guilty of a crime. Nevertheless, some say his pending trial, to be held two weeks after the civic election, is creating an untenable distraction from the city’s business, while others claim his situation is damaging Surrey’s brand.

In politics, they say, perception is everything.

A politician, ostensibly, seeks office to improve the lot of the community he or she serves. An astute politician will be keenly aware, if they are worth their salt, of the truth concerning their moral authority as opposed to having worn out their welcome.

Only McCallum can decide where he now sits on that spectrum.

On the question of whether Canada should continue as a constitutional monarchy, opinions have shifted from somewhat pro-monarchy in 2016 (42 per cent yes and 20 per cent unsure) to a slight majority favouring the change. Over half of Canadians in April 2022, 51 per cent, would opt to end our official relationship with the British Crown. Even in British Columbia, the proportion of anti-monarchists is almost half (45 per cent).

Yet there are too many factors in favour of keeping our connections to British traditions to conclude that Canada will follow Jamaica and Barbados’ lead.

The very nature of our political system is deeply entwined with the British system, from our elections and parliamentary procedure to our courts. Our connection to the crown is not merely political though.

It is also a powerful cultural and

economic connection. Culturally, one could argue that Canadians lie on the cultural continuum somewhere between Britain and America when it comes to education, spelling, grammar and even humour. It may in fact explain why so many Canadian comics are popular in America; that wry, self-deprecating sense of humour.

Economically, the case for keeping our ties to the monarchy is strongest in the most British of Canadian provinces, British Columbia. Double-decker buses, high tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel, and a host of place names harkening back to “the olde country” that attract millions of tourists each year. Those millions of tourists bring in billions of dollars.

The complex historic relationship between First Nations and the Crown should also give pro-republican Canadians pause. Many of the treaties created when the

Finally, there is a platinum lining in the Angus Reid polling: the “platinum Jubilee” being celebrated by Queen Elizabeth II this summer. Opinions of Queen Elizabeth are quite favourable (63 per cent positive). However, if the crown passes to Prince Charles, two third of Canadians oppose recognizing him as our King and head of state.

The fate of the monarchy in Canada may depend on the ascension of Charles’s son, Prince William, who commands twice the level of admiration than his father among his Canadian “subjects.”

She states she did her homework.

Well, her homework was not done well enough.

She criticizes today’s RCMP mostly for issues from decades ago instigated by politicians and also condemns them for recent actions by the Vancouver Police Department.

If you “shoot your gun” in criticism, please aim accurately – and check your ammunition.

The letter writer reminds me of the student who came to class and proudly announced that she had done her homework, only to find out when it was checked that it was full of errors.

Was she not paying attention when the grandfather and child who tried to open a bank account were arrested by members of a municipal police force and not the RCMP? And, regarding the past, how do you blame the police force that is following orders laid down by government policy at the time? It’s like blaming the messenger who has to deliver an unwanted message.

B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating a police shooting on a busy Surrey street following calls about a woman with a weapon Tuesday afternoon (May 24).

According to a release from BC RCMP, officers were called to the 10500-block of King George Boulevard “for a report of a woman with a weapon.” Police say officers found the woman in the 10400-block of King George Boulevard “who was reportedly still in possession of the weapon.”

Police say “during an interaction” between the woman and police, she was shot by police.

The woman, according to police, was taken to hospital “with what are believed to be serious injuries.”

BC RCMP say it has notified the province’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., while the Surrey RCMP’s general investigation section is conducting its own Criminal Code investigation.

Meantime, Katie Gartley told the Now-Leader she was taking an Uber home from work when she saw the shooting happen.

“The woman, she was kind of swinging her arms around and she had an object in her left hand … it didn’t look like a gun to me.”

A man was hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries following gunfire in a home in Surrey on Saturday.

Police responded to a report of a gunshot fired in a home at around 9:50 a.m. in the 13700block of Grosvenor Road in

A Transit cop has been charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm in connection with a crash on Nov. 4, 2020 involving an unmarked Transit Police SUV and a sedan.

Dan McLaughlin, communications counsel with the BC Prosecution Service, said Const. Randeep Randhawa will appear in Surrey provincial court on June 15.

“As this matter is now before the court the BCPS will not be releasing additional information or commenting further at this time,” McLaughlin said.

The late-night crash happened at 128th Street and 93rd Avenue in Cedar Hills as the officer was responding to another officer’s request for help to catch a man who’d escaped police custody.

The City of Surrey says “all potholes will be filled by June 1” after crews received more than twice the usual requests in a season.

A tweet from the city on Thursday (May 19) notes “the unusually long & cold winter resulted in 4,000 requests for pothole repair– more than twice a typical season.”

Ray Kerr, the city’s manager for engineering operations, said this past winter Surrey “experienced over 12 independent snowfalls.”

“The city also experienced numerous days below zero degrees Celsius, with three days being continuously below -10 Celsius,” he said in an emailed statement from the city.

Meantime, the City of Surrey has developed a paving program “to repave roads with high concentrations of previously repaired potholes.

Kerr said crews will have all potholes filled by June 1 “on at least a temporary basis, with permanent asphalt repairs continuing over the summer.”

‘Nothing normal’ about City of Surrey’s ‘suppression of political dissent,’ lawyer says Tom Zytaruk tom.zytaruk@surreynowleader.com

Surrey residents challenging the constitutionality of city bylaw amendments that govern the placement of political signs on private property await a verdict that was reserved after final arguments were heard May 18 in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver.

“I have no clue when I’ll get a judgment to you,” Justice Nigel Kent said after adjourning the case.

“But I will in due course, thank you.”

Lawyer Kevin Smith, representing the plaintiffs, argued that the bylaw as amended on Oct. 18, 2021 presents an unconstitutional infringement on their freedom of expression under Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

“This is not just political disagreement,” Smith told the judge. “This isn’t a couple of political adversaries going at it in the normal cutand-thrust.

“All they’re trying to do is make it harder for my clients to participate or to voice their views at all,” he said of Mayor Doug McCallum and “his council supporters.”

“There’s nothing normal about that. This suppression of political dissent by the government is exactly what the Charter is supposed to help prevent.”

The petition was launched

by Surrey residents Annie Kaps, Debra (Debi) Johnstone, Colin Pronger, Ivan Scott, Merle Scott and

Linda Ypenburg, all members of Keep the RCMP in Surrey. The amended bylaw resulted in them removing related signage from their properties but their petition to the court states they are challenging the amendments to the sign bylaw “not for personal reasons, but in an effort to protect political speech and expression in the City.”

Smith argued the amendments were “part of a continuing pattern of behaviour that discloses animus, bias and various steps by the mayor and his supporters to silence the opposition of the petitioners.”

Matthew Voell, the lawyer representing the City of Surrey, argued the contentious bylaw amendments were driven by city staff recom-

mendations, and “not driven by animus, by council, by the mayor.”

“There was no improper purpose there,” Voell argued.

“The petition should be dismissed.

“The petitioners appear to want change in the city – they can effect change at the ballot box.”

Voell told Kent that the constitutional challenge was brought forward for “political purposes” and “this is a manufactured dispute.”

Meantime, Smith said it’s “crystal clear” that no permits “can be obtained, I suggest both for the public and the private land signs.”

“No one, not even the councillors, knows what this bylaw says,” he added.

“There is considerable confusion, even within the city.”

Man charged in historical sexual assault case in Cloverdale Surrey RCMP seek info regarding alleged sexual assaults from 1980s Malin Jordan Black Press Media

A South Surrey man has been charged in relation to sexual assault allegations from the mid-1980s.

Mounties charged 68-yearold Brian Robert Walks on March 13 with one count of sexual assault. The assaults are alleged to have happened in Cloverdale at both Christ Church Surrey Centre and Christ the Redeemer Anglican Parish.

Now Mounties are “seeking additional information from anyone who attended the church during that time,” Cpl. Vanessa Munn, Surrey RCMP media relations officer, said in a press release

“Although the alleged incident occurred more than 30 years ago, we believe that there are likely people in the community who attended the church and may have ad-

ditional information,” added Munn. “Anyone with information, especially those who attended the named churches in the 1980s are asked to contact the Surrey RCMP.” As recently as 2018, Walks was the publicity person for St. Mark’s Ocean Park, an Anglican church in South Surrey. For years, he was an organizer of the church’s Journey of Christmas display each holiday season.

Munn said police received a report July 8, 2021, about the alleged assaults.

“The alleged sexual assaults occurred between 1985-1988 and involved a young female child who was attending the Sunday school program,” Munn said in the release. “At the time of the (alleged) offence, the accused was a member of the church committee and Synod Delegate.”

In a statement issued through the Anglican Diocese of New Westminster’s senior legal officer, Bishop John Stephens said “I am deeply saddened by the disturbing information released by the Surrey RCMP… concerning an historical sexual assault in the 1980s at one of the parishes of the Diocese

of New Westminster.”

“The accused is a lay leader in our diocese. No complaint alleging misconduct on the part of the accused has ever been received by either the diocese, the parish where he worshipped at the time or his current parish,” Stephens continued.

“However, if a criminal complaint is raised, the diocese defers to and respects the integrity of that process.

Allegations of sexual abuse directed toward clergy and lay of our diocese are taken very seriously and action immediately taken.”

The statement goes on to say that when the accusation came to light earlier this spring, Walks was contacted in writing and informed that “effective immediately and until further notice” he was relieved of all ministry responsibilities.

the public interest and both sides should pay their own tab.

In her reasons for judgment, Tucker found in her analysis that evidence demonstrates the prospect of building the connector “has consistently given rise to contentious public debate and opposition whenever proposed or raised for discussion over the past 20 years.

“Given two decades of signifi-

cant public opposition, it was to the benefit of the public – and likely to the city itself – to have the status of the land determined,” she added.

“I am satisfied that it is appropriate for the parties to bear their own costs of the proceeding,” Tucker concluded.

“The parties will each bear their own costs throughout.”

Nearly a year after he was last seen, Surrey RCMP have put out another call for information about a missing Surrey man.

Bernard Grempel, 29, was last seen at 22nd Street SkyTrain Station in New Westminster on May 14, 2021, according to a release from Surrey RCMP Cpl. Vanessa Munn.

Munn said that leading up to Grempel’s disappearance, “investigators have confirmed that Bernard entered the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station at 10:31 p.m., took the SkyTrain and arrived at the 22nd Street station.” at 10:53 p.m.

She added that investigators believe Grempel boarded the 340 bust at 10:59, which travels to Scottsdale Exchange in Surrey.

“Despite extensive video canvassing, police were not able to confirm where Bernard disembarked the bus.”

A few hours earlier, at 8:44 p.m., he was at a 7-Eleven in Guildford, not far from where he lives, in the 10000-block of 150 Street.

Grempel, police say, was last seen on video wearing red sweatpants, a white hoodie, blue medical mask and black-and-white Nike runners.

He is six feet tall, with a slim build and curly brown hair and brown eyes.

At the time of Grempel’s disappearance, Surrey RCMP said he is “apprehend-able” under the Mental Health Act. “Thank you to the public for all the tips that we have received over the past year and continue to receive,” said Munn.

His family first posted about the reward in 2021, then $20,000.

The family was raising the funds through GoFundMe. At the time of launching the GoFundMe, Grempel’s sister Ettie Shurack said that in addition to police efforts, they hired a private investigator to help expand the search.

“My brother is a wonderful, kind, and caring person and a real family guy. He is a great son to my parents, an awesome brother to me, a doting uncle to my children, and a loyal friend to his buddies. We are really worried about Bernard, we really miss him.”

The family has also created a Facebook group, Let’s Find Bernard Grempel, which has nearly 800 members.

Currently there is a consitutional challenge, of a Surrey bylaw governing political signage, that was recently heard in B.C. Supreme Court (see page 17).

Surrey’s last civic election, in 2018, was marred with allegations of election fraud related to mail ballot applications, leading to a seven-month investigation by the Surrey RCMP. The corporate report notes that in the 2018 election roughly 700 eligible voters qualified to vote by mail-in ballot. As per the Surrey Elections Bylaw, mail-in ballot voting is limited to voters with special needs, such as residents in care facilities and hospital patients who can’t get to a voting station.

But provincial and federal elections during the pandemic saw significant increase in mail-in voting, resulting in city hall estimating that 17,000 Surrey voters could vote by mail this time out.

Exhibit of movie, game statues explores Surrey’s cultural shift in 1980s and ’90s

By showcasing nearly two dozen of his movie and game character statues, Dilber Mann aims to tell a story of growing up in Surrey and exploring a pop-culture world of the 1980s and 1990s.

For Mann and his fellow Generation-Xers, discovering that world wasn’t always easy then, before the internet and SkyTrain opened doors.

“Being able to go to Burnaby and Vancouver and visiting the Japanese animation shops, that was huge,” said Mann, whose “Inspiration X” is the latest Community Treasures exhibit at the Museum of Surrey.

“My friends and I, we were from all sorts of different ethnic backgrounds and we all got together every second Sunday,” he recalled. “We called it Funday Sunday and we’d go on SkyTrain and make our way downtown or wherever and start to expose ourselves to all this content. Our common appreciation of that made us kind of appreciate each other, and we became really good friends with none of the racial tension you’d see in different ethnicities. We overcame that. This is part of the story here.”

Mann’s exhibition, which opened Tuesday (May 24) and continues until fall, features his collection of large-scale pop culture statues, many of them limited-edition.

There are Yoda and Luke Skywalker statues from the “Star Wars” franchise, “Alien” movie collectibles, Decepticons from “Transformers,” some “Batman” and “X-Men” memorabilia and “Warhammer” game characters, too, all of which inspired Mann to work in the entertainment industry.

“I’ve been collecting quarter-scale and above statues since my first purchase in 2005 of Gandalf from ‘Lord of the Rings,’” explained Mann, who has more 20 years of experience in the entertainment, interactive media and video game industries, and is an executive board member for an international gaming company.

Now a Morgan Crossing-area resident, Mann says various landmarks in Surrey, including the Guildford mall theatre, Famous Players in Guildford, the SkyTrain and Comic Scene comic store, all play a part in the experiences he wants to share at the Museum of Surrey.

“I’m really proud of the narrative that we put together for the exhibit,” Mann underlined. “People talk about diversity and inclusion as buzz words these days, but until I put together this exhibit, I didn’t understand that I experienced a lack of inclusion because of being a minority. So going to Guildford mall and connecting

with people and just watching a movie, that was our version of being included and having inclusion. Then Famous Players came out, and all of these kind of unifying experiences helped build cultural acceptance.”

The museum’s Community Treasures exhibits give community groups, individuals and cultural organizations in Surrey a chance to showcase their treasures and share their stories with a wider audience, at 17710 56A Ave. in Cloverdale.

Back in the ’80s and early ’90s, technology was exploding, but access to entertainment was not what it is today.

“I tell my kids those stories and they don’t understand – a fouryear-old and a nine-year-old,” Mann said. “The kids have access to everything, on the internet or wherever, and my youngest doesn’t know what discrimination is,” he added.

“But we grew up in a different time, and my story is a soft story. Like, I have older siblings, and we’d go to Guildford Park Secondary to pick them up from school and people would be jumping up on our car and bashing it, and it would be just a rush to get out of school. That’s how it was in the early ’80s. And my parents, my dad went through a lot growing up in the 60s and 70s growing up in North Van, not able to go anywhere without someone trying to cause a ruckus.

Those are other stories, but this is my story about how I discovered this world of movies and animé.”

The first-ever White Rock Jazz and Blues Festival is set for a weekend in June, marking the city’s return to in-person live music shows.

Jazz music is typically performed in an ensemble, with a lively sound perfect for swing dancing, while blues

songs tend to be slower, with a melancholy feel. Whatever your taste, both styles will be performed at this family-friendly event – during the day, outdoors and in the evenings, indoors.

Canadian rock band Arkells will headline Surrey’s first in-person Canada Day event since 2019.

Cloverdale’s Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre will host the free festivities on Friday, July 1 for 11 hours, starting at 10 a.m.

Surrey Art Gallery’s spring/summer shows include “ARTS 2022,” a 38th juried exhibition showcasing diverse artistic talents of established and emerging visual artists from across the Lower Mainland.

Admission is free to see the 52 works on view until July 24, including painting, drawing, fabric work, sculpture and video.

Following the shift to a digital version of ‘ARTS’ in 2020, this year’s exhibit is shown on both the Arts Council of Surrey’s website (artscouncilofsurrey. ca) and throughout Surrey Arts Centre, at Bear Creek Park.

Tasked with selecting from more than 200 entries, this year’s ‘ARTS’ jurors were textile artist Diane Roy, Surrey art teacher Jane Silversides and Surrey Art Gallery’s volunteer program co-ordinator, Chris Dawson-Murphy.

The exhibit features everything from traditional paintings of landscape and animal life to stop-motion animation. With such a broad range of styles and themes, the annual ‘ARTS’ show is a popular draw among gallery-goers, invited to vote for the People’s Choice Award to be announced at the end of the exhibition.

“ARTS is a critical part of Surrey’s creative community,” says the gallery’s assistant curator, Rhys Edwards.

This year’s ‘ARTS’ officially opens at SAG on June 19, also the launch date of “Mere Phantoms: Shadows Without Borders,” created by Maya Ersan and Jaimie Robson.

In 2018 the duo created their mobile, interactive shadow installation, which travelled to refugee camps, squats and settlements in Athens and Istanbul.

“Building on previously established relationships, ‘Mere Phantoms’ led paper cutting and shadow workshops and play sessions with children in these communities,” notes a post on surrey.ca/ artgallery.

Launching in lateJune, Atheana Picha’s new “Echoes” window mural will be shown at the gallery entrance for

a year, to celebrate “the cultural importance of Coast Salish mountain goat horn bracelets and the significance the animal has to the people from this territory.”

Until May 29 Surrey Art Gallery features photographer Rajesh Vora’s “Everyday Monuments,” a look at whimsical rooftop sculptures found in India.

They’re shaped like airplanes, birds, soccer balls, cars, army tanks, weightlifters, horses and other objects, made from rebar, wire mesh, cement and paint.

For a couple of decades, both in and around his photo studio in Whalley, Roy Houghton focused his cameras on community events, students and business of North Surrey.

From the 1950s to 1970s he photographed the opening of Surrey’s very first McDonald’s restaurant, among other landmark events in the area – fundraising efforts, the construction of new amenities, memorial celebrations, weddings and more.

The sport of kabaddi is starting to take root at Surrey-area high schools, with eyes on a provincial prize one day.

The all-Surrey spring league currently involves five teams representing Panorama Ridge, Tamanawis, Enver Creek, Queen Elizabeth and Khalsa School, with Panorama Ridge the twotime defending champion.

Raman Bedi, a teacher at the Newton school and co-coach of its kabaddi team, also serves as league president and co-ordinator of matches.

“There are strong roots in this sport, and a lot of people are passionate about it,” Bedi said Tuesday, May 17, after his Thunder team beat Khalsa 46-24 on the grass at Panorama Ridge, after school was out for the day.

“That’s why we have so many people come out to watch, and that includes students, parents, grandparents and just people who live in the area. Having it in the schools like this, there’s been a really fast ripple effect, with so many generations involved.”

Popular in India and surrounding countries, kabaddi is a wrestling-like sport played on a circular field. A single player on offense, known as a “raider,” runs into the other team’s half-court to tag an opponent, or be tagged, and must return to the centre line to score a point, without being tackled and held by a “stopper,” or pushed out of bounds. The op-

Five years ago the high school kabaddi league started with four teams, then expanded to eight before the pandemic shut down everything. This spring, there are five teams.

“I’m sure momentum is going to pick up again, and hopefully we see teams in other schools, other areas,” said Bedi, who credits Mandeep Dhaliwal for work to get the school kabaddi league started in 2017.

“It was a process to get this going and making it a recognized and governed sport through both the SSSAA (Surrey Secondary Schools Athletic Association) and South Fraser Athletics Association,” Bedi said. “A few of us (teachers) played supporting casts to Mandeep, who advocated and spent countless hours getting this going.”

Mitchell Garrett’s dream of playing on Canada’s national para-hockey team will push him to train hard this spring and summer, while starting a new job upon graduation from BCIT. The Surrey resident was among 29 players invited to a Hockey Canada-hosted development camp in Montreal last month, and it went very well, according to Garrett.

“I was working toward a national team invite, and I have a feeling that’s now happening, so it feels really good,” said the 27-year-old goaltender.

“There are a lot of really good things happening right now.”

Garrett was among four netminders at the NextGen camp, held at Aréna Howie-Morenz from April 25-29, and one of two British Columbians invited to hit the ice, along with Vancouver-based skater Matteo Pellizzari.

A lifelong Fraser Heights-area resident, Garrett played hockey in Cloverdale starting at age 10, after a couple seasons of baseball and soccer. He was a goalie on the ice, and by age 12 had committed to playing hockey exclusively.

“I went full-force on hockey and quit baseball and soccer,” he recalled in a phone conversation.

“I’ve always bled hockey, to be honest, and I’ve never known anything different. I never wanted to do anything else, pretty much. So with the national team, I just want to get there, and I’m going to train for it all summer. I just got approved for ice times twice a week at 6:30 a.m. at Langley Sportsplex.”

On a July day five years ago, in 2017, Garrett was seriously injured while camp-

“It was just a regular weekend up there with my buddies,” he recalled. “We had an ATV there and I took it out and didn’t return. They found the ATV with me in the ditch. With final tests at BCIT in late May, these are busy days for Garrett.

“I’ll be fully graduated by then,” he noted. “If it all happens as planned, hopefully we’ll win nationals, I’ll be graduating from BCIT and the following week I’ll start a full-time position, SEO co-ordinating, with Jelly Digital Marketing and

PR, in Fort Langley.”

Para-hockey nationals will be played in Leduc, Alta., involving teams representing provinces.

“I’ll be playing for Team Alberta,” Garrett revealed.

“B.C. doesn’t really have a team,” the B.C.-born goaltender explained, “because B.C. is a bit of mess right now in terms of organization and structure, and there are some good players here and we could use some more. In terms of getting noticed and making that national-team push, B.C. just doesn’t have the connections that Alberta does. Because of those connections Alberta sledge has, I’ve been skating with them and competing with them at nationals.

“I’m playing on a really good team with a good chance to win the tournament, which is very motivating for me,” he added.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to play there, with (Hockey Canada) coaches watching.”
