A man who allegedly ran across the U.S. border into Langley with a loaded handgun was Tasered by police earlier this month.

The incident began when local Mounties were alerted to an illegal crossing on foot in the 24300block of Zero Avenue just before 7 a.m. on March 4.

The first RCMP officer on the scene found a silver Infiniti G37 with California licence plates Largy abandoned just on the American side of the border, facing north.

City backs Township put up a parking lot Ukraine Neighbours upset part of a park cleared to make room for staff vehicles

Langley City council has unanimously voted to support the Ukraine.

At the Monday, March 7, council endorsed a motion made by Mayor Val van den Broek to forward a letter of support to the consul general of Ukraine in Vancouver, and the provincial and federal governments.

It said that “Russia has invaded Ukraine, a sovereign nation with a democratically elected government; and whereas the City of Langley wants to support the people of Ukraine as well as the residents of Ukrainian origin in Langley and elsewhere, therefore be it resolved that a letter of support for Ukraine be forwarded.”

Storteboom Councillor Rudy Storteboom said he normally wouldn’t endorse something beyond the municipal mandate, but “in this case we’ve got a Russian president who is threatening nuclear war and that affects the whole world, including Langley City.”

The Kremlin has raised the specter of nuclear war, reporting that its land, air and sea nuclear forces were on “high alert.”

Storteboom suggested the City’s letter also be sent to the Russian consul general in Ottawa.

“I’m desperately against invading another country,” Storteboom remarked.

Van den Broek, who is Ukrainian on her father’s side, has spoken at several local events to decry the invasion ordered by Russian leader Vladimir Putin, calling him a “war criminal.”

Van den Broek has relatives living in the Ukraine, near Odessa and Chernobyl whom she has described as “terrified,” but determined to stay.

More than a million Ukrainians call Canada home, and in the 2016, about four per cent of people in Canada, who responded to the national census, identified as being of Ukrainian descent.

A former head of Langley Township’s operations department is upset that trees are being cut down in a municipal park, apparently to create more parking for civic staff.

Rene Payer lives in Murrayville, not far from the Township’s operations centre on 224th Street.

Behind the operations centre is Old Yale Park, a large swathe of green space with walking trails, some ponds, and a community garden.

When some trees on the north end of the park near the Operations Centre started being cut down in early March, the Payers asked staff leaving the operations centre what was happening, and were told the area was being converted into a temporary gravel parking lot.

“We feel a little bit betrayed,” Payer said.

He noted that the neighbours had been involved in consultations when the park was first created several years ago, and had a hand in deciding its form.

A memo written by the Township’s engineering division to Township council on March 10 set out the reasons for the parking expansion.

Currently, there are 214 parking stalls at the Operations Centre, but when all the departments are fully staffed, many workers have to park on nearby residential streets,

To make more room, 1,000 square metres south of the Operations Centre is to be turned into 27 additional stalls, on a temporary basis.

The site will be screened by new trees from park users, and it won’t affect the trail system.

Payer said he knows the operations yard needs more parking.

Right now, a number of staff members park on the side of the road on 224th Street every day.

“I’m not crazy about that,” Payer said.

But he’s even less happy

It is extremely disappointing that municipal staff would consider taking over part of the park without any consultation.

down before the March 15 provincial bird nesting window, if council wants to go through with the plan, the memo said.

“It is extremely disappointing that municipal staff would consider taking over a part of the park without any consultation,” Payer wrote.

He said that he hopes the Township will set up a satellite operations yard somewhere else in the Township. Given the size of the Township, he said it was something staff were always asking for back in his day, as it would cut travel time to and from the yard to various job sites. A location in Walnut Grove or Aldergrove would help, Payer said.

The memo to council suggests that is something that staff are looking into, as it would allow them to deliver services more efficiently, as well as helping with the parking congestion.

KPU adding 115 nurses School’s 249 nursing spots about to jump More than 100 new nursing seats will be available at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Langley campus starting in 2023.

The 40 bachelor of science in nursing advanced entry seats, 40 bachelor of psychiatric nursing seats and 35 graduate nurse internationally educated re-entry seats represents a significant expansion of KPU’s existing nursing seat provision. The university currently offers 249 seats annually.

The 115 new nursing seats added at KPU were part of 602 new nursing seats added in B.C. “Not only is this wonderful news of more opportunities for students who want a career in nursing, but it will also ultimately provide much needed nurses for Lee our communities as well,” said Sharmen Lee, KPU’s Faculty of Health dean.

Preparation has begun for the first intake of students. The Faculty of Health will start many of the new seats at different times of the academic year to existing seats to provide more start times and to effectively distribute physical resources to maintain the same high quality learning experience on campus for them.

Animals at the Greater Vancouver Zoo may be showing signs of stress in captivity, the Vancouver Humane Society claims in a new video released in early March.

The video shows footage recorded between 2016 and 2022, and includes footage of animals at the Vancouver Aquarium as well.

“We have a number of concerns,” said Emily Pickett, campaign director at the Humane Society.

The issues are mainly repetitive behaviours and pacing, including a giraffe licking the bars of its enclosure, big cats including a tiger and a lion pacing in their cages.

Repetitive behaviours in captive animals can be a sign of stress, according to the Humane Society.

The Humane Society is also worried about the

length of time the two hippos at the zoo, male Haben and female Hazina, have been separated, Pickett said. A sign at the zoo indicated they had been separated after Haben tried to assert dominance and the hippos began fighting.

The Humane Society has long been opposed to the conditions at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. Pickett noted that the

society has sent the zoo a number of reports over the years with a range of recommendations.

Ultimately, the society would like to see the zoo and the Vancouver Aquarium move away from housing and displaying exotic animals altogether.

No perfect measures D

uring the last two years, B.C.’s health authorities have undoubtedly made mistakes in their measures to protect our citizens from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was inevitable. It was an entirely new virus, about which very little was known. It then mutated into a series of new variants, so the learning process had to begin again over and over and over. Omicron was not the same as delta, which was not the same as original coronavirus.

Now, a week after the mask mandates have fallen away and a couple of weeks until the vaccine passports are done away with, we’re still waiting to see how this current rule loosening works out.

We may see a slight rise in cases. We may see a larger rise – a signal that we need to pull back and increase safety measures again. Or we may see the virus continue to recede into the background of our lives.

It has been easy for some people to rage angrily against restrictions all this time – after all, not everyone is seriously affected by COVID, even if they are infected. It has also been easy for many who still have reasonable fears of the virus – especially the vulnerable, seniors and those with compromised immune systems – to worry that any relaxation of restrictions will drastically increase risks.

The week before Dr. Bonnie Henry announced her changes to the rules, Langley had 35 positive tests for COVID-19. That’s down from the record 936 cases we saw in the last week of December.

We cannot say with certainty that we are out of the woods. There might be more variants to come, and there might be more risk than some are willing to accept even now.

But we have to acknowledge that we are in a far, far better position than we were less than three months ago. There are, unfortunately, no measures that will satisfy everyone. But if we are to roll back restrictions, it seems now is the time.

Nostalgia is a heck of a drug.

You may have noted that there’s not much paternalistic advice going the other direction.

In general, conservative movements (and social democratic ones, as with the NDP, Bernie Sanders, etc.) tend to have a more clear-eyed view of their opponents.

First, they recognize that they are opponents, enemies in the political arena. It is not their job to offer a helping hand. It’s their job to convince more voters to put a mark for their candidates’ names, and then to put in legislation that their supporters want. In fact, if their opponents are in disarray and tripping over their own feet, that’s a great state of affairs for them!

Politics is about changing minds and changing laws. It’s not about “helping” the folks on the other side of the aisle.

Tax increase not inconsequential Dear Editor, Re: [City tax hike gets approval, Langley Advance Times, March 10] Notwithstanding the pleas of Mayor Val van den Broek, and Councillors Gayle Martin and Rudy Storteboom, City council has decided to further burden the owners of single-family homes with a tax increase of $349 – part of which is to fund an environmental sustainability coordinator at a cost of $127,500.

The tax rate for all residential properties cannot be differentiated because the province dictates the formula by which taxes are levied.

The assessment of single-family homes in the City increased by 38 per cent and in multi-family homes by 19 per cent.

The result is the average single-family home is saddled with a $349.99 increase and the average multi-family will have a decrease in taxes.

Councillor Pachal stated: “the longer we wait, the

more it’s going to cost.”

Taking that thinking to its ultimate conclusion one could argue that we should upgrade all roads and services now, because it will cost more to do so in the future.

Councillor Albrecht stated that the coordinator will add just $10 more to the average tax bill.

Councillor Albrecht lives in a condo and might well see a decrease in his taxes.

Both Councillors Albrecht and Pachal are well employed.

Ten dollars is inconsequential to their lifestyle.

But when you die from a thousand cuts, how do you know which cut killed you?

Media reported on March 12 that one third of B.C families are struggling to pay for higher food prices.

I would appeal to Councillors James and Wallace to think of those families who are struggling and vote against this increase in taxes.

Just noticed developers taking down a bunch more trees.

My question is when is our council going to stop these developers from taking down every tree in Langley?

Now it seems they have their eyes on 200th.

Perhaps Fraser Health Authority can rethink parking fees for staff ?

It’s great that we aren’t required to wear masks in public spaces. Our new normal is shifting again.

But hey, COVID-19 is still with us. There are still COVID patients in our ICUs and some who do not come home.

The nurses and doctors are still working tired and exhausted from long shifts, short staffed.

They need our support, not this.

To Langley City council, Re: [City tax hike gets approval, Langley Advance Times, March 10] It was very disappointing to read that the majority of the council did not seem to listen to the voters regarding keeping the taxes down in this very financially challenging time for most of the voters of Langley City.

There is still time on March the 21st to have this changed.

And the voters will remember this with the upcoming election.

To have Councillor Albrecht saying it is just $10 a year on most tax bills shows me that some councillors are out of touch with the real world.

There are a lot more price increases this year fuel prices (over $2 per litre), carbon taxes, property tax increases ($349 for most single-detached houses), home improvement prices (yes, some people do own homes), grocery prices, and home insurance (and yes most people have to pay this).

These are only a few.

So yes, $10 more is a lot if you don’t have all this.

It all adds up.

So again I urge the council to reconsider this proposal and see how they can keep the tax rate down.

Countries can’t sit idly by as Putin wreaks havoc Dear Editor, Ukraine and Russia are at war while certain countries in the world are not taking sides to condemn the action Russia has taken.

Let there be no question, Russia has moved on Ukraine without provocation with intent also to cause casualties against the civilians of Ukraine. Missiles are being targeted into civilian populated areas and

Putin has his finger on the trigger guiding them with his act of war.

Putin has used a tactic as what Hitler did in the Second World War to justify his actions, and he must think the world is stupid not to see through it and recognize insanity is part of his DNA.

There are countries that sit idly by because they may have economic ties with Russia, who sit silently not condemning the actions that Putin has taken.

I would suggest we, as Canadians, stop at this moment from purchasing any of their domestic products or travelling to their countries.

Canada has moved against Putin as well as other countries, but why should we – as Canadians who shop, travel, and spend our money – support any of these other countries who cannot recognize right from wrong, and who cannot take a moral stand against Putin and Russia. War against war can have many avenues and the pocketbook is one of them.

Condemnation of Putin’s action

against Ukraine and its people is an absolute action that we must support.

War has no imagination, it repeats itself in one message over and over again – Death, Destruction, and the grave stupidity of it all.

The world comes to either its beginning or to its end. What Russia and Putin has done is the beginning of their end.

A month-long violence suppression initiative by a Langley RCMP special response team – in the wake of recent shooting incidents – seized $30,000 in cash, $27,500 in illegal drugs, and multiple weapons.

Since the beginning of the year, Langley Township and Langley City recorded five confirmed shooting incidents linked to organized crime and/or the drug trade, said Cpl. Holly Largy, Langley RCMP’s media liaison officer.

Two of the shootings took place in “very

public” locations, including one close to an occupied elementary school, she noted.

Supt. Adrian Marsden, the officer in charge at the Langley RCMP, said “following the string of shootings, immediate action was taken. Langley detachment partnered with Surrey RCMP gang enforcement team and CFSEU (Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit) to increase the pressure on the individuals perpetrating violence in our community.”

The amount of contraband seized suggests “our efforts have been effective,” Marsden said.

“We will endeavour to employ these, and other initiatives moving forward.”

White Rock RCMP sank their teeth into a quintessentially Canadian case March 4 – a shoreline rescue, with officers coming to the aid of a “very tired beaver.”

After receiving a report of a beaver in distress – on World Wildlife Day, no less – two Mounties found the critter on East Beach, where waves were rolling it into the rocks.

The adolescent beaver was captured and transported in the cruiser to Critter Care

Wildlife Society in Langley, where it was being treated for salt-water poisoning after ingesting too much sea water.

According to a representative from Critter Care, the beaver is at risk of having suffered kidney and liver damage from the salt water, and was receiving fluids in the facility’s ICU. The animal is expected to be OK, and will be released back into the wild at a later date.

The beaver, estimated to be about two years old, was likely kicked out of his family group and seeking new territory, according to Critter Care.

Though the beaver will eventually be released back into the wild, the challenge will be in finding it a location that is suitable for beavers, but not currently occupied by them, as beavers are very territorial.

On Oct. 21, a student went to Ramdin’s classroom to make up a missed lab, and when Ramdin walked past the student he said “What’s that smell?”

He then leaned in to smell the student’s neck and said “You smell good.”

The student was very uncomfortable, the consent agreement said.

Ramdin resigned from the school by Nov. 12.

The Commissioner found that Ramdin’s conduct showed a lack of understanding of professional boundaries, and created a negative learning environment.

Ramdin has until the end of March to complete the course.

Langley’s Professional Live Arts for Youth (PLAY) Society will open its doors to the public for the first time ever, since its launch in 2014.

Young people who perform with the non-profit theatre group will stage a musical comedy, Shrek the Musical Jr. – a story of an ogre named Shrek who sets off on a quest to save a princess from a dragon.

However, it turns out that to ultimately succeed, Shrek must battle an even bigger obstacle: learning how to believe in himself and open his heart to others.

“Shrek’s unique story of discovery encourages each of us to examine our prejudices, review what we believe to be our limitations and work to better understand ourselves and others,” said Brad Tones, founder and executive director of PLAY Society.

The iconic character Shrek will take the stage alongside princess Fiona, antagonist Lord Farquaad, Donkey, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and many other fairy tale characters.

The cast is comprised of 18 youth, eight from Langley.

Tones shared that 17 people also are working behind the scenes to bring the play to the stage.

“Shrek the Musical Jr. is an oppor-

tunity for all youth – regardless of their background – to have a chance to perform at a professional stage in front of public,” Tones said.

Langley resident and play director Fiorella Artoni shared that the show reflects inclusivity and encourages people to be proud of their origins.

“I am beyond grateful to have been given the chance to direct this funky

musical,” Artoni said.

“It has been a magical experience bringing my vision to life with the help of my amazing students. We can’t wait to have you waving your freak flag with us in PLAY society’s production of Shrek Jr.” The Langley-based society was started eight years ago, and though the participants have presented multiple times in the past, the shows were not open for the public. Instead, they were limited to friends and family of performers.

Tones explaned his team spent six years training the kids and getting them ready to perform a professional musical show.

“This show is the culmination of the last six years of building our reputation,” he said.

All teenagers are enrolled in different high schools, but spend their weekends and summer holidays learning theatre.

Calla Trudeau, a longtime PLAY student who has the role of Donkey, said that she loves how the story encourages everyone to accept diversity of all kinds.

“You don’t have to hide your true self and you get to express yourself,” said Trudeau, who was recently hired by the society as a teaching assistant.

Langley’s Railee Yeager said that the play is fulfilling her dream. Elise,

who plays Princess Fiona, said that the play has some sad parts, but it is also filled with comedy.

Tones, who is also the show’s producer, founded the society after his idea to provide affordable arts education programs to youth across B.C. was appreciated by Debra Hinksman through a $250,000 fund. Hinksman funded the project through Barbara

Howard Student Arts Fund and offered Tones the money she received after selling her church in New Westminster. The fund was named after one of the last members of the church, Barbara Howard.

The funding applications were opened for people worldwide, but Tones’ answer to “what would you do to change the world for children” won the Hinksman’s heart.

Along with a friend, Tones pitched the idea to allow kids to explore theatre regardless of their financial situation.

Soon after, the PLAY Society was created to offer theatre classes at $5 an hour. There is also a scholarship program to help cover that cost for families in need.

PLAY offers classes all year long, but Tones shared that summer is a “big time” as the society has organized camps and classes.

Shrek, the Musical Jr., is the society’s first “big” professional production.

The society will present Shrek the Musical Jr. Thursday to Saturday, March 17 to 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Chief Sepass Theatre, 9096 Trattle St., in Fort Langley. A Langley non-profit wants to jazz up the local music scene, and share expert knowledge with emerging and professional artists.

After having to postpone and reschedule the jazz education workshop several times due to the pandemic, the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival is finally hosting the workshop at the end of the month.

Led by Vancouver’s A-list of jazz musicians and educators, the workshop is suitable for young, emerging, or professional jazz music enthusiasts, said Karen Zukas, co-founder and

executive director of the festival.

All levels of jazz instrumentalists and vocalists are invited to register.

Workshop faculty includes Jodi Proznick (bass), Bill Coon (guitar), Craig Scott (drums), James Danderfer (woodwinds), Miles Black (piano), Steve Maddock (vocals), and Vince Mai (trumpet).

“The workshop gives musicians of all levels the chance to play with pros and peers to boost their improv skills in a supportive, no-pressure environment,” said Proznick, workshop facilitator and bass instructor.

“It provides them with the opportunity to receive feedback, insights, and knowledge to level up their musicianship while forging relationships with A-list pros and other musicians.”

Workshop attendees will start the day with a faculty performance. That’s followed by master class breakouts by instrument, and end with improvisation ensemble sessions.

First offered in 2018, the workshop runs along with the annual jazz festival, which will start July 21 this year. The workshop was last offered in-person in 2019 and had to move online due to COVID-19.

“We are really excited to be able return to in-person,” Zukas said.

To offer the attendees a chance to interact with the experts directly, the Sunday, March 27 workshop is limited to 50 people.

New banners flying in Fort Langley owe their design to a young Indigenous artist, and a partnership with the Fort Langley Community Association.

Atheana Picha is a Salish artist from the Kwantlen and Tsarlip First Nations.

Her design shows intertwined wolves and salmon, and is based on Coast Salish teachings.

Wolves are seen as strong and caring, working to keep their family units together.

Picha said a story her mentor told her about a boy adopted by the wolf people inspired the design.

“One day he decided to go back to his home village, and he was welcomed back by his village and family with open arms,” Picha said.

“The boy brought teachings from the wolves, hunting skills, and different knowledge of the territory.

This story is meaningful to me because it makes me think of other Indigenous

The theatre department recently started resumption of public performances as the restrictions were lifted, and Woo said that the show is a “great” opportunity for people to come together and celebrate.

Bright Star performances take place on the Langley campus, Tuesdays, Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays from March 15 to April 2.

Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. The Saturday matinees on March 26 and April 2 start at 2 p.m.

There are no performances on Thursdays.

The price of a typical house in Langley soared past $1.7 million in February, even as a flood of new sellers entered a market red hot for more than a year and a half.

The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board’s latest data for February home sales showed a record-breaking number of new listings in the region.

The benchmark price – the average price for a “typical” local house – in Langley rose five per cent in a single month from January to February, hitting $1,723,100, up from $1,641,300.

The median price of a detached home was also more than $1.7 million, while the average price was $1.96 million.

The price of a benchmark townhouse rose to $831,200, a 4.8 per cent increase from $793,000 the month before, and up 35.9 per cent in a year.

Benchmark condo prices reached $580,600, up 8.6 per cent month over month from $534,400 in January, and a 39.7 per cent increase year over year.

While price increases continued an extreme ascent that began back in the summer of 2020 and which has yet to slow down, what did change in Feb-

ruary was that more people put their homes on the market.

Across the wider Fraser Valley region, there were 3,742 homes listed for sale in February, a 75. 3 per cent jump from January’s listings, and a 14.6 per cent increase over February of 2021.

The previous high-water mark for new listings in February was back in 2016, when 3,283 homes were put up for sale.

“Although the market is still far from balanced, it is encouraging to see new listings increase again for the second month in a row,” said FVREB president Larry Anderson. “We’re hopeful that this trend will be sustained leading into the spring season as more sellers come on stream to help soften the market and provide opportunities for the many buyers who’ve been sidelined over the past year and a half.”

In Langley, there were 246 new listings of detached houses in February, a 49.1 per cent increase from the same month in 2021, and a 167.4 per cent increase from this past January.

New listings for townhouses hit 163, 14.7 per cent lower than the same month last year, but still 52.3 per cent higher than in January of this year.

The sea change in homes up for sale came in the month leading up to the Wednesday, March 2 announcement by the Bank of Canada that it would raise interest rates for the first time in years, going up to 0.5 per cent from 0.25 per cent.

A rise in the Bank of Canada rate drives up all rates for new mortgages, but local mortgage broker Spencer Ennis doesn’t think it’ll have an immediate impact on the way people buy their homes.

“Everybody speaks about rates of course, everybody’s hypersensitive to them,” said Ennis.

Langley-based First West Credit Union is lending a helping hand to Ukrainian relief efforts.

FWCU and its local divisions Envision Financial, Valley First, Island Savings, and Enderby & District Financial, made a $25,000 donation to the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal.

According to CEO Launi Skinner, the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal will address immediate and ongoing relief efforts, long-term recovery, resiliency, and other critical humanitarian activities as needs arise, both in Ukraine and surrounding counSkinner tries, including those who are displaced.

A Langley mother is worried about the impact a local bookstore will have on children by stocking vibrators on its shelves.

“First I walked by, and it didn’t strike me,” said Melissa McEvoy, about a visit to the Langley Indigo bookstore outlet on the Family Day weekend.

Then she realized the shelf had brightly-coloured vibrators and what she called “graphic books” on display near the candles and pajamas, close to the store’s selfhelp section.

McEvoy said that sort of merchandise is wonderful for consenting adults, but “not for curious children.”

“I called management, and they said essentially, ‘I’m sorry you feel that way’,” said McEvoy.

She called Indigo’s corporate office, which also

“We offer products that support the information

and resources our customers are interested in to help them live their life on purpose and continue on their holistic wellness journey through: sleep, beauty, fitness, mindfulness, cooking, etc. in addition to sexual wellness.”

Over time, there has been an increase in customer interest in books on sexual wellness, and the company’s “thought leadership” decided there was a need for more accessible sexual wellness merchandise.

“Initially customers were tentative, but when we coupled products with books that provide information and resources, we have seen demand significantly increase in this space,” Indigo’s statement said.

It said the company was trying to reduce stigma and allow customers to be comfortable with sexual wellness and pleasure as a part of overall wellness.

Tia Dawson didn’t think she was being abused because her husband didn’t hit her.

At the time, she was living in Aldergrove and working as a school principal.

“I came from an abusive home as a child,” Dawson recalled. “My dad was physically abusive. I thought that’s what abuse was.”

Dawson told her story publicly for the first time on March 8, at a Langley event to mark International Women’s Day. It was hosted by Langley’s Ishtar Women’s Resource Society, which operates local shelters for abused women.

After years of emotional and financial abuse, Dawson was advised by a lawyer to take her three children and go to a transition house.

Dawson didn’t know what that was, so she looked it up online.

“I have two degrees and I found myself at Ishtar,” Dawson recounted.

“That’s when I found out about different forms of abuse. It doesn’t just happen to homeless people, to people of low-economic status. It happens to everyone.”

Langley City Mayor Val van Broek shared her personal experience, too.

“I did grow up in an alcoholic family and suffered some trauma when I was a child, and it unfortunately led me on a path of abusive relationships as well,” van den Broek said.

“Thankfully, I found a great man, my husband Rob, [who] made me see what love really is.”

A safety notice has been issued about Michael James Fader and Fader Industries, a Langley-based installer of furnaces, cooling systems, and water heaters.

Technical Safety BC is advising homeowners, businesses, building and strata managers – particularly in the Lower Mainland, on Vancouver Island, and in the Okanagan – to consult their records to see if they have had gas or electrical work performed by Fader or Fader Industries.

And, if so, they’re asked to contact Technical Safety BC if they have any safety concerns.

“It is also possible that Mr. Fader has performed work in other areas in B.C.,” the notice said.

“While Mr. Fader is not currently authorized to perform regulated gas or electrical work in B.C. and does not hold a licence to do regulated work in either of these areas, he has conducted installations and repairs without a permit,” the notice said.

“Significant hazards have resulted from some of Mr. Fader’s work and those risks may have posed serious and sometimes severe safety risks to the public,” it noted.

Anyone with any information regarding work carried out by Fader or Fader Industries is asked to contact Technical Safety B.C. (formerly BC Safety Authority) at 1-866-566-7233.

Langley Advance Times reached out to Fader Industries, asking if the business had any comment to make about the advisory.

“Yes we have, and not true,” was the emailed response. A Fader Facebook page said the company serves Langley, Victoria, and Penticton.

“It’s not enough,” Akulia said.

“We need more.”

Like Dawson, Akulia experienced emotional abuse.

“Women have to heal, and it takes a long time,” Akulia said. “It took me decades.

“If you don’t break inter-generational abuse, it will affect you, and your children, and their children,” Akulia warned.

Ishtar director of operations Mardell Donnelly said, at the shelter she sees “women who are coming back into their own, to be treated the way they deserve to be treated.”

It is quite personal, she explained.

“Langley is one of the only communities that does not have second-stage housing,” Berlin explained, even though it was the first to establish a transition house 49 years ago.

“Somehow in the evolution [of support services], we’ve been left out,” Berlin observed.

The first step for women fleeing abuse is a transition house, where they have 30 to 40 days to stay, while second-stage housing provides them with more time, Berlin explained.

Ishtar Women’s Resource Society is the oldest transition house in B.C. and has been providing a safe space in the Central Fraser Valley since 1973 for women facing abuse.

The 19th annual event was attended by almost 200 people in Abbotsford, while another 16 attended virtually.

The event was held on a smaller scale this year to be cautious, but Manpreet Grewal, the director of Multicultural and Immigrant Integration Services at Archway Community Services said next year they hope to “see the full force of physical energy and human interaction.”

Take tea and talk plans The Langley seniors centre is offering older residents a chance to talk about the future of the community, specifically for seniors and people with dementia.

Langley Seniors Resource Society’s (LSRS) executive director Anthony Kupferschmidt hosts monthly teas so centre members and other local seniors can sit down and chat about issues of importance to them.

For the Tuesday, March 22 tea, he’s inviting seniors to talk about the Township’s age-friendly and dementia-friently strategies.

The Township has done an update of the plans.

“I think this new action plan lays the foundation for how older adult residents of the Township can stay active and connected in the community for years to come,” he said.

“I feel that LSRS can play an integral role in supporting the Township to achieve many of these priority actions because they are in line with the work we do through both our Adult Day Program and recreation and resource centre locations.

The plan calls for the community to: • Continue to offer a wide range of recreation programs that promote health and wellness, including programs targeted at older adults.

• Convene residents, in-

cluding older adults and people with disabilities, local businesses, and TransLink to share information and identify opportunities to improve transit services, including HandyDART. Kupferschmidt’s tea is 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22.

ket weaving (not so well), and woodworking (a skill she knew nothing about and had to learn fast).

George and Betty set off on a trip across Canada, just the two of them. They wanted to attend a military reunion in Victoria, and they lived in Montreal. So George spruced up a VW van and off they went.

Betty would cherish the fantastic memories from that trip which was only a few months before she lost him.

In 1978 George had a fatal heart attack. At the age of 56, she was a widow.

She decided it was the right time to continue her post-secondary studies in divinity and obtained her masters degree from McGill. Betty

took another year of schooling and was ordained a Presbyterian minister.

“I wanted to go into active ministry,” she said.

She would end up being something of a troubleshooter in the church, sent to communities to get churches back on track.

Her first church was in Armstrong, then it was off to Kerrisdale before heading north to Prince George.

She settled in Langley back in the 1990s and was assigned the church at Bradner which, under her guidance, went from having a congregation of about five to more than 70. At 89, Betty

McLagen retired.

Although Betty had formally retired, she still performed the occasional celebration of life, funeral or wedding, including at her grandniece’s nuptials.

She’s been able to travel the world for work and pleasure, and do missions work in varied settings, yet she endured surprisingly little sexism though she was a minister during an era when it was uncommon for women. There was only one person who did not accept her as an ordained leader.

Betty spent almost 30 years living in Murrayville, just down the street from Avalon Gardens, where she moved to in early December 2021.

Betty admits that she does miss going to church since the COVID-19 pandemic but was able to partic-

ipate via technology.

She awaits society to be back open.

“One day we’ll be back, but I don’t think it’s here yet,” she said.

She has been able to maintain other key activities she enjoys, namely daily walking.

When the weather allows, she goes walking for 30 to 60 minutes around the neighbourhood.

All those years ago in Scotland, little Betty, plagued by whooping cough, didn’t seem like the kind to have such a long and healthy life.

“Up until I was seven, I was a sick child,” she explained.

But she’s spent a life in moderation, not over-indulging, staying active and staying involved, and it has paid off. She’s on no medications.

“I have neither ache nor pain in any part of my body,” she said.

In the 2A competition, eighth-ranked Langley Christian was upset by ninth-ranked West Point Grey Academy Wolves 66-51 in their opening game. Each team recorded two wins and two losses.

In the 4A championship final, Burnaby Rebels defeated Semiahmoo Thunderbirds 72-57. In the 2A final, Westsyde Whundas Kamloops school defeated Victoria’s Lambrick Park Lions 73-71.

The battle for the Langley Cup at the Sportsplex saw 25 teams and 400 players in the race.

A long-standing tradition within the Langley Minor Hockey Association (LMHA), the event pits C Division teams from U11 to U18 in a double knock-out tournament.

Todd Mclaren, VP human resources and risk management at Langley Minor Hockey, said the LMHA was “ecstatic to be back at the rink with reduced restrictions. It’s nice to see everyone’s smiling face enjoying the sport they love.”

Mclaren said the association hopes to make the 2022/2023 year “even more successful.”

For International Women’s Day on March 8, Langley United Soccer Association (LUSA) hosted a BC Soccer provincial program match day featuring some of the province’s most talented female soccer players, including five former and current members of the Langley league.

“It was very special for us,” said LUSA executive director Marcel Horn.

Black-versus-red match night was an opportunity for the players to showcase them-

selves for a spot on the Canada Games team, and they made the most of it, cheered on by an enthusiastic audience.

“The energy, the hooting, the hollering, it elevated the level of play,” Horn commented.

“Langley is a soccer city.”

Current Langley United players Olyvia Hleucka, Gaia Rees, and Beth Brown were joined by Langley United grassroots players and current LUSA staff coaches Amanda Clauzel and Jayden Hannesson.

As well, Langley United coach Chelsey Hannesson, who is in the female provincial program, worked with all the players on the field that evening.

Final score was Team Black 5, Team Red 2.

The game was also a long-delayed inauguration of the new LUSA field at Walnut Grove.

Weekends in March at the LQMA track, which is located in the 26900-block of 8th Avenue, will be devoted to practice sessions. Racing begins Saturday, April 2, with a competition for the youngest racers.

“We get to drop some green flags for our novices,” Strobel said.

Bodhi Hawkins plans to be among the competitors, looking to honour his uncle’s memory with a win.

Weekend of victory Giants post two wins during U.S. roadtrip They won two out of three games south of the border last week, and are now preparing for rematches on home ice.

It was the Vancouver Giants’ turn to play host to their Washington rivals at Langley Events Centre this week, after scooping two wins this past weekend.

On Friday night, in Kennewick, Wash., the G-Men secured a 3-2 victory over the Tri-City Americans.

That triumph was followed by a 6-5 defeat over the Portland Winterhawks Saturday night at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Recently appointed captain, #10 Zack Ostapchuk led by example, with a goal and an assist Ostapchuk during the Saturday game.

The left-handed forward leads all Giants with four short-handed goals. He currently sits tied for second in the WHL. The G-Men were set to faceoff against the Tri-City Americans again on Wednesday night (after press deadline) on home ice at Langley Events Centre.

They play again Friday, taking on the Everett Silvertips at LEC. Then, they travel south to Washington on Saturday for a rematch.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Charles Linke on March 2, 2022. John was born in Vernon, BC on February 16, 1940 but became a Langley resident at the age of 4. He married Donna Honeyman in 1965. Two daughters of whom he was immensely proud, Tara and Lael, completed their family. John loved his home that he designed and built himself on their Langley acreage and his cabin at Shuswap. He was a steel fabricator, a hot air balloon pilot, a builder, a mechanic and a tinkerer! He was a founding member of the Langley Loafers as well as the Township 7 firehall. John loved people and was never happier then when he had a rye and coke and someone to talk to. He was very happy to welcome his sons-in-law to the family and his grandchildren were always a source of entertainment and joy. They have fond memories of tractor rides and burn piles with Grandpa. He leaves behind his wife Donna, daughters Tara and Lael, sons-in-law Simon and Graham, his beloved grandchildren Elise, Claire, Liam and Link, his brother Chris, his cousin Karen and many friends that were like family. Two four legged friends, Kazzie and Smokey, are missing him as well. The world is a little less bright today for everyone who knew and loved him. No flowers please but if you’d like to make a donation to Alzheimer’s or a charity of your choice it would be appreciated. A celebration of life will be held in April. The family would like to thank his many friends that showed up or called to make these last couple of years easier for John.

PAUL F. ENGLAND Paul (42) passed away January 17, 2022 and will be greatly missed by his parents Heather England (nee Kalls), Frank England (wife Rebecca), his brother Chris (wife Karine) and many friends.

Paul was a hard-working and reliable trucker for over a decade, driving long-haul throughout BC. He loved travel; visiting Mexico many times with friends or family, touring Costa Rica and lastly exploring the Dominican Republic with family in January 2020.

Paul enjoyed the outdoors, often camping with his brother Chris or hiking with friends/family.

He also loved music and was a talented musician/ electronic composer. Generous, kind and a free spirit.

MCLAREN, Lisa Marie (née Kenyon) It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lisa Marie McLaren in the early hours of February 4th, 2022, at the age of 57.

Lisa was predeceased by her son Tyler (2008), her mother Helen Bath (2017), her father Rick Kenyon (2018) and her Stepdad Bert Bath (2007).

Lisa is survived by her husband of 36 years, Everett, her son Devan and his partner Hilary, brother Rod Kenyon and his wife Shelly, stepmom Julie, stepbrothers & sisters and many nieces & nephews.

Lisa was born in New Westminster on October 22nd, 1964 and was raised in Coquitlam before moving to White Rock at the age of 15 where she attended Earl Marriott Secondary School, graduating in 1982. In the same year, at the age of 17, Lisa was crowned First Princess in the Miss White Rock Pageant. Soon after, she met Everett and they married in June of 1985. They went on to live for brief periods in Calgary and White Rock before settling in the Walnut Grove area of North Langley.

As a parent, Lisa was active in her boys’ schools and sports and was a Founder and First Treasurer/Secretary for the North Langley Basketball Association. She spent almost 15 years coaching Curling and Bocce with Langley Special Olympics where she was awarded the Coach of the Year for her efforts. Lisa was also awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for her past contributions to the Rotary Club of White Rock.

After the passing of Tyler in 2008, Lisa returned to school and graduated from Kwantlen Polytechnic University at the top of her class with a Certificate as a Special Education Teaching Assistant. Lisa enjoyed a rewarding career with the Langley School District, most of which was at Richard Bulpitt Elementary, where she was highly respected and loved by her co-workers (who referred to her as their “Work Mom”) and by her students.

Lisa loved to camp with family and friends. Some of her favourite times were spent around the campfire. She enjoyed travelling on many vacations to various countries including a bucket list trip Moorea & Bora Bora (French Polynesia) last October before her health began to fail.

Lisa’s strength and positivity throughout her 2 ½ year-long battle with Metastatic Colon Cancer was an inspiration to many. She never gave up hope - even in her final hours. The family would like to express our extreme gratitude to Dr. David Richardson, the nurses & doctors in the Cancer Clinic and Palliative Care Ward at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and the loving staff at Laurel Place Hospice who made her final weeks comfortable. Special thanks to Sandra Stratychuk, Lisa’s friend for over 45 years for the loving care she gave Lisa.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 22nd, 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Langley School District Foundation are greatly appreciated.
