A WONDERHEADS Christmas Carol features 20 masks and puppets, including a 10-foot-tall Ghost of Christmas Present, all designed by company co-founding artistic directors Kate Braidwood and Andrew Phoenix.

Braidwood embraces the “live-action Pixar”comparison often used to describe the company’s work: “It’s a real compliment because, like Pixar, we strive to create enchanting shows that hit home with all ages.”

A Victorian Christmas

Beloved on-man show runs at Craigdarroch Castle avour the spirit of a Victorian Christmas with a visit to Craigdarroch Castle during December.

“The holiday season is always a special time at the castle,” says John Hughes, Craigdarroch Castle’s executive director. “We continue to look forward to welcoming guests for tours throughout December, as well the return of one of our favourite holiday traditions, the one-man version of A Christmas Carol, performed by actor Jason Stevens.”

Charles Dickens himself toured Europe and North America delivering staged readings of his famed tale, and now actor Jason Stevens channels the Dickensian spirit within the historic walls of Craigdarroch Castle and brings the world of Victorian England to life with his perennially sold-out performances.

Show times for A Christmas Carol are December 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23 and 24, starting a 6 pm and 8 pm. The performance is recommended for ages 13 and up. Tickets

Celebrate the season with a family tradition Our Place and CBC present Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol t’s time to roast some chestnuts and gather ‘round the flickering iPad, PC or phone to celebrate Christmas with Tiny Tim, Scrooge and the ever-patient Bob Cratchit.

And while we can’t yet meet in person, CBC personalities and Our Place staff are offering up the next best thing: a virtual dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

This year’s edition of A Christmas Carol takes place on Friday, December 10, at 6 pm via a special virtual broadcast featuring well-known CBC personalities reading excerpts from the timeless story.

Returning readers Gregor Craigie (host of On The Island), Shelagh Rogers (The Next Chapter) and Robyn Burns (All Points West), will be joined by Rohit Joseph and Kathryn Marlow (All Points West) and special guest Grant McKenzie (Our Place).

Dickens as Dickens did it!

Blue Bridge Theatre features Sanjay Talwar in one-person show hile Charles Dickens is admired as one of the great novelists of the 19th century, what is less wellknown is that he also enjoyed a successful career as an actor who offered enormously popular performances of his novels.

The first of these performances was of his most famous work A Christmas Carol—which took place in Manchester, England in 1853.

While other novelists had read their works in public prior to this, Dickens (because of his great acting talents) took this idea to a whole new level. Indeed, it could be argued that, as well as being the most popular novelist of his and later centuries, he invented the idea of the one-person show.

Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre pays homage to his legacy with its one man version of A Christmas Carol running from December 7-19 at the Roxy Theatre in Victoria. Blue Bridge is pleased to welcome back the veteran Stratford and Shaw Festival performer Sanjay Talwar.

“We are so pleased to be bringing this wonderful performance back this year for a live audi-

ence,” said Blue Bridge’s artistic director Brian Richmond. “Last year’s live-streamed audiences were entranced by Mr Talwar’s virtuosic performance—he vividly brought to life all of those well-known and beloved characters, including Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig and, of course, Tiny Tim. Director Jacob Richmond states, “It’s pure classic storytelling. We are transported to Dickensian England through the power of words—audiences will experience this tale today in a very similar manner as audiences in the 19th century did.”

Director Richmond is joined by a creative team that brought Blue Bridge audiences such hits as Billy Bishop Goes To War and The 39 Steps with Hans Saefkow on sets, Pauline Stynes on costumes, Rebekah Johnson on lights and Alex Wlasenko on sound.

LOST show focuses on diversity, discrimination, intolerance Frankenstein: The Radio Play starts December 9 awyers on Stage Theatre (LOST) presents Frankenstein: The Radio Play, a performance about diversity and the consequences of intolerance to “life.”

It runs at Langham Court Theatre, December 9-12.

Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, over 200 years ago. However, her messages about diversity and the consequences of discrimination and intolerance, not to mention inequalities between the sexes, still resonate strongly today, particularly in the legal and theatre communities.

Her critiques were not surprising. Her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, was a renowned women’s rights activist who authored A Vindication of the Rights of Women in 1792. Her father, William Godwin, was a radical political philosopher, who wrote An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice.

In Frankenstein: The Radio Play, by Philip Grecian, audiences will not only have the chance to enjoy one heck of a story, but also discover or rediscover the meaningful messages Shelley wove into Frankenstein.

radio broadcast, complete with the required sound effects.

Imagine thunder, doors opening and closing, the gallows, ice crushing ships and perhaps a scream or two.

The play will be directed

by Andrew Pirie and Sara Ramshaw. All the actors on stage and crew backstage hail from the legal community, including Kimberly Henders Miller, James Legh, Albert Berns, Selina Wall, Alex Fyfe, Sara Ramshaw, Glenn Grande, Gillian Calder, Ruari McLennan, Karrie Wolf and Benjamin Peterson, all making big pro bono commitments of their time to help others. Four special guest singers will also join the cast.

Proceeds raised will go to support those in need in our community, through the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre and Need2 Suicide Prevention, Education & Support.

Holiday magic Ballet Victoria presents The Nutcracker in all its glory he Nutcracker brings a great family tradition to the 21st century with everything you expect from a Ballet Victoria performance.

Each season this original Christmas tale danced to the timeless score of The Nutcracker, played by the Victoria Symphony, showcases beautifully executed dance, brilliant costumes, complex choreography, humour and, as always, several surprises. The music soars throughout the theatre as the dancers fly through the air and bring to life a story which combines The Nutcracker magic with a unique and fresh twist.

The Nutcracker will play two family friendly shows at the ACT Art Centre on December 7 at 7 pm and December 8 at 2 pm As the story goes, Clara’s family is welcoming guests to its traditional and unique Christmas Eve party. Family and friends are in attendance to enjoy the festivities, to dance and decorate the Christmas tree with special ornaments brought by the world travelling Uncle Dross. This year, along with a few surprises, he’s brought a box from his exotic travels, a box that is not to be opened…

As the evening draws to an end and everyone retires for the night, little Clara sneaks back into the living room to take a closer look at the mysterious red box.

Ignoring her uncle’s warning, she opens it and releases myriad fantastical characters that create chaos around

the house. Clara is terrified and when her uncle joins her, even his magic seems powerless. Frantic, he summons the Nutcracker for help and he, in turn, asks the Snow Princess out of the box to help cool the situation.

The Snow Princess tells Clara how she can help bring peace back into her home. She must conquer her fear of the unknown and dance with all the fabulous characters. She must then thank them each with a rose so that they willingly go back into the box.

When all have returned to the box, the Dewdrop Fairy and her Cavalier offer a dance celebration with the roses, followed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince grand pas de deux.

Clara closes the box, Christmas night is quiet again and all dream about presents and the wonderful times shared with family and friends.

Daniel Lapp’s 18th annual concert set to please holiday audiences he Victoria Conservatory of Music (VCM) is presenting a treasured tradition again this year—The 18th annual Daniel Lapp’s Home for Christmas concert.

This cross-country celebration premieres online via the VCM’s Youtube Channel on Wednesday, December 22 at 7 pm PST. It is time once again to spread holiday cheer, and Daniel Lapp’s concerts offer a wonderful and much-needed renewal of Christmas music magic.

Novel life begins at 80 for Victoria author Mary Spilsbury Ross pens No Intermission

i ctoria author Mary Spilsbury Ross is proving age is just a number having recently celebrated the release of her debut novel, No Intermission, at aged 80.

Spilsbury Ross, who danced her way around Europe and the Middle East in her 20s and still does a daily barre more than 50 years later, wrote a bestselling cookbook, Frugal Feasts, in 1996.

But there were no plans to pen a novel until her daughter, in the Vancouver film industry, voiced a need for quality screenplays and persuaded her mom to get writing again.

A 2017 screenwriting course at Camosun College got Spilsbury Ross’s creative juices flowing—and moulding a screenplay synopsis based on her career as that travelling dancer in the ’60s, she realized writing the book first was optimal.

“I’ve always loved writing and have danced since age five—it’s been a lifelong passion,” says Spilsbury Ross, also greatly inspired by the iconic Liza Minelli movie Cabaret. “So blending the two for No Intermission has been fun.

“The screenwriting course really helped me write the book with a movie in mind. I’d say to myself ‘write as though you’re the camera and describe what you’re seeing, adding dialogue and creating compelling action.’”

No Intermission’s protagonist, Maggie, is a dancer from Vancouver Island’s North Oyster—where Spilsbury Ross’s family own a summer cottage—and the novel spans two years of her life dancing in Europe, from age 19 to 21.

Denyse Thomasos: Odyssey AGGV to host only stop in Western Canada of famed Trinidadian-Canadian artist he Art Gallery of Greater Victoria presents the ground-breaking and much anticipated exhibition Denyse Thomasos: Odyssey, running now until February 20, 2022. ”We are grateful that our community will have the opportunity to experience the powerful work of Denyse Thomasos.

Work that has the capacity to provoke in us questions, curiosity and a range of emotions that connect deeply with the human condition,” said Nicole Stanbridge, AGGV curator of engagement.“This is articulated so poignantly

by Esi Edugyan, the Victoria-based, award-winning novelist, who contributed a moving and insightful essay to the exhibition’s catalogue, referencing how Thomasos’ work lives in a place of tension between things, like freedom and confinement. Edugyan states, ‘the work is subtle and refuses to show us what we expect to see.’”

The exhibition is co-curated by Gaëtane Verna, director of The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto, and Sarah Milroy, chief curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. The show brings together more than 50 works from every phase of Denyse Thomasos’ (1964–2012) career, celebrating her historic contribution to Canadian art.

Canadian artist whose epic paintings incorporate imagery from a range of sources, including Caribbean textiles, historic slave ships, industrial shipyards, graveyards, villages and maximum security prisons.

Thomasos explained her choice of subject matter in an artist statement in 2012, shortly before her untimely death: “I was struck by the premeditated, efficient, dispassionate records of human beings as cargo and also by the deplorable conditions of the slave ships—so many Africans stacked and piled into the tiny, airless holds.

“In my artwork, I used lines in deep space to recreate these claustrophobic conditions, leaving no room to breathe.

To capture the feeling of confinement, I created three large-scale, black-andwhite paintings of the structures that were used to contain slaves—and left such catastrophic effects on the black psyche: the slave ship, the prison and the burial site. These became archetypal for me. I began to reconstruct and recycle their forms in all of my works.”

The structures that confine and define us—whether political, social or

architectural—served as the subject of her works. With her lush painterly approach, Thomasos compounded these subjects into form and colour. The result is a body of work that recalls the history of the African diaspora with boundless energy and force. Thomasos’ art enacts a delicate balance between representation and abstraction, and holds a unique place in the history of Canadian art, adding to a narrative from which Black, Indigenous and people of colour’s voic-

es have for too long been excluded. The McMichael’s exhibition gathers works from all phases of Thomasos’ career in celebration of her historic contribution.

Denyse Thomasos: Odyssey is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue including a curatorial conversation between Verna and Milroy, as well as the essay by Edugyan. The catalogue is available at the AGGV Gallery Shop.

There’s power in this salad

ith its warm wood, brick and stone decor and comfortable furnishings, the Yates Street Taphouse is a place to relax and spend a few hours with friends over drinks or perhaps a few rounds of pool.

Before COVID-19, the large bar was often surrounded by folks standing and enjoying a laugh and a cheer for their favourite teams on silent TVs, or sitting at the many tables and booths. Every seat has a TV view. Prefer a street view?

The flexile façade opens up, providing high-top seating that can be tucked safely indoors on inclement days or opened to the fine weather and pedestrians passing by.

And, of course, there’s the COVID-19 patio that Dr. Bonnie has confirmed for at least another year. The Yates has long been a favourite after-movie spot, being conveniently located across the street from the down-

town Odeon Theatre and a short walk from the Capital Theatres.

And so I found myself there, ready for a little dinner after a late matinée. I chose the Salmon Power Bowl ($19.)

Power Bowls have become a staple on menus throughout the city in recent years.

Victorians understand what they are all about, and know what to expect—but, this isn’t that. Power bowls promise well-balanced, healthful, satisfying all-in-one meals that incorporate all the food groups fairly proportionally to our dietary needs. Invariably, they begin with a base of whole grain.

Quinoa and rice are popular, but almost any grain will do: the range of options is wide. To this base may be added some kind of legume, lentil or pea: again, the options are many. Grain and legume serve as the founda-

tion for these bowls, providing the physical sense of fulfillment in addition to fibre and a range of nutrients and vegetable proteins. On the palate, they provide a nutty, earthy flavour base upon which to build the top notes.

Top notes can be almost anything “healthful,” and all the ingredients on my plate are perfectly acceptable—but this is a salad.

The foundation is spinach, not grain. Halved cherry tomatoes are sprinkled about along with walnut pieces and goat cheese. About a quarter of an avocado is sliced and splayed on one side, next to a decent sized piece of grilled salmon perfectly seasoned (but slightly overcooked—I prefer my salmon to be still translucent inside).

The quality of the vegetables

is superb: the spinach fresh and firm, the tomatoes firm and juicy, and the avocado perfectly ripe. Quantity, too, is excellent, for I depart sated, but not overstuffed.

Even aesthetically, it is a salad. Power bowls do not look like salads. Toppings tend to be sliced, diced, slivered or coiled, and then artfully arranged in appealing patterns that emphasize colour and texture: they often resemble delightful works of modern art.

Exceptional power bowls contrast and complement flavours as well as colour, balancing savoury against sweet, set off by salt, umami, spices and herbs.

Art for the eye and for the palate. But this is a salad. A hearty, flavourful, fulfilling salad.

PERFECTLY POTABLE WINE NOTES by Robert Moyes ’ve been a fan of Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel for years and the 2019 is a California beauty. This is classic Zin: luscious and palate draping, with oodles of dark fruits like plum and cassis and blackberry, some brambly wildness and hints of spice and mocha.

The long finish is almost sweet and undeniably succulent. If you love Pinot Noir, look elsewhere; but if big and bold does it for you, this is one of the best $22 reds on the market.

good-value Pinot Grigio from Peller Family Vineyards. A bit off-dry and quite round in the mouth, the wine blends notes of apple, pear, melon and citrus into a crisp, bright and refreshing crowd pleaser.

A silver medalist in a festival for low-priced wines (who knew there was a “plonk Olympics”?), this tasty sipper pairs well with everything from chicken to creamy seafood pastas. A steal at $10.35.

Chile produces a lot of impressive wines, and a reliable performer is the Santa Carolina Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon. Yummy red fruits and cedar aromatics begin the seduction, followed by a sweet kiss on the palate, as flavours of plum, cherry, cassis and licorice roll onwards and conclude with hints of chocolate and a long, flavourrich finish. Medium bodied, smooth and well balanced, this $16 charmer is a pleasure to drink now, and even has a bit of cellaring potential.

California hogs the limelight when it comes to American wine, but Washington State makes a lot of wines every bit as good. Which brings us to Chateau Ste. Michelle, the state’s oldest winery. Its 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe and round and silky smooth, with a core of luscious dark fruits such as blackberry, cassis, cherry and plum.

Hints of oak and spice carry forward into a long, luxuriant finish. If you are looking for a tasty splurge this would be $28.75 very well spent. (All prices include tax.)

What’s hot right now? Spirits. There has for a long time been a passion and love for wine and there still is; however, people are starting to take spirits way more seriously than ever before. Having a wide variety is one of the keys to a successful bar.

What are the traits of a good bartender? Telling the story behind the drink.

If it’s a classic cocktail, people love hearing about the origins. If it’s an impromptu, people love hearing why you chose to build their drink that specific way.

What is your signature drink? I would have to say one of my current cocktails on the Q Bar menu is the Royal Daiquiri. The fall flavours of maple syrup, Brulé banana, Angostura, Plantation pineapple rum, lime juice and medjool date powder blend very well together.

What are you drinking these days?

While my Portuguese might not be fluent, the owner didn’t mind and helped translate while I worked behind that beautiful bar, which is home to over 90 gins from around the world.
