Surrey firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire at a small strip mall in Newton shortly after midnight Monday (Feb. 21). Twenty firefighters were called to the 12800-block of 85 Avenue to find smoke coming from a video and wireless store. “When we got there one person
was inside but was removed and did not suffer any injuries,” Assistant Fire Chief Ben Dirksen said. “Sprinklers controlled the spread of the fire. So there was just lots of smoke. No indication that it’s suspicious.” (Photo: Shane MacKichan)
Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum’s next court appearance on his public mischief charge is set for March 8, after a two-minute hearing in Surrey provincial court on Tuesday morning. “We’ve had some discussions, disclosure is ongoing, a bulk of the disclosure has been made,” Special Crown prosecutor Richard Fowler told the judge.
